Yamaha Racing Team (YRT) rider Wayne Maxwell had a mixed start with a DNF in the first race but managed to bounce back and take the win in race 2 and 3rd in race 3 leaving him in 6th place overall. New YRT recruit Daniel Falzon had a very consistent start to the season with a 5-6-5 placing him 5th overall.

GETTING LICENCED

Starting racing isn’t so hard…

Every club has a secretary who looks after licencing and they will be more than happy to guide you through the process that includes an open book theory test. If you have a civil rider’s licence or have attended a suitably accredited riding school, that should be enough to satisfy the MA State Controlling Body otherwise you may have to undergo a practical riding test to make sure you know the clutch lever from the front brake lever.

The decision to take up road racing is as old as the sport of motorcycle racing. Most of us on [Knee Down] have made that decision with varied results…

Chances are that you already own a bike that can be raced. These days there are classes for just about anything with two wheels regardless of age or performance level.

That’s the first step out of the way.

PROTECTION JOIN IN The next thing to do is to join a club that includes people with a common interest or are located locally. Log on to Motorcycling Australia’s website (www.ma.org.au). MA are the sanctioning body for all motorcycle racing (other than drag racing) in Australia. On their website you’ll find a full list of clubs in your state or territory. While you’re on the MA site, download their excellent ‘Getting started in Motorcycle Sport’.

Don’t be scared about checking out a few clubs before joining one. They’re all unique and finding the right one for you will make the transition to road racer much easier.

While we don’t like talking about it, people do fall off motorbikes on racetracks. MA requires all licence holders to have their own personal Ambulance subscription. We’d recommend that you have your own income protection and that it includes coverage for motorcycle racing. No one wants to use up all of their sickies and holidays recovering from an accident.

Protection also includes your own riding gear. Starting from the top, you require a full-face helmet that is approved to AS1698, which is the Australian Standard for helmets for street use anyway. Alternatively, MA also recognises international standards so if your helmet does not have AS1698 you can check with MA that it is ok to use.

A set of one-piece leathers that fit is the preferred way to cover the larger parts of your anatomy. Make sure they’re roomy enough for you to wear the mandatory back protector underneath, and a chest protector is recommended too.

The best leather gloves you can afford will keep your digits intact if you’re sliding down the track and using your hands as brakes.

There’s a huge variety of suitable boots on display at any decent-sized motorcycle shop. Take the time to find a pair that fit properly without being too tight. Tight boots will ruin your day very quickly.

GETTING YOUR BIKE READY If you’re not overly mechanically minded, don’t worry, your local bike shop should be able to check your bike over before you venture on track for the first time. A full service and tune-up now could save you from a big bill later. All racing classes have common rules to ensure bikes don’t fall apart or leak fluid on the track. Before you’re allowed on track at any race meeting, your bike will be inspected by a scrutineer. Don’t give them a hard time if they pull you up and point out something you’ve forgotten. The majority of them have been doing this for a long time and don’t want to see anybody get hurt due to an oversight. Full rules for your class are in the Manual of Motorcycle Sport available at www.moms.org.au. But keep in mind that bike preparation is very important and quite in-depth for racing. Like you, your bike needs controlled fluid retention.

the case with your bike, having shiny new parts is a waste if you are learning. You will inevitably test your riding gear. A lot. So go for an affordable compromise. Don’t buy the most expensive graphics on your lid if a plain white one is going to be cheaper, for example. But don’t skimp on quality…

YMF R3 Cup and GP Juniors cup Two Championships that are great starting points and avenues for younger and beginner racers, is the Yamaha Motor Finance (YMF) R3 Cup and GP Juniors Cup.

TIPS FOR KEEPING COMFORTABLE Assuming you’re like the rest of us, you’ll be carting yourself and your bike to the track in a trailer, ute or van. There are a few things we’d advise you chuck in. These may sound obvious but people still forget.

Grab an esky and fill it with ice bricks and bottles of cold water. You’ll be amazed at just how easy it is to dehydrate while racing on a hot day.

Even though racetrack food has improved from the days of dodgy hamburgers and warm soft drinks, chuck snack-type things in the esky along with sandwiches. You’ll burn off a lot of calories in a day and replacing them with racetrack food could send you broke.

Not all racetracks offer covered pit areas so some sort of shade device will make your day much more enjoyable.

Don’t forget the sunscreen either.

The most important thing to take with you is a sense of humour. On its own this could be the difference between a day best forgotten and one of the best experiences of your life.

If you think you can’t afford to race think again. It costs the same to race as it does to maintain a road bike or a track day bike, and entry fees for club racing are around that of a ride day – but you get a lot more laps at many race meetings…

GET YOUR GEAR ON You need the best you can afford and then some more. Spend more on your gear than your bike if you have to but, like is

Costs involved in these classes are minimal so that getting started in road racing will be attractive to as many people as possible. This means riders can thrive and develop their road craft and race skills while on comparative machinery.

