EDITOR’S LETTER
ARE YOU HUNGRY…
... if so, you’ve picked up the right magazine. This month, we show you how you can eat dishes from more than 18 countries without leaving the safety of Abu Dhabi. The best thing about our main story, called Big Brekkie Adventures, is the variety – whether you want Thai, Japanese or even Afghani grub, you can find it in the UAE capital. Head to page 38 for our comprehensive list in partnership with Abu Dhabi Culinary Season. If anyone can eat at all of the restaurants featured before our September issue comes out, let me know and we’ll give you a prize – although I’ve no idea what it’ll be (and we probably should tell you to go for a run or 10 to burn off all those calories). Also this month we see the return of the What’s On Lock In – an epic weekend of brunches, free after-party drinks, free treatments, piercings, games and more, all culminating in a brilliant overnight stay at Media One Hotel for a steal at Dhs699 per room, per couple. At the time of writing we only have a handful of rooms left, so head to page 15 to check out our incredible itinerary and details on how to book your spot. Hopefully, I’ll either catch you tucking into fluffy Japanese breakfast pancakes in the capital, or getting your nose pierced at Media One in Dubai. Enjoy the issue,

INSIDE MEDIA ONE HOTEL XXXXXX
The What’s On Lock In hits up an old favourite this month. We find out what makes Media One special...
MEET THE DIRECTOR OF HOTEL OPERATIONS
Lukas Tremmel
By day, Media One Hotel is a hip creative hangout. By night, a party palace. Agreed? “Work hard and party harder”. That’s the Media One motto. The hotel is definitely a hub for the creative community. It’s also light-hearted, from the artwork and sculptures we choose to adorn the walls, to the marketing collateral we produce. Then, as the business day draws to a close, the après work scene commences with caféW, Qwerty, and Garden on 20_What’s On
8 offering some of the liveliest happy hours in Media City, while Coco Lounge comes to life. If that’s not enough, Mr. Miyagi’s and Q43 offer further temptations to continue the fun late into the night.
‘break-in on 9’, P7 Arena events in our carpark and more recently on Level 41 and ON42. We recently celebrated our 10th anniversary and have been proud to entertain Dubai for 10 years.
Why do you think Media One Hotel has lasted the distance? Because it’s not just a hotel. It’s a destination. The connection with the Dubai community has been key to establishing this and something that we have worked tirelessly on over the years. Plus, we are the pioneers of ‘pop-up’ events. Over the last 10 years which have included memorable nights such as
Everyone talks about your team so positively… Our team is our heart and soul; without them our success would not be possible. Everyone who works at Media One is an enthusiast and we have enthusiasts from over 40 different nationalities, which reflects the cosmopolitan society in Dubai. We have a simple mission that states ‘Go Beyond the Ordinary’ and we
INSIDE MEDIA ONE HOTEL
encourage our team to perform in an exceptional, personalised manner; to be creative, think out of the box, and embrace empowerment. What safety measures have you put in place? The safety, security and wellbeing of our team, our office tower tenants, and our hotel and restaurant guests has absolutely been top of mind over the last few months. We have been open throughout the pandemic and this has enabled us to be early adopters and to quickly implement all necessary measures. We have appointed an international safety and
“WORK HARD, PLAY HARDER. THAT’S THE MEDIA ONE MOTTO”
security organisation to carry out an independent audit that not only ensures compliance with local authority guidelines but also demonstrates that we operate in-line with international best practice. Of course, as Media One Hotel, we have chosen to communicate our strict adherence to social distancing measures in a very creative “Media One” way which can be seen through our videos, floor stickers and door seals. You’ll see when you visit… What do the rooms look like? Our rooms are very cleverly designed to maximise space and over the last 18 to 24 months we have added smarter technology to ensure our business travellers have technology at their fingertips. We have recently added a keyless entry system via the guest smart phone; this is obviously a huge USP in the new ‘norm’ of minimising touch points on the guest journey. The latest additions include a QR code for the guest laundry list and converting your mobile phone into your TV remote control. Are you ready for the What’s On Lock In? We are very excited! After the last few months, this is the perfect way to unwind and have some fun. We are working hard with the What’s On team to ensure a fun-packed weekend of activities, lots of eating and drinking and, of course, lots of fun. To those attending, take my advice and don’t have a big Thursday night the night before! Come early, and immerse yourself in one epic weekend… q mediaonehotel.com What’sOn_21

hank goodness for our restaurants. They have helped us find a more satisfying happy medium between ordering Deliveroo and our own relatively rubbish home-cooking. Many local restaurants have kept their purveyors and employees working by offering meal kits that have all the ingredients and instructions you need to recreate amazing meals at home. The latest to launch is Vida Hotels and Resorts’ three versions of epic home kits that can be delivered straight to your door.
Cheese platter delivery The first is a cheese platter, with six variations of cheese, plus crackers, dried fruit, vegetable crudités, jams, nuts, and grapes. Price: Dhs189 including all taxes and delivery charges. Feeds: Each kit serves two to three people

