In my world where we train and educate, grant credentials and degrees, manage enrollment and retention, plan and assess, and build and innovate, I have concluded that our success is tied directly to three words: CONNECT. CONNECTED. and CONNECTIONS. The IMPACT of these three words is powerful and can be life-altering.

Motlow State is at its greatest height, and this is an exciting time to be a part of the College. The IMPACT of our greatness is realized through our ability to connect, be connected, and support connections internally, externally, regionally, nationally, and globally. We connect with our students, peers, colleagues, communities, and beyond. With the approval of the new Distilled Spirits program, an expanded Mechatronics program, and the launch of an Electric Vehicles Technology program, coupled with scaling the digital wallet concept across the College and beyond, the Motlow State IMPACT is immeasurable. Simply stated, Motlow State is experiencing its best life. I often pinch myself as a reminder that this is not a dream; it is our reality.

Our reality is the result of our ability to CONNECT, be CONNECTED, and nurture CONNECTIONS. Motlow’s IMPACT is tied directly to our Strategic Initiatives, which serve as a guiding light and road map for the institution’s directions. The five-tier plan addresses open access; completion in multiple areas: persistence to completion, completion of associate degrees, and effectiveness of persistence; and enhanced workforce and community relations. Because of our collective work, I am pleased to report that Motlow has already achieved its proposed 2025 goals. It’s obvious. The success manifests our IMPACT. Motlow’s CONNECTED IMPACT is exhibited inside and outside of the class, on stage where plays and concerts are performed, in galleries where art is displayed, in athletics where champions reign, in clubs and organizations where leaders are birthed, and in hallways and parking lots where interactions can be as simple, yet as powerful, as someone saying, ‘good morning.’ The success of Phi Theta Kappa, SkillsUSA, The Honors Program, Study Abroad, and more is attributed to CONNECTIONS. The CONNECTIONS with business and industry leaders, higher education partners, K-12 peers, and national, state, and local elected officials contribute to our IMPACT—and that IMPACT gives hope, inspires, and transforms communities.

The IMPACT Report tells our stories about our people, communities, and projects. The CONNECTIONS are obvious and lead to the College’s success. Inside these pages, you will meet Motlow alumna Ms. Helen Hayes, a Mechatronics and first-gen graduate, who is employed at BASF, LLC, in Sparta. Helen is the epitome of success made possible through CONNECTIONS. It’s simple. The IMPACT of Motlow State is tied directly to three words: CONNECT. CONNECTED. and CONNECTIONS. a field trip to Motlow and the TCAT. I saw the 870 line [Amatrol Mechatronics lab equipment] and immediately knew, ‘I can do that. That’s what I want to do someday.’”

Running robots captivated Helen. She was inspired by the idea of using these powerful resources to create something new.

Connecting All the Elements

Community + College + Partners = Success Her story of hardship-to-growing economic prosperity reflects personal grit and a network of valuable connections.

Together, they created a long chain of cohesive bonds that distilled into Helen’s formula for success.

The oldest of six children, Helen’s story begins with a mass of barriers that reflect the challenges faced by many firstgeneration college students. “I lived with my grandmother. No one I knew had a degree. I was always working. I was always taking care of kids (her younger siblings).

And I was told, clearly, that I would never amount to anything,” said Helen.

Resources were low in her Centertown home. Demands were high. She filled a sandwich role in her family as caregiver to generations both older and younger; always working, rarely feeling like she was getting ahead.

The catalyst for Helen’s earliest career dreams came from an eighth-grade field trip. A self-proclaimed quiet, inquisitive nerd at school, Helen’s curiosity often annoyed her peers. But her teachers encouraged her questions and challenged her to think about her future. “We went on 6

For the first time, Helen began to think about college. She would major in Mechatronics at Motlow. Grant-funded dual enrollment classes at Warren County High provided an early launch for her burgeoning plans. After high school, a Promise Scholarship covered her college tuition at Motlow while she worked at Dollar General and quickly became assistant manager. During her first year in Mechatronics, Helen was the only female in the program. By her second year, she forged lasting friendships with two other young women breaking into the maledominated industry.

“The new apprenticeship program that BASF and Motlow have developed is a key program to allow the Sparta, TN site to be successful. Helen is the first graduate of the program and has already shown how her increased knowledge of PLCs and automation will be invaluable to the BASF operations.”

