....when the sun starts to shine brighter than it did just a few weeks ago, and the answer to that ever-growing question, ‘what’s on, What’s On?’ becomes just that little bit more difficult to answer. Summer, inevitably, brings with it changes in your downtime, but while the beach is probably not the place to be right now, there’s no need to sweat – metaphorically I mean – as Abu Dhabi still has a lot going on to keep you on your toes. Like indoor rock climbing. Or MMA training. Or, the slightly less intense, indoor power walking club. In fact, if you turn to our special on page 31, you’ll find a whole host of exciting workouts to help get you in tip-top shape over the upcoming summer months. July also marks the half-way point of 2022, but the fun’s nowhere near over. We’ve got your autumn/winter preview all lined up from p21, with a handful of events, festivals and musicals that you might not have known about yet. Throw in our Abu Dhabi after dark special (p14), a bumper eat and drink section (p35), and all the best Eid deals we can find (p58), and the shining sun shouldn’t stop your fun this July. Enjoy the issue.

Outrageously good truffle pizza at… The Artisan
THIS MONTH WHAT’S ON LOVES…
Pizza – even great pizza – is subjective. You may like a certain pizza more than another, but I don’t think you’ll find fault with the taste of the tartufo nero (Dhs210) at The Artisan. Shaved truffle from Piemonte and 72-hour fermented dough are key players to this indulgent dish, with a crisp-meets-moreish dough that cradles an ooey gooey lava of the good stuff. It’s a masterpiece in Italian cuisine, and the finest example of elegant pizza done right. @theartisandubai – Laura Coughlin, Head of Content
Wowed by dinner and a show at… Papillon I missed the first season of Layla Kardan’s daring dinner and a show concept, Papillon, so I was determined to make it now the creative team are back making magic for season two. A sultry supper club that brings burlesque vibes to The Westin Mina Seyahi, its new Wednesday night brunch is a great value Dhs395, with three hours of drinks, a three-course menu, and half-hourly shows from 9pm to 11pm. Each one sees a mini story unfold with drama and expert choreography to leave you dazzled. @papillondxb – Alice Holtham, Group Digital Editor
Wearing my Superstar Ravi trainers from... adidas When a pair of adidas trainers landed on my desk recently, I had no idea that they would cause such a viral reaction. The ‘Superstar Ravi’ kicks – designed in collaboration with Dubai institution Ravi Restaurant – caused a huge reaction from residents commending the brilliant partnership. Not only do they represent a nostalgic place in our hearts, but they also look pretty cool too. @adidasdxb @ravirestaurantsuae – Elise Kerr, Deputy Editor
Keeping cool, cosy and entertained indoors with my new subscription to… Disney+ After being teleported back to my childhood at the Disney+ official launch at Dubai Opera, I immediately signed up for the one-month subscription (Dhs29.99). There’s plenty of content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic to add to your ‘watchlist’. I’ve already got my list ready for the whole month and it includes the Marvel flick Moon Knight. @disneyplusmena
Practicing those bars for a night of… hip hop karaoke I discovered just recently that there’s a hip hop and R&B karaoke night in Abu Dhabi, and as a lifelong appreciator of the game, this is right up my alley. It goes down every Thursday night at Atlon Bar in The Souk Qaryat Al Beri, offering open invitations to ride on a Ginuwine Pony; join Mary’s campaign against Hateration and Holleration; or investigate if indeed the people truly have Forgot about Dre. @atlonabudhabi — Miles Buckeridge, Senior Online Reporter

As General Manager and Chief Sustainability Officer at Boca, sourcing local has been the core of your operation. How do you achieve this? The restaurant today stands on key pillars: championing and supporting local farmers, growers and fishermen’s produce; managing our waste output by creating a waste officer role who consolidates our waste data; creating a platform for sustainability discussions with like-minded individuals and organisations; and remaining committed to reducing our carbon emissions with full and transparent report detailing the impact of our operations and production lifecycle on the environment. You have become one of the city’s brightest F&B stars. How has that journey been? I’m very proud of where I am today and grateful for