Vida’s kit comes with three bags of uncooked fries, plus three types of gravies (including the epic truffle mushroom and butter chicken), cheese chunks and parmesan shavings, as well as assorted of toppings to complement your fries. BREAKFAST REVIEW
La Serre
Is it quality over quantity at this French favourite?
B
runch tends to get a little debauched here in Dubai. With our penchant for allyou-can-eat buffets and freeflowing drinks, that favourite Friday pastime is often more excessive than elegant. Over the past few months, we’ve had a break from those epic feasts. And now, perhaps, we’re reassessing the need for such stuffed-to-the-gills extravagance. There’s still a time and a place for spoiling ourselves with great food and wine, however. And for those looking for a more, shall we say ‘adult’ way, to spend a weekend, 48_What’s On
La Serre has come up with a very civilised solution: the Champagne Breakfast. Now, let’s clear this up straight out of the gate. At Dhs349 per person, it’s as pricey as some full-blown brunch buffets – but here it’s all about quality, rather than quantity. It’s also about flexibility, with the Champagne Breakfast available on Fridays and Saturdays, from 9am to 5pm.
What to expect La Serre’s entrance sets the tone for a sophisticated affair. Once we pass through the buzzy boulangerie below, we climb a broad staircase
adorned with white flowers and lanterns. We’re led past the open kitchen and bar, through the light-filled dining room to a petal-strewn table overlooking Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard. The maitre d’ pours us each a glass of Champagne to sip while we browse the menu. Included in the price is a basket of pastries, fresh fruit platters, Greek yoghurt, a choice of hot egg dishes, and
two glasses of Champagne. We order the oeufs brouillés à la truffe noir (organic scrambled eggs with black truffle) and l’avocat Benedicte de “La Serre”. Other luxe options include fried eggs with a foie gras and onion sauce, and scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. After about 25 minutes, the pastries, fruit, yoghurt and eggs arrive all at once. Next time, we’d ask to have the cold plates served straight up, so we could graze on these while the hot dishes were prepared. It’s hard to know what to eat first. We flit between dishes on the table, scooping up fluffy eggs, tearing apart buttery croissants and pain au chocolats, spearing berries with our forks, and dipping into huge bowls of yoghurt topped with nuts and Persian honey. The egg dishes are perfectly executed. Generous shavings of summer truffle cloak the scrambled eggs, and the poached eggs “La Serre” are cooked exactly as requested, with runny golden yolks and firm whites. Paired with that second glass of Champagne, we’re perfectly sated. La Serre’s Champagne Breakfast isn’t going to replace your raucous weekend brunch. But, if you’re entertaining family, hosting a catch-up with girlfriends, or looking for a romantic meal with your partner, it promises an indulgent, but never overdone experience. a La Serre, Vida Downtown,
Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, Downtown Dubai. Champagne Breakfast, Fri and Sat, 9am to 5pm. Dhs269 with alcohol-free sparkling, Dhs349 with Champagne. Tel: (04) 528 3779. laserre.com

ack in the day, you’d pull into a grassy lawn, park your ‘57 Chevy Bel Air convertible, and, if you were lucky enough to have an in-car radio at the time, hurry to dial into the movie audio’s radio frequency. Drive-in movie theatres – especially in the UAE – have high-quality sound and film equipment, electric car charging stations, and gourmet food on offer.

