WHAT IS AN ASBK-SPEC SUPERBIKE?

The Australian Superbike Championship Alpinestars Superbike class features bikes that are not only fast, spectacular and sound amazing but are also easily accessible to the general public as they are very similar to those available for purchase off the showroom floor.

Engine capacities and minimum weights for ASBK machines are capped at 1000cc and 168kg for four-cylinder machines, and 1300cc and 172kg for two- and three-cylinder configurations. That said, it’s worth noting that Matt Walters’ 1100cc Aprilia RSV4 has also been homologated for the Alpinestars Superbike class in 2023.

While engine modifications for race versions are limited, Yamaha Racing Team manager, John Redding, says the engine is not a primary focus for performance gains in the Superbike class.

“To get a performance improvement of 10 per cent over the standard output is about as much as you can expect,” Redding said. “You can increase the compression ratio, fine-tune the degrees on the valve seats and adjust the cam timing for different tracks, but that’s about it.

“One of the advantages of keeping the engines relatively standard is they are cheap to maintain and last a while between rebuilds.”

With the engine and gearbox both being close to standard, teams have turned to other aspects of Superbikes to improve their performance.

“Suspension has been a major area of development on the race-spec bikes,” Redding said. “The suspension on a street bike is compromised for ride comfort, but on a racetrack comfort isn’t a factor – it’s all about optimising the handling and the corner speeds that can be achieved.

“Compared to the street version of the bike, the race bike will have different shock absorbers and fork internals, providing a much more adjustable setup.”

In recent years, significant innovation has taken place in the electronic systems of race bikes. These systems have been adapted to provide

functions such as fuelling, traction control, engine braking and antiwheelie control.

There’s little doubt that the electronics sphere has provided both the biggest challenge – and opportunity – to teams and riders.

“Electronics are one of the most important areas of development and something that has become a critical factor in determining the speed that can be achieved by different bikes,” Redding said. “There are significant advantages to be gained in having the best electronic set-up.”

The brakes on racing bikes are also upgraded, with items such as the master cylinder, brake lines, pads and discs all being replaced with race-specific items.

“In a race situation, maximum stopping power is a priority, but brake wear is much less of a consideration than it would be on a road bike, because components can be changed after every session,” Redding said.

According to Redding, the bikes competing in the mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul, are more similar to road bikes than those in other Superbike championships globally.

“The permitted modifications are much more limited here in Australia, which has the advantage of containing costs,” Redding said.

At Phillip Island’s round one this year, the 2024 ASBK-spec bikes demonstrated their impressive speed when compared to the international classes. For instance, Harrison Voight’s new Phillip Island lap record is 1:30.790, which isn’t far behind the WorldSBK benchmark of 1:28.564.

Not bad for a lightly modified road bike!

PHILLIP ISLAND REVIEW/SYDNEY MOTORSPORT PARK PREVIEW

ALPINESTARS SUPERBIKE

Following round one of the 2024 mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) at Phillip Island in late February, the main question in the Alpinestars Superbike category is if anyone can interrupt the march of three-time champion Josh Waters and his McMartin Racing Ducati Panigale V4 R.

After just missing a fourth ASBK title last year after a season-long stouch with Troy Herfoss, Waters is doubly keen and fully fit to claim the honour.

Waters took away a perfect haul of points at Phillip Island as he claimed pole position and three race wins to continue his dominance of the Island – which now stands at eight wins in the last 11 starts.

It wasn’t all plain sailing at the opening round, though, as he was pushed hard in the three races by his teenage teammate Harrison Voight and reigning champion Herfoss, now on a DesmoSport Ducati.

While the trio ultimately battled for the race wins, it was just as intense behind as the likes of Yamaha Racing Team duo Cru Halliday and Mike Jones, Bryan Staring (MotoGo Yamaha) and Anthony West (Addicted to Track Yamaha) were involved in rolling scrums – the latter getting closer to the front at every turn of the wheel.

