I couldn’t think of a better way to close off this season than at the iconic Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit where competitors will fight for the remaining two coveted YMI Superbike podiums. Round 6 at Winton Motor Raceway saw a fifth straight round victory for Penrite Honda Racing’s Troy Herfoss, clinching the 2018 YMI Superbike Championship with one round to spare. With the Champion already crowned, this final round will showcase the rider’s raw talent as they fight for a top three finish next to Herfoss in the Championship. What makes racing at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit so exciting, is that the racing often goes down to the final lap. Renowned for being a pure riders circuit, Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit boasts one of the highest average top speeds for any track around the world, but it doesn’t come without its challenges. With a sequence of long sweeping turns and high speeds, tyres and bikes must be primed in preparation for temperature deference, stability and rear traction.

But thanks to the classic design of the track where each rider’s strengths and weaknesses are balanced out by the rolling undulations, right hairpins and fast flowing sweepers, we’re in for a close race where the underdog may end up on top! GETTING LICENCED

Starting racing isn’t so hard…

Every club has a secretary who looks after licencing and they will be more than happy to guide you through the process that includes an open book theory test. If you have a civil rider’s licence or have attended a suitably accredited riding school, that should be enough to satisfy the MA State Controlling Body otherwise you may have to undergo a practical riding test to make sure you know the clutch lever from the front brake lever.

The decision to take up road racing is as old as the sport of motorcycle racing. Most of us on [Knee Down] have made that decision with varied results… Chances are that you already own a bike that can be raced. These days there are classes for just about anything with two wheels regardless of age or performance level. That’s the first step out of the way.

PROTECTION JOIN IN The next thing to do is to join a club that includes people with a common interest or are located locally. Log on to Motorcycling Australia’s website (www.ma.org.au). MA are the sanctioning body for all motorcycle racing (other than drag racing) in Australia. On their website you’ll find a full list of clubs in your state or territory. While you’re on the MA site, download their excellent ‘Getting started in Motorcycle Sport’. Don’t be scared about checking out a few clubs before joining one. They’re all unique and finding the right one for you will make the transition to road racer much easier.

While we don’t like talking about it, people do fall off motorbikes on racetracks. MA requires all licence holders to have their own personal Ambulance subscription. We’d recommend that you have your own income protection and that it includes coverage for motorcycle racing. No one wants to use up all of their sickies and holidays recovering from an accident. Protection also includes your own riding gear. Starting from the top, you require a full-face helmet that is approved to AS1698, which is the Australian Standard for helmets for street use anyway. Alternatively, MA also recognises international standards so if your helmet does not have AS1698 you can check with MA that it is ok to use. A set of one-piece leathers that fit is the preferred way to cover the larger parts of your anatomy. Make sure they’re roomy enough for you to wear the mandatory back protector underneath, and a chest protector is recommended too. The best leather gloves you can afford will keep your digits intact if you’re sliding down the track and using your hands as brakes. There’s a huge variety of suitable boots on display at any decent-sized motorcycle shop. Take the time to find a pair that fit properly without being too tight. Tight boots will ruin your day very quickly.

GETTING YOUR BIKE READY If you’re not overly mechanically minded, don’t worry, your local bike shop should be able to check your bike over before you venture on track for the first time. A full service and tune-up now could save you from a big bill later. All racing classes have common rules to ensure bikes don’t fall apart or leak fluid on the track. Before you’re allowed on track at any race meeting, your bike will be inspected by a scrutineer. Don’t give them a hard time if they pull you up and point out something you’ve forgotten. The majority of them have been doing this for a long time and don’t want to see anybody get hurt due to an oversight. Full rules for your class are in the Manual of Motorcycle Sport available at www.moms.org.au. But keep in mind that bike preparation is very important and quite in-depth for racing. Like you, your bike needs controlled fluid retention.

the case with your bike, having shiny new parts is a waste if you are learning. You will inevitably test your riding gear. A lot. So go for an affordable compromise. Don’t buy the most expensive graphics on your lid if a plain white one is going to be cheaper, for example. But don’t skimp on quality…

YMF R3 Cup and GP Juniors cup Two Championships that are great starting points and avenues for younger and beginner racers, is the Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) R3 Cup and GP Juniors Cup.

