We here at What’s On just love food. For years we’ve championed everything, from the finest of diners to the beefiest of burgers. If it’s in the capital, we’ve hunted it down, tasted and rated it, and probably gone back for seconds, too. And that’s why we just love the What’s On Awards. Here we get to see where you – our lovely, wonderful, hungry readers – love to eat, too. Because our 39 trophies – from favourite brunch to business lunch, and from favourite seafood to steakhouse – are all voted for by you. Well, almost all of them; we get to choose four of the big winners, because we want to get involved, too. You can’t have all the fun. Check out the complete list of winners, including your favourites in the world of leisure, entertainment and attractions, from page 14. When we’re not dressed up and stuffing our faces, we need something to work off those excess kilos, and this month we’re off on an adventure around the UAE’s best nature spots (p36). If that fails to burn off the calories, a spot of padel should do the trick. The new sport in town, we’re serving up some of the best places to give it a go. Read more on page 58, and then come find us on court – we’ll be the chubby ones with a smile on our faces… Enjoy the issue,

THIS MONTH WHAT’S ON LOVES… Haircuts and ice cream at… Chalk Great haircuts in Dubai aren’t hard to find. But a mirrored room with strobe lighting for before-andafter snaps, a retro ice cream machine whipping up soft serve, and a lovely Brazilian man named Paulo Sloboda who is practically a hair-cutting wizard? You’ll have to go to Chalk in Alserkal Avenue for that. @chalk – Laura Coughlin, Head of Content

Eating for Greece at… Myrra Greek has to be one of my favourite cuisines, which is no surprise given my undying love for cheese. Myrra offers a brilliant selection of Greek and Spanish dishes from its beachside location, served up with the same kind of warm hospitality you would expect in the Med. My must-try suggestions? The octopus with confit potatoes, the tuna carpaccio and the wagyu souvlaki. @myrrarestaurant

Staycationing offshore at…Anantara World Islands Dubai I get to do a lot of cool stuff in my job at What’s On, and being the first to check out new things is up there with the best bits. Last month, I checked-in to the first resort on the World Islands, a Thai-inspired paradise that joins Anantara’s already swoon-worthy collection of hotels. It’s easy to feel like you’ve left Dubai for the Maldives with its collection of private pool villas, tended to by villa hosts who are also on-hand to arrange floating breakfasts or a cosy cinema under the stars. It’s true weekend bliss. @anantaraworldislandsdubai – Alice Holtham, Group Digital Editor

Eating pretty incredible pizza at… Antonia

Though I was born and raised in the UAE, I still want to take time learning more about Emirati culture. During Ramadan, I will be attending the Ramadan Themed Weeks at Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) at the picturesque Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. An ‘Open Door, Open Minds’ policy, residents and tourists are invited to come together to enjoy iftar following an open discussion where any question – from Muslim faith to family values – can be asked all in an effort to gain knowledge and understanding. @smccudubai

We humans are an infinitely varied bunch and that leads to quite the subjectivity when it comes to liking things. While we’re never all going to see eye-to-eye on which restaurant serves the best pizza, I would like to suggest that you give Antonia at Mamsha Al Saadiyat a try. Its fluffy, 72-hour fermented Roman sourdough base, authentic Italian flavours and pizza available by the slice, has found no trouble topping my list of favourite UAE pizzerias, and it might just top yours, too. @antonia.uae

JARDEL SILVA EVENTS MAESTRO

Vuitton’s Cruise SS22 Trunk Show at The View at the Palm. Working with an iconic, luxurious brand forced me to understand different ways to design events. The trunk show was incredibly successful, which made me even more determined to show that anything is possible. Do you think being in the UAE has contributed to your success? Absolutely. Dubai has been the pinnacle of my success because it has emerged as one of the world’s leading destinations for events. Being available, responsive and showing up for high profile events whilst having strong connections has definitely contributed to my success. Who would be your dream client? Cristiano Ronaldo because he is innovative, powerful and influential, not only as the greatest footballer of all time, but as a role model for future

AE Famous is a What’s On page focusing on people out there making the scene. They’re out there around town, shaping the UAE into what it is, creating the culture, food and life around us. We asked them what’s good in the UAE. We asked them what’s bad in the UAE. We asked them to tell us more, more, more about their wonderful selves…

“I CREATED A HEART-SHAPED STRUCTURE ON THE BURJ AL ARAB HELIPAD WITH A PIANO THAT WAS AIRLIFTED IN...” Your concepts are one-ofa-kind. What got you into event planning? During university, Jumeirah Group were recruiting Brazilian talent for the Burj Al Arab and Madinat Jumeirah. I moved to Dubai and worked my way up, and after four years I began working with a design company where I executed events for royalty. That’s where my passion for creating modern, ultra-chic events began. What’s been your most challenging project to date? I was hired to execute Louis

generations. He is constantly looking for new and creative ways to make the world a better place, and there is plenty we can all learn from him. Where in the UAE would you love to host an event, but haven’t yet?

The Museum of the Future because it is the future of events. The architecture enables me to think outside of the box and to create new designs and event concepts. What’s the most outrageous request you’ve had from a client? A client asked me to design an event for his wife’s birthday. I proposed the Burj Al Arab to the client. After receiving the permits from Dubai Holdings, I created a heart-shaped structure on the helipad of the Burj Al Arab with a walkway of red roses and a piano that had to be airlifted in. The dinner was topped off with a one-of-akind lighting show, as well as 200 drones and fireworks. What do you love about Dubai? It’s so inspiring. In the 13 years I have lived here, I’ve seen the growth of innovation in the city, which is very exciting. I love how safe the city is with so many interesting people to meet and new places to see. What stresses you out about the UAE? I have adapted to the rich culture, understood the way of life and followed the rules. I would love to grow and be part of this innovative city not only as a resident but also a citizen. Do you think Dubai will be your forever home? Dubai will always be the headquarters for Eventchic Designs and my dream to expand offices globally. Dubai will be my second home but Brazil will be my forever home.

