EDITOR’S LETTER

SO THIS IS IT...

This, right here, is the month. We’ve done wind and the rain, but we’ve not quite hit the searing summer sun (although it’s in the post), meaning that this month, right now, is the perfect month for Abu Dhabi weather. March is glorious. Like the third of the three bears’ porridge, the weather in March is not too hot, not too cold, but just right. This, people, is the month to get outdoors and enjoy the kind of weather that makes the folks back home green with envy. But what to do? Hit the pool, that’s what – so turn to page 12 for six glorious pages of the best pools in town, together with their best deals. We also welcome a new, huge event to our shores this month – the Middle East Film & Comic Con comes to Abu Dhabi for the first time with a huge line-up of gaming and TV stars. Find out who on page 30. And, of course, this month marks the end of Expo 2020 Dubai – an event I’m sure we can all agree has been an incredible testament to the country we call home. Check out our bucket list of things to do there before it’s too late. So, go, get outside, and make the most of March, the month that is the UAE’s best weather month*. Enjoy the issue.

*I wrote this at the end of February. If, for some reason, the weather actually turns out to be awful, then please just ignore all that above, yeah? Thanks very much. 8_What’s On

Wadi Showka

THIS MONTH WHAT’S ON LOVES…

Hiking has always been a popular activity in the UAE but it blew up during the pandemic. It’s unsurprising really, with so many beautiful trails, wadis and coastal routes to explore. But it can be a bit intimidating for beginners. The Wadi Showka trail is a lovely route for hiking novices. Head to the Wadi Showka Dam, and park up on the side of the road (where you’ll find plenty of other cars parked). Then, use the Wiki Loc app to direct you. Our route was very manageable with gentle slopes, clear paths and it only took around two hours to complete. wikiloc.com – Laura Coughlin, Head of Content

Stouff Beirut Abu Dhabi’s culinary scene has had a real shake-up with the arrival of destinations such as Mamsha Al Saadiyat and Yas Bay. But away from the big new destinations there are noteworthy new openings to add to your culinary bucket list, like Stouff Beirut. It opened its doors in November, and on a mid-week lunchtime visit its botanical interiors are already filled with diners. The freshly baked hot mezze and woodfire pizzas are great but what I love about Stouff is chef Sharbel Akiki’s passion for produce – jams, oils, cheeses and more are all made on-site. @stouffbeirut – Alice Holtham, Group Digital Editor

Il Cafe, Bulgari Resort Dubai One of my favourite hidden breakfast spots is the stunning Il Cafe at Bulgari Resort Dubai. Get there early enough for a table out by the water and watch as the yachts sail out to sea. A Milano breakfast platter is Dhs165 and big enough for two to share, including a tea or coffee, bakery basket, granola, fresh fruit and eggs any style. If you’re still hungry, add on a French toast (I promise you won’t be disappointed). bulgarihotels.com

Poke bowls

It’s been a while since I’ve ventured down to City Walk. A recent visit to Galloire Art Gallery – a new contemporary art gallery in the cool neighbourhood, had me asking myself why I didn’t visit more often. There’s much to discover and enjoy, from dining, shopping and entertainment. You’ll most likely find me here again over a coming weekend or right after work unwinding and soaking in the cool vibes. @citywalkdubai.

Is it pronounced poke? Poh-kay? Pocci? I have no idea, but I am a devotee of these part-salad-part-sashimi Polynesian bowls of wonder stuff. My favourite discovery is ‘Build Your Own Poke’ via Deliveroo. They offer a range of salad/rice bases, proteins (including beef tenderloin), marinades (the truffle ponzu is life), and sauce (shout out to the umami aioli), and the pricing is decent. 100 per cent would poke on Facebook. Poh-kay on Facebook? Whatever. deliveroo.ae

Iris Lounge

1

The Local – Australia Pavilion So far our favourite party spot at Expo, The Local at the Australia Pavilion (close to the Mobility parking entrance) whips up top Aussie tucker (order the chips with chicken salt, and the vegemite cheese toastie) and a huge drinks menu offering everything from Aussie wines and ales to ‘dark and stormy’ cocktails. The outdoor courtyard is cradled by the Australian Pavilion, offering welcome shade during the hotter hours, too. Location: Near entrance of Mobility Parking @expo2020australia

