EDITOR’S LETTER

I’m bored of summer. No, not the heat – I’m fine with that. I’ve lived in the Emirates long enough to appreciate that in the summer, it gets hot. No, I’m bored with the constant moaning about the fact that it’s summer. ‘Babes, this heat’… ‘Phew, it’s boiling out there’… Hot? In the desert? Quelle surprise. You’ll be telling me next that it can get a bit nippy at the North Pole, and there’s a good chance of rain in London. Life in Abu Dhabi doesn’t just stop because it is, admittedly, very hot outside (unless you’re an overcoat salesman, in which case I take it all back). To prove the point, this month – and in collaboration with DCT Abu Dhabi – we present our June issue packed with how to have fun in and out of the sun. With everything from great summer staycations to thrilling indoor activities, there’s something for everyone and really no need to fear summer. If that wasn’t enough, we’ve also packed into our usual mix of goodies to keep you occupied this month, including top cultural events, cinema picks, and exciting new summer brunches. More? How about eight – count ‘em, eight – pages of brilliant new restaurants you’ve probably not visited yet. Dive in now, and get ready for happy bellies – they’re guaranteed to chase away the summer blues. Enjoy the issue.

Impressive vegetarian upscale dining at… Avatara By now, we all know that going meatless doesn’t have to mean a diet of uninspired sandwiches and raw vegetable bowls. But Avatara, the unique dining experience from the team who brought us the illustrious Tresind Studio, proves that vegetarian cuisine can also be astutely gourmet. Just one glance over its Instagram page and you’ll see creative, modern Indian, vegetarian dishes the likes of which you’ll have never seen before. Get cozy inside Tresind Studio’s OG space on Sheikh Zayed Road, as chef Rahul Rana breaks down perceptions around vegetarian food one unique degustation menu at a time. @avatara

THIS MONTH WHAT’S ON LOVES… Escaping over the border to… Six Senses Zighy Bay In my six years in Dubai, I’d heard a lot about Six Senses Zighy Bay, but I never knew how easy it was to get there, until I went recently. Despite being in Oman, it’s actually right next to Fujairah, and took around two hours to drive to from Dubai. I couldn’t have felt further from our bustling city though, and it was exactly the paradisial break I was looking for. I spent my time lazing on the white sand, indulging in the restaurants and resetting my body in the spa, and came back feeling like a new woman. Stay tuned for our full review, if you’re thinking of booking a trip. @sixsenseszighybay

Sipping camelccino’s at… Emirates Palace There are few places grand enough to serve flakes of 24-carat gold on its hot beverages, but that’s exactly what you’ll get at Le Cafe, Emirates Palaces’ grand iteration of a lobby lounge. Itself flaked in plenty of gold, it’s one of the most decadent spots in the capital for a hot beverage. But as well as all of your traditional teas and coffees, you can order your gold-flaked cappuccino with a dash of camel milk, thus creating the one-of-a-kind camelccino. @emiratespalace

Preparing for the Dune sequel… by reading Dune Dune was easily one of the cinematic highlights of 2021 – the sci-fi screen adaption was epic in every sense of the word — but it left us on a bit of a spicy cliff-hanger. Utterly impatient as I am, I ordered the original literary trilogy from amazon.ae — the magnus opus of Frank Herbert. I realise that this is the purest form of spoiler hunting, and I too roll my eyes when people say ‘the book was way better’ — but trust me, the books are wayyyy better. And that speaks volumes. amazon.ae

The privacy in… The Pods Privacy can sometimes be hard to come by in a city as busy as Dubai. The Pods, a new restaurant in Bluewaters, promises just that. The clue is in the name – you’re in the kind of setting that would make Love is Blind producers jealous, as you’re given your own private dining pod, which can seat up to six, eight or 14 people. So, close the door on the outside world and enjoy pan-Asian food as well as creative cocktails – all at the press of a button. The Pods: the perfect place to take your social bubble. @thepodsdubai – Kohinoor Sahota, Online Reporter

