This bundle costs Dhs599 for adults and Dhs499 for children between 4 and 17 years of age, while kids aged three and under go free.

Make your money go further as you ride the world’s fastest rollercoaster at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, meet your favourite DC Superheroes at Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, and make a mighty splash at Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi with the Abu Dhabi Summer Pass. Soak up the emirate’s rich cultural scene with one-day entry to Louvre Abu Dhabi, and also get free or discounted access to 13 cultural sites across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, including Qasr Al Hosn, Qasr Al Watan, Al Ain Palace Museum, and Al Jahili Fort. From top staycations, to perfect pool days and thrilling indoor fun, here’s how to summer like you mean it in Abu Dhabi...

FAMILY FUN Ferrari World Abu Dhabi If you want bragging rights to having tackled the world’s fastest roller coaster, you have to visit this indoor shrine to speed. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is home to record-breaking roller coasters, a connoisseur’s collection of classic cars, family-friendly thrill rides, a huge zip-line and roof-walk adventure attraction and a series of fun festivals throughout the year. @ferrariworldabudhabi

Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi The What’s On Award-winning attraction is a summer must-do for all, where your favourite superheroes (and villains), Tom, Jerry, Bugs, Daffy, Tweetie, and The Flintstones are all backed up by some spectacularly wild rides, and expertly choreographed shows. @wbworldad

The National Aquarium When it’s all looking a bit scorchy outside, why not head to Abu Dhabi’s stunning underwater kingdom, The National Aquarium? In addition to the eight themed zones, an XXL reticulated python known only as ‘Super Snake’, back stage tours, and marine animal rehabilitation projects, there are also a range of marine life meet and greets. You can, for example, have an ‘Ocean Encounter’ feeding sharks measuring up to two metres in length for just Dhs180. And that price includes access to the ‘Aquarium Journey’. thenationalaquarium.ae

LIVE IT UP Island fun at Saadiyat Beach Club If you’ve got sunshine on your mind, then Saadiyat Beach Club is the place to be this season. The luxury beach club is including a special offer of Dhs399 instead of Dhs499 for its weekend brunch, plus day pass access exclusively for Visit Abu Dhabi Pass holders.

The royal treatment at Emirates Palace The summer weekday pool pass at Emirates Palace is the perfect way to spend a day. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque This architectural work of art is one of the world’s largest mosques, but it’s also arguably the most beautiful, too. Just a moment here and you’re transported to a land of spirituality and dreams. It’s a breathtaking sight. szgmc.gov.ae

Louvre Abu Dhabi The museum is made up of multiple interconnected gallery spaces nestled beneath a vast perforated dome that allows shafts of sunlight to penetrate the open areas. Its unique structure is just as breathtaking as the art within the museum itself and is one of the most important sights for visitors and residents to visit. Be sure to look out for the exciting yoga classes that take place under the dome. louvreabudhabi.ae

8_What’s On

…but it’s certainly not the least important. Sure, it’s easy to fill up on savouries and pass on the sweet stuff when out for a meal. And truth be told, that’s usually not a bad call because desserts can sometimes be an afterthought for certain chefs and restaurants. However, the places celebrated in this issue devote as much care and creativity to the end of the meal as they do to the start. Turn to page 14 for six, sickly-sweet pages of glorious, coma-inducing desserts, from oh-so chocolatey fondants to terrific tiramisus. Diabetics, look away now. Speaking of sweet endings, this will be my last editor’s letter. My eight years at What’s On – and four as its editor – have been a party, an adventure and an honour. Thank you to my fabulous bunch of UAE-loving, hard-working, meme-creating, TikTok starring team who have made working here over the years so sweet: there really is no better crew in the business. Enjoy this issue, and all future issues. I certainly will.

Enjoying an unhurried brunch… at Reif Kushiyaki

THIS MONTH WHAT’S ON LOVES…

Sure, breakfast is great. It’s the jumpstart meal, a tone-setter for the rest of your day. It should be about enjoying the dishes that a restaurant has to offer, rather than drinking the bar dry. That’s why Reif’s new brunch is right up my alley. The recently awarded Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand restaurant has launched a new brunch set menu, available Friday to Sunday from noon to 5pm, with over 30 all-time favourite dishes, including sashimi, gyoza and the ever wonderful nasi lemak. Priced at Dhs238, this dry brunch zeros in on great quality food, and it’s fantastic. @reifkushiyaki – Laura Coughlin, Head of Content

Reaching peak Dubai with laundry service from… 5asec One of the best things about Dubai is how there’s a home service for (almost) everything. With two weeks of holiday washing to get through, I called on 5asec to help get the bulk of my laundry done. Order via phone or WhatsApp, and it arranges collection from your house at a time to suit you. There’s even a bag and shoe cleaning service for keeping your accessories in check. Within 36 hours of collection, everything was back, perfectly cleaned and pressed. @5asecuae – Alice Holtham, Group Digital Editor