2

BeHappy – Belgium Pavilion Aside from the ridiculously good Belgian waffles and fries available on the ground level of the Belgian Pavilion (located in the Mobility District), you should also head to the rooftop and check out Be Lounge Rooftop Terrace and Brasserie for a range of Belgian classic bites (hello, cheesy croquettes and mussel pots), plus a range of cocktails and Belgian ales. Mondays are ladies’ night, which includes three drinks (based on a Dhs100 minimum spend) from 6pm. Location: Inside Mobility District @belgianpavilion_expo2020dubai 24_What’s On

Iris Lounge is a twostorey standalone bar close to the UAE Pavilion. The top floor balcony overlooks Al Forsan Park and if you’re lucky you’ll time it right to see a performance at the amphitheatre. Downstairs, meanwhile, is a family-friendly area serving a range of Mediterranean and Japanese bar bites, and there’s a large cocktail menu, too. @irisexpo

Alkebulan boldly claims to be the world’s first African food hall. And there is certainly a sense of uncharted waters here, as the impressive two-storey site at Expo 2020 houses 10 chef-led concepts and two additional bars. Both bars are located on the first floor flanking the food hall. The first is Jiko – a cocktail concept whipped up by the team from luxury Nairobi boutique hotel Tribe. The second is Bar Cane, curated by Chef Coco, which utilises African spices to make exclusive cocktails. Location: Jubilee Park @alkebulandininghall

Tiaki – New Zealand Pavilion 4

The Irish Village Located in Jubilee Park, and naturally next to the Ireland Pavilion, The Irish Village brings a recreation of its iconic Garhoud branch, complete with live music and award-winning pub grub to Expo at this fully-outdoor space. Location: Jubilee Park, next to Ireland Pavilion @theirishvillage

Tiaki has been one of the big names on everyone’s radar since the opening of Expo 2020, and for good reason. Much thought has gone into the food menu at the New Zealand Pavilion’s restaurant and bar, where you’ll find everything from sustainably sourced New Zealand hoki fillet and fries, New Zealand pastureraised venison, and Marlborough greenshell mussels. But the drinks, served in the restaurant and in the cosy bar/lounge area, are just as exciting, with a range of New Zealand white wines and ales on offer. The Middle East Film and Comic Con (MEFCC) has grown from humble beginnings to become the biggest pop culture phenomenon in the region. Here’s exactly what you can look forward to

COMIC CON

The celebrities Let’s be honest – the thing that gets us most excited about the upcoming Comic Con is the chance to get within photo (or even selfie) distance of our favourite film and TV stars. Headlining this year is British actress Nathalie Emmanuel, better known as Missandei from Game of Thrones. She’ll be joining MEFCC on March 4 and 5, as will Giancarlo Esposito. He is best known for his role as El Presidente in first-person shooter game Far Cry 6, and for portraying Gus Fring in the crime drama series Breaking Bad. Meanwhile, Jon Bernthal, star of horror TV series The Walking Dead, and hit movies The Unforgivable and Baby Driver joins the event on March 5 and 6, along with actress Ming-Na Wen, the voice from Disney’s Mulan and Aki Ross in Final Fantasy, and Michael Rooker, best known for his portrayal of Yondu Udonta in the blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Barry Keoghan, best-known for playing Druig in the Marvel superhero film Eternals, also makes an appearance this year, alongside Kevin Conroy, the voice behind Batman in Batman: The Animated Series. Finally, a veteran star in the gaming world rounds off the celebrity headliners. You know Mario. Who could forget the cheery “woo-hoos!” of Nintendo’s most beloved video game character? Now meet Charles Martinet, the voice behind the iconic mustachioed man. Martinet not only voiced Mario, but he also created the voices for Wario, Luigi and even Donkey Kong. He’ll be at Comic Con all weekend-long.

The cosplayers If the closest you get to fancy dress is a half-hearted trip to Mr Ben’s when the Rugby Sevens roll around, you are missing out. Middle East Film and Comic Con is a time when fans can really go wild with the costumes. But as well as getting to dig out your Stormtrooper suit, you can also admire the handy work of the professional cosplayers, who’ll hit the mainstage to compete in daily contests.

