THE CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED FILM DIRECTOR

When did you realise that film was your passion?

Oh, I was very young. Growing up I was obssessed with films, watching an average of three a day. While most children were watching Disney, I was mesmerised by black and white dance scenes from Asian films.

How supportive is your family?

Watching films excessively worried them but being a filmmaker was the ultimate fear.

They absolutely detested it, but as you can see, I followed the storytelling line. Eventually they saw that the process offered more benefits than harm. They succumbed in the end.

As the UAE’s first female film director, is there a lot of pressure to succeed?

There is a lot of pressure being a woman in film in the world.

The pressure is tripled here as we do not have a robust film industry. What we have is

Who are you, and what made you famous?

I’m the first Emirati women film director in the UAE. Not sure about ‘famous’ but I definitely try to leave a mark 12_What’s On

The last time I shot a film for National Day we had 198 musicians, I was pregnant and nauseous, but kept directing with all my might.

The film is still many people’s favourite.

Have you lived in Dubai all your life?

I’m 43 and have lived in Dubai for 38 years. The other five I spent studying film in Toronto.

I grew up watching the city take shape. My family home was in Mirdif but back then no one had heard of it – we had to deflate our tires to cross dunes to our house.

a film movement, so to have my big breakthrough was so important to me. But with that comes pressure to make it.

Your newest film has been picked up by the BBC. How does that make you feel?

Fantastic. Animal [the title of

the film] also won best film at the Milan Film Festival from amongst over 70 entries and got me a seat at the Cannes Producers’ Network. The BBC was the cherry on the cake.

Tell us about the film Animal is about narcissistic personalities who have an incredible grip on our world.

It’s based on my siblings’ childhood. The film is about a little girl who isn’t allowed to have pets so she hides her new rabbit only to find out that it was dinner. Making films is a kind of therapy for me, albeit an expensive one.

What are some of your proudest achievements?

Winning best film in Milan and also having my concept cherished by Hotel Rwanda director Terry George, who’s adapting it into an international mini series. I will be the executive producer and may potentially direct a few episodes.

What do you love about the UAE? I love its tenacity and its spirit for creating and pushing for excellence. It’s empire building, and that’s exciting for anyone who is pioneering.

What stresses you out about the UAE? Shooting in 50-degree heat for 12 hours straight; people ferociously tailgating; and seeing my hair frizz after a wonderful blow-dry.

Do you reckon Dubai is your forever home?

Of course, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is breathtakingly beautiful, but for an alternative culture fix that you haven’t visited every single time your family or friends are in town, we recommend hopping across the Grand Canal to the more understated, but equally gorgeous, Bani Hashim Mosque. Adorned with a sparkling gold dome and gorgeous blue and turquoise engravings, it’s a super impressive and intricate example of Islamic architecture.

Al Wathba Long Salt Lake Admittedly, more and more people have started to flock here over the last few months. But still, only the truly dedicated Abu Dhabi explorers have seen this utterly sensational, Insta-worthy attraction in person. Boasting crystal clear, azure waters dotted with ethereal, mushroom-shaped salt formations, it almost looks like it was purposefully made for a photo shoot. But no, whilst the channel that holds Al Wathba Long Salt Lake might be manmade, the striking floating islands of sodium chloride are totally natural. Hopping from one to the other is a thrill like you’ve never known, but please tread carefully and take care not to damage them. This mesmerising lagoon is only about an hour’s drive from downtown Abu Dhabi, and while you’re there you may as well check out the slightly more famous, and just as otherworldly, Fossil Dunes formations. ING TOP-SECRET FLOAT MOUNDS OF SAND

Kashta Rental Boats Calm, bright blue and green waters, untouched white sands and not another soul to be seen for miles around; no, this isn’t the Maldives we’re describing, it’s actually the mystical, and exceptionally gorgeous, sand bank islands of Saadiyat Island. Never heard of them? Well, that’s not too surprising considering that these idyllic, top-secret floating mounds of sand only appear at certain times of day when the tide is low.

But don’t worry, you don’t have to become an expert on the patterns and movements of the Arabian Gulf to find them. Instead, you can enlist the help of the brilliant seafarers at Kasha boat rental service, who know the waters surrounding Saadiyat Island like the back of their hands. They’ll take you and four pals out to the islands at precisely the right time (normally early morning during the summer), and provide chairs, an umbrella, water and a kayak.