The GP Juniors compete on Yamaha YMF-R15’s. The GP Juniors feature young racers going head to head while learning the fundamentals of racing. The next generation of road racing talent can emerge from this class. The GP Juniors Cup is a fantastic platform suited to entry level competition. The Yamaha R15’s handling and power delivery characteristics are predictable, dependable and reliable.

The GP Juniors Cup provides an immense opportunity for young riders to develop and advance in their sport. With the full backing and support of well-established organisations, at an affordable price, as the rider’s hone their skills and progress, who knows where they will end up!

THE BIKE You’ll need to spend a bit of time here – all fluid retaining fasteners need to be lockwired, fairings need catch areas in the bellypan, you need a tether kill switch, brake callipers bolts need to be lockwired and you need good suspension, brakes and bodywork. You also need a bullet-proof engine because you are going to thrash it beyond any ride day or road level of thrash!

No need to spend big. Start racing on an old bike that you can crash. A lot. Because you will…

The initiative – supported by the manufacturers, will be run by the host club in conjunction with Motorcycling Australia, and is designed to give kids who are at the track a taste of what it is like on board a bike!

Full safety gear and bikes will be provided, as well as a free day-license so that the kids can have a go in a safe and controlled environment.

MA has always been committed to bringing new people into the sport – especially kids, the benefits of programs like this is that they get to try it out in a safe and controlled environment.

YMI Superbike Bryan Staring (Kawasaki BCPerformance, ZX-10R) has turned Round 1 of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK) on its head, taking out the overall victory after a stellar ride from 13th on the grid to win Race Three of the YMI Superbike class. It’s a debut to remember on the BCPerformance Kawasaki, whilst Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha Racing Team, YZF-R1M) found redemption after a dark day on Saturday to claim Race Two at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda, CBR1000SP) took an incredible victory on Saturday.

Staring leads the YMI Superbike Championship with 60 points, followed by Waters and Herfoss, both with 59 points.

Race One set the tone for the whole weekend, with bar to bar racing as a pack of five went back and forth, but Hefoss came out on top. The typical unpredictable weather struck at the Island, as Race One was stopped and re-started due to rain. The second running of Race One left the riders six laps to battle it out, and did they ever. Herfoss took the win from Troy Bayliss (Desmosport Ducati, Panigale R FE), Josh Waters (Team Suzuki ECSTAR, GSX-R1000R) and Staring, who were all separated by under .499s.

Race Two was a battle from the outset from eventual winner Maxwell and Waters; the pair made a break from the pack and duked it out for the win. Maxwell got the better of Waters to take the win by .935s. Staring made his way from 13th on the grid to sneak onto the last spot on the podium, after a tight tussle with Herfoss and Bayliss.

Staring saved his best ride of the weekend for Race Three, as he came from 13th on the grid to take the victory. Staring chased down the lead pack that included Waters, Maxwell, Herfoss, Bayliss and Falzon before making his move for the lead on lap eight. After making his move to the front, the pack couldn’t get passed Staring as he took the win from Waters, Maxwell, Herfoss and Falzon. The finish was

Kawasaki Supersport The weekend couldn’t have gone any better for Tom Toparis (Cube Racing, Kawasaki) as he claimed all three Kawasaki Supersport Race wins. Starting at fifth on the grid, Toparis made his way to the front in quick time and put a gap between him and the field.

Cru Halliday (Yamaha Racing Team, Yamaha YZF-R6) was consistent in his return to the Kawasaki Supersport class aboard the new Yamaha YZF-R6; grabbing three-second place finishes at a track that has not brought him the best results in the past.

Nic Liminton (Yamaha, YZF-R6) bounced back after a crash in Race One to claim two third places to finish his weekend.

After qualifying fastest and getting his hands-on pole position for the three races, Broc Pearson (Yamaha, YZF-R6) had a consistent weekend which bagged him third overall after finishing the races with a fourth and two fifth place finishes.

Toparis now leads the Kawasaki Supersport Championship with 75 points, Halliday sits in second with 60 points and Pearson rounds out the podium with 50 points.

Australian Supersport 300 The Australian Supersport 300 paddock put on a mega show for onlookers, with nail biting racing all the way to the chequered flag, at Round 1 of ASBK. Oli Bayliss (Cube Racing, Kawasaki Ninja 300) took out the overall win, after claiming wins in Race One and Race Three.

YMF R3 Cup Round One of the YMF R3 Cup brought plenty of excitement to the Phillip Island Circuit, we saw three different winners over the weekend, but Tom Bramich (Yamaha, Yamaha YZF-R3) came away as the overall winner.

Bramich started the weekend as the man to beat, qualifying fastest and starting from pole for the three races. In Race One he got off to a flyer and led from start to finish and sending a message to the rest of the paddock.