The What’s On Awards Abu Dhabi took over W Abu Dhabi — Yas Island last month. It’s a pretty big deal (even if we say so ourselves), widely recognised as one of the region’s most important leisure and entertainment awards. We dished out awards to 39 winners, and 29 outlets were placed highly commended, honouring the emirate’s most elite places to eat, and have fun 14_What’s On

CHEF OF THE YEAR Chef Sharbel Akiki

RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR Fouquet’s Abu Dhabi

In 2021, we awarded Fouquet’s as Newcomer of the Year. Since then, it has only grown in reputation and regard. Fouquet’s represents the very top tier of fine dining in Abu Dhabi, with a masterful menu celebrating the very best of traditional French cuisine, alongside subtle perfumed whispers of regional influence. It is an experience that qualifies as a work of art in the purest sense.

Like the restaurants themselves, there’s a lot of talent in our city’s kitchens. Chef Akiki has created a masterful and impressively varied menu at Levantine restaurant, Stouff Beirut. But in between dabbling with new fusion ideas, has still found time to design and execute a range of delicatessen products, including artisanal jams, pickles, oils and more.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR

INDIE RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR

Raclette Brasserie & Café, found in the thriving new foodie hub of Mamsha Al Saadiyat in an impossibly handsome beachfront venue, has been the talk of the town since opening. On the menu are a roll call of scintillating grills, Mediterranean flavour thrills, and of course, lava lakes of that melted eponymous cheese. They had us at the name.

This authentic Roman-style pizzeria trades in a red-hot selection of pizza al taglio, or ‘pizza by the slice’, with a sourdough base built from organic Italian flour, and it has immediately established an entire legion of devoted fans. Us included.

FAVOURITE BRUNCH

A sleek steakhouse with a celebrity chef, Oak Room has twice been our Restaurant of the Year. Celebrity clientele, delicious dishes and sultry interiors are just some of the things that impress us most, but we also love the hidden entrance, the leather chairs and velvet banquette seating, and the atmospheric lighting.

We feel like we have a pretty good idea of your selection criteria deployed for the perfect brunch. There needs to be a strong and varied food element, live entertainment and gorgeous views. There was zero surprise then, that your choice for Favourite Brunch was Nahaam.

Mosaic Restaurant, Muroor

FAVOURITE BRUNCH

Appaloosa, Marriott Hotel Al Forsan This smart sports bar may have migrated its Crackling-ly Good Brunch from Friday to Saturday with the weekend change, but its free-flowing drinks, meaty menu and funfilled vibe still remain. As does its wallet-friendly price: Dhs279 with house drinks and Dhs399 with bubbles.

There are now two outposts of this purveyor of delicious Middle Eastern cuisine, but it’s the original in Muroor that has been recognised as your favourite for 2022. Mosaic offers traditional Lebanese hospitality, along with a strong variety of great tasting Levantine classics. What’s On_27

YOUR COMPLETE GUIDE

I

t’s no secret that Abu Dhabi absolutely loves a leisure mega project. It’s a city that is committed to coming up with new ways to give engineers and architects fractal fever dreams. But this drive for innovation, for the abstract and the new, is part of what makes Abu Dhabi so unique.

32_What’s On

One of the newest, and now partly open, mega projects in the capital is Al Qana — a Khor Al Maqta’a waterfront destination offering a diverse mix of leisure, hospitality, and entertainment. This is our guide to what’s open right now at Al Qana and what is coming soon.

The National Aquarium Experience the life aquatic at what is currently the Middle East’s largest aquarium. There are 22,000 local and international marine creatures, a collection of above-sea-level animals, 10 zones of exploration, interaction opportunities and a chance to go BTS, with glass bottom boats, tank dives and exclusive educational tours. a The National Aquarium Abu Dhabi, Al Qana, Al Maqta, Abu Dhabi, from Dhs105. AL QANA

Taste Restaurant

NOTORIOUS

The Marina The stunning Riviera-style Al Qana Marina is a vibrant new waterfront destination with berths for 106 boats, plus new restaurants, cafes and lounges. For those lucky enough to own a boat, Al Qana Marina accommodates vessels up to 80 feet in length, and offers a range of high-spec vessel services for yacht owners including cleaning, assisted berthing, concierge and vessel preparation. There’s both day pass and annual memberships available, the latter of which come with perks including offers on memberships to Al Qana’s leisure offerings: The National Aquarium and The Bridge lifestyle hub. q alqana.ae

The Bridge The Bridge is a holistic health and lifestyle destination, located right in the heart of Al Qana. Their wellness manifesto is divided into distinct areas under headings like ‘Move’, ‘Pause’, ‘Expand’, ‘Taste’ and ‘Learn’. The highlights are that the facility includes a gym with 250 exercise work stations, therapy rooms with hydro-oxygen airpods, cryo treatment, Infrared saunas and its own spa. There’s a healthy eating restaurant, a cold-press juice bar and a rooftop garden lounge. It also

offers yoga classes, meditation, and workshops on breathwork. The Bridge will host learning experiences too, with the aim to inspire, and provide a community hub for enjoying cultural activities through art, music, film and books. q thebridgehub.com

A name that you won’t likely be forgetting, Samer Mashal is the founder of an entirely new cafe concept, debuting in Al Qana: “We are very excited to begin our journey in Abu Dhabi. We believe that Al Qana’s vison, dynamic offerings and waterfront location makes it the perfect spot to introduce our dramatic, wild, and unconventional brand to the world. The Notorious Cafe has been conceived as a retro-styled brand inspired by New York City in the 1960s. It was essential for us to create a unique and unforgettable experience for our customers, to inspire them with our coffee brewers and live roasters, all of which are sourced directly from farmers and roasted inhouse, and retail offerings.”