TIPS FOR KEEPING COMFORTABLE Assuming you’re like the rest of us, you’ll be carting yourself and your bike to the track in a trailer, ute or van. There are a few things we’d advise you chuck in. These may sound obvious but people still forget. Grab an esky and fill it with ice bricks and bottles of cold water. You’ll be amazed at just how easy it is to dehydrate while racing on a hot day. Even though racetrack food has improved from the days of dodgy hamburgers and warm soft drinks, chuck snack-type things in the esky along with sandwiches. You’ll burn off a lot of calories in a day and replacing them with racetrack food could send you broke. Not all racetracks offer covered pit areas so some sort of shade device will make your day much more enjoyable. Don’t forget the sunscreen either. The most important thing to take with you is a sense of humour. On its own this could be the difference between a day best forgotten and one of the best experiences of your life. If you think you can’t afford to race think again. It costs the same to race as it does to maintain a road bike or a track day bike, and entry fees for club racing are around that of a ride day – but you get a lot more laps at many race meetings…

This means riders can thrive and develop their road craft and race skills while on comparative machinery. The next generation of road racing talent can emerge from this class. The GP Juniors Cup is a fantastic platform suited to entry level competition. The GP Juniors Cup provides an immense opportunity for young riders to develop and advance in their sport. THE BIKE You’ll need to spend a bit of time here – all fluid retaining fasteners need to be lockwired, fairings need catch areas in the bellypan, you need a tether kill switch, brake callipers bolts need to be lockwired and you need good suspension, brakes and bodywork. You also need a bullet-proof engine because you are going to thrash it beyond any ride day or road level of thrash! No need to spend big. Start racing on an old bike that you can crash. A lot. The partnership doesn’t stop there, with Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance (YMI) once again being the naming rights sponsor for the YMI Superbike class and YMF again stepping up to brand the YMF R3 Cup. YMF’s partnership with the ASBK Championship is a massive boost for the season, and shows the Yamaha marque has confidence in the direction ASBK is heading. Troy Herfoss Reclaims ASBK Championship Glory Media Release: 13 September 2018 I had a massive gap in the points. I had a massive accident and Glenn Allerton went on to win the next four races in a row and pip me in the Championship. That was my first real year of competing for a title and I learnt a lot from that experience. You always have to fight to the end.

The 2018 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK) witnessed a masterclass season from Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda Racing, CBR1000SP). He managed to wrap up the season with a round to spare, taking eight wins, 11 podiums and three pole positions. We caught up with the new YMI Superbike Champion to reflect on a season to remember. It’s a massive turnaround for Herfoss, whose future was left uncertain after Paul Free’s Honda Team ceased operations in 2017. Now with Deon Coote resurrecting the Honda Team, Herfoss dominated this season, taking the Championship in exceptional circumstances. A few days out from taking the title, Herfoss still can’t quite believe the success they have enjoyed. You’ve had a few days to let the Championship win sink in, how does it feel? It feels so good! I still can’t believe that we were able to wrap it up with a round to go. Its sinking in now, the fact that we’ve had such a great year. I never thought that I would be able to win so many races in one year. Of course, I’ve seen riders dominate certain years in the past and I’ve thought wouldn’t that be incredible to experience that. It sneaks up on you really, as we’ve focused so hard on each individual round. Now we’ve taken eight wins so far and the Championship, still can’t believe it.

At what point of the season did you realise, we are a massive chance here for the title? At Darwin, we were really competitive at a track where Josh and Wayne are typically strong. The way we went about that weekend was great and we managed to take the overall round. We then realised that the Championship was really going our way and to back it up at Morgan Park, we knew we were on the way to another title. What has been the key turnaround with the CBR for this season? I would never take anything away from Paul Free’s team but we tried to get on the new CBR as soon as possible and in reality, we never got on top of it. This year we have really adapted to the bike. Deon Coote has been very motivated and has left no stone unturned. I think a massive difference maker has been to move to K-Tech Suspension for this season. Honda have also been backing us with new parts for the bike. It’s all come together and we’ve shown what the Fireblade is capable of. New team for this season, are you surprised how you hit the ground running back at Phillip Island? I was nervous, because you hear stories about how new teams typically fare. I thought it would take at least a few rounds for us to get going. Once I met Deon and checked out the workshop, I knew I was in good hands. Deon is really driven to win and leaves no stone unturned. He’s also given Shaun Clarke a lot of freedom. It’s just been a dream run with the team. Everyone played their role. What was your highlight of the year? Winning Race One at Phillip Island in mixed conditions was definitely the highlight of the year for sure. We had a very difficult pre-season test and we had plenty of issues leading up to the racing. To win that first race was so cool and it brought everyone together in the team. From then on, we knew we had potential.

