EDITOR’S LETTER

I AM, WOULD YOU BELIEVE, A BOXER...

... I might not look it – in fact, I’m pretty sure I don’t – but boxing and me, well, we get on just fine. That doesn’t mean I’m knocking out folks left and right like tough guy Tyson Fury, but the odd class in a bag room, a light spar here and there, and I can just about hold my own. And that’s the beauty of boxing – you don’t need to be a super athlete to give it a go. Yours might be no more than gentle pad work in the gym, but if you enjoy it, and it helps to keep you fit, then you’re good to go. And as we’re finally – thankfully – starting to wave goodbye to what has felt like the longest summer (year?) in history, events are beginning to trickle in – like the annual Dubai Fitness Challenge, which kicks off at the end of the month. So now really is the time to get your trainers on and give a new workout a go. No, trust me, it is. Fitness studios across the country are doing everything in their power to keep their venues clean and sanitised for our safety. And don’t worry if you’re not feeling in shipshape condition, we’ve got you covered: from where to go, what to do and when to do it – and all of them are pretty good fun. Honest. Speaking of tough guys, the undefeated lightweight champ returns to our shores for UFC 254 on Yas Island this month, up against Gaethje from the US. Judging by the trash talk on Twitter it’ll be one epic fight, enough to inspire you to get the gloves on yourself... Enjoy the issue.

These Doorstep Diaries beautifully capture life in Dubai during lockdown 14_What’s On

e are living through an astonishing moment in history as the coronavirus pandemic impacts hugely on people across the globe. Families in Dubai have experienced stringent curfews, with some people finding their jobs on pause (or redundant), while others have had to adapt to working from home. On top of that many mums and dads have had to tackle home schooling and many of life’s unpredictable challenges. Through it all, hygiene and sanitation has been a number one priority for all. Along with other important behaviours like physical distancing, thoroughly washing hands often has been essential to controlling the pandemic. In partnership with Fine, we asked families, couples and housemates to step forward and share their lockdown experiences with us, and in return we offered socially-distant photographs taken at their front doors in an effort to record these unusual times.

Here are their stories…

Allie, Chad, Thea and Heath McLaughlin “Entertaining a toddler at home for days on end is a challenge – especially when you’re experiencing the emotional rollercoaster of pregnancy at the same time. We took for granted just how beautiful and amazing the teachers are at our child’s nursery – how much work they put in and how they play such a pivotal part in shaping our child’s life. I think my A-HA moment during lock down was realising just how important the social aspects of health are. How just simply hugging someone fills my cup, and not being able to be hugged by another person definitely took a toll on my mental status. Combine that with the daily sense of worry – will we be OK? Will our families in Canada be OK? – and it’s tough. We’re living a sort of Groundhog Day, unable to fill our cups. On the other hand, I felt inspired. The community came together. There were more phone calls than ever before. There were more communications with family and friends through Zoom sessions. It’s allowed us, for the first time ever, to slow down, appreciate the small things, and truly appreciate family.” What’sOn_15

DOORSTEP DIARIES

Osman Zin AlAbdin and son Adam “Our lockdown has been both a breeze and unbelievably hard. When curfew was first announced, I decided to pull out some things from storage that I hadn’t seen for years. I dusted off my Nintendo 64 and old cassette player to show Adam these retro gadgets. I used the old cassettes as background music to my yoga practice. I also used the time to be more vigilant with my practice. That part was wonderful. But then, I got slapped with the homeschooling. Google classrooms, iPad work, Zoom classes. Printing off hundreds of pages of a school syllabus. I found myself completely out of my depth trying to teach Adam French, English, Arabic, religion, grammar, math, moral studies, social studies, science – it was chaos. So yeah, if you put me back in lockdown I’m all for it. Just please, keep me away from home-schooling.”

FINE TISSUES All parents strive to take care of their children, even when they’re driving you crazy. From drying tears to cleaning up mess, tissues are your trusted friend, and nobody makes them like Fine. Soft on skin, renowned for hygiene, and tough on germs – exactly what you want from your hankies.

q finetissues.com

The Sankar family “We became grandparents during this lockdown – first-time grandparents. Our little granddaughter was born just before the curfews, and now she is six months old. We’ve been watching her grow remotely, mainly over Zoom calls, and seen how she is changing in front of our very eyes, from a tiny mite who barely could open her eyes, to a little laughing bundle who is sitting and crawling and actually smiling at us on camera. We are longing to see her and cuddle her, and are waiting for better times. So this lockdown has not all been bad – these are very precious moments that we’ll never forget.” 16_What’s On

Claire Harris, Dean, Vula and Noa Murphy “‘Look mum and dad, it’s like a beautiful dream’. That’s what our four-year old daughter said the first time we left the house after lockdown. We were on Al Qudra roundabout. Not exactly the Whitsundays, but to her it was everything. It was such a beautiful moment and something we’ll always cherish as a reminder to appreciate the simple things in life. Of course, much of life has changed. We spend a lot of time teaching our kids the importance of washing their hands, and trying to explain how masks help minimalise the spread of germs. That’s not an easy feat when you’re speaking to little ones. It’s been as much a learning experience for us as parents as it has for them. But we’ve learnt that being available, present and having real conversations has been key for guidance and support. As things open, watching the kids find excitement in what was previously normal has been amazing.”