EXTRA ABU DHABI

GOLD CAPPUCCINOS AT LE CAFÉ Casually sipping a cappuccino sprinkled with real 23-carat gold flakes is one of the most ridiculous and quintessentially ‘Abu Dhabi’ experiences, and everyone has to try it at least once. Sit back and relax in the palatial grounds or ornate lobby of Emirates Palace, take dozens of photos and try to stretch out your Dhs75 coffee for as long as possible. If you’re all about this vibe, you may as well go all out and tick off the 23-carat gold camel burger while you’re at it. a Emirates Palace. 8am to 11pm. Tel: (0)2 690 7999. @emiratespalace

Edible art at Brunch & Cake There’s lots of competition for the most ‘Instagrammable café in Abu Dhabi’, but bohochic Brunch and Cake might just about win. However, it’s the whimsical hotspot’s love for elaborate edible art that has really got people talking. Intricately carved avocado roses are served with poached eggs, sandwiches are adorned with decorative palm trees, lobster tails poke jauntily out of pizzas and you’re unlucky if your beverage comes totally petal-free. It’s all very good fun and, despite the fact that style is arguably prioritised over substance, the food is really delicious, too. a Marsa Al Bateen. 9am to 11.30pm. Tel: (0)2 575 4880. @brunchandcakeuae

Expensive caviar at 99 Sushi Oozing glamour and sophistication, 99 Sushi specialises in lavish Japanese bites such as sea urchin tempura, wild boar gyoza and Atlantic blue lobster maki. But the flashiest dish of all is the 99 Jewel rolls. Topped with gold leaf (obvs) and Iranian beluga caviar, eight dainty pieces will set you back dhs699. To save yourself the shock when the bill comes, we recommend sticking to the rather affordable (and utterly excellent) Omakase business lunch for dhs149. a Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi. Pitch Black Dining at Fresh Basil How do you stand out from the crowd in a city so obsessed with luxury restaurants? You switch off the lights and give them nothing to admire at all. The first dining-in-the-dark concept in Abu Dhabi is certainly an experience to remember, and while the menu can be adjusted to suit all tastes, you won’t actually find out what you’ve eaten until the very end. Inspired by a vintage circus tent, the first UAE branch of the Parisian pastry wonderland serves up creative sweet treats that almost looks too perfect and posh to eat. FLOWER WALLS GALORE AT SECRET GARDEN Most venues have realised that a wall of beautiful blooms always goes down a treat, but Secret Garden has taken it a step further and covered almost every inch of its café in content-worthy plant life. With trailing vines, statement light fixtures and an irresistible counter packed with pastries, cakes and cheesecakes, it’s a totally surreal escape from reality. Helipad dining at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi After living here for a while, some people find that the excitement of visiting decadent restaurants starts to wear off. However, dining on a 255-metre helipad will definitely impress even the most hard-to-please foodies. The capital’s most luxurious hotel hosts suitably fancy sky-high monthly events up on its infamous lofty platform, including sophisticated bubbly and canapé evenings and grand afternoon teas. Rotating vistas at Stratos Lots of restaurants in Abu Dhabi can boast about their incredible views. But only Stratos has one that subtly changes every second. Dining at the only rotating restaurant in the UAE capital is a brilliant and amusing experience that’s predictably about far more than just the food (although the herb-crusted cod, juicy steaks and creamy mash potato are the stuff of dreams). Absentmindedly leaving your bag on the side and having to scurry off to retrieve it from across the room 10 minutes later is all part of the fun, as is stumbling around trying to work out why the bathroom isn’t in the same place it was an hour ago. a Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi. 2pm to 2am. EAT // REVIEW

HUNTER & BARREL, YAS BAY

Steaking its claim as the city’s best meatery ards on the table, we love a good steakhouse. And we realise that in an age observing the proliferation of plant food, this may be an increasingly unpopular position. Rare you might say, but we stand by it. A good steak, is a meal well done. The capital already has a roaring trade in top-drawer beef-eateries, but it’s also a city that prides itself on a constantly evolving culinary scene. And at the sharp end of that knife is the new multi-billion Yas Bay development. We’ve returned to the Waterfront there to sink our teeth into the carnivorous feast supplied by Australian steakhouse, Hunter & Barrel. To borrow an appropriate idiom from the land down-under, we’re fully stoked about seeing if the brand is able to repeat the same hype fire that the Dubai location lit. Hunter & Barrel is an undeniably handsome venue. We’re seated inside with an inverted landscape mural in sepia to our rear, Tulum rave-style neon macrame lampshades above our heads and a brass art-deco bar just out of eyeshot. The planthemmed terrace is an extremely pleasant spot, too, but we can see the sea from our cosy indoor nook, so that’ll do for us. It’s the steak that opens the batting order here of course, but we’re also dining with somebody that doesn’t eat beef, a designated alt-meat degustationist, to test out the restaurant’s steak-free offerings. The meal begins with rustic bread, served with a quietly show-stopping chilli butter. Appetites suitably whetted, the

