K car production declined in March, down -27.1% year on year to 59,467 units, according to the latest figures published today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). It was the first fall since August last year and is in line with expectations for a variable year, as manufacturers adjust factories to produce the next generation of cars, notably electric, winding down volumes of existing models in the process. An early 2024 Easter bank holiday also played a part, with fewer working days this March than the year before.

Volumes for the UK declined marginally, down just -0.3% to 19,995 units, while production for export fell -35.9% to 39,472 units, although more than six-in-10 cars made in March were shipped overseas. Continuing recent trends, the European Union received by far the bulk of exports (57.9%) followed by the US (11.4%), China (5.9%), Australia (4.0%) and Japan (1.8%). Shipments to the top five export markets, apart from the US, all fell.

Electrified vehicle (battery electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid) volumes again represented more than a third of all production (38.4%) with manufacturers producing a combined 22,865 units, although this was down -29.7% on the year before in part reflecting the issues outlined earlier, notably model changeovers.

Overall, UK car production remained up 1.1% in the first quarter, at 222,371 units, with a 33.9% rise in output for the UK offsetting a -7.4% decline in exports. Despite this fall, by far the majority – 72.7% – of all cars made in Britain in Q1 were for export.

UK commercial vehicle (CV) output rose by 27.4% in the first quarter of 2024, the best Q1 performance since 2008, according to figures published today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).1 32,626 vans, trucks, taxis, buses and coaches left factory lines, up 18.6% on pre-pandemic 2019 volumes, with demand driven by overseas orders.2 Exports rose 57.9% to 23,060 units in the first quarter - an increase of 8,452 vehicles to account for 70.7% of year to date output, up from 57.0% in Q1 2023 – thanks to demand for the latest cutting edge and increasingly zero emission British-built CVs. The EU remained the top export destination, with more than nine in 10 vehicles (96.7%) heading for the bloc. Production for the UK market, meanwhile, declined -13.1% to 9,566 units.

The latest independent production outlook now expects UK car and light van production to fall -6.2% to some 940,000 units this year, mainly due to multiple model changeovers, before returning to growth in 2025.

Output is anticipated to get back above a million units from 2026 and reach 1.2 million before the end of the decade as more EV production comes on stream across the UK. We will continue to report on the Motor Industry’s ongoing ebbs and flows in future issues – onward and upward.

Net zero means leaving no motorist – or sector – behind

B

ritain’s motorists and businesses got behind the wheel in record numbers last year while at the same time reducing their carbon emissions,new Motorparc figures from SMMT this week show. More than 41.4 million cars, vans, trucks and buses were in use in 2023, with the biggest jump in car ownership since 2016 – in part thanks to new zero emission vehicle (ZEV) uptake almost doubling year on year. The carbon saving as a result was equivalent to the average UK car emitting -2.1% less CO2 annually, underlining the importance of getting more ZEVs on our roads.

It’s a mission statement not just for the car but the van, bus and truck sectors, too, each facing similarly ambitious decarbonisation targets yet at very different stages of their transition. Demand for the greenest trucks is some way behind them all, however, with ZEVs accounting for just one in 200 new HGVs registered. This makes the 2035 end of sale of new fossil-fuel powered trucks weighing up to 26 tonnes, which account for more than 70% of the market, an immense challenge that needs urgent attention from policymakers.

Manufacturers have committed billions to bring a huge range of competitive ZEV models to market but, to get mass adoption rolling, Britain needs a globally competitive environment for fleet decarbonisation enabling operators to access the latest, greenest vehicles and use them to their full potential. Major industry innovation was clear to see at this week’s Commercial Vehicle Show, featuring some 118 new HGVs and light commercial vehicles coming to market – many of them zero emission. As set out in a new SMMT paper published at the event, however, a ‘next generation’ Plug-in Truck Grant is essential for more operators to switch to the latest zero emission trucks, along with a nationally joined-up plan for ZEV infrastructure at depots and public locations.

Given the time such projects will take to complete, such a plan is already well overdue.

Infrastructure is still one of the biggest barriers to greater EV adoption across all vehicle types, so it was disappointing that government last week, in its response to a House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee report, ruled out putting public charging VAT on par with home charging. The move would have ensured a fairer transition for consumers and sent a message that the time to switch is now. SMMT’s latest car manufacturing data shows industry is already well committed to a mass transition, with OEMs continuing to adjust their factories to make a new generation of cars, notably electric.