Ordering myself some new skincare from… Peach I do love a homegrown brand, so when I heard about a new UAE-based e-commerce store called Peach, my ears pricked up. Based in Abu Dhabi, the online store curates cool beauty brands and harder-to-find products and delivers them to your door the very next day. Perfect for stocking up your beauty cabinet, I’m on the hunt for a new moisturiser and am super excited to check out Peach’s range of products. @peach.ae – Elise Kerr, Deputy Editor

Checking out the new ice bar at… The London Project Even though I was born and raised in Dubai, the summer heat is something I’m just not used to. So, when The London Project announced that it was opening a new ice bar, I knew I had to check it out. Guests find themselves in a simulation of an ice castle with ice penguin sculptures. It’s the first-ever licensed ice bar in the GCC, with unique cocktails and dishes. They’ll even give you faux fur coats to stay warm. Plus, turn to page 62 to win passes to the ice bar. @thelondonprojectdubai – Aarti Saundalkar, Online Reporter

Basking in the glory of being quiz champs at… Reform Social & Grill The What’s On office recently took on the weekly Reform Social & Grill quiz. I’d love to say ‘it’s not the winning that counts, it’s the taking part’, but I’d be lying. The theme was ‘vintage TV game shows’ — with rounds modelled on the likes of Blockbusters and Catchphrase. We emerged victorious, thoroughly stuffed and almost certainly despised by everybody else in the room. Exactly like the end of a game of Trivial Pursuit should be. @reformdubai — Miles Buckeridge, Senior Online Reporter What’s On_9

NATASHA SIDERIS Q U E E N O F C U L I N A RY

How would you sum up your experience in the UAE in three words? Intense. Amazing. Enlightening. What does a typical day look like for you? As soon as I wake up, I go to the gym. It has become an important part of my life and is key to making sure I maintain clarity as well as my energy levels throughout the day. My typical day consists of both in-person and video meetings about interior design, marketing, menu design and food tastings. I always try to get to one or two of our stores during the day, to check in with our teams and our guests as I love being on the floor. It is always invigorating. At the end of the day, I collapse in a heap and get up and do it all over again. Life inside a restaurant is pretty hectic, what do you like to do outside of work? I am very committed to my health. I do cryotherapy, cold

AE Famous is a What’s On page focusing on people out there making the scene. They’re out there around town, shaping the UAE into what it is, creating the culture, food and life around us. We asked them what’s good in the UAE. We asked them what’s bad in the UAE. We asked them to tell us more, more, more about their wonderful selves…

“IF YOU HAVE A GREAT IDEA AND ARE WILLING TO WORK HARD, THE POSSIBILITIES OF SUCCESS IN THE UAE ARE VERY HIGH” Who are you, and what made you famous? My name is Natasha Sideris. I am the founder and CEO of Tashas Group. I am not sure if you could call me famous but, if I am, it is because I am a passionate restaurateur and creator of a number of unique restaurant concepts including tashas, Avli by tashas, Flamingo Room by tashas, Galaxy Bar and Le Parc by tashas.

water immersion, massages, and play padel tennis. Travel is my biggest passion and I do it as often as I can. I love engaging with other cultures

– particularly with regard to food and design. I also love to watch movies. Who would be your dream customer? We have had many royal and famous people visit our restaurants. However, every customer is a dream customer regardless of fame. What’s been your biggest achievement so far? I think my biggest achievement thus far has been successfully exporting our business from South Africa to the UAE while, at the same time, building such a dynamic and amazing team in both countries. And your biggest challenge? Finding a balance between my personal life and my work life. What do you love about the UAE? If you have a great idea and are willing to work hard, the possibilities of success are very high. It’s a competitive environment that makes me want to push the envelope. I love the warmth and hospitality of the people as well. The safety, organisation and cleanliness of the UAE make for a fantastic lifestyle. What frustrates you about the UAE? The hot weather and if you miss a turn you add another 30 minutes to your drive. Do you think it will be your forever home? It’s hard to say. GET READY TO DIG INTO SOME OF THE MOST DECADENT, INDULGENT, BEAUTIFUL AND DROOL-WORTHY DESSERTS IN ABU DHABI 14_What’s On

BEST DESSERTS

ALL ABOUT THE CHOCOLATE Fondant aux chocolat

Where: Raclette When a rich, deeply chocolatey fondant is done right it’s hard to beat, and we think Raclette – king of the melt – offers one of the best. Its piping hot fondant aux chocolat (Dhs60) is served with a lick of raspberry coulis and topped with sweet vanilla ice cream, a crisp hazelnut croquant and torched meringue. q @racletteuae

Souffle cookie

Where: Paradiso Chef Hugo’s outdone himself with an exciting summer dessert menu, the highlight being this part souffle, part cookie beast (Dhs90). Using 72 per cent chocolate of Venezuelan origin and a pistachio parfait, it’s ultra-indulgent, and ultra-naughty. q @paradisoabudhabi

Praline mousse

Where: Coya Abu Dhabi With eight glorious options on Coya’s a la carte dessert menu, pick the best from a great bunch. Our favourite has to be its praline mousse (Dhs68). It’s a silky smooth, rich chocolate mousse, with praline, verbena, and a nostalgic white chocolate ice cream. Dreamy and decadent. q @coyaabudhabi What’s On_15

