Welcome

Putting car dealers in front of car buyers NATIONALLY

The UK’s new light commercial vehicle (LCV) market returned to growth in August, rising 1.7% to record the best performance for the month since 2021 after two months of decline. According to the latest figures published today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), 16,575 vans, 4x4s, pickups and taxis joined the road in what is traditionally a low volume month ahead of September’s plate change.

The market for smaller-sized vans, weighing up to and including 2.0 tonnes, continued to increase, up 24.5% to 427 units as new models drove demand. Registrations of medium-sized vans, weighing greater than 2.0 to 2.5 tonnes, grew by 1.9% to 2,771 units, while those of the largest vans, weighing greater than 2.5 to 3.5 tonnes, increased by 1.8% to 11,753 units, remaining the most popular segment with a 70.9% market share. Deliveries of 4x4s and pickups, meanwhile, declined by -12.9% and -2.5% respectively to make up a combined 1,624 units.

Despite the overall market growth, battery electric van (BEV) registrations fell for a third successive month this year and fifth time overall, with 908 registered, down -30.3% year on year. BEVs accounted for just 5.5% of all new vans in August, a fall from 7.9% in August 2023. Over the year-todate, volumes have fallen by -9.5% and market share has declined to 5.1% – essentially half the 10% zero emission vehicle mandate target, despite increasing numbers of manufacturers introducing allnew zero emission vehicles to expand operator choice.

Year-to-date, the van market is up 2.7% to 218,884 units, with all segments recording growth.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said,

A return to growth for Britain’s new van sector is encouraging as the market continues its postCovid recovery. Manufacturers continue to produce a range of new models, with many of these zero emission. However, such a significant and sustained drop in demand for electric vans is of deep concern given the ambitious and mandated sales targets required this year and beyond. There is a pressing need to stimulate operator confidence which means providing long term certainty over the Plug-in Van Grant, maintaining fiscal incentives, and accelerating the rollout of van-suitable charging infrastructure. Without these measures, the ability of the UK to meet its net zero goals while driving economic growth will be put under pressure. We will continue to report on industry news and trends in future issues.

Best wishes

Pay-per-mile car tax bands will cost drivers £190 if they do this mileage

It could cost motorists, road users and drivers a whopping £190 each, according to early projections, with the Labour Party government set to introduce the changes.

The changes come ahead of the ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars in 2035. Rachel Reeves, the new Labour Party Chancellor, could introduce the scheme for motorists in a bid to build a “fairer” system across the country. Fuel duty is now 53p a litre for petrol and diesel vehicles. Zero-emission cars will also pay vehicle tax for the first time in 2025. The charity CBT - Campaign for Better Transport - is leading a forum of 37 organisations supporting reform, including motoring and other transport industry bodies.

What is a pay-per-mile scheme?

Using a pay-per-mile system will not only generate the income needed to cover the expected drop in road tax, we’re told it will put drivers off using unnecessary cars of all types. This would help to reduce congestion, especially if proposed variable rates of road charging were used, with high-traffic hours costing more than low-traffic ones.

Silviya Barrett of CBT said: “The new chancellor faces a looming black hole. She can avoid it, in a way which is fair, and which garners broad public support. But she should start now, as this issue will only get more pressing.” CBT said the easiest first step would be to levy a small pay-per-mile charge on zero-emission vehicles, with a transition period exempting existing drivers.

The letter said the group “fully appreciate that such a change would be difficult and be criticised by the opposition”. However, it said its research showed that 65% of the public believe it is fair for electric car drivers to be taxed, but at a lower rate than petrol and diesel drivers.

Who will pay more under pay-per-mile?

Andrew Jervis, CEO of ClickMechanic says three groups of motorists could be hit worst. He says they could impacted under a pay-per-mile system with commuters, families and those in rural areas likely to face the highest fees.

Andrew says motorists who barely use their cars still have to pay this amount to drive on UK road. He said: “There are people out there who pay the current £190 Vehicle Excise Duty while barely using their vehicles, so a pay-per-mile scheme would give them some extra money in their pockets each year.”

Who will pay less under pay-per-mile?

Drivers who do not get behind their wheel often will “likely” notice a reduction in their annual car bills if the change is brought in. Currently, the UK’s Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) fee is set at a flat £190 per year for petrol and diesel owners regardless of how often they use the roads.

How much will pay-per-mile cost me?

According to analysis from the paper, drivers travelling fewer than 3,166 miles per year would save on the £190 VED fee. However, this mileage estimate doesn’t take into account fuel duty which could also be combined into any new pay-per-mile fee.

