8_What’s On
There is plenty to love about the emirate that we call home, but high up on the list has to be the weather. As a Brit, I’m very much used to discussing the weather; it’s in our nature, whenever there’s a lull in any conversation, we’ll pipe up with an update (‘cold out, eh?’, ‘oh, that wind!’). Surprisingly, in a city that’s pretty much bathed in year round sunshine, the weather’s always a hot topic in Abu Dhabi, too – heaven forbid it should rain, and social media goes into a meltdown, while in the summer the UAE loves nothing better than a good car temperature gauge shot. It’s on its way – this week alone I’ve seen three of my friends proudly displaying their dashboard shots, and the numbers were all north of 35. And as this mag hits shelves from May 1, I think I’ve the right to declare summer in the UAE officially here. But fear not, Abu Dhabi – as seasoned sunshine veterans, we come prepared. This month’s What’s On Abu Dhabi is packed full of super relaxing ideas for enjoying life out of the sun, so head over to page 14 now for our rundown of the best spas in town, and p30 for a look at some of the city’s best museums and news on what’s to come in the world of culture. Some things in Abu Dhabi are great all year round, including our ever-growing food scene. This issue we reveal some of the best cheese and wine nights in the capital, plus exciting news on a brand new indoor entertainment centre in Yas Bay where you can play Pac Man or smash up skittles in between courses of burgers and s’mores. Abu Dhabi life – what’s not to love? Enjoy the issue.
Healthy meal planning with… Colour My Plate Some meal plans are good while others can be downright awful – and I’ve tried too many to count. But I believe I’ve sourced the best yet and it’s called Colour My Plate. Meals so far have included keto lasagna, salmon niçoise salads, and healthy kibbeh – and while portions are smaller, the quality of ingredients and flavour profiles are making this plan much easier to stick to. I’m paying Dhs2,620 for the five-day, lunch, dinner and snack package, and so far, it’s well worth every dirham. colourmyplate.ae
THIS MONTH WHAT’S ON LOVES… Soaking up the views at… Villamore The Kempinski Hotel & Residences Palm Jumeirah has given its restaurant, Villamore, an Insta-friendly upgrade. I’d suggest grabbing a table outdoors while you still can – weather permitting, of course. It’s all oh-so sophisticated. The Mediterranean vibes are strong, from the Breton-patterned sofas and sun loungers to the tasty tapas menu. If you order one thing, make it the duck breast – it’s return-worthy good. The best bit? The uninterrupted views of Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Marina. @villamoredubai

Eating anything Chef Moon cooks at… Sushisamba
– Kohinoor Sahota, Online Reporter
I began raving about Sushisamba three years before it opened its doors in Dubai. And with good reason. The What’s On award-winning restaurant is undeniably the best addition to Dubai’s dining scene in recent years, with its ambience and service all top-notch. But mostly, we come here for the food. The ever-humble executive chef Chef Moon Kyung Soo’s menu is truly faultless. My top picks? The Chilean seabass straight from the Robata, the flavour-packed Samba Rolls and the tasty yellowtail taquitos. @sushisambadubai
Working my way through the menu at… High Joint You recently named homegrown High Joint as your favourite burger spot in the city at the What’s On Awards 2022, and I am in full agreement. Despite being a bit of a purist when it comes to my usual burger selection (bun, beef patty, salad, sauce), their menu has shown me the benefits of going off-piste. The spicy mango slaw chicken burger, for example, taught me that fruit can be an acceptable burger topping. But its recent opening in Motor City’s new food hall has unlocked some wild taste experiences of which the double ribs high platter, with mesquite smoked ribs and truffle bacon mac and cheese, is a notable example. @high.joint
– Alice Holtham, Group Digital Editor
Decorating my home with… Assouline books I could be the last person on Instagram to get an Assouline book, but now I’m an unofficial member of the club and there’s no going back. These eye-catching coffee table books are as beautiful inside as they are on the outside, filled with stunning pictures of selected destinations. So far I have Capri, but I’ve also got my eye on Dubai and Ibiza to build my collection. @assouline – Elise Kerr, Deputy Editor
— Miles Buckeridge, Online Reporter
Rediscovering my love for… Old Dubai At What’s On, we love to tell you about all the latest and the hottest new openings in town, be it a new restaurant, hotel or attraction. However, as the saying goes, ‘old is gold’ and during a recent art event I was able to explore a part of Dubai I haven’t been to in a long time despite living so close by – Bur Dubai. It’s home to museums, art galleries and incredible restaurants that draw in the crowds from the other end of town. This month, you’ll most likely find me braving the rising temperatures and doing a whole lot more exploring of the historic neighbourhoods of Dubai. – Aarti Saundalkar, Junior Online Reporter What’s On_9

We are the founders of Suited & Booted, a bespoke tailoring company born in Dubai with Scottish roots. We aim to bring a modern twist to the concept of traditional tailoring. What inspired you to make the move to the UAE? We liked the idea of living somewhere that has more than four days of sunshine a year. His Highness is probably at the top of everyone’s dream customer list. We’re playing on his pitch, what an honour it would be to dress the boss. What’s your favourite thing to do outside of work? Like most young people in Dubai, we play the mental tug of war between enjoying the social scene or having a sensible night in. What do you love about the UAE? We love the people that we are surrounded by here, both clients and friends. Our network is full of driven and positive individuals. This combined with what Dubai has to offer is what makes the UAE such an exciting place to be. What stresses you out about the UAE? Understanding that not everyone wants to work 24/7 like us. At times, Dubai can make you feel like you’re going in circles to achieve something simple. Do you think you’ll stay in the UAE forever? The UAE will always be a part of the Suited & Booted story. It’s where the concept was born. We wanted to change people’s perception about tailoring and that started with Dubai. We have big ambitions to expand the business into other countries, but Dubai will always feel like a piece of home. q @suitedbooteddubai