Do some good
Spread kindness with these six UAE initiatives
T
he effects of the Covid-19 pandemic are being felt across the globe, from businesses closing down to parents struggling to provide for their families. If you want to help but don’t know where to start, there are several grassroots initiatives that are offering assistance to those in need.
STOP AND HELP Stop and Help launched in March with one clear objective: to match people in need with people who can help. If you fall into the latter camp, check out Stop and Help DXB. You can choose to help one family for one week or in four weeks help four different families. You can provide one-off groceries and baby essentials from just Dhs250. You receive messages from the family you’ve helped, so you can see exactly how your act has impacted their lives. q @stopandhelpdxb
THE SME RISE COLLECTIVE The SME Rise Collective is an initiative that was born out of many SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) struggling in the wake of Covid-19. Two agencies (Tish Tash and Fox and Hound) in Dubai joined forces to form The SME Rise Collective – a platform that offers individuals and companies the chance to come together and support one another. You can pay as little as Dhs100 towards helping a local SME by sponsoring an SME’s marketing package. q smerisecollective.com
NEFSY Nefsy is a dine-in app that launched in September last year to support those in need during the Covid-19 pandemic. Working in collaboration with the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department and the Dubai 54_What’s On
Government, Nefsy sends meals to two people for just Dhs12. You can even purchase a 30-day package for just Dhs350, providing 60 meals throughout the month. q nefsy.com
YALLAGIVE YallaGive is the first licensed online donation and crowdfunding platform in the Middle East. It supports more than 123 charities and runs hundreds of fundraising campaigns every month. You can find a plethora of active campaigns running on its website, from Covid-19 relief support and crisis funds to providing essential baby care packs, and much more. Pick a campaign close to your heart and donate. q yallagive.com
TWO METRES PLEASE Two Metres Please is a clothing collection created by a pair of expat surfers to help enforce the social distancing rule. You’ll find quotes such as ‘I need some space,’ and ‘better space, than sorry’ on tote bags, cloth masks, T-shirts, hats and more. Masks are priced at Dhs18 and you can pick up a T-shirt for Dhs50. The merchandise is printed and produced locally to help support the local community and 50 per cent of the money raised goes to charity. q twometresplease.ae
DO YOUR BIT
Q&A ALA LABABIDI
CO-FOUNDER OF TWO METRES PLEASE
Q: How did two surfers end up creating a fashion label? Myself and co-founder Simon McNally are friends and neighbours with very creative backgrounds as well as being surfers. Simon runs an interior architecture company and I run a creative agency. The idea came from Simon’s friend who launched a similar initiative in Manly, Australia called One Point Five Please. We decided to bring it to the UAE, localise the designs, make donations to charity and help support local businesses by producing the stock locally. Q: The designs are simple but funny. Was that the intention? We wanted to find a light way to encourage people to respect personal space. Especially now, with Dubai and the UAE “opening up” again, we can’t forget that we still need to respect the 2m distance, wear masks and sanitise etc. Wearing our fun and quirky merchandise can help you say “hey, respect my space”, without actually having to say it.
ONE GOOD THING If you purchase a fabric face mask pack from One Good Thing, you’ll receive one pack free to donate to someone in need. The masks are made from 95 per cent cotton, making them gentle on your skin. In addition, 50 per cent of each pack is made from fabric off-cuts that would be otherwise destined for landfill – which means you will be doing your bit for the environment. The masks are double layered and come with a slot where you can insert a surgical mask. If you have little ones, they also have a pack of four colourful masks available for Dhs95. q @onegoodthingme
Q: And the yellow spot? The yellow circle started in Australia and we then brought it here. The hope is that eventually people will know what the yellow circle means without having to read the messages or look it up. We hope that it becomes an international symbol for keeping your distance. Q: And the money you make is going to a good cause? Yes! Fifty per cent of our profits go to Dubai Cares. Q: Plans on expanding? We certainly hope so. We are working on new designs and fun new designs for children. Watch this space. What’s On_55

SME Revival Calling all SMEs: Motivate Media Group wants to lend its support
BUSINESS
Ian Fairservice, Managing Partner of Motivate Media Group
O
ne of our most coveted What’s On Awards that we present each year is Indie Restaurant Of The Year, championing those homegrown restaurants that leave an indelible mark on the UAE. Of course, these restaurants and other small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the UAE are having it tough right now. So, in the spirit of solidarity, and in the lead-up to the UAE’s 50th Anniversary next year, Motivate Media Group has announced a $1 million initiative to support local businesses. The SME Revival will provide $1 million in free advertising and marketing support to homegrown UAE SMEs. To help drive growth and strengthen businesses, Motivate will provide up to $50,000 of free advertising to 20 SMEs in the UAE. The chosen SMEs will have access to print, digital, marketing and editorial support from Motivate brands, including here in What’s On, as well as Gulf Business, Emirates Woman and Identity. Motivate will guide SMEs on best practices, helping them target audiences to ensure their campaigns deliver optimal results.
In announcing the initiative, Ian Fairservice, Managing Partner of Motivate Media Group, said: “We are celebrating the UAE’s success by helping others achieve their business goals. This is an incredibly hard time for all businesses, especially SMEs, and we have one of the largest media
portfolios to help businesses across the UAE.” The Department of Economic Development (DED) has approved the initiative, and it includes around $275,000 to support Tech SMEs in partnership with Sharjah Entrepreneurship Center (Sheraa).
How to apply for SME Revival
Motivate Media Group is appointing an expert panel to seek out companies with the potential to not only survive, but thrive in 2021 and beyond. Applications are open to all homegrown UAE businesses. The SMEs must then convince the panel that they will benefit from the significant marketing support, and show how their businesses will continue to grow and contribute to the UAE. If you’re an SME in the UAE, you can nominate your business for consideration at: motivatemedia.com/SMERevival