Then, once you’ve taken as many photos as your phone can handle, they’ll pick you up and take you back. Moon Island Resort Formerly called Happiness Island, we first went to Moon when it was a somewhat rough-and-ready party spot. But now, the crescent-shaped resort has rebranded as a family-friendly, classy hideaway that comes complete with an infinity pool, swim-up bar and private beach.

Very high steaks at SLS Dubai ever have we experienced a steakhouse with as much personality as Carna.

The ambiance is bubbling with excitement as we arrive, and the DJ has already begun spinning some upbeat house classics as we get comfy within our half booth, beneath a huge olive tree.

Created under the watchful eye of famous butcher Dario Cecchini, Carna Dubai offers more than just steak at its SLS venue. The 74thfloor spot provides incredible city views.

Understated chandeliers hang above the dining room, bouncing light off a huge steak mural hung on the back wall.

We began with a classic prawn cocktail (Dhs120). Served on crushed

ice, marinated jumbo prawns arrive with their tails on, sharing their bed with fresh greens and a spicy tomato feta dipping sauce. We drizzle lemon all over and wolf them down.

We also try Dario’s signature steak tartare (Dhs82), lured in by the promise of truffle aioli. It’s prepared for us on tiny toast and the garlicky goodness is just as tasty as we’d hoped. The flavours are well balanced, both rich and crunchy.

Before our steaks arrive, we’re asked to pick our ‘weapon’. The request might seem obscure, but a fancy box opens with a range of steak knives as we proudly pretend to know what the difference is between each.

Truth be told, we don’t even need a sharp knife to cut the Hokkaido beef tenderloin (Dhs375 for 120g) as the Japanese A5 grade meat slides apart like butter. It’s rich and flavourful, with a crispy seared edge. Each slice of beef is a treat.

While the Japanese beef is an ideal choice for meat connoisseurs, for those who prefer a more traditional steak, the NY strip steak marbling score 7 (Dhs360 for 300g) is perfect. The meat is 450 days grain fed and tastes great with a sprinkling of coarse salt. We requested

it medium rare, and it came perfect pink inside with a layer of juicy fat on one edge.

While the restaurant is buzzing with activity, the staff are more than happy to stop and have a chat and make recommendations. It’s these little authentic moments that make a restaurant truly great.

Baked Alaska (Dhs60) is our final dish of the evening, and it’s a thing of beauty. A mountain of ice cream wrapped in torched mallow sits atop refreshing blueberry sorbet.

If there’s one thing Dubai isn’t short of it’s Japanese restaurants. So, is there room for one more? ubai’s appetite for Japanese cuisine knows no bounds.

From the highfalutin likes of Zuma and Hoseki, to the authentic temples of Kohantei and Kimura-Ya, we’re never far from our next sushi roll or sliver of wagyu. Which begs the question: have we reached peak sashimi?

The team at Ikigai are leaving nothing to chance. The latest project from Reif Othman and The First Group, this sleek izakaya-style restaurant and bar in Dubai Marina ticks all your modJapanese boxes. You’ve got your sultry setting with sculptural light fittings, graffiti murals, neon signage and an industrial-chic edge.

There’s a showpiece central bar pouring sake and yuzuspiked cocktails.

And then there’s wafer-thin slices of winter the menu, loaded melon, dabs of kimchi puree, with tricked up and discs of cumquat for a gentle Chef Reif Othman Japanese street foods bittersweet tang that enhances the that are perfect for sharing delicate fish. Clever stuff. over a drink.

A round of applause or a slow hand clap for this new dinner and a show concept in DIFC? inner and a show – a fairly self-explanatory concept – has been gaining popularity in Dubai over the last few months, with more and more residents enjoying the idea of food with a side of entertainment. While some are bold and brash, others are more artistic, shining a light on effortless talent.

La Casa Del Tango falls into the latter bracket. Set-up by professional Tango dancer, Enrique Macana, the cast features flown-in Argentinian dancers and musicians, to ensure the show is of the highest standards.

The venue, however, is a little confusing.

The stage is located down the far end of the restaurant, but the booths face into the

middle, so you’ll need to crick your neck to see the show. Even then, shows only takes place on weekends, but are told this will be extended to more days in the coming months. If you do visit on a weekend, you’ll be treated to segments of dramatic performances that break up the evening in exciting fashion, as skilled dancers effortlessly whisk their way around the stage.

