WHAT IS AN ASBK-SPEC SUPERBIKE? The Australian Superbike Championship Alpinestars Superbike class features bikes that are not only fast, spectacular and sound amazing but are also easily accessible to the general public as they are very similar to those available for purchase off the showroom floor. Engine capacities and minimum weights for ASBK machines are capped at 1000cc and 168kg for four-cylinder machines, and 1300cc and 172kg for two- and three-cylinder configurations. That said, it’s worth noting that Matt Walters’ 1100cc Aprilia RSV4 has also been homologated for the Alpinestars Superbike class in 2023. While engine modifications for race versions are limited, Yamaha Racing Team manager, John Redding, says the engine is not a primary focus for performance gains in the Superbike class.
functions such as fuelling, traction control, engine braking and antiwheelie control. There’s little doubt that the electronics sphere has provided both the biggest challenge – and opportunity – to teams and riders. “Electronics are one of the most important areas of development and something that has become a critical factor in determining the speed that can be achieved by different bikes,” Redding said. “There are significant advantages to be gained in having the best electronic set-up.” The brakes on racing bikes are also upgraded, with items such as the master cylinder, brake lines, pads and discs all being replaced with
“To get a performance improvement of 10 per cent over the standard output is about as much as you can expect,” Redding said. “You can increase the compression ratio, fine-tune the degrees on the valve seats and adjust the cam timing for different tracks, but that’s about it. “One of the advantages of keeping the engines relatively standard is they are cheap to maintain and last a while between rebuilds.” With the engine and gearbox both being close to standard, teams have turned to other aspects of Superbikes to improve their performance.
race-specific items. “In a race situation, maximum stopping power is a priority, but brake wear is much less of a consideration than it would be on a road bike, because components can be changed after every session,” Redding said. According to Redding, the bikes competing in the mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul, are more similar to road bikes than those in other Superbike championships globally. “The permitted modifications are much more limited here in Australia, which has the advantage of containing costs,” Redding said. “Suspension has been a major area of development on the race-spec bikes,” Redding said. “The suspension on a street bike is compromised for ride comfort, but on a racetrack comfort isn’t a factor – it’s all about optimising the handling and the corner speeds that can be achieved. “Compared to the street version of the bike, the race bike will have different shock absorbers and fork internals, providing a much more adjustable setup.”
At Phillip Island, the 2023 ASBK-spec bikes demonstrate their impressive speed when compared to international classes. For instance, Josh Waters’ Phillip Island lap record is 1:31.075, which is only a whisker behind the WorldSBK benchmark of 1:30.075. Not bad for a lightly modified road bike!
In recent years, significant innovation has taken place in the electronic systems of race bikes. These systems have been adapted to provide

LAST TIME OUT Round Five - Morgan Park Raceway, Qld ALPINESTARS SUPERBIKE After a mid-season hiatus of three months, the 2023 mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul, makes a welcome return to the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit this weekend – and what an event it promises to be with only two rounds remaining to determine this year’s champions. Full focus will again be on the premier Alpinestars Superbike class, in what has already been an enthralling season that has recently seen the ascendency swing from Josh Waters (McMartin Racing with K-Tech Ducati V4R) to Troy Herfoss on the Penrite Honda.
Defending champion Mike Jones (Yamaha Racing YZFR1M) is in third position, but 60 points off the lead. “Mad Mike” may still have a mathematical chance of retaining the title, but he is only six points in front of another three-time champion in Glenn Allerton (GT Racing BMW M 1000 RR), who is equally keen to take over that spot as Jones is to defend it. In round five at Morgan Park, Herfoss and defending champion Mike Jones (Yamaha Racing Team R1M) blew the large crowd away with the intensity of their see-sawing battle for the lead in both races. The first race went in Troy’s favour by 0.097sec, and the second by 0.796 sec in the enthralling encounters. Allerton was third in both races, while it was a tough round for Waters who could only manage uncharacteristic ninth and fifth placings – an off-track excursion in race one the main reason for the lowly finish. A small fracture of his humerus also caused some discomfort for Waters – but it was nothing compared to what happened at the Suzuka 8-Hour world endurance race two weeks later when he was cannoned into by a French rider during practice, which fractured and dislocated his right wrist and shoulder as well as re-fracturing his humerus.