Words: Laura Coughlin
AE Famous is a What’s On page focusing on people out there making the scene. They’re out there around town, shaping the UAE into what it is, creating the culture, food and life around us. We asked them what’s good in the UAE. We asked them what’s bad in the UAE. We asked them to tell us more, more, more about their wonderful selves… European stalwart Boca has stood the test of time in DIFC. What do you think has been the key to your longevity? We are proud of what we have achieved so far, and are embracing the evolution
“I AM OBSESSED WITH RIDDING THE INDUSTRY OF UNNECESSARY FLUFF” we are going through and the journey we are on. DIFC and Dubai are extremely competitive markets for restaurants; without the right positioning, a long-term vision and setting the right expectations, operators may set themselves up for disappointments. Since our inception, we have set out to create a space that provides quality food, drink, and service at value. Our guests understood this and many of them have remained loyal to this day. We wanted to stay true to our home, represent the resources we have access to here, with no frills and a big focus on our community.
the platform I call Boca. I believe in what we have and that with the local resources, we can create homegrown concepts that can rival global and established concepts. I am obsessed with ridding the industry of unnecessary fluff and developing food and drink concepts based on the framework of sustainability.
This is truly a journey, and I’m learning to enjoy it with the vision we have today, but also understanding that I do not have all the answers right now. What do you think about Michelin finally launching a Dubai guide? It’s good news. At last, the myriad restaurants that prepare exceptional cuisine, regardless of size or category, are being recognised. This is perhaps what makes these guides so unique: their broad representation of unique establishments – something that the UAE has no shortage of. We’re curious to see where we stand today compared with our counterparts. Most importantly, with its green star awards, it’ll raise awareness of the importance of addressing sustainability issues in our industry. What do you love about the UAE? Its constant strive to be a leading nation in all areas of life. It’s contagious and spurs me to improve and excel. What frustrates you? The inevitable phase of hypergrowth we are in and the challenges it brings, especially the noise and fuss about what is new and our obsession with style over substance. Do you reckon Dubai is your forever home? My daughters and I were born here, and I’m proud to call Dubai home. That said, I’m curious to learn about the workings of key nations that are at the forefront of the fight against climate change. My base, however, will always be Dubai. q @oshihab | @bocadubai

NEW RESTAURANTS
Sticky Rice This homegrown hidden gem – a Thai restaurant represented by a totemic cartoon duck ‘Kew’ – will be launching its first permanent fixture in Abu Dhabi, located at Yas Mall. It’s an eatery with a big following in Dubai, built off the back of highly covetous, occasionally unpronounceable, Bangkokian cuisine — pad krapow, tamarind chicken wings, kanom tom, tom yum and, of course, mango sticky rice. q @stickyriceae
Flamingo Room by Tashas A second UAE branch of Flamingo Room by Tashas will be opening somewhere in Abu Dhabi later this year (either Q3 or potentially Q4). The original Flamingo Room by Tashas opened its doors back in 2017 at the appropriately stunning Jumeirah Al Naseem hotel in Dubai, where the striking interiors give sophisticated finishes to the inspiration drawn directly from Africa’s enchanting wildernesses. Playful features such as meerkats and monkeys cast in bronze blend effortlessly with flamingo-pink and gold Art Deco styling, and the elegance of the food and drinks menu. q @flamingoroombytashas
EL&N Cafe One of the UK capital’s most coveted café experiences, EL&N, launched in DIFC earlier this year, as well as a slew of Saudi Arabia openings, and it appears that a second UAE branch is headed for Yas Bay Abu Dhabi. EL&N is known for stylish pink war paint, Insta-fresh menu items and an A-list celebrity following. And knowing Abu Dhabi’s penchant for posh coffees, we’re predicting this place will be booked out weeks in advance. q @elan_cafe
La Serre This Parisian-style bistro and boulangerie will be opening up in both Yas Mall and Galleria Mall. An import from Dubai, it offers a wide range of French foodie flair to Champs on – from plats principal such as corn-fed chicken stuffed with comte cheese, turkey ham and roasted ratte potato with mushroom sauce, to more petite bites like watermelon salad with almond, mint and feta. The latter is a refreshing salad, perfect for a summer’s day. Because it’s a bakery you also get oven-fresh crunch baguettes, dainty quaint croissants and ooh la la, chunky tranches of traditional French toast. q @laserredubai What’s On_25