The latest independent outlook, meanwhile, expects zero emission commercial vehicle output to continue its growth across 2024. But mass adoption of these vehicles now depends on factors beyond the factory gate. It’s high time that all new vehicle buyers – from consumers to fleet operators – got the encouragement they sorely need.

The central console features a smartphone induction charging mat, including red clay powder in the manufacturing process.

Similarly, ‘red clay’ loop-pile mats add the finishing touch to the interior. The brushed aluminium door sills feature a Cross of Saint Andrew, inspired by the architecture of the Roland Garros stadium, and spelling out the name “Roland Garros Paris”.

The Roland-Garros special series of Renault 5 E-Tech electric features an elegant and sporty design. Four body colours are available: pearl white, midnight blue, starry black and an exclusive shade of matt slate grey. These colours are a perfect match for the chrome satin-finish roof trim and Ecrou 18-inch diamond-cut wheels in glossy black. The specially designed wheels add a further touch of elegance with a hub cap in a matt shade of slate grey.

The lower part of the front doors features a Roland Garros logo in the centre of a design representing the Cross of Saint Andrew, inspired by the architecture of the stadium. The roof of Renault 5 E-Tech electric Roland-Garros boasts a textile-finish grained film in satin black.

Inside the car, the special light grey upholstery with its dense, fine, graphic weave is inspired by technical clothing from the world of sport. This fully recycled textile includes a number of open-weave features, including the H-shape of the backrest. The overall effect is enhanced by blue TEP-upholstered lateral supports. The backrests of the front seats are heat-embossed with the Roland-Garros logo.

Get early access to the Renault 5 with R Pass Costing £150, the R Pass guarantees a chance to be among the first customers to order and receive a Renault 5 in the UK. These cars will be fitted with a 52 kWh battery.

This seat fabric is also visible on the door panels and fascia strip, alongside the blue TEP. A ‘blue white clay’ embroidery feature has been added under the passenger air vent. The dashboard trim strip gains a satin metal finish, together with backlighting spelling out the name ‘Roland Garros Paris’.

INI fans looked forward to the 18th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition 2024. During April 25 to May 4, MINI presented the new generation of the new MINI Family at the China International Exhibition Center in Beijing. As part of the Chinese motor show with the theme “New Era, New Cars,” MINI celebrated the world premiere of the first-ever MINI Aceman.

With its independent, all-electric vehicle concept, the MINI Aceman occupies the position between the MINI Cooper and the MINI Countryman.

MINI John Cooper Works Countryman

Together with the electric MINI Cooper in both power levels “E” and “SE” and the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman ALL4 with intelligent all-wheel drive, MINI is presenting the range of its new product portfolio at the Auto China 2024.

Auto China has been held in Beijing every two years since 1990. On more than 200,000 square meters of exhibition space, over 700 exhibitors present their portfolio in what is currently the world’s largest automotive market.

The MINI Cooper: Maximum emotion in a minimal footprint.

With a fully electric drive, the MINI Cooper is available as Cooper E and with higher performance and range Cooper SE. Together with the octagonal front grille, the iconic round headlights define the distinctive face of the all-electric vehicle. As with the entire new model family, four vehicle trims (Essential, Classic, Favoured, JCW Trim) are available for the MINI Cooper.

At Auto China 2024, the MINI Cooper SE in British Racing Green is a reminiscent of the racing successes of its classic predecessor.

In Classic Trim, the two-tone black and blue knit surface on the dashboard and doors provides an elegant contrast to the high-quality seats made of vescin. The interior of the MINI Cooper is based on the new MINI design language “Charismatic Simplicity.” The round OLED display, the characteristic toggle switch bar and the redesigned steering wheel characterize the minimalistic look of the cockpit.

MINI Cooper E

At its booth in Beijing, MINI also presents the Cooper SE in John Cooper Works Trim. The red contrasting roof adds a characteristic highlight to the Legend Grey shade. Exclusive design features such as the distinctive diffusers in the front and rear areas, the radiator grille and the JCW logo in high-gloss black emphasize the sporty character of the trim. In the interior, JCW sports seats with multi-colored knitwear and black synthetic leather with red stitching reflect the color scheme of the dashboard and door panel.