This would place the cut-off between saving on car tax or paying more at around 9,500 miles per year.- Previous governments have had to back away from the idea of pay-per-mile or road charging schemes as politically toxic, despite widespread support from experts and MPs on the transport committee.

T• With new unique to Mazda styling features the Mazda2 Hybrid is on sale now.

• Line-up in UK feature Centre-Line, Exclusive-Line, Homura and Homura Plus grades.

• The Mazda2 Hybrid will continue to be sold alongside the well-established Mazda2

MAZDA2 HYBRID2

he latest Mazda2 Hybrid has a more differentiated design appearance thanks to a new, and unique to Mazda, front bumper and grille design. Designed at Mazda’s European Design Studio in Germany, the revised bumper shape combined with unique rear tailgate garnish gives the latest Mazda2 Hybrid a fresh and independent look.

Launched in May 2022, the Mazda2 Hybrid has proven to be a popular addition to Mazda’s line-up in the UK where it sells alongside the established and recently updated Mazda2, ensuring Mazda offers customers a huge choice in the small hatchback market. The updated Mazda2 Hybrid will continue to sell alongside the Mazda2, maintaining Mazda’s extensive supermini line-up.

In the UK, the Mazda2 Hybrid is on sale now and available in four new grades: Centre-Line, Exclusive-Line, Homura and Homura Plus. Alongside the Mazda specific updates to the exterior design, the Mazda2 Hybrid features connectivity and entertainment upgrades across

the range, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a new colour touch screen central display.

Exclusive-Line models and upwards feature new equipment that includes auto-folding mirrors, Blind-Spot Monitoring, plus front and rear parking sensors, while at the top of the range the Homura and Homura Plus grades feature a new digital instrument binnacle and black roof lining.

Exclusive to Homura Plus grade, the Mazda2 Hybrid also features integrated navigation and a panoramic glass roof.

Part of Mazda’s electrified line-up that includes the battery electric Mazda MX-30, Mazda CX-60 PHEV, Mazda CX-80 PHEV and Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV PHEV - the Mazda2 Hybrid brings a self-charging full hybrid powertrain technology to the Mazda model range.

Part of the long-standing collaboration between Mazda Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation, this Toyota Motor Europe OEM supplied model will now feature a more Mazda differentiated exterior design but retains an unchanged drivetrain.

With a combined power output of 116ps driven via a CVT automatic transmission, the Mazda2 Hybrid accelerates from 0-62mph in 9.7 seconds and returns a WLTP combined cycle fuel economy of between 67.3 to 74.3mpg and CO2 emissions of just 87-98g/km depending on the specification of 16” or 15” wheels.

At start-up the Mazda2 Hybrid automatically runs in EV mode, offering smooth, seamless and quiet running on electric motor power in urban environments, with zero CO2, NOx and particulate emissions. During normal driving, power allocation is adjusted between the petrol engine and electric motor for optimum performance and the best possible fuel efficiency. During deceleration and under braking, kinetic energy is recovered as electrical energy for storage in the high-performance battery. Battery power level is constantly managed via an engine-

driven generator to remove any need to recharge the system from an external source. Although it is a compact B-segment vehicle, the new Mazda2 Hybrid’s long 2,560 mm wheelbase offers comfortable accommodation for up to four adults, as well as 286 litres of boot space. Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director Mazda UK said: “the Mazda2 Hybrid has proved to be a popular addition to our line-up in the UK, so it’s great that we now have a car with a greater element of Mazda exterior design personality. With the latest Mazda2 Hybrid sold alongside the Mazda2, we are giving customers in the supermini segment the choice of two distinct models, depending on their needs, ensuring Mazda has the widest customer offering in a sector that has seen several key models disappear in recent months.”

KOREAN GENUINELY MADE

ON These Models

Latest statistics show that there has been a 41% increase in zero emission vehicles registered for the first time.

The UK’s charging network continues to grow at pace – there are now over 50,000 public chargepoints, with 44% more than this time last year, putting the country well on track to reach 300,000 chargepoints by 2030. The certainty of the ZEV mandate will give industry renewed confidence to invest in our infrastructure.

Additionally, last month the UK and EU agreed to extend trade rules on electric vehicles, saving manufacturers and consumers up to £4.3 billion in additional costs and providing long-term certainty for industry.