t’s easy to get caught up in the frantic pace of modern living, but we ought to balance it with moments of calm and self care, too. Fortunately, there is no shortage of places specifically designed to do exactly that in Abu Dhabi. Nothing hits quite the same way as a spa day, which is why we’ve rounded up some of our favourite spas and treatments available in Abu Dhabi right now. Aaand relax…
Anantara Spa at Qasr Al Sarab Commune amongst the dunes of this luxurious deserthemmed resort. Despite its deliberate remote-seeming location, it’s only a 90-minute drive from Downtown Abu Dhabi which means you don’t even have to check in to bliss out. The hammam-equipped spa offers a full wellness menu; meditation and massage suites; an ice room and a Thai-style sala. Or not aching all over at the very least. Their massage menu is probably one of the most extensive in Abu Dhabi and offers highlights like salt stone techniques (Dhs811 for 90 minutes), shirodhara (Dhs680 for 60 minutes) and an express 30-minute neck and back once over for just Dhs333. MAROON 5
I
f it feels like Maroon 5 have been making music for decades, it’s truthfully because they have. Prior to forming in 2001, Adam Levine and his bandmates had been known as Kara’s Flowers since 1994 – a stellar career by any musical stretch. The band struggled to find their feet in the ‘90s, bouncing from genre to genre trying to discover the poprock-indie sound we know from them today. Under the new name of Maroon 5, their debut album Songs About Jane – released 20 years ago (and yet we still remember every word to This Love) – is what propelled the band into stardom, eventually going quadruple platinum in 2005. It Won’t Be Soon Before Long was the follow-up album, released in 2007 and welcomed features from Rihanna (on If I Never See Your Face Again) and a Mark Ronson remix of Wake Up Call that featured a verse from Mary J. Blige. Cross-genre collaborations became somewhat of a signature for the band, who have featured everyone from Stevie Nicks, Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B, to SZA, Future and Christina Aguilera, to name a few. Subsequent releases dominated the charts, cementing Maroon 5 in American pop culture, a statement even more true thanks to Levine’s eight-season stint as a coach on the American version of The Voice. His likeable persona is arguably attributable to the phenomenal success of Maroon 5, as his career delicately dances between building his own profile and his undeniable loyalty to the band. Achieving such longstanding success can only be possible with immense work and dedication, especially towards a fan base that has grown from adolescents to adults throughout the same time. Staying relevant across such a timespan is a sign of true talent, and something that can be said for only a handful of noughties musicians.
It should come as no surprise then that not only are Maroon 5 still touring, but they’ve also expanded their self-titled world tour to include the Middle East, as for the first time ever Maroon 5 will play in Abu Dhabi, taking to the stage at Etihad Arena on May 6. This will mark their third visit to the UAE, after performing in Dubai back in 2011 and at the Coca-Cola Arena in 2019. If the band’s 2019 Superbowl performance is anything to go by, fans should expect a big night, complete with all the bells and whistles, and the air filled with nostalgic anthems of the past
two decades, as well as newer tunes such as Beautiful Mistakes, Memories and Lifestyle. Tickets are already live, and selling fast, with the remaining availability starting from Dhs550. In Covid times, there are some rules to abide by, including showing proof of vaccination and a negative PCR test within 96 hours of the concert. Despite this though, we couldn’t be happier to have international artists back on our stages again. Fatboy Slim returns to Dubai to headline DXBeach this month

ummer is on its way, but just before it arrives, Zero Gravity has a very special gig planned. Legendary DJ Fatboy Slim is returning to Dubai for the first time since he headlined Party in the Park in 2019. Before Diplo, before Calvin Harris, before David Guetta, there was Fatboy Slim. Real name Norman Cook, the UK’s very own superstar DJ is 58 now, and no less able to get a crowd moving than when Praise You topped the charts 23 years ago. Even for those DXBeachgoers whose clubbing days are receding into the

metaphorical rear-view mirror at this point, Cook dropping throwback bangers like Right Here, Right Now, will get them straight back on the sandy dance floor. Starting out as a bassist in Indie band The Housemartins, Cook
achieved a number one single before transitioning into electronic music and picking up the stage name Fatboy Slim in 1996. From then on, he became the king of the ‘big beat’ genre, going on to release huge hits like Praise You and The

Rockafeller Skank. In fact, Cook continues to dominate the dance scene, delivering recent anthems, including Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat and All the Ladies. Last time he visited Dubai, Fatboy Slim told What’s On: “I love coming back to Dubai and it’s nice because you build up a rapport and a reputation with people. There’re a few places in the world that I do like coming back to again and again and Dubai is a very unique environment, mainly because of its expat community all living in a very beautiful but very new and young city.” Catch him live on the sand on Friday May 20. drinks from 1pm to 5pm. After 5pm the venue will start to fill up with party-goers keen to pick the perfect spot on the sand in front of the huge stage for the headlining show around 10pm. Tickets start from Dhs149 for early birds, Dhs199 for the second release, and
Dhs249 for the third release. Consider this as your cue to get in there quick. For the brunch package it’s Dhs399, which includes your entrance ticket to the main event in the evening. a DXBeach presents Fatboy Slim, Zero Gravity, Dubai, Friday May 20, 10am ‘til late, from Dhs149. 0-gravity. ae; platinumlist.net

