WHAT IS AN ASBK-SPEC SUPERBIKE? The Australian Superbike Championship Alpinestars Superbike class features bikes that are not only fast, spectacular and sound amazing but are also easily accessible to the general public as they are very similar to those available for purchase off the showroom floor. Engine capacities and minimum weights for ASBK machines are capped at 1000cc and 168kg for four-cylinder machines, and 1300cc and 172kg for two- and three-cylinder configurations. That said, it’s worth noting that Matt Walters’ 1100cc Aprilia RSV4 has also been homologated for the Alpinestars Superbike class in 2023. While engine modifications for race versions are limited, Yamaha Racing Team manager, John Redding, says the engine is not a primary focus for performance gains in the Superbike class.

There’s little doubt that the electronics sphere has provided both the biggest challenge – and opportunity – to teams and riders. “Electronics are one of the most important areas of development and something that has become a critical factor in determining the speed that can be achieved by different bikes,” Redding said. “There are significant advantages to be gained in having the best electronic set-up.” The brakes on racing bikes are also upgraded, with items such as the master cylinder, brake lines, pads and discs all being replaced with

“To get a performance improvement of 10 per cent over the standard output is about as much as you can expect,” Redding said. “You can increase the compression ratio, fine-tune the degrees on the valve seats and adjust the cam timing for different tracks, but that’s about it. “One of the advantages of keeping the engines relatively standard is they are cheap to maintain and last a while between rebuilds.” With the engine and gearbox both being close to standard, teams have turned to other aspects of Superbikes to improve their performance.

According to Redding, the bikes competing in the mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul, are more similar to road bikes than those in other Superbike championships globally. “The permitted modifications are much more limited here in Australia, which has the advantage of containing costs,” Redding said. “Suspension has been a major area of development on the race-spec bikes,” Redding said. “The suspension on a street bike is compromised for ride comfort, but on a racetrack comfort isn’t a factor – it’s all about optimising the handling and the corner speeds that can be achieved. “Compared to the street version of the bike, the race bike will have different shock absorbers and fork internals, providing a much more adjustable setup.”

At Phillip Island, the 2023 ASBK-spec bikes demonstrate their impressive speed when compared to international classes. For instance, Josh Waters’ Phillip Island lap record is 1:31.075, which is only a whisker behind the WorldSBK benchmark of 1:30.075. Not bad for a lightly modified road bike!

LAST TIME OUT Round Six - Phillip Island GP Circuit, VIC ALPINESTARS SUPERBIKE The final round of this year’s mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul, at The Bend (SA) is a salivating scenario every race fan dreams about as Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda) and Josh Waters (McMartin Racing with K-Tech Ducati) go head-to-head and toe-to-toe in the premier Alpinestars Superbike class. It’s now all square, gentleman. Touch gloves, fight fair, no hitting below the belt and may the best man win. Lights out: it’s game on as for the first time in ASBK history we will be heading into the final round with the leading two protagonists locked on equal points.*

Tight, no matter which way you look at it…. In the second last round at Phillip Island, it was a simmering steamboat of action as the weekend unfolded with unexpected outcomes for some and vindication for others. Herfoss held a 14-point lead over Waters, with defending champion, Mike Jones (Yamaha Racing Team) in third position, 46 points off Waters but only six in front of Glenn Allerton (GT Racing BMW). Jones’ teammate, Cru Halliday, was a further 19 points adrift in fifth. In race one, defending champion Jones was in an epic duel with Waters and Halliday before he crashed out of the lead with three laps to go.

We’ve had six courses of the ASBK smorgasbord this year, starting with the opening round at Phillip Island where Waters claimed pole position, dominated the three races and broke his own lap record. What an appetiser. Now after five very different, yet delicious main courses we are faced with a scrumptious dessert – and what a tasty treat we have in store. Like a Bombe Alaska with flames aplenty! Herfoss and Waters have two very different riding styles and approaches to competition, which guarantees that neither will leave any doubts as to how hungry they are as Waters aims for his fourth title and Herfoss his third. With Herfoss and Waters on equal points, their stats are similar with Waters taking seven wins to Herfoss’ six. Herfoss has finished second three times to once for Waters, and both have finished third on one occasion. Herfoss has missed the podium four times – all at Phillip Island – to Waters’ five misses. Waters’ worst result is ninth (Morgan Park) to Herfoss’ seventh at Phillip Island.

Halliday and Waters went hard at it to the wire, but it was the former who won his first Alpinestars Superbike race in eight years, with the impressive Max Stauffer (GTR MotoStars Racing Yamaha) breaking through for his first podium in the premier class. Allerton came through from a lowly eighth on the grid for fourth, while Herfoss was seventh – his first non-podium finish since race three at the opening round back in February. The title leader wasn’t happy but still philosophical as his lead shrunk to eight points over Waters, while Allerton moved into third ahead of Jones. Additionally, with Halliday’s victory he was now on equal points with his team-mate heading into race two. How quickly things change. Race two saw Waters push through the ongoing pain of his injured right arm, shoulder and wrist as he defeated Halliday and Jones in another titanic duel, the trio separated by 0.584 seconds in a typical Phillip Island drag to the finish line. Herfoss did a little better but missed the podium again in fourth over three seconds off the leaders, while Stauffer again impressed in fifth.