Akira Kirton, Vice President, BP Pulse UK, said:

“We are pleased to host the minister at our most powerful EV charging hub in central London to mark the start of the ZEV mandate.

“This mandate instils confidence in our strategy, reaffirming our plans to invest £1 billion over 10 years to continue to develop hundreds of EV charging hubs across the country by 2030 to bolster the UK’s charging infrastructure.”

BP Pulse’s approach to decarbonising transport has already attracted record investment in gigafactories and EV manufacturing, including:

•Nissan’s recent investment of over £3 billion to develop 2 new electric vehicles at their Sunderland plant

•Tata’s investment of over £4 billion in a new 40 GW h gigafactory

•BMW’s investment of £600 million to build next generation MINI EVs in Oxford

•Ford’s investment of £380 million in Halewood to make electric drive units

•Stellantis’ £100 million investment in Ellesmere Port for EV van production

The government also continues to support the rollout of EV infrastructure. Applications for the first round of the £381 million Local EV Infrastructure Fund are currently being assessed. This funding will deliver tens of thousands more chargepoints in local areas across England and transform the availability of charging for drivers without off-street parking. The government has also launched a £70 million pilot to support the deployment of ultra-rapid charging points at motorway service areas.

Andrew Brem, General Manager of Uber UK, said:

“London is Uber’s top city for EVs worldwide, with well over 10,000 electric vehicles on the platform in the capital. However, the availability and up-front cost of EVs can still be a barrier for many drivers.

“The ZEV mandate coming into force is a significant moment which will help to drive down the costs of EVs and increase supply – accelerating the uptake of EVs over the next decade.

“As part of our Plan for drivers, we intend to consult on ways to make installations cheaper and quicker for chargepoint operators, review the grid connections process for chargepoints, and also consult on the expansion of permitted development rights to make installations easier.”

The latest noise on the street: Introducing the new Toyota Aygo X JBL

Special edition of Toyota’s compact urban crossover celebrates JBL in-car audio excellence

Model features 300W premium sound system, including 200mm subwoofer

Jasmine Silver/black bi-tone exterior with black styling details and 18-inch black/Dark Jasmine alloy wheels

JBL brand logos applied to the rear window panel and seat trims

UK pricing and availability to be announced later in 2024

The new Aygo X JBL is a special edition of the compact urban crossover that celebrates the highquality in-car systems designed by Toyota’s premium audio partner.

Aygo X has been attracting styleconscious customers since first hitting the road in 2022, building on the youthful and fun character established by generations of Toyota’s Aygo city car over the previous two decades. It’s a one-of-kind model in today’s market, with stronger emotional appeal enhanced by SUV-influenced styling and a higher driving positions.

This emotional dimension was also captured by JBL’s audio experts who crafted a sound system specifically for Aygo Cross that’s been offered as an option on previous models and is now featured as standard on the new special edition.

Defining the sound system’s specifications began while Aygo X was still in the development phase, using virtual models to determine the most suitable equipment. As well as sound quality, JBL engineers prioritised weight-saving to contribute to the car’s overall fuel efficiency and low tailpipe emissions.

Hundreds of hours precision work and adjustments went into designing a dynamic sound system that’s tailored to Aygo X’s specific interior characteristics. The positioning of the speakers plays a key part in creating a wide sound stage, achieved by installing two full-range speakers in the front doors and 25mm tweeters in the front pillars.

At the rear there is a 200mm subwoofer – large for a car of Aygo X’s size. This generates powerful bass, dynamic speaker response and a clear sound. A 300W amplifier is located beneath the front passenger seat, with six channels used to fine-tune frequencies to produce concert-style sound reproduction, ideally suited to rock and pop music.

Using the Toyota Smart Connect multimedia system, favourite sounds can be easily selected with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto via wireless connection and controlled using the high-resolution 10.5-inch touchscreen on the centre console.

While the sound system stimulates the ear, the car’s exterior catches the eyes with a new bi-tone paint combination of Jasmine Silver and black. The effect is heightened by black deco elements on the front, rear and side underruns. The bi-tone design extends to the rear of the car, merging with the side rockers and front wheel arches to create a distinctive look, accentuated by 18-inch alloys that are finished in black with a Jasmine Silver highlight.

JBL branding signatures are featured inside and out: there is a JBL logo on the rear of the car while inside the colour-matched upholstery also features the JBL logo,

The Aygo X JBL special edition’s launch is supported by a specially produced playlist, The Sound of Noise*, which celebrates the car’s creation. Details of UK pricing and availability will be announced later in 2024