Waters may have won, but it was Voight who announced himself on the big stage in truly emphatic fashion. He’s not only second in the Alpinestars Superbike standings, but also set a new lap record around Phillip Island. At one stage during the weekend he held both the Superbike and Michelin Supersport lap records…

Heading to Sydney Motorsport Park (SMSP) for the ASBK Night Race on March 22-23, it’s the same scenario as 2023 with Waters on a three-race winning streak. In the first ever ASBK round under lights, then Waters claimed a lap record and took two race wins to continue a blemish-free start to the season.

But what will the 2024 round at SMSP bring? Voight and Martin both won races at the western Sydney venue during the recently completed St George Summer Night Series and, with no team orders, Voight is primed to stand on the top step of the podium at least once before he begins his European Moto2 campaign in Italy next month.

But don’t discount Herfoss, who’s on a high after a superb first-up performance in the King of the Baggers and Super Hooligans classes during his return to the American racing scene in Daytona.

No doubt he will use that experience to his advantage alongside teammate Broc Pearson as he aims to defend his title – notwithstanding his commitments in America.

Meanwhile, the mercurial Halliday will be a definite threat in Sydney, and the rejuvenated West – the

22

PHILLIP ISLAND GP CIRCUIT, VIC

reigning New Zealand Superbike champion – will be aiming to climb the podium.

Then there is three-time champion Glenn Allerton (GT Racing BMW), who is back to near full fitness after a massive crash at SMSP in February.

And don’t forget the two youngsters in the class on the Penrite Racing Yamahas: Max Stauffer and Cameron Dunker. They are best of mates, and both have proved to be very handy on a Superbike. It will be Max’s third year on the big-bore but for Dunker it will be his second meeting on the YZF-R1 after claiming last year’s Michelin Supersport Championship on the day he turned the spritely age of 16!

The two Alpinestars Superbike races under lights will have the crowd enthralled at every corner.

MICHELIN SUPERSPORT

The Michelin Supersport Championship has a new rising star on the scene in the shape of Jonathon “JJ” Nahlous – and if Phillip Island is any indication, he will be a household name soon.

After serving his apprenticeship in the bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup the Supersport 300 classes, “JJ” – as he prefers to be called – is now in his second year of Superport, and he began the season in a blaze of glory at Phillip Island on his Yamaha.

He claimed new qualifying and lap records and backed it up with three dominant victories, the smallest winning margin by 2.4 seconds over Tom Bramich (Yamaha) in race three.

Whether he can continue that stellar form under lights at SMSP will be another matter as the Michelin Supersport field is the strongest it has been for some time with a healthy combination of class experience and those graduating from the feeder classes.

One rider with plenty of experience is two-time Australian Supersport champion, Tom Toparis (Yamaha).

With his Stop & Seal-backed Superbike not ready, Tom will revert to a class he knows well.

Other contenders include Mark Chiodo and last year’s runner-up Olly Simpson (Yamaha).

Chiodo has “stepped down” to the Supersport category, and he is one of two riders on Honda riders alongside 2023 Supersport 300 champion Marcus Hamod.

And don’t forget Bramich. In 2023, he required a full knee reconstruction after a mid-year road accident, but he returned in fine form at Phillip Island. He qualified in second before a couple of frustrating mechanical glitches held him back.

RACE AND ROAD SUPERSPORT 300

The form guide for the Race and Road Supersport 300 category at SMSP is wide open, so picking a winner is anyone’s guess.

While there was a Czech ‘interloper’ at the first round – Petr Svoboda – who won two of the three races, he certainly got the hurry up from the local stars, including ex-OJC and FIM MiniGP champion Harrison Watts who has found a new life with a Kawasaki. Another Kawasaki rider who impressed at the Island was Joshua Newman. Newman will be at his home track at SMSP,

23

LAST TIME OUTCONT.

and he has improved since last year so he will be knocking on the door of his first win in the class. Unfortunately, one rising star will be sadly missing is Tara Morrison (Kawasaki), the daughter of ex-stunt rider Allan Morrison. She crashed in last weekend’s combined Victoria-SA Championships at The Bend and broke a collarbone, which is a bitter pill to swallow after she claimed her first podium in the ASBK class at Phillip Island.

