Editor’s Letter The UK used car market grew 5.1% in Q1 of 2022 with 1,774,351 cars changing hands according to the latest figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Some 1,774,351 transactions took place, with 86,596 additional cars changing hands compared with the same period in 2021, when car showrooms nationwide were closed due to pandemic-related lockdowns with only click and collect transactions allowed. UK new car registrations fell by -15.8% to 119,167 units in April despite showrooms being open for the entire month. Unlike the previous year which saw lockdown restrictions in place until 12th April, global supply chain shortages, of which semiconductors are the most notable and continue to constrain the delivery of new vehicles. April’s decline was driven primarily by a -33.3% decrease in large fleet registrations with manufacturers continuing to prioritise private consumers given robust demand, which helped this market segment see a modest increase of 4.8%. Battery electric vehicles registrations continued to grow with 12,899 of the latest zero emission cars joining UK roads – an increase of 40.9% on the same month last year – and taking 10.8% market share, up from 6.5% last year. While registrations of hybrids also rose by 18.3%, the number of new plug-in hybrid registrations decreased by a third (-32.8%). As a result, electrified vehicles comprised 27.9% of all new car registrations during April. On a positive note Close Brothers Motor Finance have raised £35,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Cancer Research UK through a series of fundraising events. Colleagues from across the South Yorkshire-based motor finance business took part in a range of fundraising initiatives, including the Three Peaks Challenge, a 100 mile walk, Race for Life, bike rides and bake sales. Close Brothers Motor Finance’s network of dealer partners also got involved in the charity initiatives, with the Partner Hubs leading the charge on many events. Sean Kemple, Managing Director at Close Brothers Motor Finance, said: “I am so impressed and proud of all those who took part in the charity initiatives and gave up their time to raise money and awareness for two extremely important charities”. As part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, Close Brothers Group also donated a tree for every colleague to the Queen’s Green Canopy Scheme. Not wearing sunglasses driving could cost you £5,000 and nine points Rule 237 of the Highway Code

rivers face a £5,000 fine and even a ban from the road if they are caught unaware by unexpected sunny spells. Glare from the sun can adversely affect a driver’s perception of the road ahead and short bursts of glare can dazzle their eyes. And failing to take preventative measures such as wearing sunglasses or lowering the sun visor could see motorists whacked with a hefty bill and nine penalty points on their licence. Andrew Jervis, co-founder of ClickMechanic, an online marketplace for car repairs, said: “Many of us will welcome a few days of sun, but it could spell disaster for unprepared motorists. “We all have a responsibility to drive with care and attention, and we need to be on alert for anything that can affect our ability to do that. Sun glare is often tricky to drive with as it can affect how we perceive the road conditions, while an unexpected short burst of light from behind a cloud can really harm our ability to see. “It can be worse when the roads are wet after a rainy spell, with sunlight reflecting off puddles and into our eyes. It’s important to be on guard for the adverse effects of sun glare while driving, whether this is through wearing sunglasses, removing any shiny objects from the dashboard or lowering the sun visors.” While there is no rule stating sunglasses must be worn by motorists during sunny spells, drivers could fall short of Rule 237 of the Highway Code, which states they must drive with due care and attention. It means the person behind the wheel has failed to meet the standard required of a competent driver and hasn’t shown due consideration for other road users. It can be dealt with at the roadside by way of a £100 fine and three points on your licence. However, more serious offences can result in between three and nine penalty points and a discretionary fine of up to £5,000 depending on the severity. It’s worse if the motorist has caused a fatal accident due to the lack of care, which can bring an unlimited fine, a driving ban or up to five years in prison.

Predicting who will buy which type of car has always been difficult for vehicle manufacturers, but nevertheless they do not make cars without knowing the target market and matching each model to specific demographic groups. There are naturally exceptions, but generally demographics play a huge part in how new models of cars are marketed. Large saloon and estate cars are usually aimed at families and are often driven by Dads. Stereotypes Work in the Car Industry The young male driver is likely to go for a car which is both sporty and cool but this will depend on how much money they or their parents have available and their restrictions on what they will permit their sons to drive given safety concerns. Daughters often choose cars that are smaller and easier to drive, with phone devices and music being a priority. Naturally these are broad generalisations and stereotyping people in terms of which cars they are likely to purchase by sex or age could easily attract criticism, yet this seems to work for the

Citroen DS3 The Citroen DS3 came onto the market in 2010 and since then has won many prestigious awards for its style and performance in the supermini range. French manufactured, this car was the primary model of the premium DS line. Citroen have long been renowned for their outstanding diesel and THP petrol engines both in terms of performance and running costs. The DS3 can be customised with a whole range of technology including an MP3/CD player, cruise control and LED running lights. However, the style options that are available with this car really make it a popular choice. There is a wide and diverse range of exteriors to choose from together with purchasers being able to select contrasting roof and wing mirror colours. Also available are alloy wheels and wheel caps. The DS3 sits in the more expensive end of the market but is hard to beat for style and performance.