Seven activities to enjoy with your four-legged friend in the UAE
T
he UAE summer is upon us, but there’s still plenty of time to enjoy the great outdoors with your furry family member. Laetitia Guidicelli, founder of Flopster (flopster.com) – an app that connects pet lovers with a choice of petfriendly activities, tours and stays – has shared her top seven dog escapes and adventures with us below. “In recent years, we have seen a real uptick in the number of dog owners in the emirates, and with our four-legged friends considered part of the family, more and more dog owners are looking for experiences where they can bring their pets along too,” said Laetitia.
Set your alarm clocks, escape the city and enjoy these top pet-friendly activities…
01 Swim and hike at Wadi Showka Wadi Showka is a popular location right now as water levels at the wadi are relatively high – so it’s definitely worth visiting before it becomes dry. The spot is suitable for beginners and the hiking conditions to the first pool are flat and easy for both humans and dogs. Top tip: Arrive before 7am to avoid the crowds. 02 Hike and kayak at Hatta Dam This outing is the perfect combination of mountain hiking and water activities. The trail starts from the Hatta Wadi Hub and it’s then an approximate 4km hike before it ends at Hatta Kayak. Cool off with a spot of kayaking on the dam with your doggie aboard and enjoy the stunning views together.
Bonus: The outdoor activities also include water-based adventures to help beat the summer heat.
Water sports in Fujairah 03
Those of you who enjoy scuba diving will be thrilled to know there’s a scuba diving centre in Fujairah that is petfriendly – meaning you can scuba dive with your dog. Extreme Water Sports (@extremesports.ae) also offers up other water sport activities that you can enjoy with your pet, ranging from kayaking to paddle boarding and even snorkelling.

Note: Kayaks and bags for waste collection will be provided. 05 Dog island adventure in Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Island In partnership with @kkashtaa, Flopster brings pet lovers a boating adventure from Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi. You will sail through the mangroves by boat and stop at a secret desert island where the dogs can run off-leash, swim and play in the water. Kayaking is also included. Offer: Use code FLOPSTER and get 20 per cent off the three-hour cruising package for up to seven people with pets. Make your bookings on WhatsApp on 056 366 5335. 06 Visit Flamingo beach at RAK This popular public beach in Ras Al Khaimah got its name thanks to the two huge flamingo statues. A number of restaurants have opened up nearby for the convenience of visitors. There is ample parking available at the beach access point. 60_What’s On

Aziz, Nasma and Wazira Saluki pups Aziz, Nasma and Wazira were born along with their five other siblings in the Northern Emirates on 16 April. Their mother was very young for her first litter, and the eight puppies were born prematurely. Sadly, the mum passed away soon after the birth and the puppies were unable to feed in those first critical hours. At barely 24-hours-old, the pups needed round-the-clock care, with feeding every three hours and constant temperature regulation. The British Veterinary Centre was able to provide this immediately and its veterinary and nursing teams ensured the puppies were warm and loved. Meanwhile, Royal Canin

It’s all about the luxury design, decor and details at this Alserkal Avenue venue – you’ll wish your home was just as chic. The common space and café is the ultimate boho hangout, with rattan chairs, plush cushions, and Bali-style swings at the juice bar. And if you think the café is cool, wait until you step foot

The Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort celebrates its Thai heritage with tropical gardens, lagoon-style pools and Dubai’s only overwater bungalows.
The rooms After a seamless check-in, we jump into a golf buggy for a drive through the resort – and instantly feel as though we’ve left the UAE. We’re staying in Villa 75, an overwater bungalow at the very end of the boardwalk. It’s a soothing space of rich timbers, burnt-orange textiles, the gentle whir of a ceiling fan, and a peek-a-boo panel of glass in the floor, which offers a snapshot into the lagoon. Whether you’re kicking back in the king-sized bed, soaking in the ginormous bathtub, or relaxing on a daybed on the deck, Palm Jumeirah’s charms are on full display. Paddle boarders and kayakers silently glide past, palatial villas fan out across the fronds, and the skyscrapers of Dubai Marina provide a glittering nighttime backdrop.
The resort One of Anantara’s defining features is its swimming pools. The main pool is a temperature-controlled wonder, complete with a jacuzzi hut, bubbling spa beds, covered children’s pool, and swim-up bar (which is closed for the time being).