Hunter’s sharing platter appears on the table. On it are ‘open fire prawns’, smoky chicken wings, a three cheese dip and spicy calamari. It’s a library shuffle of awesome flavour, but the molten cheese dip hits the strongest six. There’s a certain brazen frivolity in having fondue as an appetiser, but like the plating method for this platter, we’re on board. As you’d expect from a steakhouse, there’s a strong list of prime cut options and accompaniments to choose from. We’ve selected the 1.3kg tomahawk (Dhs500, good for two), with chunky chips, salad and a chimichurri sauce. The steak is carved theatrically tableside and as the slices line up, it’s clearly marbled in all the right places. We’ve been equipped with serrated steak knives, but you could probably make a decent dent in the meat with a dessert spoon. It’s butter soft, even seared just shy of a medium, and is lightly glazed with faint nudges of a bush-prep marinade. This is good grain-fed steak, honestly priced, and we’d back it to punch holes in the established Abu Dhabi steakhouse hierarchy.

Other meaty table treats on our to-do list include coal-roasted chicken thigh skewers (Dhs75) and wild salmon (Dhs110) that arrive hanging pendulously from a suspended hook. We’ve even ordered a five-grain vegan-friendly kebab (Dhs65) for balance. The portions are very big size, and even with a spirited final assault, we are unable to clear the ranks. One criticism, and we’re not sure if it’s the meat-dizzies talking, but the vegan kebab does feel a little dry and beige in taste. The chicken skewer, however is a clear winner for ‘best non beef dish’ and a scandalously juicy affair, full of rendered, herby charm. VERDICT: Hunter & Barrel is a very strong addition to the Abu Dhabi steakhouse scene, and it finesses well beyond the beef section of its menu. The only problem it presents is now it’s even harder to choose somewhere to eat at Yas Bay. a Hunter and Barrel, Yas Bay Waterfront, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, daily 11am to 1am. 02 Stouff Beirut

A hidden gem in the World Trade Centre Stouff Beirut opened its doors in November, and on a mid-week lunchtime visit its botanical interiors are already filled with diners. The menu champions dishes from its open-fire kitchen: think prime cuts of meat cooked to order, freshly baked mezze and woodfire pizzas. There’s a supervised soft play area so parents can have a bit of grown up time, it’s licensed, and offers shisha. But one of the things we love most about Stouff is chef Sharbel Akiki’s passion for produce – jams, oils, cheeses and more are all made on-site and available to purchase for home use. a World Trade Centre - The Hub, Level 4, 8am to 12.30am. Created by Hashem Montasser and Hany Bassiouny and launched in 2017 at Dubai’s D3, the brand blends a gastro dining experience with a boutique retail space. They’ve got a great selection of books, scents and objects of curiosity that make gifts for those people that are ‘really hard to buy for’. The menu is a little bit hipster, and we mean that in only the kindest sense. You’re guaranteed great breakfasts and top quality coffee, imaginative food creations, with health and nutrition always a strong part of menu identity. a Yas Bay, Yas Island, from 8am to midnight. MEET THE CHEF

ABU HALAB Top chef at Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan by Rotana The first dish I ever made was chicken mloukhiya. I was 11 years old and my mother was my mentor. It’s my favourite dish. After the efforts of God and my father (who was also in this profession), I credit the UAE for my career as a chef. It was here that I started as a small chef and grew into what I am today: an executive sous chef in a five-star hotel. Kamoon restaurant is my baby. I am proud to be back after the renovation. I was the one who put the greatest effort into this restaurant 10 years ago, transforming it from a seafood to a Middle Eastern restaurant. I just love Kamoon. The main goal during menu curation? To showcase the Middle East’s diverse offerings, highlighting traditional, modern and healthy dishes. Ultimately, to show our customers a different way, made from the heart. We have a one-metre-long kebab on the menu. Kamoon is a family restaurant so I focused on this family dish. It’s certainly sufficient for a family of four, and we make it using two different flavours. I season my dishes with love. In my opinion, when you do anything from your heart, it will be a great thing, especially if you have love and passion for your profession. a Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan by Rotana. Sidekicks, The WB Abu Dhabi

A family brunch with a bucket-load of character(s)