Meanwhile, the prospect of an authentically Latin American menu to accompany the show was exciting and we started with the chorizo parrillero with provolone (rolled sausage with cheese, Dhs100). It was pleasant entrée and satisfied our queso cravings. We also tried the beef empanadas (Dhs40), a traditional pasty-like fried snack, which was accompanied by a small bowl of relishm although sadly not enough to mask the dry texture of the filling.

Next, we opt for the beef Milanese (Dhs120), a simple dish served with a layer of tomato sauce over breaded meat and topped with grated cheese.

Across the board, presentation was lacklustre.

The bife ancho (Dhs250) steak, which was juicy enough, arrived with just a sprinkling of salt and chimmi churri in a bowl while the chunky chips are dumped in another bowl.

Our final dish, chocolate molten cake (Dhs45), came in a slightly prettier bowl, but after the waiter poured sweet custard over the top, we felt like a kid at a birthday party.

Not for the fainthearted, Taikun sizzles with its new dinner and a show rovocateur is the befitting name of Taikun’s Friday night dinner and a show experience. The talented cast of singers and dancers aim to get pulses racing with a three-hour multi-act set of captivating performances – at times you can’t take your eyes off the stage, and at times you don’t know where to look.

White-clothed tables are set up like a late-night cabaret bar, positioned towards the heavy red velvet curtains, which seep with smoke whenever the next act is about to begin. Whether it’s a semiclothed male dance duo moving in sync, or a powerhouse vocalist in a floor length dress, expect to be wowed each time the curtains part.

As we refocus our attention to our own table, well-presented dishes begin to arrive, starting with a huge sushi platter (Dhs550) billowing with dry ice. The combination of expertly rolled maki, fresh sashimi and tasty nigiri makes for the ideal way to start a meal.

Dishes are served sharing-style, and for the mains we’re presented with a panseared salmon in a ginger teriyaki sauce (Dhs170); juicy and tender, the fish is a great option for those who don’t want to feel heavy after a big meal.

The grilled wagyu striploin (Dhs320) is equally as delicious; offering sizeable slices of perfectly pink meat, dripping in beef jus and topped with grilled yellow capsicum.

When you can’t decide what to have for dessert, a platter is always a safe choice.

Priced at Dhs220, it serves three or more with two desserts (including an indulgent chocolate fondant) and a selection of mochi, fresh fruits and yet more dry ice.

THE BEACH HOUSE POOL DAY You voted it as your favourite Seafood Restaurant at the What’s On Awards in May. Does it still reign supreme?

e don’t know what it is about summer, but it tends to have us stepping away from our usual brunch hotspots in search of a more laid-back way to spend our weekends. One favourite – as voted for by you – is a day spent at the luxury Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort. This Thai-inspired resort offers proper holiday feels, with its varied restaurants and hotel rooms that lead directly into the lagoon pool.

The Beach House, meanwhile, is the resort’s beautiful Mediterranean restaurant that sits adjacent to the pool, facing towards the beach. It’s best to grab a spot outside underneath the white, sundappled canopy (which has huge fans to beat the heat).

The menu is varied, with an array of fresh salads and seafood such as crispy calamari, ‘from the stone’ pizzas, hearty

mains and pastas. The calorie indication on the menu had us forgoing our normal trusty pizza weekend treat in favour of a healthier option: the grilled salmon with harissa, broccoli, coriander, yoghurt and romesco sauce.

The guilt-free dish is delicious with crispy salted skin (Dhs140) and a flavour-packed sauce, however, with only a handful of cherry tomatoes and three pieces of broccolini. Fortunately, we still get our pizza fix with a slice of our dining partner’s wagyu beef chorizo, which was glistening, gooey and gorgeous.

Mimi Kakushi Is this the Japanese brunch of dreams?

We’ve made it no secret that we’re fans of Mimi Kakushi, the elegant ‘20s-inspired Japanese restaurant nestled within the Restaurant Village at Four Seasons Jumeirah Resort. We’ve waxed lyrical about its décor, service and unique dishes, so we were delighted about the launch of its weekend brunch. As suspected, it’s a sleek and sophisticated affair for a Friday brunch, which runs from 1pm to 4pm (with the same deal running on Saturdays, too).

After whetting our appetite with the zingy pickled yuzu daikon and steamed edamame with maldon sea salt, the cold starters arrive.

The sushi and maki roll platters are good but not ground-breaking. More exciting is the plate of salmon tataki, which offers an explosion of flavours aided by jalapeño relish and crispy onion. Meanwhile, the beef tataki is served with a generous helping of truffle ponzu that certainly elevates the dish.