GLAMPING
here’s a lot to be said for connecting with the great outdoors, unplugging, and breathing in lungfuls of fresh air. That’s always been a major part of the appeal of camping. It’s not for everyone, however, especially in the summer heat or those that are a little reluctant to let go of their big city creature comforts. And that’s where glamping comes in with a bestof -both-worlds compromise. The great outdoors, with great indoors – and importantly for the UAE – air con. These are just some of the best glamping experiences available in Abu Dhabi.
Anantara al Sahel – Sir Bani Yas So these are technically ‘safari villas’ but we’re including them because, well, just look at them. Sir Bani Yas is Abu Dhabi’s very own Jurassic Park, if you exchange giant dinosaurs with an exotic collection of African animals. Accessed via a 25-minute boat ride from Jebel Dhanna (itself a two-hour drive from downtown Abu Dhabi), the island wilderness is home to a collection of exciting wildlife, architectural wonders, romantic vistas and three luxury Anantara resorts. This castaway paradise is a protected Royal Nature Reserve, flourishing with over 11,000 animals, including 30 different endangered species such as blackbuck antelope and Arabian oryx as well as giraffe, ostrich and cheetah. Guests on the island have the opportunity to go on safari with ample opportunities to see these rare creatures, without a single cage or handler in sight. a Sir Bani Yas, off the coast of Jebel Dhanna Abu Dhabi, from Dhs1,999. anantara.com
Bab Al Nojoum – Al Mugheirah Abu Dhabi has a new camping experience hidden in the remote neighbourhood of Al Mugheirah, Al Mirfa. It’s run by Bab Al Nojoum who also run the operations on Hudayriyat Island. Here you can try a variety of activities such as tree planting, kite flying at dusk, fishing, horse riding, falconry, snorkelling, hiking, biking, yoga, swimming, water sports, futsal and more. There are even expert guided tours around the mangroves. Stay in a one or two bedroom cabin, or book one of these gorgeous airstream campers. a Al Mugheirah, Al Mirfa, Abu Dhabi, prices start from Dhs683 per night. babalnojoum.com