The WB Abu Dhabi is one of the capital’s most exciting hotel openings of the past few years. Mainly due to its theme park adjacent setting, the attentive way it pays homage to the collected works of the Warner Bros. entertainment dynasty and its deck of new dining outlets. February saw the launch of two new Saturday brunches at The WB, an adultsonly affair set on show-stopping rooftop bar, The Overlook; and the other — very much a family afffair — at all day diner, Sidekicks. That’s where we find ourselves now, on the terrace, looking out on the sprawling amber metropolis of Warner Bros. World. We have with us one very DC-obsessed four-year-old, who has already narrowly avoided a collapsing star-level implosion at seeing the Batmobile parked outside. The staff immediately set the tone with warm welcomes and attentive service. The main dining cast list comes in the form of an international buffet. The usual suspects are on offer here – carvery with roast rib eye and Cantonese duck, neat little pizzas, signature pasta specials, a salad bar, an Asian cuisine station, and a whole island full of kid friendly eats and treats. And whilst the food all fits in with the standard of international dining we’ve become accustomed to, it’s not what makes this brunch worthy of a standing ovation. As the name of the venue might hint at, throughout the dining session, the

restaurant is visited by a toon-army of stars from the animated annals of the Warner Bros. back catalogue. We shake paws with Tom and Jerry, cut cake with Buggs and Daffy, even hold a drag race with Robin from (streaming now on Netflix) Teen Titans Go! The impact on our younger diners, particularly that last name drop, is only quantifiable by the number of times the words ‘best day of my life’ are uttered, admittedly also whilst dizzy on gummy worms and candyfloss. VERDICT: This is likely the closest we’ve come in the UAE to experiencing that Floridian category of kid-focused leisure industry mastery. There really is no family brunch here at the moment that can rival the experience laid out as standard at Sidekicks. B+ for food, A for the experience. a The WB Abu Dhabi, Yas Island, Sat 1pm to 4pm, Dhs185 with soft drinks, Dhs290 with house drinks. Tel: (02) 692 7742. @thewbabudhabi

Chef Marco Gattone

WHAT HAPPENED WHEN WHAT ’S ON AND FRIENDS TRIED THE NEW MENU AT FILINI GARDEN Last month, we hosted the first What’s On the Menu? of 2022 at Filini Garden, Radisson Blu Yas Island – and by every measure it was a roaring success. Twenty friends of the What’s On brand were amongst the first to try the new, refreshed, revamped and reinvigorated menu at this acclaimed Italian restaurant in the heart of Abu Dhabi’s leisure and entertainment district. As you can see from the photos, the food took centre stage, but the spotlight was almost stolen by the stunning surrounds of this truly special venue, and of course by the glitz and glamour of the guests.

THE NEW MENU IS NOW LIVE FOR ALL TO ENJOY Head to Filini Garden on Yas Island now to enjoy taste experiences transported straight from the breezy coast of the Adriatic and flavours inspired by the culinary traditions of Pescara, Chef Marco Gattone’s home city. Highlights included pallotte cacio e ove (a much-adored cheese-centric version of meatballs) with insalata di polpo e patate (a traditional Italian paysan salad) and an artisan’s collection of rustic home-style bruschettas. The carefully curated pasta contingent has been strengthened, too. You can now dive into steaming bowls of authentic, house-prepared chicche di ricotta served in a rich seafood sauce. There are new tagliatelle and ravioli indulgences, too, paired with expert-sourced ingredients, including porcini mushrooms and eggplant. There are fresh main courses to try too: highly-anticipated plates such as sea bream cooked in a foil papillote with sustainability-conscious seasonal vegetables, and Angus grade beef fillet luxuriously slathered in a three peppercorn sauce. Tell us about some of the characters joining you on stage. My regular characters are Sam, Albert and Baby. My bodyguard Roger will join me – he’s a paranoid American exmilitary type who thinks everyone is out to get us, so he interrogates the audience. We also have Urban Fox who accidentally got stuck in my luggage after sneaking in to eat my packed lunch. Surely you have a favourite? Ha! Albert my old man character is actually my favourite as he is 93 and says what he wants. He does magic and ventriloquism and of course it all goes wrong. Any surprise acts at the Theatre by QE2 performance? Yes, two people from the audience will become my ventriloquist dummies. It’s one of my favourite bits to do. Top three things you’re looking forward to doing when in Dubai? I’ve never done a desert safari so I’d really like to do one of those. I’ll probably visit the Burj Khalifa and I love water skiing, so I’ll hopefully do that somewhere on Jumeirah Beach. Read the full interview on whatson.ae