Listening to classical music at… Dubai Opera If I struggle to write, start to feel anxious or just need some soft background music as I read, I find myself on YouTube popping on classical music. Dubai Opera is just wrapping up The InClassica International Music Festival. It has featured music from popular composers, including Verdi, Beethoven, Debussy, Mendelssohn, Strauss and Dvořák performed by 50 world-renowned soloists and 11 celebrated conductors. I’ll be there soaking up the last couple of days. @dubaiopera – Aarti Saundalkar, Junior Online Reporter What’s On_9

AE Famous is a What’s On page focusing on people out there making the scene. They’re out there around town, shaping the UAE into what it is, creating the culture, food and life around us. We asked them what’s good in the UAE. We asked them what’s bad in the UAE. We asked them to tell us more, more, more about their wonderful selves…

What originally brought you to Dubai? My husband has been a resident of Dubai for 17 years. When we met in my home town of Miami, which he was visiting at the time, he sold me the Dubai dream and thankfully it came true. We’re very excited to see you on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Dubai. How did you land the role? I was introduced to the casting director by my friend Chanel Ayan, we did a few rounds of interviews, and eventually got the job. Overall the experience has been a lot of fun because I’m doing it with my group of friends. Have you had a favourite moment during filming? One of my favorite moments was introducing my friends to 12_What’s On

my Jamaican culture. Tune in to the show to see all the fun we had. Has it been challenging running your business while filming? Yes, it has been extremely challenging running a business and taking care of my three little boys all while filming, but thankfully I never shy away from a challenge and I embrace growth. Can you tell us about your brand Mina Roe? Mina Roe is one of the world’s biggest maternity brands. We’re known for our trend-setting and sustainable clothing range. This summer, we’re announce that we’re expanding into post pregnancy ready-to-wear, which means that all women can experience our flattering and comfortable designs.

“THE MOST DUBAI THING I’VE DONE? EAT A 24-KARAT GOLD CAMEL BURGER AFTER A HELICOPTER RIDE TO A HOTEL.” What’s the most ‘Dubai’ thing you’ve ever done? The most Dubai thing I’ve done? Eat a 24-karat gold camel burger after a helicopter ride to a hotel.

What do you love about the UAE? It’s safety and diversity. I love that people from all different nationalities and religions live in love, peace and harmony. What frustrates you? Rush hour traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road. Do you reckon it’s your forever home? Inshallah! a The Real Housewives of Dubai from June 1. @lesamilan

You don’t see too many restaurants serving fusion food built from the culinary traditions of Italy and Japan. And that’s a shame, because at Akiba Dori, those gastronomic worlds collide in the most spectacular fashion. The result is a shockwave of outrageously tasty Japanese pizza and a collection of Tokyo street bites that have been given a lightly Roman remix. With three branches in Dubai, this one comes with its own bar, alfresco seating and the return of its soulbinding wagyu gyoza dish. a Yas Bay, Yas Island. Tel: (04) 770 7949. @akibadori

Cafe Del Mar

Winner of What’s On Abu Dhabi’s Indie Restaurant of the Year 2022, Antonia is bringing Pizza Al Taglio to the yard. A Roman variety of our favourite flatbread that literally means ‘pizza by the slice’. This pizzeria uses a base blend born of organic Italian flour and sourdough and comes in squares, making for some epic street eats. The ‘by-the-slice’ concept also means you can mix and match your topping choices, allowing you to blend classic pizza experiences such as diavola, burrata, and tartufo e funghi. Antonia also serves up poetic portions of authentic pasta, calamari, fresh salad options and, sweet pizzas (with Nutella of course). a Soul Beach, Building 9 Mamsha al Saadiyat. antoniarestaurant.com