Leading into Race Two at Winton, how were the nerves? I was pretty nervous, but I knew I had a massive chance to wrap up the Championship that day. What really settled my nerves was that we had good race pace throughout the weekend. When the flag dropped on Sunday and Wayne jumped out to a gap, it was hard not to get carried away and race for the win. Unfortunately for Wayne, he went down and from then on, I could concentrate on just beating Josh. After Wayne crashed, what was your reaction? As soon as Wayne crashed, I obviously knew that the Championship was there for the taking. We’ve had quite a few red flags at Winton over the years, and it’s easy to make mistakes there. You never know what can happen. Years ago, I lost the Supermoto Championship after

Still one more round to go, what will be the approach? I haven’t had many opportunities to ride out there as the Champion and I really want to leave the season on a high to springboard us into next season. My approach will not change for the final round, I just want to win. Are you already looking to 2019 and defending your Championship? Absolutely, I’ve never been able to successfully defend a Championship before. I really want to be able to say I’ve done that. It’s going to be a massive year next year. We will have some time to rest but I’m going to give it my all. I’ve already signed up to be with Penrite Honda Racing Team next season and I’m ready to go again!

YMI Superbike Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda Racing, CBR1000SP) has captured the 2018 YMI Superbike Championship, in what was an epic showdown at the Spokes.com.au presents Round 6 of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). He managed to wrap up the championship with a round to spare.

on the podium. Crucially Herfoss had got the job done on the previous lap for his victory to be secured. Arthur Sissis (SA Demolition & Salvage, Honda CBR1000RRSP) had a phenomenal race to achieve fourth place and he appears to have his Honda dialed in around here. Daniel Falzon (Yamaha Racing Team, Yamaha YZF-R1) finished fifth, with Superbike rookies Mark Chiodo (Team Suzuki ECSTAR, GSX-R1000R and Ted Collins (NextGen Motorsports, BMW S1000RR) recording their best ever results in sixth and seventh. The fans would have to wait till race two to see if Herfoss could wrap up the title. Race Two This afternoonâ€™s second YMI Superbike race two was once again full of drama. This time Herfoss would lead, but Maxwell would take the ascendency on lap two. Unfortunately crashes by Chiodo and Jamie Stauffer (Craig McMartin Racing, Ducati 1299 Panigale) would cause a red flag.

Race One Herfoss took out the first race which was filled with drama from the outset. It started off with a bang as Bryan Staring (Kawasaki BCperformance, ZX-10R) crashed at turn one. The race was soon red flagged as a result and the riders would have to re-start. When the race got back underway, Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1M) had a lightning start with Josh Waters (Team Suzuki ECSTAR, GSX-R1000R), Herfoss and Troy Bayliss (Desmosport Ducati, 1299 Panigale) in tow. Maxwell was pumping in fast laps but disaster struck when he crashed on lap eight. The Yamaha rider was obviously dejected as he realised it had ended his championship run for 2018. Waters had taken the lead after Maxwell had crashed out, but he now had Herfoss to contend with. Herfoss managed to hit the front with only five laps to go with a daring overtake. Bayliss was also starting to charge and contend for victory. As the race reached the concluding stages, an already crazy affair was brought to an end due to Adam Seniorâ€™s (Senior Engineering, Yamaha YZF-R1) bike catching on fire. As a result, the race was declared at the time of the red flag as two thirds of the race was competed. Taking the win was Herfoss who clawed his way through the field after having a bad start, followed by Waters and Bayliss

When the race restarted, Nathan Spiteri (Livson, Suzuki GSXR1000R) also crashed and that caused yet again another red flag. Upon the third restart, the race would be reduced to 12 laps and Bayliss would lead from Maxwell and Waters. With clear air in front of him it would be interesting to see if he could make a break for it, Herfoss was back in fourth. Maxwell made his move on lap three and would be looking to avenge his crash in race one. In the meantime, Herfoss was content in fourth, holding the championship points advantage he needed to secure the championship. lap 10 and moved into second. Herfoss made a mistake and went too deep into a corner and looked to have backed off, to ensure he won the championship today. Staring passed Herfoss on the final lap. The Honda rider had done enough however, as Maxwell crossed the line to win the race, Herfoss had scored enough points to secure the 2018 YMI Superbike Championship! Herfoss was very emotional to secure his second ASBK Championship. Joining Maxwell on the podium was Waters and Bayliss in second and third. Herfoss sharing after he won the title; “That was too stressful! We had a bad start and we actually had a problem with the quick shifter. I wouldn’t mind going old school but it was cutting in and out. I’m just so happy because we’ve worked so hard and my rivals have been strong. To win it with a round to go, I wouldn’t have dreamt of it. Congratulations to the whole team! Wayne really had to work for that win and I’m sure he’s already planning next year’s assault.”