e’ve got music festivals, food festivals, dance festivals, even camel beauty festivals. But none get our funny bone tickled quite like the Dubai Comedy Festival. This year the 11-day event has a strong line up: Russell Peters on May 12, Vir Das on May 13 and Jo Koy on May 14, followed by Josh Widdecombe on May 18 and Gad Elmaleh on May 20. These main gigs will be held in The Agenda, the new multi-purpose entertainment, exhibition and venue in Dubai Media City, and the CocaCola Arena. Other acts taking part in events dotted around town will be headed up local legends The Laughter Factory, who’ll host a whopping 10 shows across the duration of the festival bringing top comics from around the world, including John Fothergill, Aurie Styler, Ger Staunton and Dasiy Earl. Meet the main headliners...
RUSSELL PETERS WHEN: May 12, The Agenda After selling out the Coca-Cola Arena earlier this year, global comedy superstar Russell Peters returns to Dubai to launch the Dubai Comedy Festival on May 12 at The Agenda. This special return engagement of his wildly popular Act Your Age World Tour also features opening act Alingon Mitra and DJ Starting From Scratch. VIR DAS WHEN: May 13, The Agenda As India’s biggest stand-up comedian and a Bollywood star, Vir Das has now crossed over to become a global comedy sensation, filling an international vacancy for an authentic Indian perspective. Vir was also the first comedian from India to have a stand-up special on Netflix, which since resulted in a multispecial deal with the platform for it to be the exclusive distributor of his stand-up. Outside of his Bollywood films, Vir can be seen as an actor in spy dramedy Whiskey Cavalier, the Randall Park and Constance Wu starring sitcom Fresh Off the Boat, and the Netflix series Hasmukh, which Vir created and executive produced.
JO KOY WHEN: May 14, Coca-Cola Arena As one of today’s premiere stand-up comics, FilipinoAmerican star Jo Koy has come a long way from his modest beginnings performing at a Las Vegas coffee house to selling out the world’s most prestigious venues. No stranger to Dubai, having performed several times in the city since his first show here in 2019, Koy returns to perform his Funny is Funny world show at the Coca-Cola Arena. 28_What’s On
JOSH WIDDECOMBE WHEN: May 18, The Agenda One of the most familiar voices in British comedy heads to Dubai this month as one of the big headliners of Dubai Comedy Festival. Josh Widdicombe, host of The Last Leg and the incredibly successful Parenting Hell podcast, and panel show regular, is making fun of middle class life in Bit Much… with his takes on first-world problems. From jars of pesto to complaining about the local park, Josh jokes about his own life and the little things that really rile him up.
GAD ELMALEH WHEN: May 20, The Agenda (in French only) Gad Elmaleh can’t cross the street in Paris without stopping to pose for photos or sign autographs. The French comedian is a household name in his home country, and with so many Frenchspeaking expats in Dubai, it’s no wonder his tours in Dubai are sellouts. Seven years after his show Sans Tambour and an international tour covering 15 countries, Gad Elmaleh performs back in Dubai for the third time, with his new oneman show, D’ailleurs.

aadiyat Island could easily get by on looks alone. With its rugged sun-bleached beaches, turquoise surf, dolphin and turtle inhabitants and a vibrant gastronomic scene, it’s a very easy place to fall in love with at first sight. But its beauty goes deeper than that. The ongoing Saadiyat Cultural District project is curating a network of museums, galleries and heritage sites every bit as noteworthy as the priceless collections contained within them. Places of learning, places of appreciation and awe, places that honour the past and celebrate the future. Once finished, Saadiyat Cultural District will be one of the most densely packed, globally-relevant cultural centres in the world. If you’re curious about what’s coming soon, these are all the confirmed constructions currently underway.
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi On track for completion in 2025, the Frank Gehry designed Guggenheim Museum will add a jagged smear of swoon to the Saadiyat Cultural District skyline. True to the spirit of Guggenheim (and conceived in collaboration with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation), the plans for the building cut a contemporary, unconventional, but singularly beautiful design. Inside you’ll find 28 galleries across a 11,600 square metre expanse, there’s also 23,000 square metres of exhibition spaces staged within the distinctive cones and terraces attached to the building. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will exhibit a collection of modern and contemporary art with a special focus on pieces from the West Asia, North Africa, and South Asia (WANASA) region. The museum has been tasked with providing a platform for artists from the WANASA area, commissioning works from artists at the spear’s tip of creative innovation, and illuminating how “the interconnected histories and cultures” have helped shape our world.
Zayed National Museum Once completed, the Zayed National Museum will represent nothing less than an architectural marvel, a fitting home for the inspiring story of our nation and its visionary founder. Already the seat of so much cultural import, the breathtaking structure designed by Foster + Partners will include a 123-metre-high tower. The main gallery will be devoted to a collection of artefacts illuminating aspects of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his leadership journey through the country’s unification, and beyond. There will also be gallery space devoted to exhibitions on falconry and conservation, land and water, history and society, science and learning, faith and Islam, and it will host the grand Sheikh Zayed Library. Although we don’t have a projected completion date, work on the building began back in 2019.

Natural History Museum One of the biggest bits of cultural news so far this year, is the DCT’s confirmation that Abu Dhabi is getting a Natural History Museum. This will be the fourth museum at the Saadiyat Cultural District (after Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, and the Guggenheim), and is due to open its doors on Saadiyat Island in 2025. In addition to engaging exhibits curated to illuminate the universe’s 13.8 billion years of origin story, the site will also include a scientific research centre that will ‘undertake studies in zoology, palaeontology, marine biology, molecular research and earth sciences’. The project was announced by Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed, and promises to ‘help find solutions for the future of our planet.’ We also have context confirmation on two of the flagship objets d’awe — Stan, a 67-million-year-old tyrannosaurus rex skeleton and the seven billion year-old Murchison Meteorite (both of these specimens will be available to see at a special Manarat Al Saadiyat preview exhibition until May 12.