BEST DESSERTS

Cake & Sprinkles A patisserie pop-up at The Cultural Foundation features fun interactive artworks The Cultural Foundation is all about showcasing the heart and soul of the UAE. Sometimes that comes in the form of art or occasionally food, and in some rare but entirely welcome cases, a mixture of both. Cake & Sprinkles is a limited-time pop-up, popart patisserie serving cakes, coffee, ice cream and access to some stunning works of art from 25 UAE-based artists around the theme ‘the love of sweets’. There are also some interactive installations and fun-zones that look just perfect for a family day out. It’s all available to experience at Abu Dhabi’s Cultural Foundation until August 31 as part of a funpacked schedule of events under the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi’s (DCT Abu Dhabi) ‘Summer Like You Mean It’ campaign. Until August 31 a Cultural Foundation, Abu Dhabi, Sat to Thur 9am to 10pm, Fri 2pm to 10pm, free entry. culturalfoundation.ae

Oreo cheesecake and brownie mess

Where: Central What happens when you blend a cheesecake with a brownie? You make an almighty, calorific plate of goodness. Order yours from Central and expect a whopper of a dish with Oreo biscuits, baked cheesecake, fudgy chocolate brownie, chocolate sauce, and Oreo ice cream on the side (Dhs55). q @central_uae

Chocolate fondant

Where: Vakava Slightly more unusual than a regular chocolate lava cake is this fruitier option from South American stalwart Vakava at Conrad Etihad Towers. Its chocolate fondant (Dhs55) oozes with melted goodness and is served with vanilla ice cream with an orange reduction and added seasonal fruits. Picture perfect and delicious, too. q @vakavaabudhabi

PERFECT PASTRIES Mille-feuille

Where: The Lighthouse, Yas Bay This lovely dish is everything a great dessert should be: creamy and crunchy, sweet but not cloying, approachable yet decidedly more complex than it looks, and the mille-feuille (Dhs45) at The Lighthouse smashes it out the park (bay?). Layers of homemade pâte feuilletée (that’s fancy French for puff pastry) and vanilla custard are topped with mascarpone cream and garnished with powdered sugar and vanilla pods. Delicate yet delicious. q @thelighthouse_ae

Apple tart

Where: Fouquet’s Here’s a tip when you visit Fouquet’s, the What’s On Award-winning French restaurant at Louvre Abu Dhabi: order dessert first. The tarte aux pomme (Dhs120) takes 40 minutes to prepare but, boy, is it worth the wait. This thinly layered, freshly baked treat is served with whipped cream spiced with cinnamon and glazed with lemon caramel. q @fouquetsabudhabi

Pistachio bombolini

Where: Cipriani Dolci The Cipriani brand needs little in the way of introduction. The gourmet Italian power-dining powerhouse began in 1931 and in the 90 years since, Cipriani has developed into an international hospitality brand with venues around the world. One of its latest offshoots is Cipriani Dolci, a celebration of traditional Italian pasticcerias – glossy walnut by décor with swish service from waiters in white uniforms. This month, Cipriani Dolci is slated to open its third branch in Abu Dhabi’s Marina Mall. Diners will discover a menu of Cipriani classics, but it’s the glorious range of desserts and pastries that we can’t wait for. After many mouthfuls of the pistachio bombolini – enjoyed in the Dubai Mall outpost – we can say, without hesitation, that it is absolutely sensational. q @ciprianidolci

INTERNATIONAL DELICACIES Where: Sontaya Ah, the mango sticky rice. A Thai speciality that’s the perfect mix of complementary textures and flavours, with the sweet, ripe mango adding a juicy fruitiness to coconut milk-soaked sticky rice. We love The St Regis Saadiyat Island’s version at Sontaya (Dhs55), which promises all this in abundance with some added pandan sauce. q @stregissaadiyatisland

New York cheesecake

Where: Butcher & Still A real slice of New York cheesecake is smooth and sweet and ever-so-slightly tart and simply made: cream cheese, eggs, sugar, vanilla, heavy or sour cream. Our favourite version in the city is at Four Seasons’ steakhouse Butcher & Still. It’s a creamy, fluffy, berry-covered delight. q @butcherandstill

R

Where: Hanon Feras Sweets & Restaurant Phyllo dough, cheese, pistachios and rosewater syrup combine in this beautiful dessert that’s beloved in the Middle East, particularly by Palestinians. Order an enormous 4kg platter of it for Dhs300 from legendary confectioners Hanon Feras Sweets and you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. q @ferassweets

Mango sticky rice

Where: The Oak Room Forget counting calories with this wedge of wonder. Tom Aikens’ sticky toffee date pudding is loaded with light and dark sugar, together with salt, dates and butter before you even get near the clotted cream on the side. It is heavy and rich – possibly to die for. q @oakroomabudhabi

