Putting car dealers in front of car buyers NATIONALLY

The UK new car market has hit the half year million motors mark for the first time in five years, after new car registrations rose in June by a modest 1.1% to reach 179,263 units, according to new figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). As a result, so far in 2024, 1,006,763 new cars have been registered, up 6.0% on the previous year but still down -20.7% on 2019.

June’s market growth was driven primarily by the fleet sector, where uptake rose by 14.2%, while private retail demand fell for the ninth consecutive month, down -15.3%. Retail buyers accounted for fewer than four in 10 new cars registered (37.7%).

Electrified vehicle uptake continued to grow robustly in June, with plug-in hybrid (PHEV) volumes up 30.0% to reach a 9.3% market share, while hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) rose 27.2% to achieve 14.9% of the market. Both powertrains also outpaced battery electric vehicle growth (BEV), which rose 7.4% but took its highest monthly share this year, accounting for 19.0% of all new vehicle registrations.

Vehicle Excise Duty plans should also be revised so zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) are classed as essential rather than “luxury” vehicles, by amending the ‘expensive car’ supplement due to be applied from next April. In addition, public charge point use could be made fairer by reducing VAT from 20% to 5%, in line with home charging – a move that would support ZEV uptake and send the right message to consumers.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said:

The year’s midpoint sees the new car market in its best state since 2021 – but this belies the bigger challenge ahead. The private consumer market continues to shrink against a difficult economic backdrop, but with the right policies in place, the next government can re-energise the market and deliver a faster, fairer zero emission transition. All parties are agreed on the need to cut carbon and replacing older fossil fuel based technologies with new electrified powertrains is the essential step to achieving that goal.

We will continue to report on the Industry’s movement in future issues.

Best wishes

Yellow heat warning: parents and dog owners more wary but AA attends up to five dangerous car lock-outs each day

Research has shown that drivers who carry children and pets in their cars have become conscious of the threat of their vehicles being turned into ovens on hot days. However, the AA is having to rescue car occupants locked in dangerously hot cars as many as five times a day.

The UK Health Security Agency has issued yellow heat warnings for the early part of this week (Heat health alerts | UKHSA data dashboard) :

The AA offers the following advice:

Drivers with occupants vulnerable to severe heat should plan their journeys for cooler parts of the day

Carrying extra water, at least one litre per person, and the means to create shade, such as sun screens or even just towels, is a wise precaution

Keeping the vehicle well ventilated and seeking shade, such as a covered car park, while allowing occupants to wait under the shade of trees or covered areas will be more comfortable

Create a deliberate routine for ensuring that car keys remain on the driver’s person and not locked in the car

Tyres are more susceptible to blow-outs on hot roads as are engines overheating. Check tyre pressures in cooler times of the day. Be diligent with vehicle cooling systems and seek advice from a mechanic if unsure.

Following the extreme heat of 2022 (2022_03_july_heatwave_v1 (metoffice. gov.uk)), the AA surveyed 2,538 of its members who have dogs and transport their animals in the cars:

“Be aware of the dangers and never leave children, the elderly and animals in over-heated vehicles. Be smart and plan journeys accordingly, be careful and keep car keys on your person, and be prepared should you have to stop for an extended period in the sun.

“If your car breaks down when temperatures are high, it’s even more important than usual that we get to you as quickly as we can. The quickest way for our members to report a breakdown is through the AA breakdown app.

“Knowing your exact location is vital to us, so downloading the what3words app (w3w) and reporting your unique w3w location can help us to reach you faster. Try to wait in the shade in a safe place.

“Carry plenty of water – at least one litre per person travelling. Keeping yourself and other occupants hydrated can help lower body temperatures in hot weather. If the worst should happen, you can keep yourself and those with you topped up with cool water while waiting for help to arrive.”

All-newToyotaC-HRcrownedBestHybridandNewCaroftheYear intheAutomotiveManagementAwards

Toyota’s multi-path technology strategy for delivering sustained reductions in carbon emissions on the journey to ultimate carbon neutrality has helped secure two prestigious awards for the all-new Toyota C-HR.

The Toyota C-HR Plug-in is winner of the Best Hybrid in the Automotive Man agement (AM) Awards, while the Toyota C-HR range is AM’s New Car of the Year.

Tim Rose, AM Editor, said: “Our dealer readers are clearly impressed with the Toyota C-HR as they vote d for it to win a fantastic duo of awards. In plug-in guise it has stand-out style, comfort and instant zip, and it’s frugal too. And no matter the p owertrain, any C-HR stands out from the crowd with its cool looks, excellen t real-world efficiency and a plush interior filled with tech that’s easy to use. It really shows the fun side of Toyo -ta.”

Stuart Sanders, Toyota (GB) Communications an d Product Director, comme nted: “The Toyota C-HR is a suc cessful standard-bearer for our approach to achieving mean ingful and lasting reductions in carbon emissions through multiple technology solutions. More than that, as these great awards acknowledge , we’ve made it a highly desirable proposition in terms of impactful design, advanced equipment specifications and extension of its Toyota Safety Sense systems to provide even higher levels of p rotection and assistance.”