FOOD STALLS There are a number of static alfresco caffeination stations and food trucks scattered throughout the Al Qana complex. You can, for example, enjoy the traditional Emirati snacks served up at Fifty Fifty or head to Frites for a gourmet portion of everybody’s favourite fried potato dish. Nomad offers deliciously dainty pastries and Mado Dondurma has got your Turkish dessert cravings covered.

Located at The Bridge, Taste is one of the first F&B projects to open at Al Qana. It’s a gorgeous rooftop venue offering watery vistas for discerning sistas and mistas, as well a menu built on 100 per cent organic food and craftily curated mocktails. q thebridgehub.com

The boat cruise What better way to explore Al Qana’s ode to Abu Dhabi’s maritime history than with a scenic boat tour? These pleasure cruises are now available between 2pm and 10pm.

Cartel Already a household name on the capital’s coffee connoisseur circuit, these home-grown roast masters have thoroughly switched things up for this new outlet. The brand’s founder Nasser AlMaskari, said: “Being Abu Dhabi’s leading specialty coffee roaster, we are delighted to open our new flagship store at Al Qana, a new prestigious culinary destination in the capital. “Our new concept mirrors Al Qana’s aspiration to create social entertainment and human connections through uplifting experiences as Abu Dhabi’s go-to urban dining destination. We would like to thank Al Qana for their commitment to supporting local entrepreneurs and are excited to showcase an unparalleled coffee experience.” q @cartelcoffeeroasters What’s On_33

ADRENARK Adrenark is set to offer a wide range of fun and energy-expending facilities, including a large indoor park. Adventuretainment activities will include wallrunning, dodgeball, foam pit frolicking, trampoline double bouncing, parkour, ziplining, roller skating and more.

Pinky Fish Yet another concept from MBT Restaurant Management, this seafood-focused diner promises “unique signature interactive tableside experiences”. We don’t know for sure, but from the whispers we’ve heard, it sounds like this menu will have a Mediterranean flavour. Could we see plateless servings of paellea, like a sort of European version of the Dampa serving ritual? We can’t wait to find out.

OTORO Set to offer a modern Japanese dining experience, Otoro’s (the name comes from a prized cut of tuna) menu will feature ‘quirky sushi’, Japanese wagyu steaks and a collection of sharing-style dishes.

34_What’s On

Cinemacity One of the main family entertainment attractions will undoubtedly be the 15-screen Cinemacity. A massive movieplex that comes kitted out with Abu Dhabi’s largest cinema screen, coming in at a huge 26 metres, will host the latest blockbuster screenings, with potential red carpet moments on the horizon. Recent updates also include the news that a lively outdoor amphitheatre will also be positioned close to the cinema and will be designed to host special event such as festivals, concerts and exhibitions. Alongside the amphitheatre, the waterfront will come with the equipment to put on light and water spectaculars.

Oii

Joud Café Already serving brews and delighting cafe crews in three other Abu Dhabi locations, this brand is a known and wellloved capital quantity. Talking about the upcoming Al Qana launch, Keshar Pacchai, area manager of the innovative chain said: “Our partnership with Al Qana is part of our strategy to expand the Joud Cafe brand into key leisure and tourist destinations in Abu Dhabi.”

Pixel

Grand Beirut This will be the fourth UAE outlet of the popular Lebanese restaurant chain owned and operate by MBT Restaurant Management. The group has had a busy year, with new concepts Beirut Sur Mer and Raclette, opening on Saadiyat Island to grand appraisal. The brand reputation for authenticity and consistency makes this announcement worth getting very excited about.

Fouad Mashal

Wing It

Pixel will be the largest gaming hub of its type in Abu Dhabi and include the latest evolution of Location-Based Entertainment (LBE). In addition to futuristic VR tech, the venue will also operate the first certified eSports academy in the region. Speaking about the news, Fouad Mashal, the CEO of Al Barakah International Investment and developer of Al Qana, said: “In line with our vision to bring world class experiences to Al Qana, our partnership with Robocom VR will position Pixel as one of the most sought-after VR and eSports destinations in the UAE.”

We don’t have much information on Wing It, but we presume it will sell chicken wings or there’s a massive wasted opportunity there. We’re also told the menu will include kebabs, wraps, and fries — so it sounds like a neat little fast food stop for those in search of the quicker, less fussy bite.

Space Café Speaking about the big second step for the brand, general manager Abdulla Alhesbi said: “Building on the success of our first store opening in Ras Al Khaimah two years ago, we are taking great pride in expanding our local brand in the capital, in one of the most sought-after locations. “Al Qana is the ideal location for our guests to find their perfect space where they can enjoy their time over a variety of food and beverages in a unique friendly ambiance.”

Describing the cuisine at this restaurant, Ayesha Al Mansoori, founder and CEO of Oii, said: “Al Qana’s unique blend of modernity and tradition makes it the ideal fit to introduce our Mediterranean fine dining concept which adds a signature contemporary twist to traditional recipes passed down through the generations”.

Epic nature spots worth visiting in the UAE

36_What’s On

INTO THE WILD

Jubail Mangrove Park The stunning Jubail Mangrove Park in Abu Dhabi is an absolute must-visit for nature-seekers. A meandering boardwalk will guide visitors on a nature trail through the mangroves near Yas Island. As well as the stunning nature walk, there are loads of activities for the whole family to get involved in, such as guided boardwalk tours (from Dhs50), kayak trips (Dhs100), and e-canoe tours (from Dhs80).