The Manson family, Maricel Narciso and Flash “At first, all of us being together all the time was quite exciting. But that quickly turned to frustration and fear. We received news of friends ill in the UK after contracting the virus and that made us realise the severity of the situation. I could see it taking its toll on the kids and I knew we had to do something to bring life back into the house. Inspired by friends, we contacted UAE Little Angels shelter and suddenly we had nine dogs in the house: Husky Nina and her eight four-day old puppies. Nina had been through a lot of abuse, but after some TLC, she came to trust the whole family. The dogs became our family mission. We made charts for them, named them, and we couldn’t have done any of this without our incredible nanny Maricel. As those husky pups grew, the play areas had to be built bigger and higher. They’d love to escape and run around the house, hiding in all sorts of place, while we ran around after them. It was crazy but incredibly fun and the blood, sweat, tears and endless cleaning up after them was so worth it. Now all of them, including Nina, have gone to loving homes. Well, all except one – our beautiful Flash.” 18_What’s On

DOORSTEP DIARIES

The Magbiray family “In March, I gave birth to my baby 10 weeks premature. He had to stay in NICU for 79 days. So, I spent most of lockdown going back and forth to visit him and bring breastmilk and baby diapers until he was discharged. I had a month spent at home taking care of him on my own without the help of any of our parents or relatives, discovering the wonders of motherhood, and navigating the roller-coaster of being a first-time mum. While it was exceptionally challenging, my relationship with my husband has also grown stronger. He has been a great support system to me and our baby boy.”

Nadia Chanandin and Zeus “Zeus has adjusted to this year much better than me. He enjoys the lazy life after all. I started the lockdown being productive. I thought that the only way to override my anxiety was by not resting. But soon enough, I’d hit exhaustion. I went from being superhuman to attending all my team calls in my PJs. I had to motivate my team (about 30 people across different countries) when I couldn’t even motivate myself. I had to tap into some serious inner strength to push on. Through it all, Zeus has been there; my trusty companion comforting me on tough days and putting a smile on my face, and I cannot imagine how much harder this all would have been without him to love and be loved by.” What’sOn_19

DOORSTEP DIARIES

Claris Reyes “From a beautiful white wedding gown to kitchen apron, face guard, masks and gloves. I had to cancel my wedding, which was meant to be in May and, instead I took to baking. If lockdown has provided one thing, it’s made me discover a new skill and passion for baking. I’ve probably baked more than a thousand breads, buns and baked goods for my friends. I’ve even created a YouTube channel where I share these easy recipes. This pandemic has sent me on a roller coaster of emotions, from denial and sadness, to excitement and hope. In the end, it taught me how to adapt by finding the good out of the bad…”

Nadine Manning, son Tiago and Juliette Albuquerque “On July 21, the storage facility that had all my belongings in burnt down. I had everything in there from my four-bedroom home in Mirdif, which I’d lived in for almost two decades. I had moved into my mother’s one-bedroom apartment with my six-year-old son Tiago, our nanny Juliette, the dog, two tortoises and two geckos to ride out the Covid storm waiting for the events industry, which I work in, to pick up again. And then the fire happened. Now we’re left with a few suitcases, I now have no job, no house, no belongings, and no school registered for my son. But I have faith. I have family and friends, and I’m determined not to stress about what I cannot change. I believe that events will return and we can rebuild our lives, because after 19 years in Dubai, this is my home and I’m not ready to leave just yet.” 20_What’s 20 What’s On

Hristina Pavlovska and husband Ahmed Kassem “I’m a teacher here and teaching from home this year has been both challenging and fun. It gave me time to reflect on all that was happening and made me work and think more creatively. On the other hand, my husband was working outside the house every day and I found that a little scary. We put in place a lot of precautionary measures to keep everything sanitised. Of course, he would wear a mask when outside, but in our home I would wipe the floor every day, and use sanitiser on everything. My husband has been so supportive. He’s helped me record some beautiful educational videos for my students. This time together has brought a lot of laughter, and brought us even closer than before. Even during a scary time there is hidden beauty in it.”

NEW WELLNESS SESSIONS 09

Editor Laura braves an ice bath (and still keeps smiling)

Ice bath and hike retreat

In recent years, cold body therapy has gained serious popularity, because it is linked to numerous health benefits. For example, scientists have found evidence that exposure to cold speeds up metabolism. Another benefit of exposing your body to cold is that it reduces inflammation, swelling and sore muscles. Keen to learn more? Meet Benoit who runs guided breathing and ice baths sessions in Dubai. He’s planning a wellness retreat in Fujairah from October 8 to 9 that includes a guided ice bath, a six-hour hike to a secret beach, HIIT training, stretching, breathing exercise and a one-night hotel stay plus food for Dhs900 per person. q @cooloutbreathin

“Benoit teaches you how to get comfortable in uncomfortable environments through the power of breathing. Initially, I joined to see how long I could last in an ice bath. Now I go for the breathing exercises. It has helped me focus more and offers unimaginable mental clarity. ” – Nasir Khamlichi, Ice bath fanatic.