We’re delighted to see both the black cod and prawn gyozas as part of the hot

starters. These dainty little parcels are some of the best items on the a la carte menu, and remain firm favourites, particularly the black cod, which oozes umami flavours. We were less impressed by the yakitori chicken thigh and kushi Angus beef skewers, however, which were a little overdone.

Onto the mains, and the miso black cod is tender, flaky white fish with a delicate Asian piquancy. The salmon is also tasty with a delicious green chilli sauce, however next time we would go for a meat dish, such as the grilled Angus fillet, for a little more variety.

If you’re looking for a ‘party’ brunch, this isn’t it. It is, however, a brilliant spot for a long, laid-back lunch.

A lively and colourful spot with a vibe that’s drawing a crowd There aren’t too many places where you’ll find an authentic Cuban experience in Dubai. With a cigar lounge, rum bar, Havana-inspired murals, and a menu of Caribbean food, Rumba Cuban Bar & Kitchen aims to provide just that.

Rumba recently opened at Palm Jumeirah’s Club Vista Mare, offering ocean views, beachside seating and a huge indoor space perfect for the summer. The devil is in the detail, from the set designlike interiors transporting you to the streets of Cuba, to the napkins rolled up like cigars.

Waitstaff are dressed like dancers, and they skirt around the fully booked bar when we arrive.

One side of the venue offers a casual seating area with high tables against a large Havana painting. Thick velvet curtains separate it from the main dining area, where arch windows have been installed with flower bays, genuinely making us forget that we’re on the shores of a man-made island in the UAE. The menu is designed like an old sepia newspaper. Many of the dishes are in Spanish, so we pester the team for suggestions on what to try. The croquetas

(Dhs65) were a great choice, oozing with warm cheese around smoked veal, turkey ham pieces encased in a crunchy breadcrumb coating and dipped in aioli.

A large section of the menu is dedicated to cocktails, as well as 27 different types of rum. No matter what your preference in terms of beverages, the team are prepared to whip up something you’re bound to like.

We were very impressed by the tacos de pescado (Dhs85), because they were packed with flavour. Not holding back on the filling, each soft tortilla taco has a large piece of battered fish, slices of avocado, tasty coleslaw and drizzled with chipotle mayo.

If you’re into guacamole, Rumba’s signature version (Dhs89) is a must-try. Topped with skirt steak, cotija cheeese and light-asair chips, we couldn’t help but to keep reaching back for another mouthful.

A surf and turf showdown every Saturday e’re hardly the first to pit turf against surf, but Catch at St. Regis hopes to make it the best fight yet. On a steamy Saturday night, we headed for St. Regis, cruised past the small crowd at the Catch bar and were ushered to our seats for the big showdown: wagyu vs sushi.

We were quickly brought an icy welcome drink that was as beautiful as it was refreshing. The elixir’s floral yuzu aroma paired with passionfruit started the evening on a high note.

Small plates of tapas arrived to whet the appetite. Standout was an unusually piquant bowl of edamame seasoned with yuzu salt. A wholesome salad of mixed greens and avocado followed. They

were nice but merely featherweights – the air was thick with anticipation for the headliners.

After a slight pause, a heavy- hitting sushi boat arrived overflowing with dry ice to heighten the drama.

We were blown away by the blow torch dynamite rolls.

The salmon bites encased in crispy fried seaweed and rice paper served with a hefty dollop of creamy crab mayo absolutely knocked us out.

The beef follows as a main, and it’s well worth the wait. Sure, the sushi boat was a tough act to follow but what the wagyu lacks in style, it more than makes up for in substance. It arrives perched on a ceramic Hitachi grill to keep it warm. With truffle beef jus and Cajun wedges on this side, this battle of fire and ice is unlikely to be settled tonight because both Catch’s

sushi and wagyu are simply too different and good respectively to judge. It would be hard to top the dining action with a dessert, but Catch managed.

We were presented with an assortment of some of the tastiest mochi we’ve ever had. The outer layer of the mochi is a soft, pounded sticky rice cake and filled with different flavours of ice cream on the inside. Our favourites were the yuzu and mango.