Despite a busy work-home-school schedule, Helen made time to participate in programs hosted by the Evening Exchange Club of McMinnville. There, she met Ken Roberts, a local developer and owner of Security Equipment Company. The Exchange Club’s high school service organization Excel gave Helen opportunities to see herself in a larger community context and gave her the opportunity to do volunteer work that honed her professional disposition.

Roberts also connected Helen to a broader professional network. He introduced her to Larry Flatt, Executive Director of the Automation and Robotics Training Center (ARTC) in McMinnville.

Flatt connected Helen to John DiCicco, Operations Manager at BASF’s Sparta site. DiCicco connected Helen to a BASF apprenticeship. (continue on page 24)

Since Fall 2017, 194 dual enrollment students have earned associate degrees from Motlow while also graduating high school.

•

Ninety percent of the Fall 2021 Middle College Cohort earned an associate degree in Spring 2023.

•

The AAS in Distilled Spirits has been approved

by TBR and is pending SACSCOC approval for implementation in Fall 2024.

•

The Fall 2022 Fall-to-Spring retention rates for first-time freshmen increased to 74.5%.

•

The nursing program was reaccredited with ACEN through 2033.

•

Under the direction of Associate Professor of English and Tutoring Director Jenna Caviezel, the tutoring center supported 1,432 tutoring sessions

with a 448% increase in face-to-face sessions.

Under the direction of Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Math Lab Coordinator Andrew Sweeney, the math lab supported 584 tutoring sessions.

Associate Professor of History Ramona Shelton served as TBR faculty regent, representing all faculty at TBR institutions.

•

Associate Professor of History Dr. Monica Butler has led the charge on Open Educational Resources development, enabling students to save money on education by using OERs in lieu of textbooks.

Associate Professor Nathan Sweeton, Honors Director, has revived Motlow’s Honors program, increasing honors courses from 9 to 19 sections from Spring 2023 to Fall 2023.

Motlow is recognized by the Federal government as the #1 community college in Tennessee with the highest transfer-out rate for Title IV students.

•

Motlow will soon seat its second cohort of students in the Paramedic-to-RN program, allowing emergency professionals to transfer their skills from the ambulance to the clinic.

•

Eighteen students presented scholarly research presentations in the 2023 High Impact Practice Symposium and met the requirements to earn an undergraduate research badge on their transcript.

•

Visits to the transfer webpage increased by 49% from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023.

•

Thirty-two students in LaVergne High School’s (LHS) Middle College Program graduated college before graduating high school. They are now attending 4-year universities and technical programs, many on scholarships, at colleges including Vanderbilt, UTK, Trevecca, and Lipscomb.

LHS has a history of increasing student success by raising aspirations. Motlow has a variety of dual enrollment plans that allow high school students to attain a college degree before a high school diploma. We celebrate and empower fast-track plans that launch early success.

Motlow’s summer camps enable gradeschool students to learn about Robotics and Google Information Technology at the Smyrna, Fayetteville, Moore County, and McMinnville locations.

Motlow’s retention of pell-eligible first-time freshmen increased from 48.4% in 2021 to 55.1% in 2022.

•

Increased efforts were developed for adult students such as the Reconnect Cafe and the Maturing Minds student organization led by Eric Murry and Dr. Phyllis Adams respectively. Reconnect Cafe events at the Smyrna campus focus on helping adult learners succeed. Non-traditional adult students at Motlow’s Smyrna campus can use these events to meet other students, learn how to balance work and academic responsibilities, and join study groups.

This creates a community specifically for supporting adult learners.

•

Women’s Soccer, launched in 2017, played home games on its own field for the first time in 2023. The team has been regular season champions since 2018 and conference tournament champions in 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2023. They were Southeast District champions in 2021 and 2022, and National Tournament contenders in 2021 and 2022.

•

Basketball teams renewed their competitive edge this season with fan events infused with energy, making home games go-to events again. That vitality was bolstered by the unveiling of a newly-branded gym floor, sporting athletics’ refreshed brand and improved lighting. Motlow will host conference tournaments on this new court in 2024.

Business and Finance Success: • Construction on the 8,000 sq. ft. expansion of the ARTC facility at the Motlow-McMinnville campus began in the Fall of 2023.