Situated on Saadiyat Island, the Abrahamic Family House is a mega project with an incredibly inspiring message. Inspired by the Document on Human Fraternity, supervised by the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity, and ‘followed closely by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam’, the Abrahamic Family House will comprise a mosque, church, and synagogue within the same space. The building was designed by architect Sir David Adjaye, and was tasked with capturing ‘the values shared between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam’. The endeavour was first announced back in 2019, by H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, but this latest update has given us the names of the worship centres. Within Abrahamic Family House you will find Imam AlTayeb Mosque, St. Francis Church, and Moses Ben Maimon Synagogue. The aim is that this project will symbolise and inspire tolerance, togetherness, fraternity, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
Louvre Abu Dhabi represents the cultural epicentre of the emirate, but after a truly astounding piece of news announced by local master developers, Aldar, it might soon represent the epicentre of your living room, too. Once complete, the Louvre Abu Dhabi Residences by Aldar will be a residential complex of 400 apartments, with an iconic address, stunning ocean views and next-door-neighbour-status to one of the world’s most impressive collections of art and historical artefacts. Included will be Le Salon Détente, a lounge for residents that will feature art curated in consultation with the experts at Louvre Abu Dhabi, a 12-seater Cinema Privé for private theatre experience, Spa Bien-être wellness centre, which will feature a gym, sauna rooms, spaces for yoga and meditation, and there will also be an indoor kids’ playroom, called, appropriately, the Creativité Room.

ZUMA ABU DHABI Hype-checking Japanese dining royalty
n the shadow of towering glass and steel shards on Al Maryah Island, you’ll find a collection of the city’s most covetous fine-dining restaurants. Today, we’re checking in for a reservation at one of its most famous names, Zuma. It’s been delighting diners since 2014, so we realise we’re not uncovering a potential hidden gem here — but as trusted custodians of the best things to do in the city we are duty-bound to periodically hype-check Abu Dhabi’s top restaurants. And to see whether reality still matches up to its legendary status. You can’t enter the venue on the restaurant floor. Instead, you’ll need to head to level three and make your way down, which already gives this modern Japanese establishment the privileged air of an elite member’s club. The interiors, too, feel like they’d lend themselves well to low evening light, but even now, in the lunchtime glow, the dark timber, leather and stone still manage to charm. The first round of dishes arrive — miso shiru (a tofu soup Dhs26), sliced yellowtail with ponzu, green chilli and pickled garlic (Dhs84) and suzuki no osashimi (sliced seabass with uzu, truffle and salmon roe, Dhs82). Japanese cuisine is often saddled with labels like subtle or delicate, and whilst this miso soup in front of us is both those things, the crudo fish dishes are anything but. They scream onto the palate with electric audacity, razor-sharp citrus, fragrant-earth truffle and balloon-pops
I
of deeply-fishy flavour from the roe. A meaty-crab salad arrives next, with greens and avocado. It’s joined by wagyu beef tataki with shaved truffle and ponzu (Dhs258), a signature starter, and one as rarely well-executed as it is here. It’s simple food, but the effort in ingredient procurement and presentation reaps just acclaim. Meanwhile, the impossibly light tempura rock shrimp (Dhs99) is served with a lime and chilli dip and it might just be the best we’ve ever tried. And as a piece of half-time theatre, our waiter arrives to grind Japanese horseradish at the table for the wasabi accompaniment to our course of nigiri. We’ve taken fatty tuna, uni and caviar (Dhs126); and salmon aburi, mentaiko sauce and lemon (Dhs96). The signature mains of miso-marinated black cod (Dhs196) and grade seven wagyu tenderloin (Dhs410) land on the table with sides of oyster mushrooms with butter and garlic, and Japanese sweetcorn with shiso butter (Dhs59).
Despite starting to feel like a fatty tuna nigiri ourselves, Zuma’s miso cod is a must-try, and should feature in your last supper dining bucket list. You’ll struggle to find such honey-toned harmony elsewhere. The tenderloin is executive class, and the sear brushes against perfect. The supporting cast of oaky, garlic perfumed mushrooms and deeply buttery, satisfyingly plump corn-on-a-stick, feel like they would be stars in any other show. But this is Zuma. Verdict: Zuma passes the hype-check with flying colours, and whilst it might not be within the average casual date night price range, there’s a very good reason it tops the list of picks for those special occasions. a The Galleria Al Maryah Island, daily noon to 3.30pm and 7pm to midnight. EMMY SQUARED
Sharp-edged pizzas and novelty burgers move into Yas Bay quare pizzas are having a moment in Abu Dhabi. This particular pizza parlour, Emmy Squared, is a popular US import that does a side hustle in burgers and street bites. And this Abu Dhabi location, found along the boardwalk of the Yas Bay Waterfront, marks an exciting first step for the brand outside North America.