Music for late nights Flash Entertainment continues its Regional Artist Spotlight initiative to champion regional music talent

W

ith a blend of wistful R’n’B soul, and rugged hip-hop, Sobhhï’s sound is essential ‘music for late nights.’ He’s also a multifaceted artist, producing all of his own music, handling all his business himself and even directing his own videos and as the current number one streaming artist in the UAE, it seems that independence is working out just fine for him. How did you first get into music? I was seven years old when I wrote my first song. My parents signed me up for piano classes and we had a recital to prepare for. After they had taught us the basics, they had us pick one of three songs to play at the recital, but I was motivated to write my own song. I showed it to my teacher and he told me that I could play it at the recital. At such a young age, I got a chance to embrace my originality and I’m very grateful for that. The song was awful, but it was really nice to choose my own path. The feeling of performing original songs in front of people is what pushed me to pursue this. Who are the people that inspire you? The most influential moment for my music is Nostalgia Ultra by Frank Ocean, which is in my top three favourite albums and bottles a kind of feeling that I revisit often. Other

MUSIC

“AT A YOUNG AGE, I GOT THE CHANCE TO EMBRACE MY ORIGINALITY AND I’M VERY GRATEFUL FOR THAT.” artists that inspire me are A Tribe Called Quest, James Fauntleroy, Drake, Jeremih, Joaoa Gilberto, 90s Amr Diab, and many, many more. What’s been the biggest moment of your career so far? I would say my greatest accomplishment, alongside my team of course, would be seeing the unanticipated success of the listening parties we’ve had around the world for the upcoming EP,

Purple. We had 450 RSVPs in New York City, 980 in Toronto, over a thousand in Dubai and roughly 2,000 in Jeddah. All venues reached max capacity shortly after doors opened. Being in the room with so many people who are singing the lyrics, showing us love, and supporting us, validates our purpose. The final listening party in Jeddah was a reminder that there are people out there who really believe in us.

What is your creative process like? I don’t really follow a process when I’m writing or producing a song. One thing that has been consistent for me is making sure that I know exactly what I’m in the studio for. I don’t like to aimlessly walk in and write songs that have no topic or thesis. Where have you performed? Unfortunately, we had to cancel our first planned

live appearances due to the pandemic in 2020. We are just now getting back to planning shows. But if listening parties count, we enjoyed being at the top floor of Bisha with a view of CN Tower alongside hundreds of our listeners from Toronto. You’ve recently performed in Riyadh. How was that? We were invited to perform at Riyadh Season’s XP conference. It wasn’t really a show for our fans, it was more entertainment for the professionals attending the conference. We did enjoy doing it, but performing for our fans who know the songs and are excited to see us is an entirely different experience.

Which release is your favourite in recent years? I have a strong connection to the song Nights in Dubai. It’s a very personal record cataloging thoughts I had kept to myself for a very long time. Some of these thoughts are about people who wasted my time and misled me, and some are about close friends and business partners. After recording and mixing it, I felt an immense relief. I felt like I finally got over what I was going through these past few years in Dubai.

What is the meaning behind your release I’m in Dubai? I’m in Dubai is actually a record by our friend David Jassy. I just have a small part in the intro of the record with the opening verse, and I also mixed the record. While I can’t speak entirely for David, from our conversations I gathered the song is about how making it to Dubai is triumphant. David has been through a lot and has faced many challenges. Finally ending up in a luxurious world-class city making bangers is a peak moment. Are you working with any other artists right now? Yes, we are. I won’t mention any names, but we have a very special guest on the upcoming EP. Otherwise, I’ve been doing many features with other independent artists, many of whom are from Toronto. I guess it’s a byproduct of having a bit of buzz there and hosting our listening party.

Can you talk about upcoming releases in 2022? I’ll be substantially increasing the frequency of our releases. So far, we have a couple of singles dropping every week into mid-March and beyond. Many of the releases will be collaborations we’ve been holding onto for a while with artists from Canada, the US, and the UAE. As for releasing an album, timing is everything. If it makes sense, we’ll definitely drop it. What does your involvement in the Regional Artist Spotlight mean to you? I’m grateful for the opportunity and being one of the first artists on this platform. It means a lot to be recognised. In this region, we don’t have that many platforms for artists to gain exposure. So, I’m grateful and glad to know that Flash Entertainment is paving the way for more of these types of programmes. q @RegionalArtistSpotlight | @sobhhi