Suzuki Swift An absolutely fantastic supermini, the Suzuki manufactured Swift will match perfectly with the image that most young male drivers want to create. Despite

being relatively compact it does have a magnificent sporty look and the latest models have more gadgetry than the previous range. Technology includes a USB port, Bluetooth and a CD player and the style is guaranteed to impress even the most discerning of peers. With very economic running costs and a variety of engine sizes to choose from, the Swift has great performance and has attained the Euro NCAP maximum 5 stars for safety due to its ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) which is standard across the range, anti-whiplash front seats and additional safety kit.

Ford Ka The Ford Ka has been in the marketplace for several years and is particularly popular with female drivers making it an ideal choice for a daughter’s first car. In a year that saw the first Mazda vehicles roll off the Hofu Plant No.1 production line, Mazda welcomed Victoria Park Mazda to its UK dealer network. Now marking its 40th Anniversary, the Welsh dealership has received a commemorative plaque to celebrate the significant milestone. Established as a Mazda dealership since 1982, Victoria Park Mazda is one of Mazda’s longest-serving dealerships across the UK and has built a reputation for delivering

first-class customer service in Cardiff. Currently located on Hadfield Road, Cardiff, the family-run business was named as the UK’s top Mazda dealership as ‘Dealer of the Year’ in 1989 and 1992, and has since further cemented its first-class customer service with the dealership’s five-star Feefo rating, as voted by real customers. Is Bugatti Going Backwards The new Bugatti Centodieci is not a pretty car. Fussy, squinty-eyed and overstyled, it’s a shame that elements of the now legendary EB110 have been rehashed into this brutish hunk of a vehicle. Next to the Centodieci, the Chiron is almost beautiful. The Veyron more so. But of the marques’ entire portfolio, it is perhaps the achingly gorgeous Type 57 Atalante Faux Cabriolet from 1935 that most begs the question; has Bugatti lost it? The Type 57 is a fantastically over-engineered machine. The 3.3l straighteight, featuring double-overhead-cams, produces a healthy 200bhp in supercharged form, making for effortless performance up to and over 100mph. More interesting, though, is the ingenious chassis design that put the T57 in a class of one in period. The front axle is articulated at the centre to give some degree of independence at each end, with dampers that are integral with the engine mounts to transmit road vibration to the block, rather than disturbing the serenity of the cabin. Extensive measures to stiffen the frame, such as an internally reinforced front cross-member, give that clever suspension the best base from which to work. What is clear is that in building the Type 57, Bugatti invested the might of its resources and prowess into building the very best road car possible. This was not just a grand-prix car adorned with number plates. The marque’s motorsport experience was utilised exactly where appropriate for an enjoyable street car, such as in a very rigid structure to deal with rough surfaces, while it looked to the Type 59 race car for an engine proven well beyond the demands of the public highway. Forgiving springs and state-ofthe-art de Ram dampers made for a dignified ride - this was very much a cosseting grand tourer. The Atalante Faux Cabriolet in particular was built on the lower Type 57S chassis, being a factory body-style of which just three were built. It combined a dramatic fixedhead silhouette with an impossibly pretty, sloping rear deck, and the excess of a vast grand tourer with a small, lavish, two-seater cockpit is, to me, very appealing. Bugatti’s famously brash grille is present and correct which, coupled with that two-tone body, must have been quite a sight during the 30s, when many still travelled on horseback. Perhaps it was vulgar back then, repulsive even, which brings me neatly back to the Centodieci. Could it be that Bugatti is ahead of the times? The new car is certainly exceedingly capable; a fastidiously engineered, 1578bhp powerhouse. In eighty-years time, perhaps the design will make sense, too, and we will find beauty in the stacked exhausts and it’s 14-piece rear light cluster. Somehow, I don’t think we will.