EXTRA ABU DHABI

Swanky pastries

Where: L’Éclair de Génie Inspired by a vintage circus tent, the first UAE branch of the Parisian pastry wonderland serves up creative sweet treats that almost look too perfect and posh to eat. This includes Abu Dhabi exclusives such as gold date eclairs (of course) and the mesmerising hot chocolate ball, a sensational creation that sees a 60 per cent chocolate sphere melt into a rich and creamy winter warmer, right in front of your eyes. q @leclairdegenie_uae

Dining (and dessert) in the dark

Where: Fresh-Basil Dining in the Dark How do you stand out from the crowd in a city so obsessed with luxury restaurants? You switch off the lights and give them nothing to admire at all. The first dining-in-thedark concept in Abu Dhabi is certainly an experience to remember, and while the menu can be adjusted to suit all tastes, you won’t actually find out what you’ve eaten until the very end. Even the staff have to wear nightvision goggles to ensure they don’t mistake your lap for the table. q @babalqasrhotel

Gold leaf ice cream Where: Emirates Palace If there’s ever a place to enjoy a gold leaf ice cream, it would be at Emirates Palace – the epitome of gilded glamour. And that theme continues throughout some of its restaurants’ menus, such as Le Cafe, where gold features in the most unlikely places, including its 23K gold-topped ice cream. q @emiratespalace

Cup Cake ATM

Where: Marsana, Hudayriyat Island This is exactly what it sounds like – a luxe vending machine that gives you access to Instalicious muffins, 24 hours a day. The ATM, located on adventure playground Hudayriyat Island, has a long list of cupcake varieties to deposit straight into your face. The pistachio and Nutella cake definitely has some big UAE energy, but you can also choose Oreo, saffron, lotus, blueberry, red velvet and carrot among others. Prices start from Dhs19. q @cupcake_atm What’s On_19

You have two choices in a UAE summer: you can head inside and soak up the chill of the air con, or you can head to the cool of the pool for some fun. Here’s a look at the latter*…

P O O L PA R T I E S

Cove Beach Abu Dhabi This location racks up a monster four-in-one tally on the pool party scoreboard. Located on a stretch of Reem Island’s beachscaped coastline, Cove Beach has a sun-soaked itinerary of seafront fiesta for the capital’s boho beachset. There’s Aqua Cove on Fridays, with three hours of free flowing tipples for Dhs159 (between 3pm and 6pm) and tunes courtesy of the captain of the decks, DJ Eldar Stuff. That’s followed neatly by ‘Rosé All Night’, also on Fridays, where ladies can enjoy four hours (9pm to 1am) of limitless drinks for just Dhs99. On Saturdays, it’s ‘Garden of Cove’ (8pm until late), a soiree of big atmospheric beats from DJ Bambina, DJ Monkeye and DJ Eldar Stuff, with a three-hour, Dhs249 drinks package for gents, whilst the girls get four free select beverages and buy-one-get-one free on shisha. On Sunday, it’s ‘Rosé All Day’ (noon to 5pm), where girls get five hours of unlimited sips and a food platter for Dhs149 (shisha Dhs49), while chaps get those same five hours for Dhs249, and the food platter. a Cove Beach, Makers District, Reem Island. Access is free for the adjacent Hilton guests, but for everybody else day passes are available for Dhs250 between Monday and Friday (with Dhs150 back as F&B credit). On weekends, it’s Dhs350 (also with Dhs150 back as credit). Emirates Palace Saturday Sunset Brunch Brand new to the beach brunching scene, and bristling with bohemian glamour, the Emirates Palace Saturday Sunset brunch at Las Brisas takes place on the last Saturday of every month. Running from 5.30pm to 10pm, the fiesta includes food and drink, a bonfire by the beach and access to the expansive pool complex, which is perfect for starlit soaks. The drinks are Latin-inspired and the bites take the form of a suitably luxurious ‘pass-around menu‘. The food offering is built on a blend of wild opulence and more tested brunch classics. Expect oysters and caviar to appear alongside fish ‘n’ chips, wagyu burgers, sushi, prawn tacos and a collection of live-grilled dishes. a Emirates Palace, W Corniche Road, 5.30pm to 10pm, Dhs495. Cancun Wet Wednesday at Amerigos Dip Fest at Al Maya Island For this first of a Dip Fest double, we’re taking you back to the island – Al Maya Island and Resort to be precise. It takes place every Saturday between noon and 8pm. Tickets are priced at Dhs250, which includes Dhs100 of food and beverage credit and your boat transfers. TING IRIE PON DI BEACH

With 13,000km between Kingston and Abu Dhabi, how well does authenticity travel? aribbean is probably one of the least well-represented cuisines in the UAE. But things have been changing, albeit slowly. Abu Dhabi has been welcoming new restaurants, all passionate about serving up Calypso spirit food. One of those venues is Ting Irie Pon Di Beach, a Saadiyat shoreline sister-offshoot of Dubai’s now-legendary Jamaican lounge found in Souk Al Manzil. The menu at both locations promises authentic Kingstonian bites – large and small – but with price tags those used to eating Caribbean food elsewhere (including at the source) might find a little buccaneering. We’re sat at a window seat on the first floor of Ting Irie Pon Di Beach looking out across the corduroy lines of linen sand. On the speakers, the beat bounces from ‘90s R&B bangers to reggae, some Nas, and a little dancehall. We’ve got Jamaican beef patties, an oxtail cocobread bun, jerk chicken wings and jerk hummus, all of which are almost half price, thanks to a Friday ‘Sun Down’ special (Dhs30 each that are usually around Dhs50 each). The jerk chicken wings are loud and fiery. The oxtail coco bun is a triumphant spicy mouthful of stew and slaw, and tantamount to a tropical reimagining of a Japanese bao. Our beef patties are all the way authentic with a crumbly