VERDICT: Catch’s offerings wear freshness and unexpected flavours like a crown. If you can catch a Wagyu Vs. Trip with Vakava A new brunch for foodies and fiesta hunters

race yourself, brunchers: The new Trip with Vakava Friday brunch is a long brunch (five hours’ long in fact), and a great one to employ a brunching strategy. Why? Because it would be very easy to do this one all wrong.

This ‘table brunch’ is for anyone who prefers table service and enjoys ample sharing plates.

The first three hours involve a server bringing you plate after plate of South American cuisine while you imbibe and chat with friends. There’s also a roving bar cart serving madeto-order drinks. Though they’re fun and inspired concoctions, they’re a bit on the overly sweet side.

The house drinks package options are limited, but they complement the food well enough. The service is excellent, which is a marked difference from previous experiences here. You also have 52_What’s On

the option to order extra portions of the dishes you loved, so you feel as though you’ve got your money’s worth with both the food and drink.

The menu changes twice a month so try not to get your heart set on any dish you’ve read about here or elsewhere. But one standard dish is Vakava’s amazing zingy guacamole because no selfrespecting fiesta takes flight without guac and chips. In rapid succession, hot and cold starters arrived.

Standouts were the scallops tiradito, beef tenderloin skewers and the crispy prawns.

After a short respite, the mains began to fill the table, which never seemed quite large enough for all the food. Steak with

chimichurri sauce and a delicious sea bass infused with lemongrass, ginger and miso led the way for the mains, followed by potatoes three ways and a zesty fava bean salad. Later, an explosion of flavours arrived in the form of Vakava’s rotating dessert menu and a fresh food platter.

The Trip’s timing couldn’t be more perfect for those looking to extend their fiesta into the evening. Vakava has erased those awkward Friday hours after brunching by having the food served from 2pm to 5pm in the restaurant. Meanwhile, the fiesta carries on upstairs on the terrace with sundowners until 7pm. You can go well into the night with this brunch if you do it right.

VERDICT: We arrived at Trip with Vakava expecting a brunch but found a fiesta. The food, service, beverages and atmosphere are sure crowd pleasers. The art of NFTs

UAE-based platform MORROW collective launches virtual reality gallery ART

B

y now, you must have heard about NFTs but to make it simple, we can describe an NFT as a digital code that makes something unique. It sits on the blockchain meaning that code cannot be changed or forged and, because of that, it is changing the way creative products are changing hands.

Musicians and artists can now protect

their copyright, and make an income by selling their works as NFTs and collectors are going crazy over owning these new digital assets. But how do you go about getting into it? Enter MORROW collective.

They are a new UAE-based platform, working with artists and galleries to turn traditional pieces of art into NFTs. Once those digital artworks are created, the team at MORROW have a massive, and pretty cool, virtual reality gallery where they display the pieces in curated exhibitions, so that it looks and feels like you are standing in a real-life art museum (well, almost).

The software used for this gallery is gaming software and the technical term for where it sits online is the ‘metaverse’. For those MORROW founders: Artist Jennifer Stelco, curator and art writer Anna Seaman and communications director Claire Harris into gaming, this won’t

sound weird but for everyone else let us explain. The metaverse is a universe of interconnected virtual worlds where you move around as an avatar and interact with other avatars around the world. So, when you walk into the art gallery, you may see people from all over the world in the same space.

What’s cool about the MORROW gallery is that next to every artwork there is text that explains the story behind it and then, if you want to know more or even buy the work, there are click through buttons.

MORROW launched in May with its inaugural exhibition Genesis.

This month, some pieces from that show will be on display in Firetti Contemporary, a new gallery in Alserkal Avenue. The exhibition will display NFTs on screens side-byside with the real-life artworks, in collaboration with Techgnosis. It is a meeting of the digital and the physical worlds, which makes it truly unique.

Tell us about the exhibition: MORROW prides itself on substance and narrative, bringing compelling stories from around the world into one space.

The Genesis exhibition is divided into five sections: Portraits & Faces; Abstract; Lifestyle & Consciousness; War & Conflict; and Loss & Nostalgia. The idea is that by placing artworks from different regions, different backgrounds and different styles next to each other, the viewer will see new perspectives.

Why did you start MORROW collective?

Myself and Jen Stelco (co-founder) have been involved in the art world for more than a decade and we know the value of curation and substance. We love and respect artistic concept as well as the months and years that can go into the creation of a piece of art. When we began to explore NFTs, we found that there was little in the way of quality control. There are some websites that attempt to vet artists before letting them in but in general, the market is flooded with art that hasn’t already been through the eyes of a curator. We wanted to change that, so we launched MORROW, that works alongside galleries to present their art as NFTs in our large virtual reality gallery.