Now open and serving up tastes baked under the Tuscan sun, Oii is a fresh gust of European culinary air. The latest venue from hospitality heavyweights Solutions Leisure Group – who also brought Asia Asia and Lock, Stock & Barrel to Yas Island – Central is a first-of-its-kind venue for Yas Bay, described as a ‘family entertainment and dining concept.’ Across 1,700 square feet, there’s an arcade, live music stage, plus a restaurant and bar, and most excitingly of all, a legit bowling alley. The considerable culinary talent of Chef Akmal has finally landed in the capital. Tazal describes itself as “a unique, brave and sophisticated twist on global cuisine with an Arabian touch.” Truthfully, we’ve no idea what that means – and the idea of ‘brave risotto’ is frankly terrifying – but the menu features pasta, burgers, short ribs, katsu, and shawarmas, which are many of our favourite things, so we’re willing to forgive the website waffle. a Al Qana. @tazaluae

Based in the capital’s home of unabashed elegance, Emirates Palace, and dressed to impress with princely interior design, Talea looks intent on bringing a fresh and regal energy to the city’s Italian dining scene. The concept comes from the Michelin-honoured chef Antonio Guido, and proposes a menu built around the theme of “Cucina di Famiglia” which, for those whose Italian is limited to hand gestures and football clubs, translates as ‘familystyle cuisine’. Alongside a top-tier collection of artisanal pizzas and handmade pasta options, you can expect a glittering assembly of rare Italian gastronomic gems. DIN TAI FUNG The denizens of dim sum. If you’re a fan of Chinese food, there’s a strong chance you’ll already be well acquainted with Din Tai Fung. The brand began its journey in Taiwan, but the appeal was enough to see it spread to 12 countries worldwide. Din Tai Fung offers a range of Taiwanese and Chinese food. Its pen-kitchens are probably perhaps best known for a range of flavour-filled dumplings. Devotees can knock chopsticks against meat, seafood and veg wontons, potstickers, shumai and juicy Chinese buns. LAUNG BY PEPPERMILL Come on down, the spice is right...

aung by Peppermill opened its doors to the public for the first time earlier this year. It’s a concept from (as you can probably guess) the team that brought you Peppermill, a tried and tested crowd favourite. We’re told that Laung trades in modern Indian cuisine with its own little signature twists and tinkerings, but these are phrases we hear chewed around so often that they’ve all but lost their flavour. We felt compelled to explore the menu of this new arrival in person, navigate its alleged twists, savour its touted tinkerings and see just how well it holds up against what we must acknowledge is healthy competition. You’ll find Laung on the first floor of Nation Towers Mall. It’s a thoughtfully designed modular space, with private dining rooms and a bright glass-encased

L

terrace that offers panoramic Corniche views. It’s a classic fine-dining set up, with white tablecloths and fancy furniture. We’re at the mercy of chef Munish Rana today, a man with big ambitions for the evolution of the menu. We start with an Indian interpretation of a classic tomato soup — it’s thick and creamy and glowing with gentle spicy sparks (Dhs29). Next up, a pairing of karare palak chaat (Dhs39) appears, served on slate. One of the pieces gives you a swift left hook of cooling yoghurt, the other counters with a sweet and sour swing of tamarind. Plates and slates whisked away, Chef Rana cheerfully transports us to a tandoor fusion dish. “It’s traditional tikka” he says, a playful glint in his eye “with a molten

European cheese marinade”. We admit to a cautious first bite. This feels like forbidden alchemy, but the palate experience is solid. It’s a wicked blend of spice and salt and gloriously gooey fondant fromage. After this, it’s dab moilee – tiger prawns in a creamy coconut curry, with a croquant touille (Dhs99). The curry is pitch perfect, the prawns are chunky and undeniably fresh, if perhaps a fraction overcooked. Alongside it we try a salmon tikka, served in a rich aromatic gravy. It’s bold, flakey, and an arm’s length from anything you’d find in your typical Indian bistro. Another standout dish. Chef Rana insists we try at least one dessert before we leave. We dig spoons into the gulab jamun, a sweet milk dumpling soaked in saffron milk. It’s as refreshing as monsoon rains, sweet and sticky with ripe plum pudding genes. A fond farewell to a highly enjoyable meal. a Level 1 Nation Towers Mall, Corniche Road, 11am to 11pm. OTORO