PHILLIP ISLAND GP CIRCUIT, VIC Allerton was eighth, but remains third in the championship with Halliday and Jones within striking distance. At the Bend last year, it was an up and down weekend for this year’s championship contenders. Herfoss won the opening race and crashed out of the second leg, as did Allerton, although the latter remounted to finish 14th. Meanwhile, Waters was riding shotgun for his teammate Wayne Maxwell, who was fighting to claim three titles in a row and his fourth Aussie title. Waters finished fourth in the opening race, but the second race lasted until the first turn when he was taken out by visiting German Marcel Schroetter. Jones wrapped up the title chase over Maxwell in race one by finishing a steady sixth place and, with the pressure lifted off his shoulders, he celebrated his championship in style by victory in the last race of the year. There are a few side dishes at The Bend to accompany the main course that are very appetising.

MICHELIN SUPERSPORT If it hadn’t already been one of the most tightly contested championships in recent years between Olly Simpson, Cameron Dunker and Ty Lynch, there’s been a tonne more spice poured into the final round courtesy of some Aussies returning from overseas duties to have a final fling for the year and bolster the already healthy ranks. Leading the ‘invasion’ is Harrison Voight, who competed in the Moto2 European championship this year. Joining him will be Archie McDonald, Harry Khouri, Jack Mahaffy and Taiyo Aksu. Voight rode at The Bend last year, took pole position and backed it up with two emphatic wins with a combined winning gap of over 10 seconds. He was then a towering presence again at this year’s opening Supersport round with another clean sweep.

An enthralling battle for sixth to 10th is one, with Bryan Staring (MotoGo Yamaha) three points in front of his 2022 teammate, Broc Pearson (DesmoSport Ducati), in the duel for sixth and seventh. There’s an extra carrot for Staring as he would like nothing better than to finish in front of the team he claimed third with last year before being let go in preference to the younger Pearson. In eighth spot is Ted Collins on the Livson Racing BMW, with Arthur Sissis (Unitech Racing Yamaha) and Stauffer fighting it out for the last two position in the top 10. Collins has been Mr Steady, going about his business getting faster and closer to the front at every outing and this weekend should continue the up curve. It is Sissis’ home track, and now that he has recovered from injury he is sure to be at the pointy end in the opening laps of each race with his trademark lightning starts, while young Stauffer is letting the elder statesmen of the class know the young ones are on their way up. We may not have the privilege of the attendance of Jack Miller in 2023, but take a seat and prepare for a motorcycle dining experience that will leave a very satisfying after-taste for years to come. *We had a tied championship in 2005, with Josh Brookes winning on a countback from Shawn Giles after winning the last race of the season.

Also expected to line up is Tom Toparis, who competed in the recent Phillip Island round and won the opening race by nearly three seconds before breaking his left wrist in a highspeed crash in the second. Since then, he has been a regular inside a hyperbaric chamber on the Gold Coast aiming to get fit. In the title battle, 15-year-old Dunker from Kurri Kurri (NSW) is poised to be the youngest ever Australian Supersport champion. He holds a 14-point buffer over Adelaide native, Simpson. Simpson was leading the Yamaha-dominated title until being forced to retire from the second race at Philip Island after cooking his clutch at the start, surrendering the lead to Dunker. Simpson is just two points ahead of fellow South Australian, Ty Lynch, who led the season early but is still right in the title hunt.

LAST TIME OUT CONT. The intrigue doesn’t finish with the top three, as Dallas Skeer and Jack Passfield are locked on equal points in fourth, just three points ahead of Scott Nicholson. Dunker, along with four other Aussies, competed in the final of the FIM MiniGP World Series at Valencia from November 21-23. Dunker finished 11th overall in the 190cc class and no doubt learned a massive amount in such a hotbed of competition. Moreover, Dunker won the Supersport 300 and Yamaha R3 Cup last year so is fully aware of the pressure associated with winning titles. For his main rival Simpson, the callousness of a mechanical hit him at the worst time at Phillip Island and now he’s on the back foot. However, The Bend is his local track so the knowledge he possesses and the years of experience he has under his belt will no doubt come in handy as he aims for his first middleweight title.

heartbreaking margins. It won’t be the same at The Bend, as the finish line is a lot closer to the final corner to negate the effects of slipstreaming. It’s all on corner speed and picking up the throttle sooner on exit that play the more pivotal roles. In Phillip Island’s Gawith-won race three, just 0.744 seconds covered the top seven finishers. With a long straight and technical infield, expect more of the same at The Bend – and don’t be surprised if local riders Jordy Simpson, Sam Pezzetta, Ryder Gilbert and Tara Morrison step up to throw a few unexpected haymakers! YAMAHA FINANCE R3 CUP The final round of the Yamaha Finance R3 Cup will be a mirror image of the Supersport 300 class – more fierce rolling scrums right throughout the field!