Max Croker (Mat Mladin Racing, Suzuki GSX-R) took out second overall here at Winton after picking up his first Kawasaki Supersport race win in race one and then third in race two. Tom Toparis (Cube Racing, Kawasaki ZX-6R) had an up and down weekend here at Winton, but he definitely will leave knowing he gave it everything he had, collecting third overall. The feel-good story of the weekend was definitely the return to the class of Nic Liminton (Yamaha, YZF-R6) who collected fourth overall for the round.

Maxwell commenting; “It’s been and up and down day and year and sometimes that doesn’t equate to the effort you put in. There has been a bit of friction at times but I’ve always had the same goals as my team and it was great to end Troy’s winning streak. Congratulations to Troy winning the Championship.”

Race One The first Kawasaki Supersport race was action packed right from the first turn with both Halliday and Tom Toparis (Cube Racing, Kawasaki ZX-6R) running off the track, and that left Croker to nip up the inside and take lead. From the first corner Croker took off and put his head down and put a good gap on the field, cruising to his first Kawasaki Supersport victory by just over two seconds. The championship may have been decided, but ASBK now looks forward to the championship finale at ‘The Island’ October 1214. Its sure to be a great way to send off season 2018, with six classes battling it out for bragging rights.

Cru Halliday (Yamaha Factory Racing, Yamaha YZF-R6) has taken out the 2018 Kawasaki Supersport Championship here at the Spokes.com.au presents Round 6 at Winton Motor Raceway. Halliday also collected the overall round win with a second in race one and a win in race two, to wrap it up the title at the penultimate round of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK). Halliday was speechless and relieved to take out the title here at Winton; “The pressure was on and I brought the new helmet here, so I had to wrap it up. That last lap on the track, I’ve never been so cautious going around a track on a motorcycle! I can’t wait to go out and celebrate this with the team, such a relief

Croker was thrilled with the win; “Absolutely stoked to take the win after a crash in qualifying yesterday and starting from sixth on the grid, a massive thanks to my team for getting the bike together and it was working well throughout the race. Hopefully we can back it up in the next race again,” finished Croker. The win broke Halliday’s winning streak but the Yamaha rider came from 14th after the first corner to fight his way through the field and grab second position, gaining valuable points toward his championship aspirations. A welcome return to ASBK and a podium in his first race back, Nic Liminton (Yamaha YZF-R6) showed he has what it takes to be competitive in the Supersport class after his seamless return here at Winton. after lap five, the pace was a bit to quick up the front for Croker to hang on. Settling for third position in what was a great round for the Suzuki rider. Liminton showed no signs of his absence from the Kawasaki Supersport class, grabbing fourth to back up his third from race one, a great showing and look for him to continue this form at Phillip Island for round seven.

Rounding out the top five for the second time this weekend here at Winton was Pearson, his pair of fifth place finishes will give him great confidence in his return. Sadly, for Rees, he was in the battle for fourth with Liminton but on lap ten he went to try and make a move up on the inside of Liminton, but he pushed the front end just a bit too much and ended up putting the bike down.

Australian Supersport 300 Race One Young Max Stauffer (Rock Oil, Yamaha YZF-R3) has put together the perfect race here in the Australian Supersport 300 class at the Spokes.com.au presents Round 6 at Winton Motorway. Stauffer started from pole position and didn’t look back leading from start to finish, showing a real liking for the Winton circuit here at the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK).

On the first lap Toparis made a move to take the lead from Halliday, but it didn’t take long for Halliday to take back the lead and put a gap between himself and the Kawasaki rider.

Stauffer has been building throughout the season and in race one it was a break out performance. The #127 was challenged midway through the race by Hunter Ford (YRD, Yamaha YZF-R3) but he saw that off to take his first 300 class victory by just over three seconds. Toparis was a man on a mission and was desperate to take out race two, pushing his bike to the limits and putting his breaks under serious pressure. Toparis was going into corners sideways and was riding on the edge, but just couldn’t keep with Halliday at the front. Race one winner Croker was in the mix early in the race but

In third position is current championship leader Tom Bramich (JLT, Yamaha YZF-R3) who was consistent throughout the race but would be disappointed to not battle out the front with Stauffer and Ford. In saying that, his third position gives him handy points in the race for the championship. Oli Bayliss (Cube Racing, Kawasaki Ninja 300) just missed out on the podium and enjoyed a good battle with Bramich, collecting fourth position in the first race of the weekend.