THIS WAY TO

Sir Bani Yas Island Have you ever wanted to wake up to an African dawn? Or dreamt of seeing gazelle nibbling the grass metres in front of where you sit with your morning cuppa, or watching a giraffe lazily munching the top of a tree just a few metres further away? Well, you can do all that at a place that’s only a road trip away. Many UAE residents are often surprised to learn that Abu Dhabi has a remote island housing 11,000 wild animals. Those who are in the know about Sir Bani Yas, however, will already appreciate the unique characteristics that make a 3.5-hour trip to the island feel more like a Kenyan escape than a staycation in the capital. A must-try is the nature and wildlife drive, which lasts about 90 minutes (Dhs320 per person) where your guide will show you the enormous range of wildlife roaming free on the island. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of cheetahs and get up close and personal with a friendly giraffe from within your open-top Land Cruiser. What’s On_37

INTO THE WILD

MASFOUT A 90-minute drive from the centre of Ajman, this tiny enclave is located in the rugged Hajar Mountains, flanked by Hatta, Ras Al Khaimah and Oman. It’s an off-the-beatentrack favourite for hiking and mountain biking, and the old fort is particularly interesting.

Love Lakes, Al Qudra Perhaps the most well-known man-made lakes in Dubai, the interlocking hearts of the Love Lakes have garnered plenty of interest and visitors since they were first revealed a few years ago. Whether you’re picnicking, walking or taking in the sunset, it’s certainly a wonderful UAE nature spot to do it in. Nearby at Al Qudra Lakes, you’ll find plenty of ducks and swans.

Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary More than 20,000 birds inhabit Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary and it’s perhaps most famous for its magnificent flock of flamingos. To see them, all you have to do is rock up to one of three viewing hides dotted around the perimeter of the sanctuary. Entrance is free and there are binoculars available to borrow, too.

Hatta Dam Believe it or not, this stunning turquoise dam is less than a two-hour drive from Dubai. To make the most of the calm waters, rent a kayak or pedal boat from Hatta Kayak. Alternatively, head for the hills on a hiking adventure and get ready for some breathtaking scenes. 38_What’s On

JEBEL JAIS The highest peak in the UAE at 1,934-metre, Jebel Jais is even occasionally dusted with snow. A switchback road snakes up the mountainside delivering vistas of barren, eroded cliffs, deep canyons and warped escarpments around every bend. There are pullouts for photograph-stops along the way, but for the ultimate panoramic mountain views, you’ll want to head up to 1484 by Puro restaurant near the summit. For a more upclose-and-personal mountain experience, Jebel Jais has its now-famous zipline, or you could try the brand new toboggan ride.

Al Qurm Nature Reserve Another stunning UAE nature spot is the natural mangrove forest in Al Qurm Nature Reserve, which you’ll find on the southern outskirts of Kalba village, on Sharjah’s east coast. The 500-hectare park of protected mangroves is home to species such as Arabian-collared kingfishers and hawksbill and green turtles. Enjoy guided kayak tours or go paddle-boarding around the area.

Fossil Rock One of the UAE’s most iconic natural wonders, Fossil Rock juts out of the desert and is riddled with corals and other marine creatures deposited here some 65 million years ago when the area was flooded by an ancient sea. Take a moment to soak in the spellbinding view of dunes and mountains unfolding before you as far as the eye can see, then take a trip to the Mleiha Archeological Centre to learn more about the area.

NEW!

Sharjah Safari Sharjah recently diversified its tourism opportunities with the addition of a huge safari park, which opened in February. Sharjah Safari, located within the Al Bridi Reserve in the city of Al Dhaid is 16 square kilometres, making it the largest safari project outside of Africa. Around 50,000 animals (120 species) call the safari home, including gazelles, giraffes, African wild turtles, crocodiles, lions, rhinos, African rock python, elephants and flamingos. The park has a large natural lake and 100,000 African trees, as well as restaurants, cafes, a safari visitors camp and more. q @shjsafari

WADI AL HAYL If you love nothing more than a challenging hike on a craggy, rocky natural landscape then popular nature spot Wadi Al Hayl might just be what you are looking for. Along the way, there’s plenty to see, from the Hayl Fort and Watchtower looking Northwest up Wadi Hayl, the dam in the Wadi Hayl, as well as birds and other native creatures.

WHAT ’S ON AT THE GRILL

Dinner and a show at Marriott Hotel Al Forsan’s signature steakhouse... As any meat-lover knows, Abu Dhabi has some excellent spots to enjoy a good old steak dinner. Whether you’re after British beef, Argentinian asado, or a 1kg tomahawk ribeye, the capital’s restaurants will provide. But last month, team What’s On, together with a group of 25 Abu Dhabi foodies, ate our way through one of Abu Dhabi’s newest and most exciting steakhouse menus. On Wednesday March 9, we hosted another edition of What’s On the Menu, this time at Marriott Hotel Al Forsan’s signature steakhouse, The Grill — and by every measure, it was a roaring success. Leading the culinary team at The Grill is executive chef Sudhanshu Nirmal. He’s been influential in positioning the restaurant as one of the leading restaurants in the capital. The night saw guests dine on a special set menu that championed the restaurant’s newest additions. There was an Italian buratina salad served with huge heirloom tomatoes, candied quince and basil pesto; a purple charred Spanish octopus appetiser; and the hugely