38_What’s On
It’s a relatively tame space compared with some of the other Bay inhabitants. It’s stylish, sure, but there’s just less overt peacocking performed by the decor. Inside, the hazy-sky-blue walls are occasionally interrupted by wood pannels, a part-open kitchen and blocks of monochrome. Today we’re ordering a pizza and a burger, plus some side bites of ‘chicken crunchers’. It’s midweek so it’s not a particularly peak-bustle moment here at Emmy, but we’re still impressed by the speed at which the food arrives. Our burger, Le Big Matt (Dhs65), is served to the table with an elevated tray sitting above it to stage the pizza. We’re eating The Emmy (Dhs57), one of the white sauce-based pizzas and it comes topped with banana peppers, ranch sauce stripes and red onion. This is unmistakably American engineering. Underneath, the dough base is pure Detroit muscle, made with organic flour. It’s deep and buttery, offering a tailored crisp to the edges. But the toppings – they’re pure New York sass. We’ve opted for a relatively humble ensemble but it sings from each of the four sides of the
square. There’s warmth in the peppers, tang in the onion, and synaptic swells from the rich and creamy sauce. All the pizzas here are served with a pomodoro-based dipping sauce, that helps add a bit more depth to those last toppingfree mouthfuls. We’re slightly less awed by the burger, a food group that faces much fiercer competition in Abu Dhabi. It’s framed with a pretzel bun, which is more of a novelty than a revelation. The beef patty is thick and meaty, and the ‘Sammy sauce’ gives each bite a strong backbone, but in our opinion, there are better burgers elsewhere in Abu Dhabi. Verdict: If you’re craving pizza, Emmy Squared is leagues ahead of the usual suspects. They might not have reinvented the wheel, but they’ve certainly convinced us to be there, and eat square. a Yas Bay, Yas Island, daily noon to midnight. MEET THE CHEF
RICARDO TELLEZ
Chef de Cuisine, La Carnita The first dish I ever made from scratch was Bacalao. It’s a traditional dish that we have in Mexico on Christmas Eve. Bacalao is salted cod that you clean with fresh water and make into a stew with olives, parsley, garlic, onion and lots of olive oil. When I started my career, I really admired Massimo Bottura. I use everything I’ve learnt from the chefs I admired, to inspire new young chefs working with me. Yas Island is already a fantastic culinary destination so we’re so pleased to be part of it. The new dining experiences introduced at Yas Bay Waterfront will spark a bigger passion for food in the capital, and offer something for all tastes. The La Carnita brand is special because it blends Mexican street food, an urban design and oldschool hip-hop. The concept is completely different with no other outlets doing the same, making us extremely unique – something I am very proud of. Naturally, being Mexican I love our tacos and churros. In my opinion, and having tasted many iterations throughout my life, our dishes are up there with the best in the country. The flavours take me back to my childhood at home and that’s what we want our guests to experience, too. a La Carnita, Yas Bay, Yas Island. Tel: (050) 1858068. lacarnita.ae/ abu-dhabi

Cafe Del Mar

Barbecue brunch, beach and big Balearic beats... Yas Bay’s new beach club, Cafe Del Mar, lands in the capital with a 40-year legacy of delivering big beat experiences to a loyal tribe of jet-set vibe chasers. The journey began in Ibiza, at the dawn of the Balearic Island’s house music awakening, and since then has launched an uncountable number of ‘chilled house’ playlists, hosted almost every DJ hall-of-famer, and established itself as a genuine EDM phenomenon. This UAE outpost of the rave enclave is just a few months old, but, looking around, it already seems to have built up quite the following. It’s 1pm on a Saturday, under bright blue skies and, in the background, a tribal drum loop builds to a drop, and we’ve just picked up our towel for the Cafe Del Mar barbeque pool party. It’s busy. The beach lagoon with the swim-up bar is several rows of glinting sunglasses-on-heads deep, and it all feels very San Antonian. This aquatic-fiesta takes place between 1pm and 5pm every Saturday, and the price of Dhs499 includes free-flow select beverages, unlimited plates from the barbecue, pool access, towels and a lounger.
After a brief aperitif in the water, we head up to the bar deck to investigate the enticing aromas of flame-cooked fare. There isn’t a huge range of gastronomy to choose from – there are burgers, hot dogs, jumbo prawns, chicken fillets, steaks, veggie skewers, salad, fries, mash potatoes and that’s about it. Crucial to the equation, however, is the consideration that what is here is done well. It’s simple, keenly marinated, precision charred and it pairs perfectly with the vibe. And ‘the barbecue’ was always going to be secondary to ‘the party’ – this is Cafe Del Mar, where the drinks, soundtrack and pool are Ibiza-level chill. Maybe it has an old soul, but it almost feels like this place has been around for a while. Perhaps because it’s exactly the sort of venue that Abu Dhabi has been missing. With the sun sinking low and the speaker volume peaking, we promise we’ll leave after one last song. Not this one though, this one’s a tune. a Cafe Del Mar, Yas Bay Waterfront, pool party barbecue every Sat 1pm to 4pm, Dhs499. Tel: (050) 402 2283. @cafedelmarabudhabi What’s On_39

CANARY CLUB The newest, coolest spot in town, but with Joey Ghazal at the helm, did we expect anything less?
here’s a lot of expectation resting on the shoulders of Canary Club, the newest opening from Joey Ghazal, the restauranteur behind Dubai’s beloved The Maine restaurants. So it’s with excitement that we head to the grounds of JLT’s Banyan Tree Residences, during Canary Club’s second week of operation. A neon sign lit in canary yellow emblazoned on the side of the building tells us we’re in the right place. A trio of glamorous hostesses dressed in shimmering emerald green jumpsuits offer one of the warmest welcomes we’ve ever received. Our friends don’t even greet us like this. A short lift ride away and we’re transported from ’22 Dubai to ‘70s California. There’s no two ways about it – Canary Club looks fabulous. It’s a rattan, macrame and bamboo-lovers’ dream. Cosy booths are finished in dark leather and wood, there are botanicals climbing the stone