Pura Eco Resort For a real slice of nature, Jubail Mangrove Park is as good as it gets in Abu Dhabi. There’s a long wooden boardwalk that crosses above the city’s beloved natural mangroves with kayaking, paddleboarding activities available, too. Our favourite bit, however, is Pura Eco Resort – a series of shorefront eco domes for guests to stay in. You’ll find a spa, waterside dining and a roving green expanse for long walks, kayak trips or dawn-lit yoga sessions. Your spacious domes come with sourced pieces and locally crafted artwork and a lush bed. Jebel Hafit Desert Park Part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jebel Hafit is Abu Dhabi’s tallest peak, located in Al Ain and about 90 minutes’ drive from the Abu Dhabi city. Now operated by Pura Eco Retreats, the team that brought you those gorgeous glamping bubbles on Jubail Island, the campground offers static high-end tented accommodation as well as pitches for those that wish to bring their own canvas and poles. Holidaymakers come here to hike the heritage trails, mountain bike (rental available), enjoy dune buggy tours, ride camels, gaze up at the stars, and breathe in the rare fresh air. Those with a thirst for exploration should make the trek to Jebel Hafit’s two archeological sites. MAZI, THE ST. REGIS SAADIYAT ISLAND RESORT The return of this modern Greek is a celebrationworthy event
aadiyat Island has snuck up on Abu Dhabi’s good food scene as quietly and deliberately as Greek mythology’s Jason did on the fabled Golden Fleece. And it’s that enclave of crave – Mamsha Al Saadiyat – that has been running the full gastronomic gambit from casual Caribbean cuisine to refined French dining. But something that’s been absent from Abu Dhabi’s collective menu is a high-end, modern Greek restaurant. It’s a seat of office that’s now been filled elsewhere on the island by the reopening of Mazi, at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. Mazi is a venue that is beautiful in a very obvious, self-aware sort of way. It has a great blanched bone structure, dazzling bright turquoise sea views, and an assortment of eye-catching decor. One entire two-storey wall is taken up by a mosaic of blue doors, and there’s an artful
S
scattering of Grecian pottery, crystal orb chandeliers and enticingly arranged linen net partitions. You’ll probably be unsurprised to learn that the delightfully uncomplicated menu is staged around a sharing concept. It’s how we do things in the UAE, but it also happens to neatly align with how the Greeks do things, too. The first order is a bowl of freshly prepared tzatziki (Dhs55) to pair with the complimentary welcome bread. The lightly grilled garlic brioche provides a firm and perfumed bed for dollops of creamy tzatziki. As part of the starting ensemble we’ve also ordered some tuna tartare (Dhs85), and a plate of grandmama’s meatballs (Dhs95). Our tuna comes robed in a simple tartare dressing – it’s a cleverly balanced dish making it a gentler ride than a ceviche. The meatballs, in comparison, are a maze of flavour and texture – big bold beefy tones grapple with aromatic herbs in a joyful mouthful that genuinely feels snatched from nanna’s kitchen spoon ahead of lunch. We’ve ordered a pair of ‘wood and charcoal’ main dishes – octopus with olive and caper tapenade (Dhs160), and a chicken thigh souvlaki (Dhs135). The
octopus comes closer to the perfect grilltime texture than we’ve seen in a long while. It’s the tapenade, served on the side, that draws our one criticism of the dish – we found it a touch too rough, cool and intense for our particular palate, ultimately landing somewhere closer to a chutney. Mazi’s souvlaki, a skewer of chicken thighs, raises a dueling sword to the countless plates of shish tawouk found in Abu Dhabi. It’s juicy, lightly crumbed with crispy chicken skin and has a razorsharp edge of sun-plumped lemon. It’s just another modern upgrade that helps the restaurant stand out against the more traditional tavernas. Verdict: The return of Mazi is a celebration-worthy event, the restaurant offers fairly priced, often innovative, great tasting food. It’s also pretty easy on the eyes too. a Mazi Abu Dhabi, The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Wed to Mon 12pm and 3pm, and 7pm to 11pm (closed Tue). TALEA BY ANTONIO GUIDA, EMIRATES PALACE Is this the best Italian fine dining in the city?
here is no shortage of extravagance or glamour in Abu Dhabi, but Emirates Palace is an order of magnitude more, well, palacial than pretty much anywhere else in the city. It’s impossible not to meditate on that thought as we glide across the sea of marble in the ornate atrium. It’s 1pm and somewhere over our shoulder, a lobby pianist clad in full ballgown regalia is teasing a matinee concerto out of the rather grand set of ivories. We’re on our way to Talea, a culinary engine driven by multiple Michelin star-honoured Chef Antonio Guida. Inside the modern space, there are faux frescos on the wall depicting scenes from various Italian cities, and highlighted detailing on the ceiling coves. We’re starting this particular Italian job with calamari alla griglia (Dhs115) — a southern-Italian dish with grilled squid, squid ink, pureed pea and lime. The plate we see before us is a Rorschach test worthy of gallery