42_What’s On

indulgent peanut butter foie gras sandwich served on brioche and a cherry compote. But it was the show-stopping mains that forced everyone off their seats to get a close up view of the kitchen, where chef Sudhanshu worked diligently behind open flames charring a gigantic tomahawk in full view. The Grill specialises in dishing up delicacies from this very grill, using top grade meat cuts from the US, Australia, Argentina and Spain, and pairing them with local produce to create the perfect steak dinner. Served sizzling on a hot plate, it’s as much a vision as it is delicious. What’s On would like to extend a huge thank you to our hosts at The Grill for a wonderfully fun – and filling – evening. PARADISO ABU DHABI

Yas Bay’s little piece of Paradiso... ext up on our leisurely tour of Yas Bay gastronomy is Paradiso. Spiritually, it’s anchored somewhere along the shorelines of the Mediterranean, but fortunately for us it’s physically located at Pier 71 on the Yas Bay Waterfront. It’s the latest Abu Dhabi project from Groupe Barrière, a restaurant built on the culinary vision of chef Pierre Gagnaire (Fouquet’s) and Frenchcuisine queen chef Nicole Rubi (the mastermind behind Nice’s La Petite Maison). And it makes quite the first impression, inspired by the wonder and whimsy of the Golden Age of cinema (the restaurant’s name, presumably a nod to the ‘80s Italian masterpiece, Cinema Paradiso, which is itself an ode to moving pictures). It also draws heavily on the glamour of the Côte D’azur in the ‘70s – it’s Nice both in adjective and address. Inside, a mural shows a map of the Mediterranean, strewn with black and white era pop culture icons, the floor tiles play out their own game of monochrome geometry, and it unlocks the faintest of long forgotten memories. Out on the terrace, we never tire of those Yas Bay views, and the table set up continues the nostalgic Mediterranean theme with pristine white table cloths, wickerwork chairs and pastel parasols. The menu is compact. Our server recommends specials that are set to join it soon, but currently lie off-page. To start, we choose snails (Dhs75), and a grilled octopus salad (Dhs79). We’ve essentially ordered ‘molluscs done two ways’ and after the first few forkfuls, we’re smug about our choice. The snails offer something more than the traditional Parisian bistro

N

set menu, there’s a depth there, a suggestion of citrus that vanishes as quickly as it appears leaving us wondering if it was imagined. Octopus is a notoriously tricky customer when wafted over a grill. It’s easy to overcook in search of the perfect crisp. But this morsel finds itself just on the right side of the bite-tender ratio. It’s served with lentils, red peppers and sauteed potatoes. It’s at this point we become aware of the venue’s soundtrack and the mix of ‘60s and ‘70s swing blends so effortlessly. There’s a band that plays here at weekends, a live DJ every night, and we’re also told that the mixology offering is worth a visit, too. Paradiso has more volume when it comes to the main dishes. We’ve heard great things about their pizza and pasta options, but our server also let slip that one of the specials, joining the full menu

soon, is sole meuniere (Dhs260). And try as we might, we’ve never been able to resist the allure of that lemony buttery banner carrier for French flavour. The fish arrives and is delicately deboned and filleted beside the table. Then we’re left alone in quiet contemplation with our sole. It’s a struggle to properly communicate just how much of a joy this is to eat, it has to rank up there with the best dishes available in Abu Dhabi restaurants right now. It’s the pageantry of subtle flavour shades. Nothing on the plate seeks to overpower or overshadow, no single element wrestles for glory to the detriment of others. It’s an early autumn day in Provence; it’s the faintly blossomed mistral breeze; it’s a gentlemanly duel between citrus and creamy butter. It’s very good is what we’re trying to say, and it’s a great place to let the credits roll. Fin. Verdict: This might just be our new favourite restaurant at Yas Bay. It certainly stands shoulder to shoulder with Abu Dhabi’s other great examples of Mediterranean cuisine. a Pier 7, Yas Bay Waterfront, daily noon to 11pm. @paradisoabudhabi RATING Food A Atmosphere Price

ANTONIA

A little pizza something special on Mamsha Al Saadiyat he promenade at Mamsha Al Saadiyat cuts a border between the calming yin of bone-white beach and the gluttonous yang of a restaurant strip. It feels very much like a stretch of European Riviera. Sitting on the bright terrace spaces of this gastronomic meridian, as we are now, it’s practically impossible to avoid the enchantment of the uniquely beautiful coastline. We’re camped out at Antonia, an uncontrived licensed Roman restaurant with the chief menu proposition of pizza al taglio (pizzas ‘by the slice’). On the menu are crispy calamari (Dhs85), suppli (risotto balls, from Dhs12) and burrata (Dhs85). We gaze lustfully at traditional, bonafide-Italiano pasta

T

and risotto options, too. Dishes such as bucatini all’amatriciana (Dhs80), tomato sauce, pancetta, and pecorino cheese; gnocchi alla Sorrentina (Dhs85) with homemade ricotta gnocchi, tomato sauce, Parmesan, mozzarella and basil; and risotto ai porcini e scamorza, which comes with carnaroli risotto (Dhs95), porcini mushrooms, parmesan and scamorza. Today is about the pizza though. At Antonia you can choose between full or half trays of their square-baked pizzas (half is good for one person). There’s also the option to get a selection of them ‘by the slice’ (from around Dhs25). We order one slice of diavola (the traditional Italian version of a salami pizza) and one of tartufo e funghi (a classic mushroom and truffle option). They are both a triumph. First, the 72-hour fermented Italianprovenance sourdough base is a masterpiece. It’s light and airy, puffed up with self-appreciation of its layered earthy flavour. There’s crunch and bite

in that dough. There is a more objective measure of just how good a pizza base is. Keep an eye on the servers returning plates to the kitchen. How many of them have the discarded, uneaten crusts on? At Antonia, it’s a clean sweep, only immaculate, crustless plates head back to the potwashers. We tear through the diavola, each foray into the mouth echoes with the aroma of authentic European beef salami, tomato sauce that is unmistakenly the result of genuine Italian culinary craft, and warming tones of chilli oil. The tartufo e funghi is a fitting bedfellow, part balancing act part spin-off show, it’s an artful montage of individual rustic chords pulled straight outta the Roman ‘campagnaside’. Verdict: Is this the best pizza in Abu Dhabi? Miei amici, it very probably is. a Mamsha Al Saadiyat, Saadiyat Island, midday to 11pm. MEET THE CHEF