C

stew (usually around Dhs150, but each dish is just Dhs75 on the day that we dine). It’s impossible to fault the flavour of these Jamaican staples, as they hit all the right chords. But in terms of the execution and presentation, they feel a long way from the raw splendour of auntie’s bubbling pots, or the compartmentalised polystyrene boxes you pick up from rickety tables at North London carnival sound stages. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. This is, in essence, a celebration of Caribbean culture, just with a UAE edge to it. Verdict: Ting Irie comes highly recommended, delivering a strong ensemble of Jamaican food enhanced by a banging soundtrack and incredible daily promotions (brunch, set menus, ladies nights) to help you get more for less. a Mamsha Al Saadiyat, Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi, 10am to 11pm (weekdays), 10am to 1pm (weekends). RACLETTE BRASSERIE AND CAFÉ Is this the best business lunch in Abu Dhabi?

usiness lunches at great restaurants often feel like a bit of a hack. You’re a ‘cap-on-backwards’ computer whizzkid from a ‘90s movie, frantically tapping away in front of a green and black monitor and then... ‘Bingo!’, You’ve found a ‘back door into the system’. Menu Du Jour at Mamsha Al Saadiyat’s Raclette Brasserie and Café, is a threecourse menu, available between 11am and 5pm Monday through Friday, and there’s a set price of Dhs109, which includes one

B

38_What’s On

house beverage. Or you can upgrade to a package, which includes two hours of freeflow for a total cost of Dhs139 (this includes Prosecco). Although we’re not sure how much ‘business’ is actually being done if you’re out of the office for a two-hour jolly. The restaurant switches up the menu throughout the week and each day there are a number of choices for starters, mains and desserts. We’ve called in on a Thursday lunchtime, taken a colonial wicker-style seat up by the bar and are making zero effort to calm our overt swooning over the interior design. It’s an art deco safari, with looping swirls of verdant canopy hanging from the ceiling. There are statuettes of cherry red and citrus green macaws, and crockery sets that look bang out of a Bourdeaux bistro. Our first course is a French onion soup, with great molten dollops of nutty gruyere. It’s a pretty authentic execution, with a low hum of caramel, a meaty foreground found in the savoury stock and cheese, and an onion floating playfully on top.

The main course is a mussels and cream ensemble, served with a crunchy French baguette. The base elements are there. The mussels are a ripe tangerine hue and full of that fresh bivalvic marinesweetness. It is an enjoyable dish. But there is some room for improvement. The cream was a little underseasoned for our taste and inconsistently thick in places. Tart tatin is a great way to bring the curtain down on a show and there’s no business like a good business lunch. It’s a big buttery Provencal bisou on the cheek, shepherded by fluffy pastry, wafts of spice, ripe baked fruit and an effortless forktilling consistency. Verdict: The overall quality of the various plates from the Menu Du Jour is probably just slightly shy of what you’d expect from an average item from the a la carte offering (in all fairness, it sets a high bar). But in terms of value for money, it really is the business. a Mamsha Al Saadiyat, Saadiyat Island, 11am to 5pm Mon to Fri. MEET THE CHEF

GAETANO LUCIANI

Chef de cuisine at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr I decided to become a chef at the age of 10. I saw my grandmother cook irresistible meals, and observed the beauty of transforming ingredients into art. I’ve admired everyone I’ve worked with, from kitchen helpers to Michelin honoured chefs. I’ve always looked up to chef Andrea Tarini – he was a great mentor. He taught me that there are five secrets to be a great chef: commitment, creativity, intuition, leadership and mentorship. Francescana by Massimo Bottura is the world’s best restaurant for me. The dishes are cleverly presented with innovative combinations of flavours and lots of originality. Here in the UAE, Social by Heinz Beck is my favourite. It is my go-to place whenever I miss home. The food is divine. My favourite dish is ravioli ricotta e spinaci. It always brings back all those beautiful memories of my childhood. I have a huge list of the local ingredients I love. It’s difficult to choose a favourite but if I must choose it would be our local seafood. I would never take the lasagna or ravioli off the menu at Marco’s. They keep the Italian flag high. a Fairmont Bab Al Bahr. Khor Al Maqta. Tel: (0)2 654 3333. @fairmontbabalbahr