Chef Akmal Anuar makes his Abu Dhabi debut iners in Dubai are well versed in chef Akmal Anuar’s cuisine. Credited with putting 3Fils on the map (now ranked as the best restaurant in MENA by World’s 50 Best) he’s since put his passion into 11 Woodfire and Goldfish Sushi and Yakitori. Having successfully conquered Dubai, chef Anuar has turned his attention to the capital, with his first Abu Dhabi restaurant now open at Al Qana. Set in a row of waterfront-facing restaurants, there’s a stripped back, modern Izakaya feel to Otoro. The interiors are light and neutral and except a few strategically placed plants, the walls remain largely bare. We love the way all tables and booths are neatly arranged around the impressive show kitchen, and those looking for a front row seat for the culinary action can even perch up on stools at the counter. The restaurant is unlicensed, but there’s a handful of refreshing mocktails like the fruity and fresh Blooming Passion (Dhs32) as well as a selection of herbal teas, from which we pick a cup of Jasmine (Dhs22) while perusing the menu. We’re struck by how reasonably priced the menu is: maki rolls are all around the Dhs45 mark, kushiyaki’s are almost all under Dhs80, and aside from a duo of wagyu dishes, you won’t pay more than Dhs115 for a main. Our culinary adventure starts with a spinach and seaweed salad (Dhs35), a crunchy tower tossed in sesame dressing and topped with buckwheat, and the yellowtail carpaccio (Dhs70). The flavour sensation is outstanding:

D

green chilli, a light, fragrant leche de tigre, a sprinkling of mizuna and a wedge of lime we delight in squeezing over the yellowtail. Our only critique is that we’d have liked the fish to be cut slightly thinner. We head off-menu when our next dish arrives, a truly standout special that sees a bed of scallop carpaccio topped with delicate pieces of foie gras and heaped with summer truffle shavings. It’s an indulgent amalgam of rich flavours that should feel overpowering, but carefully handled it creates a plate of perfection. From the sushi selection, we prefer the signature fatty tuna otoro nigiri (Dhs80) to the wagyu nigiri (Dhs80), although both – and in fact all of the sushi options – can be enhanced with fine ingredients like caviar and uni.

While meat lovers might gravitate towards the chicken or wagyu kushiyaki’s, the miso nasu (Dhs42) is with the just-right balance of creamy centre and still-tender skin. A topping of katsuobushi flakes could transport you straight to an Izakaya in Osaka. If there’s one dish you must order at Otoro, make it the melt-inthe-mouth shabu shabu burger (Dhs110). A burger like no other, its moreish wagyu slices, perfectly toasted bun and buttery caramelised onion make every bite jucier than the last. We lick our fingers clean. If your stomach permits, a dark chocolate tart (Dhs46) is the dessert to order at Otoro. The 68 per cent chocolate showstopper sits in a sea of butterscotch sauce, topped with flakes of edible gold and sea salt. It’s a delight for any fans of a sweet and savoury combo. Otoro is a near faultless debut for chef Akmal Anuar in Abu Dhabi, with simple, fuss-free cuisine expertly executed in a way that lets the best-in-class ingredients do the talking.. a Otoro, Al Qana, Abu Dhabi, 12pm to 11pm daily. MEET THE CHEF

ENRIQUE GONZALEZ Director of Culinary at Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Resorts

I can’t remember exactly when I wanted to be a chef, but I was very young. I was inspired by my father who owned a restaurant that served traditional Spanish cuisine. One of my favourite restaurants is Gueyu Mar, a seafood restaurant in Asturias, Spain. They cook all of their seafood over an open wood fire. The food is simple, but the quality of ingredients is amazing. One of my most unforgettable meals before arriving in the UAE was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was the perfect preparation of the classic Peking duck service where they also served me wok stir-fried duck eggs with the shredded duck leg meat. It had such incredible flavour. My main influences come from my travels. Food is an integral part of culture and tradition. Here on the island, we grow fresh mulberries. When in season, I love to use them, not only in sweet preparations but also in savoury. Our chilled gazpacho soup with fresh mulberries is very nice. One of my favourite ingredients of all time is extra virgin olive oil. I call it ‘versatile liquid gold’. We’re currently working on revising the menus within our resorts on Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island, but one item we can’t touch is the club sandwich. It’s a classic. We offer different versions depending on the restaurant concept but I do love our lobster club sandwich. q @anantarasirbaniyas