The MINI John Cooper Works Countryman ALL4: Powerful versatility even off paved roads. Also in Beijing: The largest MINI. With standard ALL4 all-wheel drive and 221 kW/300 hp high-performance engine, the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman ALL4 (combined fuel consumption: 8.3 — 7.8 l/100 km in accordance with WLTP; combined CO 2 emissions: 187 — 177 g/km; CO2 class: A) sprints from standstill to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds.

At Auto China 2024, MINI presented the Cooper E. The exclusive exterior details of the equipment variant are expressively showcased in Sunny Side Yellow with contrasting roof and mirror caps in white.

The MINI Cooper E impresses with 135 kW/184 hp and thrilling acceleration without delay. The battery of the MINI Cooper E (combined power consumption: 14.3-13.8 kWh/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km; CO2 class: A) achieves a range of 305 kilometers in the WLTP test cycle with a capacity of 40.7 kWh. 28 minutes of charging time at 75 kW is enough to charge the MINI Cooper E battery from 10 percent to 80 percent.

The typical JCW, contrasting chili red on the mirror caps, the roof and the inlays on the air outlets, together with the shiny Midnight Black shade, accentuate the sportiness of the model. The interior of the versatile MINI model offers plenty of space. This means that even bulky items can be transported in the luggage compartment with a volume of up to 1,450 liters when the bench is folded down.

The MINI Experience Modes are available for particularly immersive driving experiences. In addition to specific graphic elements on the OLED display, MINI fans can experience the entire interior in a new way through special lighting graphics in different colors and patterns.

Electrified go-kart feeling with increased range: In the MINI Cooper SE (combined power consumption: 14.7 — 14.1 kWh/ 100 km according to WLTP; combined CO 2 emissions: 0 g/km; CO2 class: A), the spontaneous power delivery of the 160 kW/218 hp electric motor creates even more emotions. The high-voltage battery with a capacity of 54.2 kWh achieves a range of up to 402 kilometers in the WLTP test cycle.

TOYOTA LAND CRUISER All-new model range and pricing announced: available to UK customers in two versions – Invincible and First Edition

OYOTA has announced the UK model range and pricing for the all-new Land Cruiser. The latest generation of the legendary SUV will become available from July, with first deliveries to customers expected from September this year.

Both the First Edition and Invincible have seven seats with black leather upholstery. Equipment features include air conditioning with separate front and rear cabin controls and the Toyota Smart Connect+ multimedia system with 12.3-inch touchscreen and both cloud-based and embedded navigation. A head-up display, fully digital driver’s instrument combimeter, 14-speaker JBL audio system, Panoramic View Monitor, roof rails and a sunroof are also included.

The Invincible has 20-inch black alloy wheels.

Due to strictly limited supply and high customer demand, it is expected that the initial allocation of vehicles will be accounted for immediately.

Backed by a heritage spanning more than 70 years, the all-new Land Cruiser is faithful to its origins as a vehicle that delivers supreme quality, durability and reliability. Building on the achievements of its predecessors, the all-new model has even greater capabilities for dealing with the harshest environments, while providing comfort, poise and specifications that meet all the requirements of modern day-to-day driving

Features that support its off-road performance include the Multi Terrain Select system, which automatically adjusts vehicle settings to suit different driving conditions, and the world-first in a Toyota vehicle, Stabiliser Disconnect Mechanism, which allows the driver to disengage the front anti-roll bar (stabiliser) to help maintain front-wheel contact with the ground on very uneven surfaces. The new GA-F platform and classic body-on-frame construction further contribute to off-road strength, while the introduction of electric power steering for the first time in a Land Cruiser helps make for more comfortable and responsive performance.

The line-up offers two versions of the first, all-new Land Cruiser generation since 2009: Invincible and First Edition, both in fivedoor body styles. They are powered by an updated 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine and feature a new eight-speed automatic transmission.

A 48V mild hybrid powertrain will debut in the range in 2025.

On-the-road prices are £74,995 for the Land Cruiser Invincible and £79,995 for the First Edition.

The First Edition is exclusively available during the Land Cruiser’s 2024 launch period and is being built in limited numbers. Its design references the styling of the classic Land Cruiser 40 model of the 1960s with round headlights and a bi-tone paintwork that matches Smoky Blue or Light Sand bodywork with a Light Grey roof. It also features First Edition badging and 18-inch black alloy wheels. Inside, styling details of the upholstery, instrument panel and door trims are all exclusive to the model.