Zac Levy (Puma RV’S, Yamaha YZF-R3) would just miss the last spot on the podium, claiming fourth position behind his Yamaha team-mate Bramich. Rounding out the top five in race two was Locky Taylor (Shark Leathers, Yamaha YZF-R3) who had good speed throughout the race, but just didn’t have the consistent race pace of the lead group. Continuing her consistent season in 2018 was Tayla Relph (Earmold Australia, Yamaha YZF-R3) who grabbed sixth position in race two and will be looking to move herself into the top five in race three. Race Three Stauffer has taken out race three of the Australian Supersport 300 class here at Winton, it was a clinical display to bounce back after a crash in race two. Stauffer lead a close contingent of six riders throughout the eight laps here, but he held his nerve over the last lap to be first across the line.

Rounding out the top five was Zac Levy (Puma RV’S, Yamaha YZF-R3) who continues his consistent season in the Supersport 300 class. Race Two In another absolute classic, the Australian Supersport 300 class once again put on a show, with an eight-lap epic between Ford, Bayliss and race one winner Stauffer. The trio went back and fourth with a pass made in almost every corner of the Winton circuit, but it would be Ford who prevailed taking out race two.

Bayliss would have to settle for second, but he didn’t leave anything in the tank, during that last lap every corner Ford was looking for away around Stauffer and, but just couldn’t get the move done and won the sprint to the line behind Stauffer. Taking the last spot on the podium was Ford, another one who was a part of that lead group throughout the eight laps, he even led at different stages of the race. A drag to the line with Bayliss, saw Ford fall short of second by the smallest of margins. Just missing the podium was Levy who grabbed fourth, but a positive for Levy is that he gained point on Bramich in the race for the Championship. Speaking of Bramich he would finish only one position behind Levy in fifth.

The battle was great, and Ford was stoked to prevail on the last lap; “It was a really good race, the battle at the front between Max, Oli and myself was great and we just tried to pull away from the field. I was just lucky to hold on during the last lap and take the win,” said Ford. The Yamaha rider ended up taking the victory by just under a second, but on the final lap the battle for second between Bayliss and Stauffer saw both riders pushing it to the limit. Sadly, for Stauffer he pushed it just a little to far and crashed out trying to make a move on Bayliss. Bayliss would cross the line in second, whilst Stauffer would end up not finishing the race after his crash. Championship leader Bramich was the beneficiary of the Stauffer crash as he moved up to the final spot on the podium, and his third position saw him extend his points lead to 38 points.

Taylor would be the next rider to cross the line in sixth and be at the back of that lead group. Taylor was unlucky to finish in sixth as he was only .300s off the back of Bramich in fifth, as the riders at the front were all so close, which is usual with the 300’s class. In seventh position was Relph who would be happy with her race, but she needs to find extra speed to jump into that top five consistently.

2018 YMF R3 Cup ramps up! Thanks to continued support from naming rights sponsor Yamaha Motor Finance, the entry-level R3 Cup race series is expanding for 2018. The YMF R3 Cup racers were able to showcase their talent at Winton Motor Raceway for Round 6 and it was Max Stauffer (Rock Oil, Yamaha YZF-R3) to take the round overall in an impressive display. The R3 Cup technical rules are now aligned with the Supersport 300 technical rules. This means that entrants will be able to enter more races with their YZF-R3s. Supersport 300 entrants on Yamaha R3s on all levels of riding ability are encouraged to cross enter to the R3 Cup to be in with a chance of winning a range of prize money.

Entrants will continue to be able to purchase a YZF-R3 plus race kit at a discounted price of $7900 RRP inc GST. Customers who already have an R3 can purchase the race kit separately and parts are available from Yamaha dealers and Race Center. The Race Center support program, as per the previous two years, continues to offer assistance to all 2018 YMF R3 Cup events by providing spares and technical support and to assist in bike setup. The YMF R3 Cup Prize Pool continues with a total of $22,000 cash incentives. Watch the fiercely contested series at these venues:

In addition to the top prizes for winning and placing, the R3 Cup also offers rookie, encouragement and a lady’s cash incentives in order to encourage grass roots participation.