The three-month break in the calendar couldn’t have come at a better time for Waters, but the period of recuperation didn’t allow him to take part in last month’s Victorian road racing title round at Phillip Island where a multitude of ASBK regulars from across all classes competed. This weekend he will be return to the track where Waters’ winning streak is now eight races, dating back to the 2022 MotoGP support races. While Herfoss, Waters, Jones and Allerton will be fighting for the championship, there are a number of sub-plots add even more spice to the round six proceedings.
Waters was utterly dominant in the opening two rounds at Phillip Island and Sydney Motorsport Park, taking clean sweeps and breaking lap records at both venues. However, since the third round at Queensland Raceway the pendulum has swung in favour of the Honda rider, with Troy winning six of the last seven races and finishing second in the other to turn a 35-point deficit into a 14-point lead over three-time champion, Waters.
22
The Victorian title round is a case-in-point. Max Stauffer (GTR MotoStars YZF-R1M) was right in the mix, finishing second and third in a couple of the races, while fellow Yamaha riders Anthony West (Addicted to Track), Bryan Staring (MotoGo) and Arthur Sissis (Unitech Racing) gave it a good crack, too. West was forced to withdraw after a gearbox issue, while Arthur had a big get off out of T11 and was forced out as well. Meanwhile, there are a couple of wildcard entries returning from the British racing scene. Multiple Australian Supersport champion, Tom Toparis, is the
MORGAN PARK RACEWAY, QLD main protagonist. He finished third in the British Supersport Championship, and is entered to ride a Stop & Seal Yamaha in his ASBK Superbike debut. He is also doubling up to contest the Supersport races as well.
Early season points leader Ty Lynch (Unitech YZF-R6) is just four points adrift from Dunker in third spot, and he’s returning to a happy hunting ground after winning the opening round at Phillip island in late February.
Also back from the UK is Jacob Hatch, who finished ninth in the British Junior Superstock Championship. He will partner West in the Addicted to Track Superbike team.
As for defending champion John Lytras (Caboolture Yamaha YZF-R6), it has been a challenging year but in the previous round at Morgan Park the diminutive Queenslander produced a 3-2 scorecard on his home track. He’s now 25 points behind Lynch in fourth.
The Alpinestars Superbike category will have three unofficial practice sessions on Friday followed by timed practice and qualifying on Saturday and two 12-lap races on Sunday. MICHELIN SUPERSPORT In 2023, the Michelin Supersport Championship has boasted the largest number of entries in a number of years and the on-track intensity has reflected how much the level has lifted.
The fly in the ointment could be Toparis. After a couple of years away from competition to have his right arm extended – by 27mm! – he’s had a stellar year in the UK and is raring to go without championship considerations to worry about. Another South Aussie, Dallas Skeer (YZF-R6), is sure to be among the pace setters. Others to watch out for are local Scott Nicholson (Traction Control Motorsport YZF-R6) and another class debutant, Hayden Nelson (Cube Racing YZF-R6), who recently gave Dunker a run for his money at the Victorian title round. Unfortunately for multiple Aussie champ Tom Bramich (Apex Group YZF-R60, who is sixth in the points, he will be watching from the sidelines after recently undergoing knee surgery. SUPERSPORT 300 The Supersport 300 class will, as usual, produce three crackerjack races with a 99 per cent chance that all races will be decided by less than a second and the winner won’t be known until the final few metres of the race. It’s very rare there is a runaway winner, and the flowing nature of Phillip Island accentuates that so strap in for some enthralling action. Brandon Demmery (Yamaha YZF-R3), who will run under the race RaceDNA banner for the rest of the year, leads Cameron Swain (Caboolture Yamaha YZF-R3) by just two points with Marcus Hamod (Motocity YZF-R3) a further nine points behind in third.
Heading into the penultimate round, South Australian Oli Simpson (Simpson Crash Yamaha YZF-R6) has a 13-point lead over wunderkind, 15-year-old Cameron Dunker from Kurri Kurri in the NSW Hunter Valley. In only his second meeting on the GTR MotoStars YZF-R6, at Sydney Motorsport Park, Dunker created history by becoming the youngest race winner in the 30-year history of the class. He backed that up with another win and pole position at Queensland Raceway and added another victory at Morgan Park in July.
23
LAST TIME OUT CONT. Swain was peerless at the last round, taking pole position and three from three. And after his recent ‘school’ excursion to Europe which saw him finish on the podium during an R3 Cup cameo, he will take a vast load of confidence out of that learning into the round.
Supersport 300 Championship, you are in for a triple treat with the three races in each class. Make sure you watch one race – at least – while wandering around.