What is your latest solo release? My latest solo release is a single called Standards. The song is about raising the bar so much that now what used to feel exceptional and excellent just feels average and mediocre. I wrote this song in the middle of the pandemic. I remember it being the day I arrived in California, in July 2020. The first references of this track were recorded in the living room in quarantine. What’s On_51

RELEASES NEWNEW RELEASES

DIRECTOR: Matt Reeves CAST: Robert Pattinson, Andy Serkis, Zoe Kravitz

The Batman The caped crusader returns The Batman promises to be a caped crusader story that is fundamentally different from anything we’ve seen on the big screen before. It will stand alone, a full bat span away from all the other DC Universe releases. And from the trailers, it certainly feels like director Matt Reeves’ vision of the billionaire vigilante Bruce Wayne/Batman (Robert Pattinson) is a much darker, more conflicted, human take on the costumed detective. The Batman is a year two story, which means we join the hero in his formative years beneath the cowl, where he’s finding his feet, finding out who he can trust, and indeed who he truly is. 52_What’s On

R-Patz does Batman When British actor Robert Pattinson was cast as Batman, many were shocked. None more so than his own agents, who assumed the actor only wanted to play more unusual characters. In reality, Pattinson was deeply intrigued by the role, ready to stand up to the judgement of diehard Batman fans. Since Twilight ended in 2012, he pivoted to more off-beat indie roles in movies such as The Lighthouse (2019) and The Devil All the Time (2020). Until now. This month, he suits up for a different franchise, arguably bigger than his one before…

On preparing for the role “I had a lot of time, about a year, and I read so many Batman comics, It’s insane. I was looking at my iPad and it was full. I wanted to absorb as much of the legacy of the character as possible and learn as much as I could about his history.”

On working out “You have to believably look like you’re able to beat up 15 guys. I had two and a half months to get bigger and look stronger. It’s early Batman so thankfully he’s not a huge bruiser.”

On Batman’s internal and external battles “It’s a difficult thing to accept that, at the end of your character’s ark, you’re never going to be OK. But in some ways that is kind of what Batman’s journey is.”

On playing a hero “Batman’s not a hero. He’s a complicated character. I don’t think I could ever play a real hero — there’s always got to be something a little bit wrong. I think it’s because one of my eyes is smaller than the other one.”

Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre DIRECTOR: Guy Ritchie STARRING: Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza, Josh Hartnett Super spy Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) must track down and stop the sale of a deadly new weapons technology wielded by billionaire arms broker Greg Simmonds (Hugh Grant). Reluctantly teamed with some of the world’s best operatives (Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone), Fortune and his crew recruit Hollywood’s biggest movie star Danny Francesco (Josh Hartnett) to help them on their globe-trotting undercover mission to save the world.

The Lost City DIRECTORS: Aaron Nee and Adam Nee STARRING: Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, Daniel Radcliffe Brilliant but reclusive author Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock) has spent her career writing about exotic places in her popular romance-adventure novels featuring handsome cover model Alan (Channing Tatum), who has dedicated his life to embodying the hero character, “Dash”. While on tour promoting her new book with Alan, Loretta is kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe) who hopes that she can lead him to the ancient lost city’s treasure from her latest story. Wanting to prove that he can be a hero in real life and not just on

the pages of her books, Alan sets off to rescue her. Thrust into an epic jungle adventure, the unlikely pair will need to work together to survive the elements and find the ancient treasure before it’s lost forever. What’s On_53

CULTURE The Bad Guys DIRECTOR: Pierre Perifel CAST: Sam Rockwell, Awkwafina, Anthony Ramos After a lifetime of legendary heists, notorious criminals Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell), Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos), Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson) and Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina) are finally caught. To avoid a prison sentence, the animal outlaws must pull off their most challenging con yet – becoming model citizens. Under the tutelage of their mentor, Professor Marmalade (Richard Ayoade), the dubious gang sets out to fool the world that they’re turning good.

COMING TO NETFLIX

Against the Ice DIRECTOR: Peter Flinth CAST: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Joe Cole Based on the memoir by Ejnar Mikkelsen, Against the Ice stars Nikolaj CosterWaldau as Mikkelsen, an Arctic explorer who is determined to find the diaries of the Mylius-Erichsen expedition: diaries that would prove that the previously held understanding of the shape of the East Greenland coast was a myth, erroneous and presumably self-serving to the United States. While the plot is steeped in Denmark’s history, the trailer is quick to establish the stakes of the film, highlighting the harsh conditions and the seemingly futile expedition that Mikkelsen and his sole accomplice, Iver Iversen, played by Joe Cole, embark upon. 54_What’s On

The Adam Project DIRECTOR: Shawn Levy CAST: Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo After accidentally crash landing in 2022, time-travelling fighter pilot Adam Reed (Ryan Reynolds) teams up with his 12-year-old self (Walker Scobell) on a mission to save the future. Expect timeline paradoxes and plenty of witty one-liners from Reynolds.

