Putting car dealers in front of car buyers NATIONALLY
The used car market grew by 4.3% between July and September, marking the seventh successive quarter of year on year growth, according to the latest figures published today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).1 Some 1,965,811 vehicles changed hands, with 81,651 additional transactions compared with the same period in 2023,2 following growth in the new car market.
In further good news, a record 53,423 used battery electric vehicles (BEVs) found new owners, a jump of 57.0%, reflecting the largest-ever market share at 2.7%, up from 1.8% in the same period last year. Sales of plug-in hybrids and hybrids also rose, up 29.0% and 35.8% respectively. Meanwhile, 1,123,387 petrol (up 5.7%) and 679,797 diesel vehicles (down -3.9%) found new owners, together accounting for 91.7% of the market.
Black remained the best-selling used car colour, accounting for 21.2% of all transactions. Unchanged from the same period last year, grey took second place, growing by 7.9% to 17.6% of sales, followed by blue, up by 2.8% and making up 16.1% of the market. Silver was the only colour in the top 10 to see volumes fall, slipping to fifth place.
From January to September, transactions have risen in every month and with just one quarter to go until the year end, the used car market is up 6.0% on the same period in 2023, with almost six million (5,897,129) units sold in the first nine months.
Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said,
“Growth in the used car sector is good news and driven by an outstanding range of desirable and, increasingly, zero emission vehicles to suit every budget. Maintaining this depends on a healthy new car market, particularly for EVs. Giving consumers the confidence to switch from their familiar petrol or diesel vehicles requires confidence and incentives otherwise many would-be new car buyers will sit on their hands, leading to a diminishing market that will inevitably limit used car availability and affordability. This will be to the cost of motorists, the economy and the environment – making a review of support for the transition and the regulation intended to deliver it, an urgent priority.”

South Wales Police re-launches free drinks scheme for designated drivers
Apopular scheme allowing designated drivers to receive free draught soft drinks has been relaunched in South Wales.
The initiative, which will run over the Christmas period and until the start of January, has already seen more than 80 premises sign up.
A designated driver is someone who abstains from drinking alcohol to act as the responsible driver. The aim of the scheme is to promote responsible drinking with road safety in mind.
Customers who make themselves known to bar staff as the designated driver – or as ‘DES’ – are then given a wristband, enabling them to receive free draught soft drinks or squash.
We know it can sometimes be a burden being the designated driver but we hope this scheme will encourage more people to be aware of the very serious consequences of drink driving and the importance of being safe on the roads.
There is no way to know how much you can drink and stay under the limit, since it can depend on your weight, age, metabolism, the amount of food you’ve eaten and other factors.
If you’ve been out drinking, you may still be affected by alcohol the next day and could lose your licence if you drive and are still over the legal limit.
The biggest risk you take when driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is the risk of causing a collision Driving under the influence of drink or drugs is extremely dangerous and can affect your driving in numerous ways.
Alcohol and drugs can also create a false confidence which can lead to an increase in risk-taking behaviour, which puts your life and the lives of others in danger.

Toyota announces The new 2025 Yaris
The Toyota Yaris line-up includes an enhanced GR Sport grade and stylish new options for its 2025 model year while maintaining a commitment to class-leading efficiency and safety in the highly competitive B-segment for small hatchbacks.
An agile compact car ideally suited to modern urban life, with proven quality, exceptional efficiency and fun-to-drive dynamics, the multiple award-winning Yaris is consistently one of Toyota’s best-selling models in Europe.
The Yaris family has accumulated more than 10 million global sales, including more than five million in Europe, since its launch in 1999.
Yaris has been a benchmark for innovation since its debut, while staying true to a “big-small” philosophy which combines a compact and purposeful exterior with spacious interior. From raising the bar on safety to pioneering full hybrid power in the B-segment and becoming the first compact car built on the modular Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) GA-B platform, Yaris has continually set new standards.

The 2025 Yaris line-up includes a new Forest Green colour, again available as a monotone finish or striking bi-tone combination with a contrasting black roof. The Yaris 2025 range continues to employ a “dual hybrid” approach to meet customers’ varying needs with 114bhp and 129bhp versions of the 1.5-litre system.