The second ge neration model of the popular coupe-styled midsize SUV offers customers more hybrid powertrain choices with 1.8 and 2.0-litre full hybrids and a new 2.0 -litre plug-in hybrid, creating a lin e-up that’s unmatched in its class. All three systems benefit from fifth generation Toyota hybrid technology

which maximises fuel and emissions efficiency while delivering smooth, responsive performance and enhanced all-electric EV driving capability

With 223bhp available, The Toyota C-HR Plug-in is the performance leader in the range, and also the most energy and emissions-efficient. On a full battery charge it has an official (WLTP) driving range of up to 41 miles; unlike most competitor plug-in hybrid systems, when the battery charge is depleted the vehicle switches seamlessly to hybrid operation, rather than defaulting to its petrol engine, ensuring a high level of fuel and emissions efficiency is maintained.

These qualities are matched with contemporary exterior styling that presents an even stronger rendition of the coupe-inspired lines of the original Toyota C-HR. Technology features are equally cutting edge, with a fully digital user experience that includes a customisable driver’s instrument combimeter and multimedia systems that are quick to respond and easier to operate using touchscreens or simple, conversational voice commands. Similarly, the Toyota Safety Sense package features new, extended and enhanced systems that can provide assistance in an even wider range of common accident risk scenarios.

Happy Birthday, Volkswagen Golf!

TOYOTA has announced the UK model range and pricing for the all-new Land Cruiser. The latest generation of the legendary SUV will become available from July, with first deliveries to customers expected from September this year.

Due to strictly limited supply and high customer demand, it is expected that the initial allocation of vehicles will be accounted for immediately.

Backed by a heritage spanning more than 70 years, the all-new Land Cruiser is faithful to its origins as a vehicle that delivers supreme quality, durability and reliability. Building on the achievements of its predecessors, the all-new model has even greater capabilities for dealing with the harshest environments, while providing comfort, poise and specifications that meet all the requirements of modern day-to-day driving

The line-up offers two versions of the first, all-new Land Cruiser generation since 2009: Invincible and First Edition, both in fivedoor body styles. They are powered by an updated 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine and feature a new eight-speed automatic transmission. A 48V mild hybrid powertrain will debut in the range in 2025.

The First Edition is exclusively available during the Land Cruiser’s 2024 launch period and is being built in limited numbers. Its design references the styling of the classic Land Cruiser 40 model of the 1960s with round headlights and a bi-tone paintwork that matches Smoky Blue or Light Sand bodywork with a Light Grey roof. It also features First Edition badging and 18-inch black alloy wheels. Inside, styling details of the upholstery, instrument panel and door trims are all exclusive to the model.

Both the First Edition and Invincible have seven seats with black leather upholstery. Equipment features include air conditioning with separate front and rear cabin controls and the Toyota Smart Connect+ multimedia system with 12.3-inch touchscreen and both cloud-based and embedded navigation. A head-up display, fully digital driver’s instrument combimeter, 14-speaker JBL audio system, Panoramic View Monitor, roof rails and a sunroof are also included. The Invincible has 20-inch black alloy wheels.

Features that support its off-road performance include the Multi Terrain Select system, which automatically adjusts vehicle settings to suit different driving conditions, and the world-first in a Toyota vehicle, Stabiliser Disconnect Mechanism, which allows the driver to disengage the front anti-roll bar (stabiliser) to help maintain front-wheel contact with the ground on very uneven surfaces. The new GA-F platform and classic body-on-frame construction further contribute to off-road strength, while the introduction of electric power steering for the first time in a Land Cruiser helps make for more comfortable and responsive performance.

On-the-road prices are £74,995 for the Land Cruiser Invincible and £79,995 for the First Edition.

Both models are five-door versions with seven seats, with equipment features including Toyota Smart Connect+ multimedia system, head-up display, JBL premium sound system and sunroof.

Customer vehicle deliveries from September 2024.

Government provides £56 million funding boost for EV chargers

Local authorities across the UK will gain funding to hasten the roll-out of public electric vehicle charging points.

The government has announced a major increase in funding to support the roll-out of public electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

A total of £56 million will be made available, with the aim of delivering 2,400 new EV charging points in the near-future.

The money will also help local authorities to plan for thousands more charging devices in the longer term.

The announcement follows analysis earlier this year that showed the UK was lagging behind its target to install 300,000 public electric car charge points by 2030.

Extra EV funding across the UK

The new funding will expand the existing Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) pilot scheme, taking it from three to 16 local authority areas.

This includes £1.9 million for Cumbria, £2.5 million for Waltham Forest and a substantial £8.5 million committed to the West Midlands.

In total, £22 million from central government funding will be supported by £17 million from private initiatives. A further £2 million will come from public funds across the various local authorities.

A new £8 million LEVI Capability Fund will help local authorities to put in place the right staff and systems to plan for EV charging infrastructure.

Helping drivers switch to EVs

As part of the package of measures, the government has also committed £7 million to the On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme (ORCS).

This provides funding for local authorities to locate chargers in areas without off-street parking. Some 3,000 devices have already been installed through ORCS, with a further 10,000 on the way.

Transport minister for technology and decarbonisation, Jesse Norman, said: “The government is giving local authorities across England additional help today to energise their charge point roll-out plans.