walls, and beaded curtains add some of that retro whimsy. Intricate details abound, and whoever the chandelier atelier is for all of Ghazal’s restaurants is a name we need in our contact book. The menu reads as an ode to California, with influences from Japan, Mexico and across Latin America. Ceviches, sushi, salads and bowls sit alongside a robata grill section, plus a collection of pizzas finished with divisive toppings like chicken and pineapple; short rib and burrata; and oyster mushroom. We start with a duo of ceviches, both perfectly presented. The yuzu scallop (Dhs95) is full of fruity flavour, with thin slivers of scallop covered in a cucumber yuzu, topped with crisp puffed rice and just a hint of red chilli. A Peruvian tropicola seabass ceviche (Dhs65) is another appetising mix of sweet and spice, with cubes of seabass, yellow pepper and passionfruit swimming in a light coconut milk. We opt for the spicy tuna (Dhs85) from the sushi options, served on a glazed plate shaped like a palm leaf. The taco-maki options all appeal, and having tried both the tuna belly with caviar and wasabi (Dhs120) and the wagyu tataki with seared foie gras (Dhs95) we don’t know why they’re not on more menus. Nori and sesame shaped into a taco shell is lined
with sticky rice, before being packed with the aforementioned toppings. From the mains, we choose to share the blackened cod (Dhs160) and a side of crunchy steamed broccolini (Dhs35), both of which are excellent. The mirin marinade is deliciously thick and adds a rich glaze to the cod. We order the flourless chocolate cake (Dhs58) to finish a fantastic meal, and it’s as indulgent as we’d hoped. The crunchy coconut base is topped with creamy chocolate and a sprinkling of sea salt, served with a perfectly-risen meringue. JLT is one of the city’s most exciting foodie neighbourhoods for homegrown restaurants, but Canary Club has found a gap in the market. And we’re clearly not the only ones that think so, with every seat in the house full within days of opening. It’s glitzy but not pretentious, has a menu that makes you want to come back for more, and the handpicked team are all genuinely out to make sure every guest has a good time. a Canary Club, Banyan Tree Residences, JLT, 12pm to 1am Sun to Thurs, 12pm to 2am Fri and Sat. OSSIANO
Is chef Gregoire Berger’s next chapter a story worth telling? ike many, chef Gregoire Berger used the pandemic to reset, departing Atlantis, The Palm after six years as chef de cuisine of Ossiano last year. But after a short stint back to his beloved Brittany, the acclaimed chef returns. But he’s brought back more than happy memories to Dubai, using France’s most northwestern region as the inspiration for his next chapter at Ossiano – an 11-waves tasting menu. Décor-wise, Ossiano remains Chef an underwater kingdom, with Gregoire Berger sparkling chandeliers and white marble tables that shimmer against the backdrop of the resort’s stunning aquarium. While the setting remains unchanged, the menu is entirely new. Not to chef Berger, of course, who laces his childhood and travels across the globe into Metanoia, the 11-waves tasting menu that pays homage to the ocean. To begin, ‘Snacks of the Sea’ include a crisp nori tartlet filled with unagi and chicharon, shaped into seaweed stems. Our favourite is the squid and anchovy, although the king prawn is delicious when dunked in a lobster aioli. Not long after they’ve been cleared, a bowl bubbling with dry ice signals the arrival of our next ‘wave’, a dish of creamy cauliflower, cubes of fresh trout and an airy seawater foam that adds a
L
welcome salty taste. We’ve been following the menu thus far, but chef surprises us next with a secret dish, which he says reflects his ethos that life begins at the end of your comfort zone. Suffice to say, we weren’t expecting a plate of fine slivers of jellyfish, ebi shrimp and oyster seaweed, but it’s a taste sensation. Returning back to the menu with a delicious Brittany brown crab that’s fused with fragrant kari gosse, a combination of popular Moroccan spices – an ode to Berger’s wife’s heritage and the three years they spent there. Each ‘wave’ provides insight into chef Berger and his passion for ingredients, but it’s when we’re invited to the kitchen mid-meal that we get a real feel for the life of this culinary mastermind. Here, he presents a sorbet made from leaves that grew at his grandmother’s Brittany home. It has a hint of lemongrass and chili with a white chocolate coating. We lick the spoon clean. The following courses are presented on plates that further play into the narrative. A plate, designed to look like crashing waves, is the base for a lightly seared langoustine with sea
lettuce pesto; and a piping hot dashi, one of the few ingredients not plucked within a 50km radius of Brittany, is served in a whelk shell. Even the scallop, sourced from Rade de Brest, features a potent truffle and artichoke topping designed to look like frost over the Burgundy countryside. The concluding courses are some of chef Berger’s finest work. The Patagonian toothfish, a challenge to source but one of the standouts, is served with a flavourpacked seaweed and garlic emulsion. To finish, a spin on his daughter’s favourite dessert, an apple tart with a biscuit base and white chocolate ganache. Everything about the design of the dishes and the symbolic plates they’re presented on, to the way the staff recite chef Berger’s story with impeccable finesse, is expertly curated. After news that Michelin is ready to shower our fair city with stars this June, here’s hoping that at least one is headed Ossiano’s way. a Atlantis, The Palm, daily 6pm to 12am, from Dhs1,095. SUMMER MOVIES Roll cameras, this summer’s blockbusters are gonna cause an absolute scene...
T
he summer release window is traditionally the time of year when the big studios line up to release their blockbusters, marking a fairly intense change from the art house-style of the pre-Oscars slew. Out with the monochrome, monologuing and subtitles, and in with the summer furor, conceived to get posteriors on seats with big stars and big receipts. They’re action-packed, CGI enhanced, mega budget flights of whimsy filled with gratuitous shots of slow walks away from explosions.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness [EXPECTED: May 6, 2022] A lot has happened in the MCU since Dr Stephen Strange first took a running leap into the bilious technicolor eddies of the multiverse back in 2016. We’ve got a new Captain America, half of all life in the universe was snapped out and then back into existence, and then they did that Spider-Man finger point meme thing. But with the chaotic divergent fall-out from the conclusion of Disney+ series Loki, and the dizzying climax of SpiderMan: No Way Home, along with the threat of a mysterious and powerful new antagonist, there’s no rest for the good doctor, who has fourteen million, six hundred and five problems, and we predict the Scarlet Witch might well just be one. 50_What’s On
Legally Blonde 3 [EXPECTED: May 20, 2022] On paper, the premise of the original Legally Blonde movie (2001) doesn’t sound like the formula for an enduring cult classic — girl falls for guy, girl gets guy, couple split, girl attempts to win back guy by putting herself through Harvard Law School and absolutely bossing a legal career. But 21 years, a sequel and a Broadway musical spin-off later and the public’s hunger for the Reese Witherspoon interpretation of Elle Woods has ‘sustained’ without ‘objection’. In fact, despite there being next-to-no plot details anywhere out there in internet land, this third movie, which includes writing credits for the outrageously talented Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor, has already generated quite the buzz.
Top Gun: Maverick [EXPECTED: May 22, 2022] On initial inspection, this movie has some worrying pockets of potential turbulence. It’s a sequel arriving a full three-and-a-half decades after the original, its main star is now nearly 60 (although still somehow manages to look like an Athenian carving), and the trailer teases sections of dialogue that are so spine-tingling corny you could pop them in a kettle and serve them in a concessions stand. The release has also been pushed back several times over the past three years. This time around, the unteachable has become the teacher. Maverick, the impossibly talented flight school clown has been ordered to train four fresh recruits. Of course we’re going to watch it, and of course we’ll revel in its retro-kitsch, nostalgic fun. Weapons hot, it’s time to buzz the tower for one last run. It’s what Goose would have wanted.
Jurassic World Dominion [EXPECTED: June 10, 2022] The Carnotaurus is out of the bag. Following the cataclysmic finale of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), human beings are now forced to coexist in a world with giant murder lizards. This is the third film of the Jurassic World Series (and the sixth of the Jurassic Park saga overall) and sees Chris Pratt teaming up with OG dino dodgers Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum to help humanity avoid ending up as an extended velociraptor tasting menu. It’s great that they’ve got the band back together (sans Richard *sobs* Attenborough), but really at this point, if human beings haven’t learned to stop poking the dilophosaurus nest, do we even deserve a happy ending? CULTURE
Where The Crawdads Sing [EXPECTED: June 15, 2022] Adapted from the brilliant Delia Owens novel of the same name, Where The Crawdads Sing is directed by Olivia Newman and stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Taylor John Smith and Harris Dickinson. Our story begins in the rural hinterlands of 1950s North Carolina — a place in that epoch not known for judicial integrity. Kya, a young and modestly educated girl, is accused of murdering an abusive lover, and whilst this visual interpretation will lose some substance without the glowing descriptive prose of the book, we’re still looking forward to watching the tense construction of doubt and suspicion play out on the big screen.
Lightyear [EXPECTED: June 17, 2022] Before infinity, this Pixar origin story chronicles the genesis of Buzz Lightyear. The almostimpossible-to-dislike Chris Evans is taking the lead on this animated epic, and puts in a studied ‘Tim Allen’ voice performance. Our hero Buzz leads an exodus mission, attempting to save the remaining human inhabitants of a distant colony planet, as it’s slowly reclaimed by a rival community of tentacled inhabitants. And this time, there’s no Woody to scoop him up and gallop away to safety. The trailer is filled with that trademark, multi-level Disney humour and subtle nods to Toy Story. And it’s a Pixar legacy project, so in terms of quality of craft, and box office performance, this is as close to sure thing as you’ll find in cinema. 52_What’s On
Elvis [EXPECTED: June 24, 2022] Baz Luhrmann projects don’t come around that often, but when they do, you are borderline guaranteed a spectacle. His latest, is another celebration of music – a biopic with the limelight focused intently on the undisputed king of rock and roll, Elvis Presley. Taking the titular lead is Austin Butler. Despite initially offering only a passing resemblance to the legend, the trailer showcases a stage charisma that feels hauntingly accurate. Tom Hanks joins the cast as Colonel Tom Parker, the man who ‘discovered’ Elvis, became his manager and helped carve an icon. We’re given glimpses of a world charged with racial tension, the entertainment paradigm shift left in the wake of the first truly global megastar, and the internal void that opens when the lights go off.
Bullet Train [EXPECTED: July 29, 2022] Based on a Kōtarō Isaka novel, directed by David ‘John Wick’ Leitch and starring Brad Pitt in the lead role, there are a lot of reasons why we’re excited about Bullet Train. It’s a heist movie, based on a train with a hitman looking to retire, but is dragged back in for one last score. Ok, it’s not the most original premise, but the elements are there for an action classic, and for that reason, you son of a gun, we’re in.
Thor: Love and Thunder [EXPECTED: July 8, 2022] Taika Waititi’s second crack at Asgardian magic, Thor: Love and Thunder, reunites us with battle-worn Scandinavian deity, and Avenger, Thor. Despite opting out of the third film in the Saga, Thor: Ragnarok, Natalie Portman returns as Jane Foster and if this movie follows a Mighty Thor comic trajectory as Waititi has hinted at, we’re highly likely to see Portman donning her own cape and becoming an avatar of the thunder lord herself. Villainy is supplied by Christian Bale, who’s set to hit screens as Gorr, a bad guy with pretty lofty mission aspirations, even for a Marvel character, and everyone’s favourite ragtag bunch of space bandits, The Guardians of the Galaxy, are also slated to appear. We’ve got nothing but love for the way Waititi tells his stories on screen, how his humour and abstract asides add to the MCU’s tapestry rather than pick away its threads. What’s On_53