CHEF MARCELO URRESTI

InterContinental Abu Dhabi What was the first dish you ever made from scratch? Seafood paella. This was one of my father’s favourite dishes. He used to prepare it for friends and family at every gathering and I would help him. Who were your culinary heroes growing up? As a child my parents were my heroes. Later on in my career, I looked up to Gaston Acurio, Ferran Adria, Wylie Dufrasne, Andoni Luis Aduriz and Martin Berasategui (whom I had the honour to work with). Let’s talk about your restaurants. Do you have a favourite outlet? Well, I would say Chamas, due to my Latin heritage, but after trying the food from the hands of Chef Saway in Fish Market and Chef Saeed in Byblos Sur Mer, it’s a very difficult choice to make. What’s the one ingredient you couldn’t live without? Being Bolivian, I would say corn or potato as these are our daily staple. They have so many varieties and uses that you could never tire of tasting. Who do you love cooking for? My family and friends. Last supper. What and where are you eating? Seafood ceviche, while spending the day by the beach with my wife. a InterContinental Abu Dhabi, abudhabi.intercontinental.com

IFTAR SPOTLIGHT

Coya Abu Dhabi

An elegant Peruvian iftar at the city’s coolest venue As one of the capital’s most lively nightspots, Coya Abu Dhabi isn’t the most obvious place for iftar. In fact, everything about Coya’s Peruvian-inspired take on Ramadan dining is far from ordinary. Covered with beautiful designs, paintings from local artists and providing stupendous views over the waters of Al Maryah Island and Downtown, the eclectic dining room is a vibrant and upbeat place to end the day. Presenting a tempting array of dainty, yet very satisfying Coya favourite recipes and Latin American specialities, the set menu remains true to tradition and starts with some huge sweet dates. But here is where the expected ends. As the dramatic sunset concludes, we nibble our way through a bowl of fresh edamame, and choose between a tangy tomato, or creamy pumpkin and Manchego soup. From here comes a flood of appetisers, including refreshing cucumber and apple salad (we love how the almonds add an extra crunch, and the chilli an extra kick), salmon maki rolls, wagyu beef baos with a

hint of zesty passionfruit, enormous tiger prawn skewers and crispy yuca croquettes. We can taste the sheer quality of each ingredient with every bite. Moving onto the mains, we quickly conclude that the Chilean sea bass, featuring the perfect combination of sour lime, fiery chilli and creamy sweetcorn, is on another level of delicious. We’re also pleasantly surprised by the flavoursome, filling and vegetarian-friendly quinoa and pumpkin mix, while the slow-cooked beef ribs are covered in a soy, miso and lime chilli glaze. Finally, the chef ’s special Ramadan dessert draws on the best flavours of the UAE to create an artistic display of date cream, white chocolate, pistachio and creamy camel milk ice cream. It leaves us scraping the bowl. NEW RELEASES

Magical Law While Harry Potter is the reason the Wizarding World mythology came into existence, Albus Dumbledore is one of the magical franchise’s most important supporting protagonists. In addition to the elder Dumbledore providing counsel through the original Harry Potter movies, his younger self, played by Jude Law, has played an integral role in the Fantastic Beasts movies. That continues in the aptly-titled Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, and Law has reflected on what it’s like to play this character.

On the character “What a privilege it is to play Albus Dumbledore. One of the world’s most powerful wizards. A man who believes in the good in people and someone quick to offer wise, if not cryptic, words of advice.”

DIRECTOR: David Yates CAST: Jude Law, Mads Mikkelsen, Eddie Redmayne, Jessica Williams, Katherine Waterston

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore The mythical franchise continues

Set several years after the events of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald, (but decades before the original Harry Potter films), this latest release sees beloved wizard Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) task magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave muggle baker on a dangerous mission that takes them into the heart of dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald’s (played by Mads Mikkelsen who replaces Johnny Depp) army. But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?

On living up to expectations “I wasn’t even thinking about the pressure. We’re not trying to recreate the 110-year-old Dumbledore.”

On growing a beard “We were meant to start filming the day London went into lockdown. I thought maybe I should shave off the beard, but I couldn’t bear going through the ‘two-week burn’ again. I have a lot more grey hairs than the first movie that’s for sure...”

It’s a story told through the eyes of Amleth (Skarsgård), who witnesses the murder of his father, King Aurvandil (Ethan Hawke), at the hands of his uncle, Fjolnir (Claes Bang). With his mother, Queen Gudrun (Nicole Kidman), captured, Amleth flees his native land. But he vows revenge on the one who took everything from him.

Morbius DIRECTOR: Daniel Espinosa CAST: Jared Leto, Burk Sharpless, Jared Harris, Matt Smith Ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius (Jared Leto) attempts a desperate gamble. The Contractor DIRECTOR: Tarik Saleh CAST: Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Gillian Jacobs, Kiefer Sutherland After being involuntarily discharged from the US special forces, James Harper (Chris Pine) decides to support his family by joining a private contracting organisation alongside his best friend (Ben Foster) and under the command of a fellow veteran (Kiefer Sutherland). NEW ON NETFLIX

Bridgerton [NEW SERIES] Netflix’s resident Regency-era romance series is back for more melodrama. This time around, the show follows the eldest Bridgerton, Anthony, on his own quest for a wife. The classic rom-com trope this time sees Anthony’s fiancée’s disapproving and very protective older sister reluctantly warming up to him, but perhaps a little too much so.