CENTRAL, YAS BAY

A slice of the Big Apple strikes gold at Abu Dhabi’s new dining hub... hat can a restaurant do to stand out in Yas Bay’s ever-growing collection of international names and Michelin star talents? That’s exactly what we’re wondering as we head to Central, a new concept from hospitality heavyweights Solutions Leisure created just for Abu Dhabi. It’s bright, bold and bustling with people when we visit on a Friday night. Despite the warm temperatures, the water-facing terrace is more than half full with people making the most of the half-price happy hour. Inside, there’s a similar high energy, with families tucking into supersized burgers in cosy booths, gaggles of teenagers crowding around neon-lit arcade games and bowling alleys, and groups of friends perched on rainbowhued stools by the bar. It’s got the feel of a cool craft burger bar. Industrial wood and exposed brick are juxtaposed with neon signs and clashing pops of orange, yellow and turquoise. The menu is an appealing read for anyone who’s not calorie counting: there’s deep fried starters aplenty, pizzas, tacos and an extensive selection of ‘monster’ burgers. But catering to the increasingly health-conscious crowd, you’ll also find a selection of salads and poke bowls. The halloumi (Dhs55) is a generous stack of halloumi sticks, battered and deep fried and easy to dunk in sweet chilli sauce. Tender chipotle chicken tacos

W

40_What’s On

(Dhs65) with plenty of zingy house slaw and sour cream are a hit, while the slightly dry jerk spiced veal tacos (Dhs65) are more of a miss. A charred corn salad (Dhs65) is as flavourful as it is filling: a huge bowl of baby gem lettuce, avocado, sun-dried tomato, smoked almonds, parsley, balsamic dressing. We top ours with chicken (Dhs20). For mains, we keep it classic with a pepperoni pizza (Dhs75) and the classic burger (Dhs65), and happily devour every mouthful of both. A special mention should be given to the not-so-

humble onion rings (Dhs35) – crisp, crunchy and absolutely ginormous, they arrive hanging off a horizontal black pipe. Dessert is a must, and we’re hard pushed to pick only two. The s’mores (Dhs55) are a little too rich, and the marshmallow not quite gooey enough for our personal preference, but the peanut butter jelly French toast (Dhs45) more than makes up for it. This fancy twist on the American peanut butter and jelly sandwich gets a big thumbs up from us, thanks to its perfect ratio of light, spongy toast to sweet peanut butter cream. Central feels instantly inviting, and everything from the ‘Gram worthy decor to the endless gaming options and crowdpleasing menu are here to ensure that kids – big and small – are having fun from start to finish. a Central, Yas Bay, Yas Island, 4pm to 12am Mon to Thurs, 12pm to 3am Fri to Sun. @central_uae RATING Food B Atmosphere Price

FILM FILM

RELEASES NEWNEW RELEASES

DIRECTOR: Baz Luhrmann CAST: Austin Butler, Tom Hanks, Olivia DeJonge

Elvis Words: Miles Buckeridge

The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll gets the Luhrmann treatment Baz Luhrmann projects don’t come around often, but when they do, we’re borderline guaranteed a spectacle. His latest, out this month, is another celebration of music – a biopic with the limelight focused intently on the undisputed King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley. Taking the titular lead is Austin Butler — whose main claim to fame thus far

50_What’s On

was playing tussled high school crushes in both Hannah Montana and iCarly — a finer pedigree of teenage hearthrob, you’re unlikely to see. Despite initially offering only a vague resemblance to the legend, the trailer showcases a stage charisma that feels hauntingly accurate. Tom Hanks joins the cast as Colonel Tom Parker, the controversial figure who ‘discovered’ Elvis, became his manager and helped forge an icon. We’re given glimpses of a world charged with racial tension and the entertainment paradigm shift left in the wake of the first truly global megastar. We see what happens when that star’s fire begins to wane, and the internal void that opens when the lights go off.