New sunset feasts at Emirates Palace

A

s part of its adoption into the Mandarin Oriental portfolio, Emirates Palace has been undergoing a bit of a transformation. Entire wings of the luxurious chateau-surmer are undergoing a tasteful reimagining of what is a genuinely iconic building. One of the benefits is a shake up to the hotel’s culinary offerings. First it was the addition of Italian restaurant Talea by Antonio Guida, but there’s more. After being dropped off by the hotel’s golf buggy, we’ve plonked ourselves down on the breezy terrace of Las Brisas. It’s early evening and we have a grandstand view of the sun’s amber orb slipping into the watery Corniche horizon. A jumbo tiki-torch bonfire crackles in the distance, while a roaming bongo player adds another layer of percussion to the brunch’s soundtrack of low-fi house beats, and all of this, along with the meandering network of pool lights around us, contribute to giving the venue a very strong vacay vibe. It’s humid, but well within tolerable range, which is important as this brunch

continues to run on the last Saturday of the month throughout summer. Brunch is a Latin feast and opens with guacamole and tortilla chips. There are oysters with a spicy salsa vinaigrette, too. A champion start. Further plates of light bites and Mexican street food slide onto the table. We have marinated chicken wings and perfectly cooked calamari fritti. Meat comes from the grill, alongside a medley of flame-cooked sea food featuring octopus, prawns and chunky white fish. It is served with soft taco shells and a fun collection of sauces and salsas that are a delight to experiment with. Our servers come to the table with dessert, weaving in between the dripping diners returning from mid-brunch pool breaks. It’s a collection of pastries and cakes, topped with fruit, puffed with cream and steeped in chocolate. It’s a neat end to a well-conceived culinary line up. a Emirates Palace, last Saturday of the

ART

In full bloom

Highlife poster artist Clare Napper launches new 2022 collection inspired by the flowers of the UAE

C

lare, we’ve missed you. What have you been doing since your last art collection? Well, during the pandemic I was slowly releasing new Highlife posters. I’ll be working on the last few posters to complete the series, although there are always more I feel compelled to do. I also designed a locally-themed game called ‘Sandy Charades,’ which has sold out both festive seasons. Then Expo 2020 happened, which was a dream job. You might have seen my vintage designs in the souvenir shops. Last month, I had the pleasure to tie up with Ravis x Adidas and bring new life to my Ravi’s poster, and I also released my first NFTs in metaverse galleries by Dubai’s Morrow Collective. All in all, I’ve been having a very enjoyable time.

Owning a print from your High Life collection is almost a rite of passage for Dubai residents – did the response shock you? Absolutely. I often have to pinch myself that my work is still being bought every day. I am so grateful to all my customers as they have allowed me to completely change the direction of my life. I feel as if I have only just started on this new creative journey.

also the colourful flowers you see on roundabouts. They do really well in this hot sun.

Now you’re back with Jardins Des UAE – can you tell us about it? Last year I moved into a very idyllic old bungalow and have since been in awe of the plant life around my neighbourhood. It was all so colourful and glorious that I felt compelled to try and capture it in graphic art.

What has been the response so far? Well, all who came to the exhibition launch seemed to love the idea and hadn’t seen their flowers portrayed like this before. Everyone had a different favourite, although the most popular seemed to be the traveller’s palm. I sold two large frames in the first 20 minutes so that was the best response I could hope for.

So, you’ve been inspired by your own garden? Yes. I’ve tried to bring new life to our favourite flowers and palms through my poster format, in the hope they will become a collectable series for villa dwellers. I experimented with both muted and bold colour options to suit different tastes. So far the collection includes bougainvillea, frangipani, livistona palm, periwinkle, traveller’s palm and desert rose. Do you have a personal favourite? It has to be the pink periwinkle. I love the colours, the simplicity and the joyful boldness. Periwinkles are

What do you try to achieve with every collection you create? All my work so far has been to try and capture insights into our expat experience that we all share. I think a shared understanding of a place brings comfort and a sense of home.

What are you working on next? I have actually begun a new project around the theme of ‘big tech and society’. My animated NFT in Art Dubai was the first of this series. It is such a rich topic to explore. I plan to get immersed this summer when everything is quieter. I just got temporarily distracted by the stunning bougainvillea outside my studio...

Prints come in a range of sizes from A5 (Dhs85) to A3 Limited Edition Oak Framed prints (Dhs650). q highlife-dubai.com

FILM FILM

RELEASES NEWNEW RELEASES

DIRECTOR: David Leitch CAST: Brad Pitt, Sandra Bullock, Bad Bunny, Joey King

Bullet Train Brad Pitt goes off the rails with this action-packed heist

Based on a Kōtarō Isaka novel, directed by David ‘John Wick’ Leitch and starring Brad Pitt in the lead role, there are a lot of reasons why we’re excited about Bullet Train. It’s a heist movie based on a train, with a hitman looking to retire, but is who dragged back in for one last score. Ok, it’s not the most original premise, but the elements are there for an action classic and for that reason, you son of a gun, we’re in. Expected: August 4 50_What’s On

Nope DIRECTOR: Jordan Peele CAST: Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun It’s been an absolute joy watching Jordan Peele’s ascension from talented sketch comedian to the Oscar-winning filmmaker he is today. And this latest project from the king of modern thrillcore, Nope looks like it’s going to be another gloriously uncomfortable watch. The plot antagonists appear to be of extraterrestrial origin, a new direction for Peele, but once again no doubt succinctly satirizing some nuanced aspect of modern culture — whilst being absolutely petrifying in the process. Expected: August 25