BLU CRU OCEANIA JUNIOR CUP

The opening round of the bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup will be held at SMSP, with the FIM Oceania and Dorna Sports-supported academy continuing to provide a clear pathway for riders to progress to international categories such as the Asia Talent Cup and Red Bull

MotoGP Rookies Cup.

And in 2024, history will be made when Jacob Roulstone, who was an OJC competitor in 2019, becomes a world championship grand prix rider in the Moto3 class. And in more exciting news, the OJC now has Australian championship status as well.

With the little kids with big dreams strutting their talents alongside the best riders in Australia, there will be 120 debutantes in 2024 joining the nine incumbents from 2022.

SUPERBIKE MASTERS

The big historic beasts return in 2024 across three rounds of the ASBK Championship, starting at SMSP.

Pop out to the paddock to drool at the extremely impressive level of preparation and presentation of the machines. And admire how hard they are ridden by people who have motorcycle racing history coursing through their bodies 24/7.

Among the 26-strong entry list is Garry McCoy on a Yamaha TZ750, Alex Phillis on a Suzuki XR69, defending Superbike Masters champion Keo Watson on a Yamaha FZR1000, and Ryan Taylor on a Suzuki Katana.

BLU CRU OCEANIA JUNIOR CUP

BLU CRU OCEANIA JUNIOR CUP

Since its inception in 2019, the FIM Oceania and Dorna Sports-supported bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup (OJC) has provided a nurturing environment for young riders to experience road racing at a national level, learn, improve, and showcase their talents.

The OJC has become a firmly established stepping-stone to the international racing arena and is recognised as a Road to MotoGP category. The most outstanding OJC riders have a clear pathway to progress to other international categories such as the Asia Talent Cup and Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup.

Even though it is only in its fifth season, OJC has already earned a formidable reputation as a breeding ground for future stars. And in 2024, history will be made when Jacob Roulstone, who was an OJC competitor in 2019, becomes a world championship grand prix rider in the Moto3 class. And in more exciting news, the OJC will be formally recognised in 2024 with Australian championship status, which is a nod to its powerful status as a major junior pathways program.

The 2023 OJC season has seen 11 riders debuting, joining the nine incumbents from 2022. Furthermore, OJC graduates and current riders have also competed internationally in 2023.

The OJC formula is simple but effective: competitors aged from 11 up to under 16 (as of January 1, 2023) compete against each other on identical Yamaha YZF-R15 raceprepped motorcycles, equipped with control Dunlop tyres, Öhlins suspension, Yamalube and DID chains.

AUSTRALIAN SUPERBIKE MASTERS

The popular Superbike Masters returns for another year in the ASBK bunker, harking back to the days when big-bore racing attracted large crowds to watch machinery similar to what they rode to the track. Sometimes, the riders also rode their race machines to the track!

The memories simply come flooding back, to an era when the likes of Malcolm Campbell, Aaron Slight, Mat Mladin, Shawn Giles, the late Anthony Gobert and ASBK

ambassadors Troy Corser and Steve Martin won the Aussie Superbike title on machines that will be competing across the three rounds of the 2024 Superbike Masters.

The category caters to a range of motorcycles from the bygone era. The P5 ‘Unlimited Forgotten Era’ class features bikes produced between 1973 and 1982 and is split into two subclasses: P5 Unlimited and P5F1 for aftermarketframed bikes -- including the Harris and Spondon – and the GP-spec Yamaha TZ750 two-strokes.

Five-time grand prix winner Garry McCoy will compete on a TZ750 at Sydney Motorsport Park on March 22-23 – just one of many former champions of the sport expected to make a cameo in the 2024 Superbike Masters.

Meanwhile, the P6 ‘New Era’ class welcomes machines from 1983 to 1990, with Formula 750 bikes such as the iconic Honda RC30 – the machine Campbell rode to ASBK Superbike success in 1989 and 1990. The P6 Formula 1300 class features motorcycles such as the Yamaha FZR1000 and the Honda CB1100R.

With a classy field of competitors, the Superbike Masters is sure to provide intense and entertaining battles among riders and their immaculately prepared classic machines.