exhibition, arching dawbs of green and black provide the background to a playful arrangement of tentacle and ring. The art bleeds into the flavour too, this is a surf-n-earth pairing — cleverly standing the nutty botanical freshness of pea, alongside the rich globular umami of the ink and expertly seared squid. We chase the last few strokes of colour off the plate with tranches torn from the basket of freshly made bread. Then the pizza arrives. We have a philosophy when it comes to benchmarking Italian restaurants for their pizza skills, and that is you should seek to judge them by their margheritas. There’s no razzle-dazzle to hide behind, the execution must be clean and precise, and the components will immediately reveal the quality of the source. Talea’s margherita (Dhs85) passes the test with flying carbs. It’s all about the details, the authentic rustic tones of
the base, the smoky char of the woodfire bake, the deep European tang of the tomato sauce, bold garden-fresh basil and characterful mozzarella. Instead of dessert, we’ve selected a second main course, because — quite frankly, convention (and the sweet trolley) be damned. We’ve ordered ricciola (Dhs235), a fish dish built from a fillet of amberjack, courgettes, vinegar and mint. It’s humbling stuff, a little something that Abu Dhabi has been missing up until now. These are the sorts of flavour combinations that tug at Michelin calibre tripwires. Verdict: Talea is an Italian job extremely well done, blowing the doors of our expectations clean off. Best Italian fine dining in the city? It just might be. a Emirates Palace, W Corniche Road, Tue to Sun 12.30pm to 10.30pm, closed Monday. CHEF GIOVANNI RINALDI
Italian chef du cuisine at Sacci The first dish I ever made from scratch was lasagna. My mother introduced me to the culinary world, and I fell in love watching her hands moving on the wooden board, and then carefully laying the lasagna sheets to dry in the fresh air. My culinary hero is Chef Massimo Bottura. He is the most successful Italian chef and one of the best in the world. He is pure genius. His authenticity and craziness led Italian cuisine to another level, and showed that Italian food is more than pasta and pizza. My favourite dish at Sacci is supplì. My grandmother used to make this when I was growing up. The flavour of a rice croquette combined with tomato sauce and melted mozzarella and coated in breadcrumbs – it’s just something you simply can’t describe. Every time I eat her supplì, it brings me back to my childood. That’s why ours is called Supplì of Grandma Maria. Food quality is key. You can be the best chef in the world but if you don’t have the right products in the right season, you are already putting yourself at a disadvantage. My most memorable supper? I was having a meat grill at home in Rome by the seaside with all of the best people in my life. It was simple but full of joy. It’s the same way I live my life… always smiling. q @westinabudhabi

FILM
NEW RELEASES
DIRECTOR: Taika Waititi CAST: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale
Thor: Love and Thunder Our Asgardian hero returns to the silver screen albeit during a mid-life crisis Love, romance and a new female Thor as Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman return for more hammer time. In this actionpacked installment, Thor embarks on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. However, his retirement gets interrupted by Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), a galactic killer who seeks the extinction of the gods. 50_What’s On
Taika takes the reins (again) Love and Thunder is Thor’s fourth solo film, and it just might be his most ambitious adventure yet. Director Taika Waititi helped reinvigorate the goldenhaired hero with 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, and when he first began planning a sequel, all he knew was that he wanted to push the character into even more unexpected territory…
On producing a sequel to Thor: Ragnarok “What I didn’t want to do is just make Ragnarok again, because that’s been done. I needed to do something more interesting to keep the whole thing ignited and to make sure that I’m feeling creatively stimulated. I thought, ‘what’s the least expected thing with this franchise?’”
DC League of Super-Pets Director: Jared Stern Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Keanu Reeves, John Krasinski, Kevin Hart In DC League of Super-Pets, Krypto the Super-Dog (Dwayne Johnson) and Superman (John Krasinski) are best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime in Metropolis side by side. When Superman and the rest of the Justice League are kidnapped, Krypto must convince a rag-tag shelter pack – a hound, pig, turtle and squirrel – to master their own powers and help him rescue the superheroes.
On new themes and genre exploration “This one is still fun, and it’s got moments of being over the top, but thematically, it’s deeper than the last film. It’s not a serious film, but we do deal with themes about love and loss and our place in the world… it’s sort of like a midlife crisis film.”
On Christian Bale as a villain “[He’s] very formidable. I think personally, he’s one of the best villains that Marvel’s had in their films. He’s very layered.”
Where the Crawdads Sing Director: Olivia Newman Cast: Daisy Edgar-Jones, Taylor John Smith, Harris Dickinson Deserted by her family, a young woman (Daisy Edgar-Jones) raises herself alone in the marshes outside of her small town. When her former boyfriend is found dead, she becomes prime suspect for his murder. A tragic yet beautiful story of a young girl’s valiant survival against the odds, adapted from Delia Owen’s best-selling novel of the same name. What’s On_51
CULTURE
Nope Director: Jordan Peele Cast: Keke Palmer, Daniel Kaluuya, Steven Yeun It’s been an absolute joy watching Jordan Peele’s ascension from talented sketch comedian to the Oscar-winning filmmaker he is today. And this latest project from the king of modern thrillcore, Nope, looks like it’s going to be another gloriously uncomfortable watch. The plot antagonists appear to be of extraterrestrial origin, a new direction for Peele, but once again no doubt succinctly satirising some nuanced aspect of modern culture — whilst being absolutely petrifying in the process.
Mrs Harris goes to Paris Director: Anthony Fabian Cast: Lesley Manville, Lucas Bravo, Rose Williams, Jason Isaacs In 1950s London, a widowed cleaning lady (Lesley Manville) falls madly in love with a couture Dior dress, deciding she must have one of her own. After working to raise the funds to pursue her dream, she embarks on an adventure to Paris that will change not only her own outlook -- but the very future of the House of Dior. 52_What’s On
Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank Directors: Rob Minkoff, Mark Koetsier Cast: Michael Cera, Samuel L Jackson, Mel Brooks, Djimon Hounsoi A down-on-his-luck hound finds himself in a town full of cats who need a hero to defend them from a ruthless villain’s evil plot to wipe their village off the map. With help from a reluctant trainer, the underdog must assume the role of fearsome samurai and team up with the felines to save the day. The only problem is – they all hate dogs.
The Gray Man Directors: Joe Russo, Anthony Russo Cast: Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Dhanush, Ana de Armas, Billy Bob Thornton Ahead of its Netflix release, The Gray Man, starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas and Indian actor Dhanush, will have a limited cinematic run in the UAE. Based on the book series by Mark Greaney, the film follows CIA operative Court Gentry (Ryan Gosling), aka, Sierra Six who is plucked from a federal penitentiary and recruited by his handler, Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton). Six is now a target, hunted across the globe by Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a former cohort at the CIA, who will stop at nothing to take him out. What’s On_53