Nice to be kneaded Conrad Spa introduces Amra Skincare products to its luxury treatments

T

here are a number of perks that come with living in a city that sometimes feels like a resort. Our favourite? The amazing selection of world-class spas, tucked away in our fine hotels. Often topping the list is Conrad Spa, located inside the mighty Etihad Towers. This month, the spa has introduced Amra skincare products to its treatments, which is a luxury British skincare brand formulated with the world’s most precious ingredients. A perfect unison if ever we heard of one. We head inside for a couple’s massage to check it out. Greeted enthusiastically by the charming receptionist, we’re instantly taken by the chic welcome area and the cosy and intimate ambiance. We’re here to try the Pearl AFR massage (Dhs745 for 60 minutes; Dhs915 for 90 minutes), created to detoxify, purify and protect, and the Amra for Men Meteorite massage (Dhs745 for 60 minutes; Dhs915 for 90 minutes).

Delivered in one of the private couple’s treatment rooms, our therapists lead us through a quick consultation process before selecting Amra oils that specifically suit our needs. Lying on soft and gently heated beds, each step of the experience is blissful. The body oil smells incredible, the therapists are attentive and the finishing body mist leaves our skin feeling soft and supple. A head massage featuring sun-protective hair oil completes the topto-toe pampering process perfectly and, by the end, we’re feeling so content it’s a challenge not to fall asleep.

Every inch of our body feels relaxed, we smell more delicious than ever, and the post-treatment ginger tea and dates, enjoyed from the warm embrace of our massage beds, really is the icing on the cake. After leaving the oil to sink in for the rest of the day, we can feel the revitalising benefits in our skin, muscles and hair throughout the rest of the week. Ideal for tired bodies and weary minds, an Amra massage at Conrad Spa is an experience to be savoured. a Conrad Etihad Towers Abu Dhabi, daily 11am to 9pm. Tel: (0) 2 811 5858. @conradetihadtowers

LASTMINUTE TRIP Discover worldrenowned Thai hospitality at this waterfront property Hailing from Thailand, Centara Hotels & Resorts is built upon traditional family values.

The location Tucked away on a prime stretch of the Deira Islands waterfront, this staycation spot will see you swapping bustling Dubai life for still blue waters paired with adventure, thanks to the family-friendly waterpark.

The look and feel Keeping little ones in mind, pops of colour alongside beach and ocean elements are dotted throughout the hotel. Expect under-the-sea murals and photos of Thai beaches paired with giant elephant sculptures, bamboo umbrellas, and tuktuks for that cultural touch of Thailand.

The rooms A variety of room styles are available with views of the beach and waterpark or the city. If you’re going with little ones, opt for the room which comes with bunk beds – they are sure to be a hit. For design, a minimalistic approach is taken with predominantly blue hues paired with touches of Arabia and a cool art piece that hangs over the bed.

Facilities and activities The facilities at this resort are plentiful, but the highlight is the waterpark which includes slides, cliff jumping points, play areas, a lazy river and more. For water sport activities head to the beach and take a dip in the Arabian Gulf. For non-water related activities, back in the hotel there’s plenty for the kids to enjoy in the Mirage Family Lounge. 66_What’s On

“ROUND UP THE FAMILY AND WATCH A MOVIE ON THE BEACH” Other must-try facilities include Spa Cenvaree, which offers an extensive selection of treatments and hot and cold plunge pools. Once the sun sets, round up the family and watch a movie on the beach.

The food and drinks The hotel is home to a number of restaurants but our favourite was Sands, aptly named as it’s located right on the beach. The restaurant serves up fresh seafood and grills and thanks to the friendly and attentive staff, the dining experience was truly memorable.

For dinner, we opted for Lebanese eatery Sheesh where we enjoyed dishes such as hummus, cheesy rakakat, shish tawook and the Lebanese mixed grill. If you fancy Thai food, there’s Suan Bua (where breakfast is also served), or for grills with Argentinian flavours, go to Uno Mas.