Paradise Highway DIRECTOR: Anna Gutto CAST: Morgan Freeman, Cameron Monaghan, Juliette Binoche Morgan Freeman plays the wise, grizzled ‘seen it all’ half of a law enforcement duo (never a bad start to a synopsis), whose partner (played by Cameron Monaghan) is a young, enthusiastic FBI agent who may or may not play by the rules. They’re on the hunt for a missing girl, a trail that sets them on the heels of a frazzled truck-driving Juliette Binoche, blackmailed by a prison gang into smuggling illicit cargo. Could the cargo be the aforementioned missing girl? The trailer seems to radio in a big ten-four. Expected: August 4

Three Thousand Years of Longing

Beast DIRECTOR: Baltasar Kormákur CAST: Idris Elba, Sharlto Copley, Iyana Halley Idris Elba is no stranger to voicing the part of an animal in movies. Just off the top of our heads, there’s that time he played a buffalo in Zootopia, a tiger in The Jungle Book, a sea lion in Finding Dory, a cat in Cats, and most recently a space echidna in Sonic 2. He just has one of those deeply stirring voices. This new movie, expected to hit screens around mid-August, has turned the tables a little bit and sees our man Idris along with his two daughters trying to evade a particularly rampant lion on the open plains of the African Savanna. Expected: August 11

DIRECTOR: George Miller CAST: Tilda Swinton, Idris Elba Director and screenwriter George Miller, probably best known for the bleak brutality of his post-apocalyptic Mad Max saga, has taken a screeching cinematic turn here by reimagining One Thousand and One Nights’ Aladdin. Whilst on a trip to Istanbul, Alithea (Tilda Swinton) buys herself a trinket from an old bazaar. It’s a lamp, which after an abrasive clean, reveals a djinn played by our old lion bait mate, Idris Elba. True to form, she gets three wishes if she agrees to set the djinn free. And if you think it’s all going to go smoothly, you haven’t been paying attention to your mythology (or the average run time of Hollywood movies). Expected: August 31

Cryotherapy

Are freezing cold temperatures the answer to dropping a few kilos?

A

t first glance, cryotherapy sounds more like a form of torture than a spa treatment – how would you like to stand in a tubed-shaped chamber, pretty much naked, in temperatures of -110°C? Not tempted? What about if we told you it can improve your sleep, reduce inflammation after exercise and help you shed up to 800 calories in just three minutes? Restart is the name of the company that wants to give you the chills. Restart’s promise of a quick fix will certainly lure in those of you short of time, but does it actually work? Cryo promises to do many things, including offering pain relief, combating insomnia, soothing eczema and improving your immune system and organ function. It helps boost circulation and increases energy levels by releasing endorphins by using a dry, nitrogen mist. The treatment is non-invasive, although you can only wear a set of underwear and some special shoes, socks and mitts when you enter the machine. Not surprisingly, it gets more than a little chilly in there and towards the end of a session What’s

On was fidgeting with discomfort from the cold – we recommend you get the therapist to distract you by talking to you for the three minutes, which seem to take an eternity to pass as you get colder and colder. DISCOVER THE MAGIC OF

MADRID Spain’s culturally packed capital is bursting with hidden gems

W

ith its bustling street markets, burgeoning collection of museums, and timeless tapas bars, Madrid is a city with soul. With hidden gems around every corner, history 58_What’s On

and heritage collide with a new wave of modern eateries and new openings that are transforming this sun-soaked capital into one of Europe’s most alluring – and interesting – city breaks this summer.

THE TO-DO LIST Row, row, row your boat at Retiro Park

Soak up the sights at Plaza Mayor

For a mere €8, you can see one of Madrid’s prettiest spots, Retiro Park, from a different perspective: calmly rowing the waters of its picturesque lake. While locals sunbathe by the stunning monument to Alfonso XII or tuck into picnics in the dappled shade, you can bob along on the lake, watching street performers and busking musicians as you go. Top tip: Go early to avoid the queues.

No trip to Madrid is complete without a visit to Plaza Mayor. Once the centre of old Madrid, the current buildings date back to the late 1700s and early 1800s and among its most striking is Casa de la Panaderia, which features beautiful Baroque-style murals on its façade. Plaza Mayor has played host to markets, sporting events and bullfights, although on any regular day you’ll find lots of restaurants and tapas bars lining the edge.