Coffee naps

If you’re feeling sleepy and want to wake yourself up – and have 20 minutes or so to spare – there’s something new to try in Dubai. It’s more effective than drinking a cup of coffee or taking a quick nap. It’s drinking a cup of coffee and then taking a quick nap. It might sound crazy: conventional wisdom is that caffeine interferes with sleep. But the folks at Inspire yoga say that if you caffeinate immediately before napping, you can exploit a quirk in the way both sleep and caffeine affect your brain to maximise alertness. Fancy giving it a go? Inspire offers coffee naps from 12.30pm to 3pm daily. Call them up at least 30 minutes in advance to prepare the space with pillows and a blanket for you. q inspiremeyoga.net 28_What’s On

Between epic meals, yoga and gong meditation with Zarine Dadachanji, you can stargaze at night or wander the desert in search of tranquility and inner peace. F45

What is it? The F45 Challenge When does it start? October 26 to December 9 How much does it cost? Dhs1,600 for newbies. Prices vary for members. You may have overheard your colleagues bragging about it, or you’ve seen the unbelievable before and after pictures on Instagram, or maybe one of your fitness-obsessed friends is always trying to drag you to a class – but what is F45? The group training phenomenon, which started in Australia just 8 years ago, is taking over the world, with hundreds of franchises across the globe (with three in Dubai alone). The stripped-back studios offer functional training sessions which last for 45 minutes – think high intensity circuit training that includes lifting, squatting, jumping, biking and a whole lot of burpees. Every class is different and you can opt for some high energy cardio, or a muscle-quivering strength training session. Either way, you’re going to sweat. A lot. And then, there’s the F45 Challenge. For eight weeks, you follow a meal plan, track your progress, attend your chosen studio at least three times a week and watch yourself transform into an F45 athlete. q f45training.ae

CLASH OF THE T I TA N S Meet the UFC warriors headed to Fight Island in Abu Dhabi this month

34_What’s On

C L A S H O F T H E T I TA N S

U

FC fever has hit the capital once again as Fight Island returns with five events in September and October, including two pay-per-view cards and three Fight Nights. The events on Yas Island kicked off with an explosive UFC 253 on September 26, where Israel Adesanya defended his middleweight title against Paulo Costa. This is now followed by Fight Nights on October 4, October 11 and October 18, wrapping up with the penultimate fight – Khabib vs Justin Gaethje in UFC 254 on October 24 (based on UAE timings). Earlier this summer, the mixed martial arts promotion successfully held four events at Fight Island to allow international fighters the chance to compete at the height of the global Covid-19 pandemic. The undisputed success of the inaugural series has catapulted Abu Dhabi into the limelight as a world-class destination for global sporting events, entertainment and sports tourism in the current and post-Covid world. Similar health and safety protocols are in place this time around including the Safe Zone ‘bubble’ concept surrounding the event, which has since become a new benchmark in global sport safety.

“FIGHT ISLAND WAS A MASSIVE SUCCESS IN EVERY WAY THAT YOU CAN MEASURE SUCCESS” - UFC PRESIDENT DANA WHITE “Fight Island was a massive success in every way that you can measure success,” said UFC president Dana White. “While the rest of the world shut down, we worked with our partners in Abu Dhabi to put on the best live sporting experience, and we did it safely and responsibly. The infrastructure they have in place, from the arena, to the hotels, to the restaurants, is second to none, and we’re excited to be going back.” Arena

SAFETY FIRST

Here’s a look at the safety measures in place on UFC Fight Island

QUARANTINE Event personnel must quarantine for 14 days at Yas Island hotels before the event even begins

SAFE ZONE A 6km2 safe zone surrounds Yas Island where only UFC athletes and staff are allowed to enter

Let’s meet the fighters entering the cage this month...

MIST TUNNELS These tunnels kill 99 per cent of surface bacteria on anyone passing through and into Flash Forum

DEEP CLEAN The Octagon is sanitised between all fights and subjected to deep cleaning each evening

How does it feel to have Fight Island return so quickly? The inaugural UFC Fight Island was an overwhelming success and its return less than three months later highlights Abu Dhabi as a world-class destination for global sporting events and sports tourism. Are there any notable new changes to safety precautions this time around? For the Return to UFC Fight Island, the safe zone incorporates the arena, hotels, training facilities, as well as entertainment and dining establishments. How do you think Fight Island will influence other sporting events around the world? The safe zone ‘bubble’ concept is now the new benchmark in global sport safety, and Abu Dhabi is leading the way in sports revival. The fact that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 season is taking place in Abu Dhabi right now, and the return of F1 in December is a sign of the global confidence in Abu Dhabi to host major international events with the highest health and safety standards.

Holly Holm is the only fighter in combat sports history to hold world titles in multiple divisions in boxing, as well as the UFC title in the bantamweight division. Up against the decorated athlete will be 32-year-old rising star Irene Aldana. Irene is coming fresh off a massive KO victory over Ketlen Vieira and is a promising fighter. A victory over the 38-year old Holm will certainly be a boost for Irene. However, it will be a daunting task to work inside the Octagon with one of the most naturally equipped strikers in the division.

The fight between Brazilian Marlon Maraes and American Cory Sandhagen will be a pivotal bantamweight clash, with both men hoping to move one step closer to challenging current champ Petr Yan for the title. Moraes hasn’t fought since his rebound win by split decision against Jose Aldo at the end of last year. Cory Sandhagen, meanwhile, suffered his first loss inside the Octagon when he was submitted by Aljamain Sterling in 88 seconds at UFC 250. Before that, he had notable wins over Raphael Assuncao and John Lineker, but this will be the first time he is headlining a UFC show and going five rounds.