Escape the summer sun with an indoor swim...
wimming is one of the joys we can regularly enjoy during the winter, with easy access to plenty of pools, from the luxurious to the free. In summer swimming gets a bit trickier, with scorching temperatures putting us off going for a dip. Luckily there are several well-equipped indoor pools in the UAE, so you don’t need to lather on the SPF 50 just to do some lengths.

LASTMINUTE TRIP A luxury eco-resort within breathtaking landscapes – this is Six Senses Zighy Bay, Oman While What’s On’s staycation reviews are usually reserved for within the Emirates, an escape to Six Senses Zighy Bay is as easy as spending the weekend in Fujairah. Locationwise they’re neighbours, so you’ll just need to drive for two hours to an area technically classed as Sharjah, hop over the border, and into the mountain you go.
The look and feel Six Senses Zighy Bay is a remote resort next to Musandam. The rooms
Facilities and activities
The resort accomodation features a cluster of private villas, each with their own pool and in close proximity to the beach. Made mostly from stone and concrete, the resort feels like a luxurious Flintstones movie set, especially inside the villas. Each one is like a time capsule from the prehistoric era with a chic twist. The rooms are large and open plan, with a spacious sofa and living area, and a comfortable king-size bed in the middle. The bathroom features an enormous white stone tub and the option to shower indoors or out (under a steaming hot power shower that you’ll never want to leave). The outdoor space, meanwhile, feels private and cosy with large trees and plenty of nooks to relax in, but most guests will spend the majority of their stay soaking up the sun from the villa’s private infinity pool.
Upon arrival, guests are given infomation on the week’s upcoming workshops and activities, with everything from cheese and wine-tasting, to yoga, hand-line fishing and hiking on offer. Sustainability is a core focus for the resort, and filtered water is served from Six Senses’ glass bottles. During its Earth Lab experience, guests will learn how the resort remains eco-conscious, with tours of its on-site organic garden and opportunities to join ocean and beach clean-ups. Other key facilities include the only saltwater pool in the GCC, and the famed Six Senses Spa, which you can reach by bicycle (or buggy if it’s too hot). The spa offers a range of relaxing treatments, but the Wellness Screening –conducted by Dr Peeyush – comes highly recommended. It gives a full analysis of what’s going on inside. Your hands, feet and head are scanned to create an overall wellness

The food and drink Six dining outlets are spread across the resort. A trip to Sense on the Edge is a must-do (be sure to book in advance). Set on the mountain edge, the views are incredible and the dusky sky is breathtaking. Back at sea level, Summer House is a great option for dining. An international affair, highlights included the fillet steak, sea bass, tuna tartare and burrata. The Arabic restaurant, Spice Market, also hits the mark.
