Editor’s Letter UK new car registrations fell -24.3% in June according to the latest figures released today by the SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders). The month saw 140,958 new vehicles registered, the weakest June performance since 1996. The semiconductor shortage continues to stifle the new car market even more than last year’s lockdown. Electric vehicle demand continues to be the one bright spot, as more electric cars than ever take to the road, but while this growth is welcome it is not yet enough to offset weak overall volumes, which has huge implications for fleet renewal and our ability to meet overall carbon reduction targets. With motorists facing rising fuel costs, however, the switch to an electric car makes ever more sense and the industry is working hard to improve supply and prioritise deliveries of these new technologies given the savings they can afford drivers. The UK used car market has grown in Q1 of this year with 1,774,351 cars changing hands according to figures from the SMMT.

The most-bought model across all fuel types in the opening three months of the year was the Ford Fiesta, with 73,851 finding a new owner. The Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Golf are the next most commonly purchased used motors, with 61,236 and 56,787 changing hands respectively in Q1. Motorists reminded of the importance in renewing their photocard driving licences

M

otorists must renew their photocard licence when it expires. If they fail to renew their licence and supply a photo that is a recent and true likeness, they will be breaking the law and may have to pay a fine of up to £1,000. It is important that licences are renewed. Appearances can change and it is important that photocard licences are updated every 10 years to ensure the police and other enforcement agencies have the best possible photograph. This helps them correctly identify whether a driving licence is being used fraudulently and also prevents driving licence impersonation – stopping disqualified and perhaps dangerous drivers taking to the roads. Getting a new photocard will mean that a motorist’s driving licence will contain the latest security features to protect them against fraud. It may also make things easier when they hire a car at home or abroad. You can now apply for a driving licence online – the service is convenient, easy to use and available 24/7 and cost £14 Once The DVLA has received the driver’s application, the new licence should be back with them within 3 weeks.

The Best Performance Car For a New Driver Back in 2010, when I was a giddy young car enthusiast starting high school, I’d often pass by a small used-car dealership on my way there. It was always worth peeking through the gates for a quick gander, but to date the most interesting car I’d seen in stock was a burgundy Vauxhall Omega V6, which didn’t exactly tug at the heartstrings of a 10-year-old boy. One day though, out in the elements in the far corner of the dealership, there had been a new arrival - a 1994 Rover Mini in British Racing green. Pumped-up arches, a cream interior, it looked the business. But even from a distance, it was clear that this Mini was afflicted with a particularly bad case of tin worm, with a front A-panel that wouldn’t hold much hope against a prod with a screwdriver. But once tidied up the car looked very crisp, and a price of £3495 got my attention. Next to a similarly priced VW Polo or Toyota Yaris, the little green Mini was irresistible. Daydreams of blasting around Wales in a classic Mini on inline throttle bodies quickly ensued. ‘When I’m 17’, I thought. Unfortunately, I thought wrong. Prices of good, rust-free Minis sky-rocketed before my eyes - by the time I could get behind the wheel, I was looking at £8000 for a nice example. Far too much money as an entry into motoring, so instead I cut my teeth in something far less glamorous - a 2004 Fiat Punto with a caved-in roof. The Punto was a surprisingly joyous machine, and it’s only right to learn the ropes in something tatty and invaluable. It is, however, a shame that the values of most interesting, older cars have put them out of reach of younger motorists. Cars like the Mini are simple to work on, easy to modify and huge fun; it’s no wonder that so many have spent their early motoring years in one. My uncle tells stories of swapping parts with his friends on the roadside and learning basic car control in his Mini in the 90s. But even something like a Mk1 Ford Fiesta or an Alfasud are perfect for basic, effervescent, no-frills driving. 15 years ago both were readily affordable and ideal candidates for young enthusiasts, but neither are particularly attainable now. A clean Alfasud won’t give you much change out of £6000. But perhaps this is a good thing. An inexperienced driver in a car with no driver aids, modest grip levels and very little in the way of crash protection is a potentially dangerous recipe, so it could be a blessing that old cars are no longer an option. Besides, there are a number of cracking young-timers out there that the market hasn’t yet scooped away from the grasp of young drivers. The Suzuki Swift Sport, Renault Twingo GT and the R50 Mini Cooper all evoke the energetic, engaging spirit of the hatches of yesteryear but with more modern safety levels, and all can be had for well under £3000. My choice? The Fiat Panda 100HP. The 100HP retains all the practicalities of the standard Panda - it feels cheap yet rugged inside, with more interior space than a car of this size has a right - but gets a feisty 1.4-litre engine and a far more sporting chassis setup. The result is not what you’d call quick, but it’s certainly lively and entertaining to wring out. Admittedly, the ride is poor - but then so is an old Mini’s. What matters is that the Panda feels eager, its responses are transparent and it makes each journey interesting in the way that an old car does. And being a Fiat, parts are incredibly cheap - I recently bought a new lower suspension arm for £25. No, it doesn’t quite have the cool-factor of a Mk1 VW Golf, nor the absorbing driving experience of a Peugeot 205 GTi, but on balance, it caters for the modern young driver very nicely indeed.