Brian Ortega and ‘The Korean Zombie’ are two of the most prominent featherweights right now. They are also bitter foes. In the aftermath of UFC 248 in March, Ortega slapped Korean rapper Jay Park, a good friend of Jung’s. The incident has intensified a rivalry so expect fireworks when the cage closes. Ortega hasn’t competed since his maiden defeat against Max Holloway in 2018. Although he is one of the most promising 145 pounders, this lengthy inactivity could cost him. In contrast, Jung is on a winning streak. He competed twice in 2019, winning both by first-round knockouts. Ortega will be a tough-test, but The Korean Zombie has all the chances of dominating the fight.

The big one, UFC 254 is topped by Nurmagomedov’s return to the Octagon where the undefeated lightweight champion takes on Justin Gaethje. The Eagle has not fought since UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi last year, when he defeated Dustin Poirier by third-round submission, taking Nurmagomedov’s record to a laudable 28-0. But it’s been a tough year for the Russian. His father (and trainer) Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov died in July. Social media posts from the champ suggest he’s ready for action, though. “Justin is a very nice guy,” he tweeted. “But when the Octagon close… I will take him to the deepest ocean and drown him.” Gaethje seems unfazed. The Arizona native is ready to create “a zone of death,” he said in a recent interview. “That’s what I’m best at. Creating carnage.” Let’s see who lands on top.

K A C E!

We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to decadent afternoon teas and fancy desserts, but sometimes all it takes is a slice of cake and a good cuppa to make us feel all warm and glowy. Here are eight of the most delicious arrangements of sponge, jam and icing and their perfect partner brews 40_What’s On

L E T T H E M E AT C A K E !

Tuscan olive oil cake (DHS130 FOR A WHOLE CAKE)

Where: London Dairy Café This dessert has garnered a range of diehard fans all over the world and for good reason. The revolutionary olive oil cake is light and incredibly moist with a sweet, soft base and a surprise sour twist. We love the flavours of zesty Valencia orange and Greek extra virgin olive oil. It really is a melt in your mouth delight. a London Dairy Café, La Mer North, Sat to Thur 9am to 1am and Thur to Fri 9am to 2am. Tel: (04) 349 4584, londondairycafe.com

JOINT

Victoria sponge (DHS17)

Aseeda Terrine cake

Words: Sarah Henson

(DHS45)

Where: Mirzam An homage to the chocolate terrine cake, which was originally developed by pastry chefs in Tokyo, Mirzam’s version is made with a generous amount of caramelised white Aseeda chocolate and is infused with warming cardamom. It’s creamy and gooey texture makes it perfect to eat slightly warm with a scoop of saffron ice cream on the side. Wash it down with a relaxing cup of Shan Lin Xi Winter Sprout tea (Dhs25). a Mirzam Chocolate Factory, Al Quoz 3, 4th Street, daily 9am to 9pm. Tel: (04) 335 9988, mirzam.com

TIP

Carrot cake (DHS28)

If you’re gluten free, try the super-moist Tunisian Cake made with almond and orange (Dhs24).

Where: Marks & Spencer It’s said that the Victoria sponge was named after Queen Victoria, who ate a slice each afternoon with a cup of tea. We like her style and, in our mind, you can’t beat a mid-shopping pitstop at your local M&S cafe for a slice of this British classic, alongside a cup of English breakfast tea from their fairtrade selection. In fact, they do a great deal where you get a cake and a cuppa for just Dhs19. Now, if they’d only put Colin the Caterpillar on the menu… a Springs Souk, Sun to Wed 8am to 10pm and Thur to Sat 8am to 12am. Tel: (04) 425 1815. marksandspencer.com/ae

Where: Roseleaf Café We’re long-time fans of Roseleaf Café and absolutely adore its homemade carrot cake. It strikes just the right balance of fluffy cream cheese frosting to light sponge, is crammed full of walnuts and grated carrots, and has a perfect level of spice. We take ours with a lovely cup of Avantcha Earl Grey (Dhs18) but there’s a large selection of other interesting tea blends to choose from. a Roseleaf Café, Dubai Garden Centre, daily 9am to 6pm. Tel:(050) 5711944.roseleafcafe.com What’sOn_41

L E T T H E M E AT C A K E !

Four-layer chocolate cake (DHS24) Where: Circle Café Four layers of chocolate? Now you’re talking. JOINT The portions here are generous but once you’ve had a bite of this gooey creation, all thoughts of sharing go out the window. We especially love the icing, which steers away from the thick buttercream that sometimes overwhelms these cakes. The filling here is much gooier and moreish. Try it with a latte and expect some quirky coffee art. If you’re not a chocolate fiend, go for the light-as-a-feather vanilla fudge butter cream cake. a Circle Café, Jumeirah Islands Pavilion, daily 8am to 10pm. Tel: (04) 572 6107. circle-cafe.com

Red velvet cake (DHS28)

TIP Visit after 3pm and you’ll get a slice of cake and a tea or coffee for Dhs25.