Both models are five-door versions with seven seats, with equipment features including Toyota Smart Connect+ multimedia system, head-up display, JBL premium sound system and sunroof.

Hyundai Motor is demonstrating its commitment to China by bringing some of its most important models to one of the world’s largest automotive market

yundai Motor Company is bolstering its brand competitiveness in the Chinese market by introducing its IONIQ 5 N high-performance electric vehicle (EV), all-new SANTA FE and the new TUCSON at the 2024 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.

The company is demonstrating its commitment to the Chinese market by bringing some of its most important and in-demand models in an exhibition space that spans 1,208 square meters and features zones for new models, Hyundai N and the company’s hydrogen technology capabilities.

The New Model Zone spotlights the IONIQ 5 N, IONIQ 5 N Drift Spec, the all-new SANTA FE and the SANTA FE XRT concept.

Also on display are mass-produced models including the SONATA launched in China in March, the SONATA N-Line, the PALISADE SUV, and the new TUCSON. The Hyundai N Zone showcases a range of N models, including vehicles like the ELANTRA N1 Cup Car, ELANTRA N and N Vision 74, and specialized N Performance Parts. The zone also features the N Racing Simulator that allows visitors to experience the dynamic driving feeling and technology of high-performance N vehicles.

In the Hydrogen Technology Zone, Hyundai Motor presents its ‘HTWO Grid’ solution which combines the capabilities of Hyundai Motor Group’s affiliates to encompass all stages of the hydrogen value chain, production-storage transportation-utilization. As a customized comprehensive hydrogen energy solution, it can be tailored to the needs of different users. The zone also exhibits the W2H (Waste-to-Hydrogen) diorama and hydrogen fuel cell EV NEXO’s China model, showcasing the conversion of hydrogen fuel cell systems and organic wastes into hydrogen, highlighting the company’s commitment to eco-friendly mobility.

The high-performance IONIQ 5 N, in particular, will be a major differentiator for Hyundai Motor in the world’s largest EV market.

Notably, its debut in Beijing marks the first anniversary of the Hyundai N’s entry into China at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show.

Since its global debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July last year, IONIQ 5 N has generated a lot of buzz and garnered numerous accolades, including the 2023 TopGear.com Awards, the World Performance Car by World Car Awards, and the 2024 iF Design Awards.

As the Hyundai N’s first high-performance EV, IONIQ 5 N integrates Hyundai Motor’s advanced electrification technology to maximize driving performance. It serves as a symbolic model that showcases Hyundai Motor Way, the core electrification strategy that promotes flexible electrification and builds on the brand’s design heritage.

“IONIQ 5 N embodies the three key elements of the Hyundai N: Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability and Everyday Sports Car,” said Till Wartenberg, Vice President and Head of N Brand and Motorsport at Hyundai Motor Company.

“This model opens new horizons for high-performance EVs, offering driving excitement that remains unchanged even in the era of electrification.”

Hyundai Motor plans to launch the IONIQ 5 N in China during the second half of the year, supported by specialized marketing campaigns that will allow more customers to experience the driving pleasure and high-performance technology championed by the Hyundai N. Also att the Beijing Auto Show, Hyundai Motor also introduced the all-new SANTA FE and the new TUCSON to strengthen the company’s SUV lineup, joining the strategic Chinese model, MUFASA, that launched a year ago.

The all-new SANTA FE comes five years after the release of the fourth-generation model in the Chinese market in April 2019. The company plans to launch it in the second half of the year.

The all-new SANTA FE stands out with its strong presence, long wheelbase and distinctive silhouette characterized by a wide tailgate. It features the iconic H light design, H motif’s front bumper and a bold roofline that emphasizes its grand presence. Furthermore, the SUV offers a spacious and enjoyable living space that allows passengers to embrace outdoor life at any time. The large tailgate space, designed with a terrace concept, can be utilized in various ways to accommodate passengers’ lifestyles.

In addition, Hyundai Motor introduced the new TUCSON, which the company plans to launch in the first half of the year. Notably, the new Tucson has been tailored to meet the preferences of Chinese customers who favor larger vehicles. It features a 30 mm expanded length, which allows a spacious interior with 4,670 mm of length and a 2,755 mm wheelbase, enhancing its market appeal.

With SANTA FE, TUCSON and MUFASA, a strategic compact SUV launched in China in June last year, Hyundai Motor aims to cater to the diverse demands of Chinese consumers through its expanded SUV lineup.