In conservation with the stars of Elvis

AUSTIN BUTLER (Elvis Presley) What’s On: The film tracks Elvis’ life over quite a long period of time, with the character going through some big physical and psychological changes. What was your favourite Elvis era to play? Austin Butler: I don’t think I can list just one, but some of them that stick out in my mind, was the visceral animalistic nature of the ‘50s. There’s this one performance that we do in Russwood [Park, Tennesse], that almost feels like the birth of punk rock and it’s a version of Elvis we don’t get to see on video much. You see images of it, hear stories of him rolling around on the stage, and it’s like watching a wild animal, so that was a really fun one – just because it had that fire in it. And then later on, what has now become one of my favourites parts of his life – the ‘70s, with the big orchestra behind him, it was so incredible. Him singing Polk Salad Annie up on stage is one of the greatest live performances, I think, ever. I want people to see that because that’s really an exciting time in his life.

OLIVIA DEJONGE (Priscilla Presley) What’s On: After doing extensive research on your character, what do you think the public perception gets wrong about Priscilla? Olivia DeJonge: I think back then, when social media wasn’t around, the perception of her came through images that were somewhat curated. When you’re the wife of the most famous person in the world, I think you’re put into a box of beauty. And only that. But what was exciting for me was learning more about this fire and grit that she had. And, one of my favourite things that I learned about her was about a crazy fan who was waiting outside and

[Priscilla] went out ready to fight. That to me really flipped a switch on this angelic being that we’d solidified her as. In general, that’s what we miss about women in history, they’re multi-faceted and unapologetic and she’s feisty and I really like that about her.

Photo: Getty Images

BAZ LUHRMANN (Director) What’s On: It’s clear from the trailer that this film deals with some pretty big cultural themes. What lessons can be learned from the Elvis story? Baz Luhrmann: You can’t tell the Elvis Presley story without talking about race: no issue of race in America, no Elvis. He goes from being a truck driver at 20 years old to the most famous man on the planet, and right at that moment, desegregation is happening in the south and the powers that be want to stop it. Also, at that time, post-war, the young have money for the first time – they can buy records, they’re a market and Colonel [Tom Parker] knows that and the south is saying “you gotta stop that kid [Elvis] from jumping the race line. So when Elvis comes back from the army, gets his haircut and goes into the movies, that was the Colonel’s ploy. Elvis wanted to be a serious actor, but the Colonel makes him family-friendly. He eventually fights back, and reconnects with the thing he loved most. Thing is, he was a spiritual guy – his greatest love of all, was singing gospel. So this movie is not so much about a lesson, but I guarantee you, that any audience member that goes to see this story will have a reflection, a debate and engagement with those subjects and for me that makes it worthwhile.

CULTURE

A Day to Die DIRECTOR: Wes Miller CAST: Bruce Willis, Kevin Dillon, Brooke Butler Due to health reasons, this action spectacle will be one of Bruce Willis’ last scheduled releases, after an announcement that he’s retiring from acting. And its title sounds about as fittingly close to a Die Hard homage as you’re likely to find.

Directed by Wes Miller, Willis plays veteran parole officer Connor Connolly who becomes indebted to a local mob boss. To pay one’s dues, he must perform a series of heists all within 12 hours, before ultimately going up against a corrupt chief of police. Will it generate Oscar buzz? Eh, unlikely. Will it be an on-brand ‘farewell to the party, pal’ for one of the action genre’s best-loved ambassadors? We predict a big yippee-kay-yes.