Where: Magnolia Bakery According to the menu, Magnolia’s speciality cake is made red with cocoa, vanilla, and ‘a little southern mystery’. It’s definitely a crowd pleaser and provides that instant sugar high. We love the generous amounts of classic American vanilla frosting which add some much-needed moisture to the dense sponge. This is definitely one that the kids will enjoy too. a Dubai Festival City Mall, daily 9am to midnight. Tel: (04) 288 1539. magnoliabakery.com

Lemon and lavender tea cake (DHS24)

Millefeuille (DHS60) Where: Al Mandhar Lounge, Jumeirah Al Naseem We can confirm the Parisian-style pastries are as good as the view at this beautiful café that overlooks Burj Al Arab. Whilst not strictly a cake, our favourite bake on the menu is the classic raspberry Millefeuille pastry. It’s impossible not to get messy as you plough through the rich layers of flaky pastry, smooth custard and sharp raspberry. This is a delicately stacked masterpiece to be enjoyed with the signature mocha coffee mixed with Valhrona chocolate (Dhs45). a Jumeirah Al Naseem, daily 8pm to 10pm. jumeirah.com 42_What’s On

Where: Lime Tree Café Think Lime Tree, think carrot cake. But don’t be afraid to branch out and try one of the other tempting treats in the display cabinet. We’re big fans of this vegan and gluten-free tea cake, which is topped with a small amount of piped, creamy frosting sprinkled with lavender flowers. The delicate floral notes in this mini loaf work perfectly alongside the strong punch of citrus. This is one to be enjoyed mid-morning, with a cup of tea. a Springs Souk, daily 10am to 10pm. DHOW AND ANCHOR Has the OG of the British gastropub scene still got it?

ubai was plunged into lockdown just a week after Jumeirah Beach Hotel’s flagship British pub had unveiled its impressive new extension and makeover. So, it’s time to head back to the Dhow and Anchor (D&A) and check out what’s new. In a smart move, they’ve added an upstairs, which brings in an additional bar and plenty more dining space that’s ideal for private parties or match days. The terrace, which boasts panoramic views of the Burj Al Arab, has also been

renovated and has reopened this month. Once we’re seated in a cosy corner, we order some drinks from the Anchor Hour menu, and go straight in for the roast of the day (Dhs125), and the Wagyu burger (Dhs105), with a side of onion rings (Dhs10). The roast dinner does not disappoint. Crispy potatoes, sweet roasted carrots and parsnips, gooey cauliflower cheese and a generous helping of beef. It’s only the Yorkshire pudding that doesn’t quite make the grade. It’s tough and chewy, even when soaked in lashings of the delicious gravy. The Wagyu burger is served in an American-style bun with red onion marmalade and tomato relish. Top marks here – it’s nicely put together and easy to eat and it doesn’t fall apart in our hands. But it’s not the mains that are the star

of the show on the day, it’s the desserts. The sticky toffee pudding (Dhs55) with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream is to die for and we’re left feeling all warm and gooey, just like the pudding itself. Then there’s the vanilla cheesecake (Dhs55). A firm biscuit base, cream cheese which is slightly charred on top, and sweet brandy-soaked prunes on the side. It’s like Christmas has come early. KUSHI BY REIF

A big name moves into Depachika Food Hall. Is it same same but different? hen you think of mall food, premium doesn’t generally come to mind – but that’s where Depachika is different. The Japanese dining destination, found in Palm Jumeirah’s Nakheel Mall, is home to an ever-growing number of homegrown concepts, each offering top quality dining options. One such option, and the new kid on the block, is former Zuma chef Reif Othman’s latest venture, Kushi by Reif. After the roaring success of his first solo project, Reif Japanese Kushiyaki in Dar Wasl Mall, the acclaimed chef is back with a more paired back (but equally as exciting) concept. Kushi by Reif is described as ‘same same but different’ – a Japanese soul food grab and go stall. It has a counter-style set up with stools set against the service bar and a small number of tables. The menu is concise, only including the best of Japanese basics, from ramen to kushi. The star of the show is Reif ’s signature Wagyu sando (Dhs158). It’s more than we’d pay for a sandwich but can’t deny how good it is. Humble white toasted bread encases the marinated Wagyu exploding with flavour and juices – prepare to get messy as you dive into this one. We’re advised to try the fries too, which are delicious. Despite being smothered with a creamy truffle mayonnaise (Dhs48) the chips remain crunchy, crispy and textured. We could’ve reordered the beef gyoza (Dhs48) again if we had any space left. Light and fluffy dumplings came out piping hot with a crispy underside and sweet soy sauce on the side.

W

Across from the Kushi counter is a patisserie display with some of Reif ’s most notable creations. The tiramisu boba (Dhs38) is an interesting choice (it’s wrapped with plastic so that when you peel away the casing, the dish flows

out like a broken dam). We can only manage a slice of goma cheesecake (Dhs36, but it’s worth rocking the unbuttoned jeans look for). Using black sesame, the dish avoids becoming over-sweet and cleverly combines crunchy and creamy textures to create a wonderfully simple dessert. Stepping up the mall food game is the hand-picked selection of mini restaurants in Depachika. Kushi by Reif is a brilliant addition and one well-worth making a trip to, or if you’re not a mall-lover check them out on Deliveroo. a Depachika Food Hall, Nakheel Mall, Palm Jumeirah, daily 10am to 10pm. 07 New Terrace Launch Earlier this year we unveiled our new French Rivierainspired terrace. It features Belle Époque inspired shutters, glass lanterns, and painted walls inspired by Jean Cocteau’s work. I hope that the space transports guests to the stunning Côte d’Azur.