Shop ‘till you drop at Galeria Canalejas

Check out one of Europe’s top museums, Museo Nacional Del Prado The jewel in Madrid’s roster of galleries and museums is Museo Nacional Del Prado. Steeped in 200 years of history, this art emporium is one of three cultural masterpieces that make up the Paseo del Arte. Alongside housing the world’s largest collection of Spanish paintings, works from Italy and the Flemish region of Belgium can be enjoyed here, with more than 8,600 paintings and 700 sculptures to peruse. Alongside the permanent collection, current exhibitions include Paret, a celebration of the 18th century artist’s finest masterpieces until August 21; and La Quinta del Sordo, a 40-minute film by Philippe Parreno which interprets Francisco Goya’s Black Paintings in a new medium until September 4. q museodelprado.es

There are plenty of places to shop in Madrid: El Corte Ingles… Gran Via… but the latest addition is Galeria Canalejas, three floors of fashion, fine jewellery and gastronomy. After browsing boutiques of some of the world’s biggest brands – Rolex, Valentino and Giorgio Armani – fuel up at the food hall where there’s 13 restaurants to choose from, ranging from Omakase and tacos to Castilian and Galician cuisines. q galeriacanalejas.com

TRAVEL // MADRID

WHERE T O E AT

Mercardo de San Miguel Tasting your way around Madrid’s array of foodie mercados is one of the best ways to experience this city and while Mercado de San Miguel might not be the biggest it’s arguably one of the best. With more than 30 market stalls to feast around, serving far more than just jamon, tortilla and tapas (although there’s plenty of that too), this historic market – found just around the corner from Plaza Mayor – benefits from a central location, an array of bars serving local wine, cava and beers, and an electric atmosphere. q mercadodesanmiguel.es

Amazonico If you love the jaw-dropping, jungleinspired interiors of Amazonico Dubai, you’ll be dazzled by the original in Madrid. A duo of oh-so-pretty terraces, a vibrant bar adorned with rich foliage, and a restaurant dotted with comfy booths are all surrounded by Amazonico’s signature vibrant décor. The menu, much like the restaurant in Dubai, presents an opportunity to explore flavours from across Latin America. The Picanha Rodicio is a must-try. q restauranteamazonico.com

La Plateria Bar Restaurante When you pass a restaurant where locals and staff are chatting like long lost friends, enter immediately. La Plateria has got all the makings of a top tapas bar: red awnings, glass cabinets filled with freshly made tapas, a chalk board menu scrawled with the daily specials. Handily located a short stroll from the Museo Nacional Del Prado, the alfresco seating offers a picturesque spot for people watching, with generous plates of patatas bravas, crispy calamari and Spanish tortilla. Two of you can eat like kings and still get change from a €50 note.

LASTMINUTE TRIP An adult playground right on the Jumeirah Beach coastline at W Dubai – Mina Seyahi The location As far as locations go, you can’t beat W Dubai – Mina Seyahi. It’s situated on the Jumeirah Beach coastline and smack bang in the middle of Dubai Marina, one of Dubai’s hottest lifestyle neighbourhoods (without actually having to deal with Dubai Marina traffic). Residents of Dubai will know this area well as Barasti’s turf, and the hotel’s rooms have a bird’s-eye view of the legendary nightlife institution.

If you come for the location, you’ll stay for the actual hotel. W Dubai – Mina Seyahi cuts a distinct figure on the Dubai skyline – a 31-storey building shrouded in sleek lines, glass architecture and smooth curves that wrap around the stylish guestrooms. The design-led lobby is striking in an old-world charm way that’s in direct contrast to W Dubai – The Palm’s futuristic aesthetic. Here, the W Lounge pays homage to Middle Eastern gold souks, with rich, warm hues and gold accents to create a dark and brooding bazaar.

The rooms W Dubai - Mina Seyahi features 318 rooms, including 27 suites – mostly fully sea-facing with a private balcony. The design blends accents of traditional Middle Eastern elements in a bright, inviting space that melds luxury with a bit of personality, while the brand’s signature Mix Bar (and its hidden coffee machine) are welcome luxuries that make the room fun. The weekend turn down 66_What’s On

“THIS WET DECK HAS AN EXCLUSIVE FEEL, AS IF YOU’RE SUNBATHING AT A MEMBER’S ONLY CLUB...” service features two unusual gifts; two free drinks vouchers for Barasti and a pair of ear plugs to help drown out its live music nights on the beach. Take both.

The facilities The main centre point for the hotel’s guests is Wet Deck, the W brand’s universal poolside party spot. At W Dubai – Mina Seyahi, it’s a trendy and intimate space with a very exclusive feel, as if you’re sunbathing at a member’s only club. (Note: under 16s are not permitted here). Elsewhere, there’s the BAR-B spa featuring four treatment rooms, a beauty bar, and relaxation areas with cocktails on demand. Meanwhile, the fitness centre, 1Rebel, will mark the UAE debut of the UK sports-luxe fitness experience, but that’s not set to open until 2023.

The food and drink For now, most of the action (breakfast, poolside lunch and dinner) takes place at Ginger Moon, the indoor-outdoor lounge and restaurant. Perfect daytime snacks include the gourmet pepperoni flatbread and fabulous club sandwich, while evening signature dishes include a pineapple and jasmine, rice and langoustine with organic chicken. Still to come – Attiko, a rooftop lounge serving pan-Asian cuisine and signature cocktails is slated to open later this year, and W Beach Club next to Barasti opens in 2023.

The room rates The ‘Fantastic’ guest rooms, featuring one king bed, sea views and a balcony, start at Dhs1,250 per night. q w-dubai-mina-seyahi.com