Anatomy of a Scandal [NEW SERIES] Based on the bestselling novel by Sarah Vaughan, Anatomy of a Scandal follows James (Rupert Friend), a parliament minister who is thrust into the spotlight when something from his past comes to light. Of course, his family, including wife Sophie (Sienna Miller), are caught in the crosshairs. Add Michelle Dockery as a prosecutor in James’s case and the drama unfolds. 54_What’s On

Amazing AlUla Get ready to discover a side of Saudi that promises to wow all intrepid explorers

A

lUla’s significance as a crossroads of ancient civilisations dates back thousands of years. While it’s largely remained off-limits to the public, that changed in 2020 when AlUla opened some of its sights to visitors for the first time. Since then, the historic town of AlUla, located 1,040 60_What’s On

kilometres northwest of Riyadh, has been transforming into an incredible open-air museum. It has built on its storied past to carve a future filled with resorts and glamping retreats create into the desert landscape, restaurant pop-ups aplenty and festivals that celebrate the rich history, art and culture of the region.

THE TO-DO LIST

Pay a visit to Al Jadidah, where old meets new The latest addition to AlUla’s growing number of attractions is AlJadidah, which has been transformed into a pedestrianised hub for art, culture and dining. It’s easy to walk around the entire of AlJadidah, meaning ‘new town’ in Arabic, which has been cleverly divided around five separate squares. Overlooking AlUla Old Town, highlights include Oasis Square, where live musicians entertain those that gather; Moayadah Square, with its array of street food vendors and food trucks; and Art Square, home to Cinema Al Housh, AlUla’s first arthouse cinema, showing an array of English and Arabic independent films

Check out the dazzling Maraya Hall A Guinness World Recordbreaking venue, AlUla’s Maraya Hall is an architectural feat, and officially recognised as the world’s largest mirror clad building. The 500-seater concert hall has already played host to stars including Enrique Iglesias, Alicia Keys, Lionel Richie and Andrea Bocelli.

Watch the sun set at Jabal AlFil (Elephant Rock) There are a whole host of sunset spots across AlUla, but Jabal AlFil – commonly known as Elephant Rock – is one of the best places in AlUla to watch the day turn to night. In front of the looming Jabal AlFil, given its moniker thanks to its size and shape, is an array of sunken seating carved into the sand, plus bean bags and benches, giving visitors a front row seat to watch the sun dip behind the famous geological formation. It’s free to enter, and there’s now even a Salt food truck located within the grounds, alongside a coffee shop.

Take a tour of Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in a vintage Land Rover Hegra was the first site in Saudi Arabia to be inscribed onto the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008 (a further five have since been added). There’s a collection of 110 tombs to discover that date back some 2,500 years. Some tombs are better preserved than others, but decoration and inscriptions are all visible. The best way to maximise your trip is with a local Rawi as your guide in a vintage Land Rover, which stops at five key sights over a two-hour tour. What’s On_61

Merkaz

Circolo On the rustic outskirts of AlJadidah, a serene oasis surrounds Circolo, an Italian restaurant that serves as the perfect spot for a long, lazy lunch. Twirling ribbons of al dente linguine are served in a sauce of wild mushrooms and truffle oil, or order one of the artisan pizzas, with a perfectly crisp base topped with flavours such as pesto burrata, eggplant, caramelised onion and bacon, or pulled lamb. q @circolo.pizza

Okto

Looking to tick “eat like a local” off your AlUla bucket list? In the heart of AlUla Old Town, make a pit-stop at Merkaz, a casual café serving traditional Arabian dishes in a setting peppered with outdoor pergolas, palm trees and fairy lights. Settle into one of the plush sofas and don’t leave without a piping hot pot of karak. q @merkaz_ksa

Bringing the sandy beaches of Greece to an AlUla mountain top by way of Riyadh, Okto brings contemporary Greek cuisine to one of the best vantage spots in AlUla: Harrat Viewing Point. The restaurant – painted allblack – blends into the moody slate colours of the mountain peaks, and guests gather around tables that dot a central bar, with woolly ponchos on hand to keep guests warm when the temperature dips. q @okto.sa

Maraya Social The vast AlUla desert might not be a predictable choice for a Michelin-pedigree chef, but that’s where you’ll find Jason Atherton’s Maraya Social. A European brasserie housed on the rooftop of the mesmerising Maraya Hall, Maraya Social is the British chef’s first restaurant in Saudi Arabia. Inside, the leafy green restaurant is beautifully botanical, while outside, a terrace lit with flickering candles and the rocky façade create a dramatic backdrop. q marayasocial.com

The best way to get around is on an electric bike, and there’s something truly freeing about whizzing through the valley that way (although there are buggies too for those looking to give their legs a rest). The main restaurant, Tama, which means ‘here and now’, is designed as a space for bringing guests together, with big lounge spaces and lots of long tables for dining with groups of guests. On the menu, nourishing dishes are globally influenced with a strong Middle Eastern presence, and ingredients sourced from local farms take centre stage. There are a separate, open-air seating space, which leads out to a shimmering infinity pool: it’s the perfect spot to dip between the water and the relaxing ambience of the lounge. Habitas started as a community-focused series of events, so it makes sense that there’s plenty of other gathering spaces too, including the glass-lined reception, a lounge and coffee bar and a shala as part of the wellness offering where breathing and meditation workshops take place. Installations originally commissioned for the first Desert X AlUla are also shaped into the resort offering, allowing guests to ignite their inner child with a giant swing set backdropped by huge rock formations and trampolines hidden in the desert sands. q ourhabitas.com

LASTMINUTE TRIP Banan Beach is equal parts chill beach hangout, glamping perks and DIY dining If you’re scouting the UAE for a beachy getaway, there’s a decent chance you’re flipping between The Palm (Dubai), Saadiyat Island (Abu Dhabi), or maybe even a drive to Ajman, and if you’re looking for a luxury splash, that’s the right track to be on. But when you’d rather a more boho getaway (with your four-legged pal in tow, perhaps), take a savvy step over to Banan Beach in Ras Al Khaimah instead.