01 Launch Day Seeing the restaurant come alive for the opening in October 2010 was something quite amazing. I didn’t know what to expect but I knew we were special. Ten years later, and more than a million people served, my instinct was spot on.

08 Making the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list

02 Creation of Snails I would have never thought it would become our most popular dish globally. This dish was invented by our former Dubai Head Chef, Rory Duncan. I have eaten many snail dishes, however I feel LPM’s is quite special. The secret is in the way we prepare the butter.

03 Tomatini Creation Our signature cocktail is described as ‘the essence of LPM in a glass’ and was created by award-winning bartender Jimmy Barrat, who works for our sister company Zuma. Jimmy was asked to create a signature serve to celebrate LPM. As you always find tomato and lemon on an LPM table, the original recipe contained fresh muddled tomato, a drop of lemon juice, a dash of sugar syrup, Ketel One and aged white balsamic vinegar. It’s very refreshing. 48_What’s On

04 Winning What’s On Award ‘Favourite French Restaurant’ It was a very proud moment for the whole team when we were awarded ‘Favourite French Restaurant’ at the 2016 What’s On Awards. As this is a people’s choice awards, we were humbled and grateful to the people of Dubai for their love and support.

05 Interviewing Chef Izu for Head Chef Role I have been very proud to watch Izu’s career flourish over the years and for him to become one of the most recognisable chefs in Dubai. I remember the day I interviewed him. I knew that he was the right person for the role as head chef and to assist me in introducing LPM to the UAE. I am glad to see that LPM’s French Mediterranean food philosophy and my support

and guidance played a pivotal role in Izu’s career and success.

It was a privilege to be ranked in the prestigious World’s 50 Best Restaurants. It gave the brand global exposure, while showcasing Dubai as the great dining destination that it is.

Who would have guessed that LPM would offer delivery? We have received many requests over the years, however it wasn’t the right time to launch such a service. We wanted to do it right, and to be able to bring a true LPM experience into our guests’ homes. The pandemic left little choice but to put all our heart into the

We have been lucky enough to have many famous faces dine at the restaurant over the years, from Sheikh Hamdan and Sheikh Mohammed to Lionel Ritchie and the late Gary Rhodes. All have become friends of LPM.

10 Rebranding to LPM LPM Dubai has always been a trendsetter, and that is why we chose Dubai as the perfect place to debut the new name and logo. Many people already refer fondly to our restaurants as LPM, so it seemed high time to make a change. a Gate Village 8, DIFC, Sun to Thur noon to 11pm, Fri and Sat 12.30pm to 11pm. Beano’s Family Brunch at The Scene Doughnuts and dress-ups equal unadulterated fun…

B

eano’s Family Brunch has bounded into The Scene, delivering wholesome Friday fun for all ages. This is not just a brunch that caters to children – it’s a loud, lively affair that puts little ones front and centre. For fans of Simon Rimmer’s classic British pub grub, you’ll be pleased to know that many of The Scene’s most popular dishes have made it onto the Beano’s Family Brunch menu. It’s loaded with options that appeal to the youngest palates (read: pastas, mini burgers and all things fried), with enough variety for adult tastes. To start, crowd-pleasing platters of popcorn chicken, crumbed brie croquettes and haloumi fingers hit the table, along with more adult-skewed dishes of beetroot hummus and spicy fish tacos. Everyone then gets to select their own main course. For the children, the ‘Little Menaces’ menu includes a generous serve of rigatoni with meatballs, baby burgers, and battered cod with fries, among others. For older folk, there’s The Scene staples such as sausages and mash, fish ’n’ chips with mushy peas, and a tasty cheeseburger on a brioche bun. This is comfort food, pure

and simple. Calorie-counters need not apply. One of the challenges of dealing with an a la carte menu for such a crowd is getting food on the table in a timely fashion. Our position near the kitchen means we’re among the first to get our mains (although our battered cod could have done with a few more minutes in the fryer, to be honest). Those at the window tables have a lengthier wait on their hands, but considering the generous spread of starters and the freeflowing drinks, no one seems to mind. Desserts are a checklist of British classics, including Nan’s apple crumble and a knockout sticky toffee pudding, with bowls of ice cream for the kids. The afternoon’s highlight is the live performance by ‘Elsa’, who sings Frozen hits as she leads the little ones through the restaurant. The children in our group have had a blast, and us adults have had a brilliant afternoon, too. a Pier 7, Dubai Marina. Fri 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Head Chef at Alici Dubai Are you surprised by the success of Alici? At first it was challenging; Bluewaters is a very new area. Attracting clientele and delivering the Alici experience was our focus. But I always knew we would succeed at making Alici the dining destination it is today. How do you feel your team has dealt with this challenging year? Alici and Orange Hospitality made its first objective to look after its staff. We felt protected and since reopening I can see that the overall operation, morale and synergy of our team is stronger than ever before. What do you love most about this city? There is endless opportunity. The vibrant community excites me. What does the future hold for Alici? I would love to see Alici evolve into the international scene, replicating what we do in Dubai in other international markets. q alici.com

BRUNCH MONTH O F

T H E

Is the famous brunch as effervescent in the new normal?