How will it all pan out? With a handy buffer Dunker can afford to let Simpson and Lynch finish in front of him, but conversely with so many wildcards in the mix they could also have a massive say in proceedings. SUPERSPORT 300 The Supersport 300 title is tighter at the top than it has been all year with just two points covering the top three: the leader, Henry Snell, from Cameron Swain and Marcus Hamod. But it’s still a packed leaderboard, with Brandon Demmery only three points off the trio in fourth place, with Bodie Gawith also still in the hunt.

Swain leads the standings he aims to replicate Dunker’s feat from last year and take out both titles – but he will have his work cut out will have to be right on his game to execute each race to perfection. Swain has a slender four-point lead over Gawith, who is a solitary point in front of teammate Snell, with Demmery sitting in fourth spot 10 points off Swain. At the last round the wins were split between Swain, Gawith and Snell.

Snell took over the championship lead at Phillip Island after two wins and a second to win the round while Swain stumbled, literally, crashing in race one before recovering to score a third and fourth. In those two races he was leading coming out of turn 10 but lost out on the drag to the line by

In race two, Swain was in the wrong spot at the wrong time and was hit by another rider which forced him off at turn two. He then had to fight his way back from last place to finish 13th spot – but the points gap had closed appreciably, setting up yet another thrilling finale.

LAST TIME OUT CONT. BLU CRU OCEANIA JUNIOR CUP The bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup is also on a knife-edge with three riders poised to take out the Cup. Mt Barker local, Archie Schmidt, who holds a one point lead over Bodie Paige, with New Zealander Hayden Fordyce – who led the series after the first round – coming back to the fore at the right time to be 10 points off Schmidt.

The pit bays have been a magnet for crowds to gander and drool at the bikes from an age that many consider represent the golden age of Australian road racing. Riley Nauta, who sits on fourth overall, shared wins with Schmidt and Fordyce at Phillip Island. Keep an eye on young dynamo Ella McCausland. She has a wealth of talent and at Phillip Island was right up with the leading bunch and even took a turn at the front, but crashes let her down.

SUREFLIGHT SUPERBIKE MASTERS Since its inception last year as a part-time guest at various rounds of the ASBK the Sureflight Superbike Masters has proven to be a real crowd pleaser – and with four races this weekend there is another opportunity to see them out on track. There are five different classes in the field to cater for the

One blast from the past making a cameo appearance this weekend is three-time MotoGP race winner Garry McCoy on the same TZ750 that Troy Corser threw a leg over at Sydney Motorsport Park back in March! Will he revert to his “Mr Squiggle’ completely sideways style? Maybe just a little at the final turn! Joining him will be Isle of Man Classic TT winner David Johnson on the Carl Cox-owned Katana. Johnson won all three races at The Bend last year.

And don’t be fooled by the name: these competitors aren’t just racing each other; they’re also cross-entered into the Supersport 300, where they’ll face off against other manufacturers like Kawasaki and KTM. But the R3 Cup is where the real action is. With three races per weekend, these mostly teenage riders get plenty of track time to hone their skills and test their race fitness. Of course, with all that racing comes some serious competition. Every rider needs to be consistent if they want to succeed, and one slip-up can spell disaster. But with such tight racing, you can always count on a nail-biting finish. In fact, it’s rare to see a race decided before the final turn of the final lap. It all comes down to that lastlap slipstreaming drag to the finish line – may the best rider win!

BLU JUNIORCUP CUP BLUCRU CRUOCEANIA OCEANIA JUNIOR Since its inception in 2019, the FIM Oceania and Dorna Sports-supported bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup (OJC) has provided a nurturing environment for young riders to experience road racing at a national level, learn, improve, and showcase their talents. The OJC has become a firmly established stepping-stone to the international racing arena and is recognised as a Road to MotoGP category. The most outstanding OJC riders have a clear pathway to progress to other international categories such as the Asia Talent Cup and Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup. Even though it is only in its fifth season, OJC has already earned a formidable reputation as a breeding ground for future stars. And in 2024, history will be made when Jacob Roulstone, who was an OJC competitor in 2019, becomes a world championship grand prix rider in the Moto3 class. And in more exciting news, the OJC will be formally recognised in 2024 with Australian championship status, which is a nod to its powerful status as a major junior pathways program. The 2023 OJC season has seen 11 riders debuting, joining the nine incumbents from 2022. Furthermore, OJC graduates and current riders have also competed internationally in 2023.

The OJC formula is simple but effective: competitors aged from 11 up to under 16 (as of January 1, 2023) compete against each other on identical Yamaha YZF-R15 raceprepped motorcycles, equipped with control Dunlop tyres, Öhlins suspension, Yamalube and DID chains.