Why does this signal a huge shift in the art world?

NFTs have already revolutionised the way art is bought and sold. The blockchain technology allows for complete transparency meaning that provenance, fraud and ownership are no longer an issue. Also, with platforms that exist in virtual reality and can be accessed from all over the world, the NFT world also breaks down geographical borders. At MORROW, we are working with galleries who already represent talented and well-developed artists and are giving them a hassle-free route into the crypto world, meaning that everyone benefits: the artists, the galleries and the audience.

Flash Entertainment continues its quest to champion musical talent in the region. Next up: Moh Flow

T

he first time What’s On saw Moh Flow perform was back in 2014. It was in a beautiful open air, makeshift space inside Safa Park. A handful of the UAE’s top up-andcoming musicians performed to a small community of music lovers. In the line-up was a young Syrian rapper, already with a tightknit fanbase. When he took the stage, he captivated the audience with his rapping, caramel smooth vocals, and rich melodies. Fast forward a few years and Moh Flow has transformed into a regionally adored hip-hop artist, carving his own unique sound that’s seen him perform on the biggest stages in the UAE, including the newly renamed Etihad Park when he opened for Marshmello at the Yasalam After-Race Concerts in 2019.

He’s collaborated with numerous artists in the region, too, including legendary American rapper Pusha-T, and continues to drop fresh new tracks all worth adding to your summer playlists.

How did you first get into music?

When I was young, I gravitated to music watching my older brother A’Y independently make music for the better part of my childhood. As I grew up, I started wanting to become

a part of that circle.

I focused on figuring out how to record, download beats online, and write songs from scratch. It started with a few covers of my favourite rappers (mostly Lupe Fiasco), then I began to write my own songs.

How would you describe the music that you make?

It’s hard for me to categorise, simply for the fact that I sing and I rap. I have touched on genres like hip-hop, R&B, EDM, house, Afro, and some of the sub-genres that exist under those. I like to make music from renewed emotions that I connect with.

Who are the artists, or people, who inspire you?

The thing about inspiration

for me is that I don’t have to necessarily see somebody blaze a trail that I can relate to for them to inspire me. I see inspiration in anyone who has been able to utilise very little to build a movement or something of value.

What are your latest musical accomplishments?

My perspective on accomplishments, in general,

“IT STARTED WITH A FEW COVERS, THEN I SLOWLY BEGAN TO WRITE MY OWN SONGS” has changed over time. I’ve gotten the virtual head nod from a lot of artists I’ve looked up to since I was a kid. I’ve opened up for legendary artists, and I’ve collaborated with some of my favourite brands along my journey. Aside from all of that, I’m most proud of keeping my catalogue somewhat relevant through the saturation of music online. I’m most proud of my core base of listeners. At the end of the day, we want our art to be listened to as far and wide as humanly possible.

What is your creative process like? Has it changed since the pandemic?

My creative process has always been an isolated one. I like to create in a very centred space and rarely go out of my comfort zone to create. I work with my production team, and I think

we have solidified a process, or a few iterations of our process, that always helps us produce records that we can pitch in creatively on.

Where have you performed? What was your favourite venue to perform at?

I’ve been blessed with a lot of moments on monumental stages. I’ve enjoyed every show from the arenas to the low-ceiling venues. SOB’s, Sole DXB, and du Arena (now Etihad Park) would have to be in my top five.

What are your latest releases? What is the story behind them?

Coming off of my last project, ‘Faith,’ which was more of an R&B effort, I wanted to go into an unfiltered space. During the pandemic, I was leaning towards a particular style of instrumentation concept.

I was in the mental space

to vent, so I used these records to touch on recent real-life situations on top of aggressive drums and spacey melodies. Records like ‘Til Infinity’ and ‘Wave’ were the hero records for me, while ‘Level Up’ and ‘Ghost’ may be the people’s favourites.

Which one of these releases is your favourite and why?

My favourite would always be ‘Til Infinity.’ Everything about this record represents the last 18 months of my life. I love these records because they represent a moment in time for me. TI represented a jaded and frustrated side of me that I could only vent about on these records. Speaking my truth in music is the only reason these records mean anything to me.

Are you working with any other artists right now?

I’ve got some music coming with Ayo Wani, Menon, Omar Basaad, Narcy, and a couple of other artists that I love.