Take a hike
Whether you’re hiking with children or a first-timer, there’s a mountain out there waiting for you to scale…
I
f you’re on the hunt for an adventurous getaway, pack up the hiking gear and take a drive down to the mountains. The UAE is packed with wilderness and is home to a number of amazing hiking trails. They’re beautiful, they’re all unique, and they get you outside to enjoy the season. They are also free. Here are five hiking trails in the UAE to go conquer
01
Jebel Hafeet Great for: Advanced hikers Coordinates: 24.098936, 55.748944 (Green Mubazzarah Park); 24.055854, 55.798625 (Jebel Hafeet Desert Park) Situated in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi’s only mountainous region, Jebel Hafeet offers a variety of rewarding hikes. There’s the Green Mubazzarah Park, but the park may be closed due to covid restrictions so do your research before you pick this trail. There’s also the ‘smuggler’s route’ which commences from the Desert Park on the far side of the mountain. Both routes are considered intermediate with some loose rocks, therefore not advised for children or first-timers.
02
Wadi Shawka Great for: Beginners Coordinates: 25.103958, 56.039260 One of the closest hiking spots to Dubai, Wadi Shawka is just an hour away and is great for beginners. Shawka has several varied routes. You can choose from a quick ramble or make a day of it and include the Shawka pools, too. Whichever you pick you’ll enjoy impressive, panoramic views (aka several ‘Gram opportunities). Head to the Shawka Dam and either take the stairs directly to the summit or choose one of the trails, easily visible from the small parking area. The trails are well marked out, making it difficult to get lost and safe for families with children. It’s dog-friendly, too, but keep them on a leash as you don’t want them to wander too far. 56_What’s On