B

ack in the days when surgical masks were primarily emergency room accessories, we’d scarcely raise an eyebrow at the thought of jostling elbows in a seafood station queue. Like much else in life, 2020 has changed all that. Buffet brunch nowadays poses some big logistical challenges for restaurants. First, there’s the question of numbers, all sat in relative proximity over the same time period. Then there’s the issue of self-service, traditionally a central element of the buffet format. Now the mere idea of swapping tongs or someone saying ‘scuse fingers’ before diving in for a maki roll is enough to send us scrambling for a soak under the sanitiser pump. So in addition to exceptional food, value and service, our brunching wish list now also includes outstanding safety. And it’s something, we’re pleased to report, that The Westin’s Bubbalicious brunch has nailed. Almost immediately after being led to our socially-distant table, we’re provided with 52_What’sOn

a platter of sharing starters. Fresh salads, prawns, seared tuna and grilled vegetables. It’s a neat assortment of palate-pleasing amuse-bouche nibbles but swiftly seen off. During the rest of the afternoon, we’re free to roam the various culinary quartiers at leisure. For stations where food is to be cooked fresh, you place your order with a chef and they bring it directly to your (numbered) table. For more immediately fulfillable requests you can ask your contact on the otherside of the emirate-required glass partition to do the plating live. This system could descend into chaos if those running the show weren’t on their A-game. Thankfully the calm, professional staff, unflappable in the face of forgotten table numbers, had the process down to a fine art. We also enjoy the dim sum selection and crispy roast duck bao. Prepared fresh, the delicate interplay of mellow umami and more aromatic Eastern flavours are all there.

The climax for those with a carnivorous leaning will undoubtedly be the carvery and grill section. A counter lined with roasted joints, beef, lamb, salmon and chicken, all with complimenting condiments. King prawns and a varied trove of fish, whole and filleted are also present, ready to be tossed on the barbie at the request of guests. It’s a slightly toned-down affair, compared to the pre-Covid famed Bubbalicious fiesta atmosphere, with (in accordance to governmental decree) no live music. But the ambiance remains appropriately bubbly. In our opinion Bubbalicious rises to the challenges set by this new reality we’re all living in, and what’s more, it lets us escape some others, if only for a few hours. a The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa, Abu Dhabi Golf Club, Sas Al Nakhl, Fri 1pm to 4pm, Dhs195 with soft drinks, Dhs350 with house drinks, Dhs125 kids six to 12. Arabian Knights

Two cultures meet in this visual tale at Louvre Abu Dhabi ART

D

escribed by London’s Daily Telegraph as one of the 50 must-see exhibitions of 2020, Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Furusiyya: The Art of Chivalry between East and West shines a spotlight on a stunning collection of 130 rare artefacts and artworks from dual militaristic worlds. The inspiring exhibits date back to between the 11th and 16th centuries and include medieval armour, the instruments of war and horsemanship, and manuscripts depicting chivalric scenes. Objects illuminating the stories of Islamic furusiyya (the Arabic term for horseman) and European knights are placed side by side, to observe the points where cultures connect.

56_What’s On

Furusiyya: The Art of Chivalry between East and West examines the origins of this warrior knight breed, chasing roots across Syria, Iraq, France, Spain and beyond. We see how themes of courage, faith, loyalty and honour are central to the banners of both the Islamic East and Christian West, and that the ripples of these enduring forces can still be felt today, in pursuits such as horse riding, jousting, polo, falconry, chess, medieval fairy tales and great works of fiction, such as Game of Thrones. The collection strides beyond stories of religion and duty, war, plunder, nation-building, comradery and courtly love. It offers answers to big historical questions: ‘What were these cultures of

furusiyya and chivalry?’ ‘How did they begin?’ ‘What happened when they faced each other in climactic historical periods?’ ‘How have chivalric values helped shape the modern cultural landscapes of the East and West?’ Those inquiring minds that hold a fascination for history cannot afford to miss this, a regionally unprecedented exhibition, which draws from iconic cultural partners such as Musée de Cluny, Musée du Louvre, The Metropolitan Museum of Arts, and Furusiyya Art Foundation. Forces for change Greta Thunberg stars in this special exhibition at XVA Gallery

ART Celina Teague

T

his month, XVA Gallery plays host to a unique exhibition with a startling title. The House Is On Fire features bright and colourful text-based paintings by Celina Teague, a British artist who is fascinated by climate activist Greta Thunberg and activism in general. The show, which is curated by Anna Seaman, displays two series of work. The first uses words from the famous speech that Greta made at the UN Climate Action Summit in 2018 and features them in bold capital letters. The other portrays conventionally unappealing animals – pigeons, bats and unusual birds – painted on top of poetry written by the artist. The poetry gives a voice to the animal and so, they too become activists in their own way. The artworks and the exhibition’s title capture a kind of urgency that is needed to spur action. “The fight against global warming and Teague’s passionate love of the animal kingdom are incredibly important and cannot

Animals in Distress THE SUCCESS STORIES

Animals in Distress is a new What’s On column profiling the amazing animal shelters, veterinary clinics, carers and the passionate team at Royal Canin UAE that work together to save the lives of stray animals in the UAE. Every month, Royal Canin UAE has pledged to cover the costs of vet bills for select animals in need. These are their stories… MEET FIVOS Fivos had a tough start in life. At just four months old, this tiny kitten was all alone, with a terrible eye infection. He was taken to Animalia Veterinary Clinic in Al Bateen, Abu Dhabi, where an emergency consultation with Dr Grizic confirmed that he was blind in his right eye, likely due to some sort of trauma, followed by infection and swelling. With a lot of fluid pressure inside the eye, Fivos was in a lot of pain. The team first needed to control the infection and reduce the swelling before there would be any chance of