What is an average day like for you?

My day-to-day life revolves around running Hrmny, a creative agency I co-founded with Majeed (Jeed) and Ayham (A’Y) in 2017. That’s

my everyday focus during working hours and beyond.

I dedicate time to my craft, and everything that comes with it, when the sun comes down. I’m generally more in tune with music at a later part of my day. I also play a lot of basketball; you could find me on a court in Dubai on any given weeknight.

What does being part of Regional Artist Spotlight mean to you?

I’m humbled to be a part of this community of creatives, and I look forward to discovering more artists through this platform. The more outlets the kids see, the more art they will make.

I just want more kids that look and speak like me to tell their stories through art.

How deep is Deep Dive Dubai?

It’s officially 60.02m deep, which has been recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s deepest swimming pool for diving. That’s the equivalent of 11 giraffes.

I’m quite scared to do it. Is Deep Dive Dubai safe?

Ask any of the professional staff on site and they’ll tell you that safety is at the core of everything they do. The facility is covered by 56 in-water cameras monitoring the safety of all participants. Divers are also accompanied by highly trained guides. There are lifeguards and rescue divers on guard at all times, while all the equipment is maintained according to strict industry standards.

Your first experience with freediving and scuba diving can begin at 10 years, and there’s no maximum age limit, either.

Not unless you can display proof of training from a recognised agency showing specific qualifications.

To be honest, a lot of the fun stuff happens in shallower waters.

Is there any marine life in Deep Dive Dubai?

Nope, Deep Dive Dubai is not an aquarium. There are loads of objects, props and exciting environments to explore, but no sharks or other animals.

Do I need to have all my own gear?

All you need to bring is a swimsuit and flip flops.

Admission fees include a full set of equipment so there is no need to bring any dive gear at all. The swanky dressing rooms are fully stocked with towels and toiletries.

How much is it, and how long is the experience?

Admission fees start at Dhs400, but expect to pay Dhs1,500 for a ‘Discover’ scuba dive. It’s approximately two hours total for the experience. This includes getting your gear and briefings.

It varies from diver to diver, but you can expect to be underwater for around 30 to 40 minutes.

Can I sign up for diving courses at Deep Dive Dubai?

Oh yes! Deep Dive Dubai offers almost the entire selection of courses from PADI and GUE (Global Underwater Explorers).

he last year has changed many things, and for some of us, that includes how we exercise. With capacities at gyms reduced and many restrictions still in place, lots of us have switched to home workouts, or discovered/come back to running, walking or cycling in the fresh air.

Mim Kleiberg, coowner of THE ROOM Abu Dhabi, explains why the studio continues to offer a mix of virtual and physical classes.

“Most of our members do a combination of in-studio and online classes; it just provides a bit more flexibility. Our capacity is a lot less than it used to be (17 per class), so it’s great that they can still jump online and join us even if the class is fully booked, if they don’t have time to drive here and back or even if they’re travelling overseas. We also rent out our spin bikes (Dhs299 a month) and other equipment to use in the online classes.

When we first reopened, I think some people were nervous about coming back to the studio but now we have very few members who are exclusively training online. I’m often told we’re one of the strictest gyms for following the rules and the lower capacity actually means that you get better value because you have more one-on-one attention.”

It would be criminal to visit Athens and not take the walk up to the Acropolis – the high hill, which is visible from almost everywhere in the city. Even if you’re not a Greek history buff, to stand in the shadows of the Parthenon, with its huge marble pillars, is an experience in itself. Once you’ve caught your breath, take a walk down to the hillside neighbourhood of Plaka, which sits in the shadow of the Acropolis. Plaka is filled with narrow, colourful, cobbled streets, that zig-zag down the mountain. You’ll find lovely little cafes, where you can perch on steps and watch the world go by.

WAKE UP HERE

For city-centre living, the fourstar Coco-Mat hotel, located in Kolonaki, the capital’s most highend district, is a wonderful base for exploring. Its cosy, with deliriously comfortable beds, but won’t break the bank. It’s also a short walk to the city centre. But, if you don’t mind being further away, The Margi, located along the Athenian Riviera is a tempting alternative to staying in the city. If you’re all walked-out, take a breather at the glorious Lake Vouliagmeni, the Athenians version of a high-end lido. The lake sits at the base of a huge cliff and is connected to the sea underground and fed by hot springs, which means the water temperature rarely dips below 24°C.