•

A generator for the data center has been approved for state funding to better support business continuity.

•

IT worked with external companies LEF and DXtera on version 1.0 of the Metaversity app for tracking microcredentials supported by the $500,000 THEC grant.

•

Motlow began developing a new Master Plan for the College to update space needs for new programs.

•

IT supported the implementation of EAB Navigate, a CRM platform used for student advising; furthermore, IT has started preparation for SLATE implementation which is a CRM platform for enrollment management.

•

The Motlow College Foundation continued to support Billy Hix in his endeavors to bring STEM education into local K-12 schools.

•

The Public Safety Department has been given the responsibilities for hiring and managing campus security officers for the McMinnville, Murfreesboro, and Shelbyville TCATs.

•

Security enhancements include an upgrade to the emergency notification system, the addition of body cameras and bulletproof vests for officers, and replacing security cameras.

The College made significant upgrades to enhance basketball facilities, including a $249,000 new gym floor, as well as updates to branding, lighting, and technology for streaming games.

•

Motlow expanded upon it’s cyber security posture by adding a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) which also allows the College to take full advantage of the state’s cyber insurance policy.

The College also invested in 24/7 attack detection security and joined the Cyber and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), gaining access to free training and free penetration tests and vulnerability scans. CISA also provides subject matter expertise and helps Motlow meet state and federal compliance standards.

The College developed a 5-year plan for technology infrastructure upgrades and additions, including increasing bandwidth and new circuits to ensure business continuity, along with upgrades to classrooms and buildings requiring $3 million in funding.

Security, Finance, and Marketing advanced student safety and campus branding using oneway-vision vinyl to prevent intruder line-of-sight in open spaces with full-window walls. It also used the collaboration to address academic integrity compliance in testing spaces while creating an indoor promotion of student services and greater visibility of the Motlow brand.

STRATEGIC PLAN REVIEW On November 17, 2023, the Institutional Oversight Committee and the Office of Institutional Research conducted its annual review of Motlow’s Strategic Plan.

The institution has already met its Fall 2024 overall enrollment goal, as well as goals for 3-year and 6-year graduation rates.

The opportunity was a perfect match for Helen because the BASF apprenticeship paid her for her time in class and provided her an additional after-class work schedule so that she qualified as a full-time employee at BASF, an employment status that immediately gave her benefits including healthcare, 24

vacation time, and retirement, all while still pursuing her degree.

Helen graduated in May and continues working full-time at BASF with a team she says feels like family. Together, they create the chemistry that produces the raw materials for products from car seat parts to outdoor power tools. At the Sparta plant, Helen knows that her work

plays a specific role in the fabrication of things like chainsaws, drills, and leaf blowers—tools that help others create their own economic prosperity. “I like seeing things in the world that I can say, ‘I made that.’ People use what I make.”

BASF’s connection with Helen has moved the company to recruit more staff through apprenticeships. Leadership

feels they get higher-caliber candidates.

“They are more motivated, they have great initiative, and their commitment and knowledge are strong,” noted DiCicco. BASF-Sparta hopes to introduce 2 to 3 more apprenticeships soon. As the first apprentice at BASF’s Sparta site, at only 20-years-old, Helen’s future now includes opportunities to work anywhere in the world where there’s a BASF facility.

So, what does Helen want for the future? When asked, her smile widens as she raises her eyebrows, looks at her supervisor, DiCicco and proudly announces, ”I want John’s job someday.”

Small-town Helen Hayes is using her degree to break industry stereotypes.

She catapulted from believing that she would never amount to anything to believing she can help lead a world-class organization.

In her success, Helen enjoys a degree of local notoriety as the new face of modern apprenticeships. As a frontline champion for higher education and advocate for new-collar training, Helen gladly shares the story of her success. She’s a conduit for connecting others to the programs, people, and possibilities that can change lives quickly. “People come up to me and ask, ‘Are you Helen? I saw you on social media!’ And I tell them, ‘Go for what you want. You can do it.’” She has two younger sisters already talking about following in her footsteps.

“I was told I would never amount to anything.

I proved them wrong!”

Helen had a lot of wonderful people who made small but critical contributions that, collectively, made a HUGE difference in her life. Her success is the model benchmark testifying to the value of forging community + college + partnership alliances. Everyone has a role to play in making the right connections.