MEET GABRIEL Gabriel had a serious wound to his left foreleg and was found hiding under a car by the volunteers at Stray Dogs Centre. He was rushed to the Vet24 clinic in RAK, where he was very weak and full of ticks. Ticks typically attach to the host animal from vegetation outside. They bury their head within the skin and feed on blood

saving his sight. The kitten was admitted to the hospital for stabilisation, and Royal Canin UAE covered the full costs of the treatment. As is common with stray cats and kittens during this time of year, Fivos was severely dehydrated and emergency stabilisation was necessary before any further options

Sadly, not only did Gabriel’s routine blood work confirm anaemia, but further investigation revealed he had contracted both ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis, so an eight-week treatment plan, with appropriate antibiotics, began immediately.

could be considered. He was provided with intravenous fluids and medicine to help treat the infection and manage the pain. He was also tested for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus and was given the all-clear. During his time in the hospital, the loving nurses and vets were able to spend time with Fivos – getting him accustomed to human contact. Over three days, the swelling reduced, allowing Dr Grizic to better assess the infected eye. Sadly, due to prolonged pressure in the eye, the damage was too extensive – there was no chance that the kitten’s vision would return. With the eye causing a

With his treatment underway, attention was directed to Gabriel’s leg. The trauma was so severe that the blood supply was affected. The tissue was beyond repair, and the team feared that the infection had penetrated the bone. Amputation was the only way to stop the spread of the infection. Once he was stabilised, the decision was made to take him to surgery where he underwent a

great deal of pain to Fivos and having no visual function, the decision was made to remove it to allow Fivos to have a painfree future. Dr Grizic performed a surgery at Animalia Clinic called enucleation – which is the removal of the eye and the damaged tissues. The surgery was a success and Fivos has since made a healthy and speedy recovery, responding well to the treatment, care and kindness of the clinical team at Animalia Clinic. In more good news, Fivos was adopted last month, and is settling well into his new family. A happy ending for a very special cat. qqanimalia.ae

forelimb amputation. Thankfully, his surgery was a success. With the damaged tissue removed, Gabriel was more comfortable. In less than a month, and with thanks to Dr Chenjarai and the hard-

working staff at the hospital, Gabriel was able to go to his new foster home arranged by Stray Dogs Centre. He is still completing his medication and continues to learn how to run and play on three legs, but he’s flourishing with all the love and attention. His bill is being paid for in full by the team at Royal Canin UAE and he is on the road to a full recovery. qq vets24.ae

L A S TMINUTE TRIP Discover old-school opulence at WaldorfAstoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah With a history that dates back to the 1890s in New York, Waldorf-Astoria hotels are renowned for their timeless elegance. That proud heritage is writ large across the Waldorf-Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah, with a graceful white façade, oversized chandeliers and sweeping staircases that look like they could have been constructed any time in the past 100 years. It’s a comfortable kind of luxury here, with intuitive service and décor that seems neither dated nor bang on trend.

The room We’ve been invited to spend the night in a Family King Suite with Sea View. After a seamless check-in, a glass elevator whisks us up through the light-filled atrium to our room on the third floor. It’s a huge space, with separate lounge room and bedroom, and a bathroom that’s bigger than most studio apartments. An expansive terrace offers views of the Arabian Gulf and Burj Al Arab on one side, and the resort’s lagoon pool and the Palm on the other.

The restaurants For dinner, we head to Social by Heinz Beck, a handsome space with whiteclothed tables. For now, this romantic restaurant is offering a choice of two, three or four courses. We begin with a stellar fritto misto with basil aioli, and a creamy orb of burrata. Mains include a dish of perfectly al dente spaghetti with clams, and a tricked-up take on veal Milanese, which exemplifies the three-Michelinstarred chef ’s penchant for modernising Italian food. Desserts include one of the finest tiramisus we’ve sampled in Dubai. For breakfast the following morning, we visit Mezzerie. The Waldorf-Astoria Palm Jumeirah’s buffet service has been modified to accommodate the latest health 74_What’s On

“IT’S A COMFORTABLE KIND OF LUXURY, WITH INTUITIVE SERVICE AND DÉCOR THAT SEEMS NEITHER DATED NOR BANG ON TREND.” and safety guidelines, with chefs manning stations for cooked-to-order eggs, hot dishes, pastries and more.

The pool The chilled family pool is fully operational, and is large enough that we don’t feel crowded at any stage. It’s surrounded by sun loungers and curtained cabanas, and there’s a nice patch of lawn between the pool and the private beach. It’s worth noting that the tiles around the pool are seriously slippery, so take care when moving around.

Safety There are clear precautionary measures in place throughout the hotel. Our temperatures are checked on arrival, and again before entering restaurants, the pool and the spa. Each hotel room is sealed with a safety sticker, along with surfaces within the rooms. And although the minibar is missing, there’s clear signage to call up for anything you desire. a Waldorf-Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah. Room rates start at Dhs520++ for members.