03
Hatta Mountain Trails Great for: Family-fun hikes Coordinates: 24.815061, 56.160270 Dubai’s largest national park, Hatta is a popular spot for families and friends for several reasons, including the fun adventure centre, Hatta Wadi Hub. It’s also home to several hiking trails where you can explore the Hajar Mountains. There are four trails to choose from: easy, moderate, difficult and severe. The routes spread over nearly 33km and you can expect undulating rugged hills and wadis, dams, farms, a heritage village and trails that even go up to the famous Hatta sign. This is one of the few hikes that have toilet facilities, so is perfect for families with young children. There are even spots where you can enjoy a picnic, set up camp, explore heritage sites and much more.

Al Rabi Mountain Trail

Jebel Jais Great for: Outstanding panoramas Coordinates: 25.903435, 56.140985 (lower trails); 25.938134,56.131498 (upper trails) The UAE’s tallest mountain, Jebel Jais is split into two hiking areas with a total of six hiking trails available at varying difficulty levels. The lower segment has five trails for varying abilities, starting from 0.7km (Farfaar trail) up to 6km (Samar trail). Hikes are well marked out but if you prefer to have some supervision, Beyond Action (beyondaction.ae), Challenging Adventure (challengingadventure.com) and Adventurati Outdoor (adventuratioutdoor.com) all offer guided tours. The upper trail is a bit more demanding with a steep start. However, the track is well defined making it difficult to lose your way. This path will lead you to the north and south summits, where you have outstanding vistas from the highest points in the UAE. Thanks to huge efforts from the Ras Al Khaimah government, Jebel Jais is a hub for thrill-seekers. It also hosts the country’s highest restaurant, 1484 by Puro, named so after its height above sea level.
Great for: A dip in Khorfakkan beach post-hike Coordinates: 25.339488, 56.359157 Situated on the east coast, overlooking Khorfakkan town and the Gulf of Oman, Al Rabi Mountain trail is possibly one of the most popular and easy hikes in the UAE. The trail is clearly marked and you’ll be treated to a spectacular sunrise view. Do note the trail does get steep at times, but you’ll have the Hajar mountains and other Khorfakkan landmarks to keep you going. It takes about three hours to complete the 6km track when taking it on at a moderate pace. While there’s a small car park at Al Rabi Tower, it’s well-advised to park down the hill in the long term parking.

LASTMINUTE TRIP An island paradise that’s worth the splurge at Anantara World Islands Dubai Resort Thai-born luxury hotel brand Anantara has done a world first in opening its island resort on the most southernly point of the World Islands. The first hotel to open within the archipelago, villas with private pools, unique experiences and a tropical spa all offer a slice of blissful island living.
The look and feel Drawing on Anantara’s Thai roots, there’s a tropical feel from the moment your feet touch the sparkling shores of the island. A red carpet unfurls from the jetty to a shaded welcome centre where guests are greeted with freshly-cut coconuts. You can navigate the island on foot or by buggy. There’s a rustic, barefoot luxury feel about all of the central areas: palm trees surround the swimming pool, a growing garden spills down to the beach, there’s even a wooden swing in the water on either side of the island. It’s all about embracing the serenity.
The rooms In phase one, 70 villas are open. On the city-facing side are one-bedroom garden pool villas, and on the opposite side of the island you’ll find one and two-bedroom villas with beach access, facing the rest of the World Islands. All villas have the same rustic yet light aesthetic. Many come with a private pool on the wooden deck. Of course, as a five-star resort, the modern amenities are here, too, with a Bluetooth speaker and a smart TV among the luxurious features.
Facilities and activities Whether you’re looking for a drop-and-flop beach break or an action-packed itinerary, you can do as much or as little as you like. 66_What’s On
“THERE’S A RUSTIC, BAREFOOT LUXURY FEEL... IT’S ALL ABOUT EMBRACING THE SERENITY” There’s a large lagoon-style pool at the centre of the resort and loungers lining the seafront, or at the watersports centre guests can book pedalo trips, jet skiing or a banana boat ride. Don’t miss a trip to the Anantara Spa for a relaxing lomi lomi massage, which can also be arranged at the beach under the shade of a spa cabana. Villa hosts can also arrange unique experiences, such as a cinema under the stars, where you can cosy up under a blanket and watch a classic film, with snacks and bubbly.
The food and drinks Most of the culinary action happens at Helios, with relaxed oceanside dining offered for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s got a nautical colour palette that’s appropriate for the seaside setting, and a breakfast buffet pairs well with a la carte options of eggs endless ways and fluffy
French toast with fresh berries and cream. At lunchtime, the menu is Mediterranean leaning, with items such as freshly shucked oysters, a creamy crab and lobster toast, and a cheesy stone-baked pizza flaked with truffle. For dinner, a meal at Qamar shouldn’t be missed, with a fusion of Arabic and Indian dishes presented on a Levantine-inspired terrace that benefits from one of the best sunset views on the island. Bespoke dining experiences – an Anantara signature – can also be arranged by villa hosts within the Instagrammable private dining bubble or on a unique Hamacland, where gourmet bites are enjoyed on a floating lounge off the island shore. a Anantara World Islands Dubai