The look and feel Sure, Ras Al Khaimah has those glitzy fivestar resorts we all adore, but Banan Beach is a mini-hippy village in itself. Guests ride around – past painted murals and huge 1,000-year-old olive trees – on rickety old trikes. Among the blue and white facades, you’ll spot a little supermarket and a butcher’s, then there’s an outdoor bar and restaurant with rotisserie chicken spinning over an open fire.

Facilities and activities There’s an adult pool, a family pool and fire pits (where guests gather at sunset for ridiculously delicious hot chocolates stuffed with toasted marshmallows). There are hammocks where guests sway to the DJs’ beach tunes, a line of rustic cabanas looking out to sea, and a cluster of A-frame wooden chalets ranging from two-person ‘small tents’, larger ‘loft tents’ to the biggest threeroomed ‘chalets’. For the lower end ‘tents’, you’ll find communal showers in the centre of the campground. There’s also a barbecue area for guests to DIY their own meals.

The rooms There are three types of accommodation to choose from: Small Tents – This is the most basic 66_What’s On

“RAK HAS THOSE GLITZY FIVE-STAR RESORTS, BUT BANAN BEACH IS A MINI HIPPY VILLAGE.” option. There are 50 beach camp ‘tents’, with one double-sized bed inside each, plus two deckchairs outside. You’ll be using the communal showers and bathrooms. Loft Tents – This is the mid-range option. There are 12 two-bedroom ‘loft tents’, each with two double beds and one bathroom per loft, plus a seating and barbecue area outside. Chalets – This is the top-end option. There are 10 three-bedroom chalets, with three separate en-suite double rooms, plus your own private pool, swing, bar, barbecue area and fridge.

The food and drink When it comes to food, there are two options. Either you order from the alfresco restaurant, which serves up a range of authentic Palestinian cuisine as well as pizzas, salads and amazing burgers with

caramelised onions, or you can head to the BBQ area and do it yourself. There’s also a bar by the pool where you can order drinks. We opted for dinner at the restaurant, but made breakfast ourselves with the much-appreciated aid of the Banan Beach culinary crew. Everything is ready for you: pots, pans, fresh veggies, eggs, spices, bagels, even your own grilling station complete with chopping boards and knives, it’s all prepped for you to get stuck in.

The room rates The ‘Small Tents’ prices start from Dhs300 for two people; ‘Loft Tents’ start at Dhs950 for four people; and ‘Chalets’ start at Dhs1,950 for six people. All include DIY breakfast. a Banan Beach, Ras Al Khaimah.

RAMADAN GUIDE 2022 | 3

KNOW YOUR STUFF

About Ramadan

Ramadan is expected to begin on April 2, with Eid Al Fitr celebrations commencing on May 2. But what does it all mean? Here’s all you need to know

What is Ramadan? The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is a time when Muslims around the world abstain from eating, drinking or smoking between sunrise and sunset. Lasting about a month, it marks the time when the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Extra tarawih prayers are performed at the mosque throughout Ramadan and each evening 1/30th of the holy book is recited. By the end of Ramadan, observers have read the entire Qur’an. Why is Ramadan so important to Muslims? Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, considered mandatory by believers. The pillars are the framework by which Muslims everywhere live, and Ramadan is considered the holiest time in the Islamic calendar. It is a time for prayer, reflection and 6 | RAMADAN GUIDE 2022

religious devotion, to cleanse past sins and to focus on Allah through good deeds. Why do Muslims fast? Fasting, or sawn, loosely translates as ‘to refrain’. So during Ramadan Muslims commit to not eating, drinking or smoking during daylight hours. But sawn isn’t just about physical restraint, it also refers to bad thoughts, actions and words. Ramadan is often a time to spend with family, breaking fast at sunset. The fast itself is intended to help Muslims learn about selfdiscipline and enable them to empathise with those who have less.

RAMADAN GUIDE 2022 | 7

KNOW YOUR STUFF Must everyone fast? For Muslims, everyone is required to fast, but there are exceptions. Young children, pregnant women and the elderly and infirm are not required to fast due to possible health complications. Women on their monthly cycle do not fast, nor do people who are ill. If there is a temporary break in the fast, Muslims are required to make up the missing days after Ramadan. Non-Muslims are not required to fast. However, they should behave sensitively throughout Ramadan, which means no eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours. Does everything close during the day? Most restaurants remain open

during Ramadan, but may have shorter opening times so it’s best to call ahead at the venue. The places that are open during the daytime may have curtains or panels in place to conceal people eating and drinking from those fasting. Everything tends to happen much later in the day during Ramadan. Malls close even later than usual. Do I need to do anything differently during the day? It’s important for everyone to dress and behave appropriately during the Holy Month. Even those who aren’t fasting should make sure that their clothes are modest, covering shoulders, chest and knees. Keep music levels down to a minimum and, of course, no public displays of affection.

Ramadan glossary IFTAR The meal at sunset when Muslims break their daytime fast SUHOOR Technically the meal before sunrise before Muslims start fasting. Much more laid back than iftar, suhoor often starts late at night and runs into the early hours of the morning