Demmery has been extremely consistent, finishing in the top three at the past three rounds, while Hamod has also freshly returned from an R3 excursion in Europe. He broke through for his first wins at Queensland Raceway and is keen to add to his tally.
After last weekend’s Phillip Island MotoGP where the bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup was the support class, the youngsters who range in age from 11-15 years old will be well primed to continue their on-track antics. The GP crowd was enthralled with the talents of these rising stars.
BLU CRU OCEANIA JUNIOR CUP
YAMAHA FINANCE R3 CUP The two leading protagonists in the Australian Supersport 300 Championship – Brandon Demmery and Cameron Swain - also are on top of the Yamaha Finance R3 Cup but the positions are reversed as Swain leads Demmery by 10 points with Brodie Gawith seven points away in third.
As we head into the penultimate round, Bodie Paige has a handy 20-point lead over Archie Schmidt, while the battle for third place heading has 10 points covering Haydn Fordyce from John Pelgrave. And there’s plenty more just behind ready to pounce. Reflecting the competition at the previous round, there were three different winners with Marcus Hamod, Gawith and Henry Snell sharing the spoils; Snell with a win and a pair of third places was the overall winner as Swain maintained his consistent year with a hat-trick of runner-up places. Extremely tight finishes are a theme at every round. It’s absolutely mental racing, with riders often relegated from first to 10th in one corner and visa-versa at the next. It’s a case of blink and you’ll miss it. Plus, it’s the same scenario from the front of the field to the back with pockets of high-speed resistance and daring at every turn of the wheel as the teenagers learn their craft. It’s extremely rare that a race is decided by more than a second and there is no reason why that should change this weekend. If you have never witnessed the antics of the Yamaha Finance R3 Cup and its sibling, the Australian
24
Last weekend, Schmidt took the weekend with a win and a second gaining great momentum for this weekend’s three races. Pelgrave and Paige finished on equal points for second with Pelgrave getting the nod for second overall on a countback after he broke through for his first win in the class in the second race. Proving what a level playing field the OJC is, Ella McCausland is a shining light and has been right in the thick of racing at the front– last weekend battling for the win in both races and securing a season-best fourth place in race two. The OJC is the nursery of the future and, like junior programs in the past, has produced riders that are now on the world stage. In the vein of all sports that if you start ‘em young, the world is your oyster. Many of these kids will find pearls instead of oysters.

LAST TIME OUT CONT. SUREFLIGHT SUPERBIKE MASTERS The popular Sureflight Superbike Masters will also make a welcome return to the fold for the first time since round two at Sydney Motorsport Park. And the response from the classic racing community has been emphatic, with a total of 42 riders making the Island pilgrimage to compete across the four Period 5 (bikes manufactured between 1973 and 1982) and Period 6 (1983-1990) classes.
In addition, the on-track action – three five-lap races – will be supported by a massive static display of road racing machines that were stalwarts of local and international competition from the 1970s through to the 1990s. And some of the exotica will even hit the racetrack for parade laps on Saturday and Sunday, under the reins of riders like multiple Aussie Superbike champion Malcolm Campbell and his fellow Tasmanian road racing star, Scott Stephens.
26
Brad Phelan (Katana, P5 Unlimited), Troy Corser (TZ750, P5 F1), Robert Young (Ducati 888 P6 Formula 750) and Keo Watson (Yamaha FZR1000, P6 Formula 1300) lead the respective Superbike Masters classes, with the latter also holding a tight grip on the overall standings after his clean sweep at Sydney Motorsport Park. The level of intensity will then ratchet up at Phillip Island, with South Aussie international David Johnson (Suzuki Katana), Scott Campbell (RC30), Denis Ackland (Z1000), the evergreen Albert Tehennepe (Kawaski Harris) and Ryan Taylor (GSX-R1100) among the new additions from the round two protagonists.

YAMAHA FINANCE R3 CUP The Yamaha R3 Cup is all about the little 320cc R3 machines – they may be small, but they’re mighty! And don’t be fooled by the name: these competitors aren’t just racing each other; they’re also cross-entered into the Supersport 300, where they’ll face off against other manufacturers like Kawasaki and KTM. But the R3 Cup is where the real action is. With three races per weekend, these mostly teenage riders get plenty of track time to hone their skills and test their race fitness. Of course, with all that racing comes some serious competition. Every rider needs to be consistent if they want to succeed, and one slip-up can spell disaster. But with such tight racing, you can always count on a nail-biting finish. In fact, it’s rare to see a race decided before the final turn of the final lap. It all comes down to that lastlap slipstreaming drag to the finish line – may the best rider win!