Bayliss had a weekend to remember which including a daring overtake on the final straight of Race Three, where he came from fourth to win inside the final 2 meters of the race.

Tom Bramich (Yamaha, JLT YZF-R3) was consistently in the mix up the front of the paddock and claimed Race Two, but a few minor mistakes in Race One and Three, left him in second overall for the weekend.

In Race Two the racing was exciting with a pack of five making the break from the rest of the pack. Bramich, Hunter Ford (Ford Brothers Racing, Yamaha YZF-R3), Zac Levy (Puma RV’S, Yamaha YZF-R3), Harry Khouri (Acid Racing, Yamaha YZF-R3) and Locky Taylor (LTR Racing, Yamaha YZF-R3) were all involved in a tight tussle that saw an overtake at nearly every corner, but it would be Ford who prevailed taking the win from Bramich and Levy.

Another consistent performer over the weekend was Locky Taylor (LTR Racing, Yamaha YZF-R3) who was up with the lead pack all weekend long, and managed to leave Round One third overall.

Race Three went down to the wire, with Levy making a calculated daring move down the final straight to pip Bramich. The pair led a group of five riders to the line, which included Taylor, Ford and Khouri, the group was separated by only .345s at the finish line.

Bayliss leaves Phillip Island as the points leader in the Australian Supersport 300 class with 70 points, ten points clear of Bramich on 60 points and Taylor is third overall with 55 points.

2018 YMF R3 Cup ramps up!

Thanks to continued support from naming rights sponsor Yamaha Motor Finance, the entry-level R3 Cup race series is expanding for 2018.

The YMF R3 Cup racers were able to showcase their talent on the world stage during the WorldSBK weekend for Round One and it was Tom Bramich to take the round overall in an impressive display.

The R3 Cup technical rules are now aligned with the Supersport 300 technical rules. This means that entrants will be able to enter more races with their YZF-R3s. Supersport 300 entrants on Yamaha R3s on all levels of riding ability are encouraged to cross enter to the R3 Cup to be in with a chance of winning a range of prize money.

Entrants will continue to be able to purchase a YZF-R3 plus race kit at a discounted price of $7900 RRP inc GST. Customers who already have an R3 can purchase the race kit separately and parts are available from Yamaha dealers and Race Center.

The Race Center support program, as per the previous two years, continues to offer assistance to all 2018 YMF R3 Cup events by providing spares and technical support and to assist in bike setup.

The YMF R3 Cup Prize Pool continues with a total of $22,000 cash incentives. Watch the fiercely contested series at these venues:

In addition to the top prizes for winning and placing, the R3 Cup also offers rookie, encouragement and a lady’s cash incentives in order to encourage grass roots participation.

GP JUniorS AUSTRALIA The second round of the 2018 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK) also features the GP Juniors Cup where competitors will ride the dynamic Yamaha R15 on Bridgestone Tyres. After a successful re-launch of the class in 2017, the GP Juniors Cup is set for another exciting year in 2018.

comprised of Yamaha R15 machines. All GP Juniors Cup bikes are completely standard with strict regulations to ensure they remain a level playing field with Bridgestone control tyres. The final category is for the younger brigade, of 9 to 11-year old’s who compete on 79cc two0stroke machines at alternate meetings of GP Juniors Australia.

Over the past decade there is an impressive list of graduates including; current MotoGP racer and Grand Prix winner Jack Miller. 2015 Australian Superbike Champion, Mike Jones and Daniel Falzon who has won three Australian 600cc championships in consecutive years.

GP Juniors Australia is the evolution of the Motorcycle Road Racing Development Association or “MRRDA” as it was commonly referred.

2018 marks the 12th year of competition for the national series and while the name may have changed over the years, the philosophy is exactly the same; to create a structure and provide youngsters with an avenue to greatness.

To be good at any sport one has to start at a young age.

Road racing is no different. Young riders learn to take responsibility for their actions and show exceptional maturity as the nature of the sport requires a mature attitude and conduct at all times. They also learn about mechanic’s, physics and engineering, all benefits that will hold them in good stead for their entire life.

Others that have used junior road racing as a springboard include, Josh Hook (2011 Australian 125cc Champion), Jed Metcher (2011 European 600cc Superstock Champion), Troy Geunther (2016 Australian Supersport Champion). Other notables that have competed in junior road racing include rapid girl Tayla Relph, Tom Bramich (2015 Australian Moto3 Champion), Matt Barton, Ben Leonard, Locky Taylor, Callum Alderson and Matt Walters.

The GP Juniors Cup will join ASBK for Rounds 2, 5 and 6 of the 2018 Championship.

GP Juniors Australia is split into four categories: ages 1216 years for an Australian Championship of up to 160cc four-strokes, 85cc two strokes and the GP Juniors Cup