Jurassic World Dominion DIRECTOR: Colin Trevorrow CAST: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum The Carnotaurus is out of the bag. Following the cataclysmic finale of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), human beings are now forced to coexist side-by-cageless-side with giant extinction-reversing murder lizards. This is the third film of the Jurassic World Series (and the sixth of the Jurassic Park saga overall) and sees Chris Pratt teaming up with OG dino dodgers Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum to help humanity avoid ending up as an extended velociraptor tasting menu. It’s great that they’ve got the band back together (sans Richard *sobs* Attenborough), but really at this point, if human beings haven’t learned to stop poking the Dilophosaurus nest, do we even deserve a happy ending? 52_What’s On

The Black Phone DIRECTOR: Scott Derrickson CAST: Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Jeremy Davis Scott Derrickson picked up this directing project after a conflict of interest with the Marvel team over where to take Doctor Strange in his Multiverse of Madness. The house of capes’ loss, was this haunting specter of psychological horror’s gain. The Black Phone is an abduction tale, where a young boy imprisoned in a dingy basement who, using a disconnected phone, is able to communicate with the past victims of his captor – the mysterious serial killer known as ‘Grabber’. The villain of the piece looks to be played eerily well by Ethan Hawke. From the trailer alone, we reckon we’ve racked up about a month’s worth of sleeping with the lights on.

Minions 2: The Rise of Gru DIRECTOR: Kyle Balda CAST: Steve Carell, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Taraji P Henson, Russell Brand This, of course, is a follow-up to 2015’s Despicable Me spin-off prequel, which followed the calamitous quest for purpose conducted by diminutive minions Kevin, Stuart, Bob. This movie’s role, in what we guess we’ll have to grudgingly refer to as the Despicable Me Universe, is the introduction of the minions into the life of a young Gru (once again voiced by Steve Carell). Before the shrink rays, the orphans and fluffy unicorns, we find Gru as an aspiring young offender who enlists the help of the minions following a failed attempt at joining the Vicious Six. The Six are a group of supervillains voiced by some considerable ‘80s and ‘90s action movie clout — JeanClaude Van Damme, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, and Danny Trejo. What’s On_53

Living the Thai life

The doors are finally open – it’s time to revisit one of southeast Asia’s most beloved treasures. First stop: Phuket

F

amous for its outstanding beaches, incredible food and affordable accommodation, Thailand has always been a top destination for travellers from the Middle East, and indeed the world, and now it’s finally time to get back to exploring what this amazing country has to offer. 58_What’s On

As every month sees further eases in entry requirements, current rules invite fully vaccinated travellers to enter the country simply by completing a Thai Pass and having valid health insurance. What’s On headed to Phuket, Thailand’s dazzling largest island, for a week of ocean adventures, Pad Thai, and tropical island breezes.

THE TO-DO LIST Party it up on Bangla Road Located in party-central Patong, Bangla Road is a pedestrianised street filled with bars, pubs and clubs on either side. The drinks are cheap, the music is loud and the attitudes are laid-back and loose. You’ll either love it or hate it, but one thing’s for sure, you’ll not have a dull night there.

Take a boat tour around the islands The pearly white beaches that surround Phuket are the island’s key treasures. Each beach is different, from the northwest’s upmarket Surin and Ao Bang Thao to the jungled Rawai on far south Phuket. One of the best – and easiest – ways to see the best parts of the island is by booking a private boat and letting your captain take you on a journey to secret coves. q nikornmarinetourphuket.com

Spend the day at Blue Tree Park

Eat all the street food you can

A resort style water park with artificial beaches, cliff jumps, zip wires, waterslides, ninja warrior courses and a skate park, Blue Tree Park is one of the best family day adventures to try in Phuket. It pretty much has everything a family could want. Entry costs just Dhs250 for a family of four. q bluetree.fun

Found on every corner of Phuket’s bustling streets are vendors selling freshly made pancakes, satays, sweetcorn and the like. It’s all pretty clean and extremely tasty. For an even more authentic experience, hit up the Phuket Weekend Night Market, where dozens of vendors come together selling different snacks and street food at criminally cheap prices.

Stroll around the Old Town Whilst many may head to the sunny streets of Patong – for bars, clubs and general hedonism – for a more authentic experience of Phuket, it’s worth going to the Old Town. You’ll find street after street of old, colourful, colonial-style mansions and townhouses hosting cute, cosy stores and eateries. It’s perfect for Instagram and a welcome change of pace compared with some of the more lively districts in the city. What’s On_59