BLU JUNIORCUP CUP BLUCRU CRUOCEANIA OCEANIA JUNIOR Since its inception in 2019, the FIM Oceania and Dorna Sports-supported bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup (OJC) has provided a nurturing environment for young riders to experience road racing at a national level, learn, improve, and showcase their talents. The OJC has become a firmly established stepping-stone to the international racing arena and is recognised as a Road to MotoGP category. The most outstanding OJC riders have a clear pathway to progress to other international categories such as the Asia Talent Cup and Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup. Even though it is only in its fifth season, OJC has already earned a formidable reputation as a breeding ground for future stars. And in 2024, history will be made when Jacob Roulstone, who was an OJC competitor in 2019, becomes a world championship grand prix rider in the Moto3 class. And in more exciting news, the OJC will be formally recognised in 2024 with Australian championship status, which is a nod to its powerful status as a major junior pathways program. The 2023 OJC season has seen 11 riders debuting, joining the nine incumbents from 2022. Furthermore, OJC graduates and current riders have also competed internationally in 2023.
48
The OJC formula is simple but effective: competitors aged from 11 up to under 16 (as of January 1, 2023) compete against each other on identical Yamaha YZF-R15 raceprepped motorcycles, equipped with control Dunlop tyres, Öhlins suspension, Yamalube and DID chains.
Join the e-MTB revolution on Yamaha’s all-new
Multi-mode lightweight PW-X3 motor with 85Nm of torque

SUREFLIGHT SUPERBIKE MASTERS By ASBK Trackside Commentator Mark Bracks
For the sixth round of season 2023 of the mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championships presented by Motul, the popular “Superbike Masters“ returns for another hit out.
the track. The first Australian Superbike Championship took place in 1987, and since then, the list of champions includes names such as Robbie Phillis, Troy Corser, Shawn Giles, and Anthony Gobert. The Superbike Masters category offers a full field of 40 bikes across four classes, catering to a range of motorcycles from the bygone era. The P5 ‘Unlimited Forgotten Era’ class features bikes produced between 1973 and 1982 and is split into two subclasses: P5 Unlimited and P5F1 for aftermarket framed bikes, including the Harris, Spondon, and the GPspec Yamaha TZ750 two-strokes. The P6 ‘New Era’ class welcomes machines from 1983 to 1990, with Formula 750 bikes such as the Honda RC30 and P6 Formula 1300 - featuring motorcycles such as the Yamaha FZR1000 and the aforementioned CB1100R.
The “Superbike Masters” category takes us back to the days when big-bore racing attracted large crowds to the tracks to watch races with machinery similar to what they rode to
With a full field of competitors, the Superbike Masters is sure to provide intense and entertaining battles among riders and their classic machines.

The team will continue to fulfil the critical role as the Official Medical Team for the 2022 mi-bike Australian Superbike Championships, presented by Motul. The 2021 RACESAFE season was full of thrills and spills which kept the RACESAFE Medical Team busy at every event. Emergency Medical & Sports Medicine treatments were provided to competitors, with the RACESAFE Medical Team again spearheading exciting new developments in its well established rider care program. The expertise of the MA RACESAFE Medical Team is in hot demand, with this team now providing the Official Medical Service for the 2022 Australian Motocross Championships - MX Nationals, 2022 Australasian Supercross Series and Troy Bayliss Classic, just to name a few. Thanks to a shared vision for rider safety with their sponsors, the MA RACESAFE Medical Team has continued to pioneer new levels of rider care across Australia. Without their dedicated sponsors the MA RACESAFE Medical Team would never make it to track to provide this crucial role.
“Motorcycling Australia is very pleased to come on board as the major sponsor of RACESAFE Australia for 2022 and beyond. The RACESAFE team will be key component of the 2022 mi-bike Australian Superbike Championships, presented by Motul, as well as at the MX Nationals, Australian Supercross Championship and other major MA national events throughout the year. The level of medical service and support provided to these events and our motorcycling community as a whole is unrivalled, and that is why we had no hesitation partnering up together for the good of all of our stakeholders. We are looking forward to working together with RACESAFE to support and enhance the range of services they can offer, which will no doubt benefit our MA membership in many ways.” Quoted Motorcycling Australia CEO Peter Boyle.
