F
rancesco Laporta is no stranger to going scary low, nor winning. The trick now for the surprise halfway leader at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA is figuring out how to merge both things on the biggest stage. The unheralded Italian rattled off nine birdies, including five on the trot to close out a sensational, bogey-free 63 on Friday. It allowed him to wriggle clear atop a bunched leaderboard of otherwise household names at Abu Dhabi Golf Club. Laporta will start the third round at -10, halfway towards a maiden European Tour title but only a stroke clear of decorated European Tour winners Matthew
Fitzpatrick and Rafa Cabrera Bello. With Sergio Garcia, Haotong Li and Renato Paratore at - 8, and Patrick Cantlay, former world No.1 Lee Westwood and 2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen among those three adrift, the 29-year-old won’t be getting ahead of himself. Before he even has the chance to, the world No. 121 deserved to bask in the glory of the round of his life, a score few saw coming after he’d missed the cut in the Alfred Dunhill Championship and last week’s South African Open in his two previous starts since returning to the European Tour as Challenge Tour No.1. “It was a great day,” Laporta said after inching to within a stroke of The National course record of 62, held jointly by Henrik
Stenson (2006) and defending champion Shane Lowry (2019). “My putting was solid, my driver, my irons. I gave myself a lot of opportunity for birdies, and when I had the opportunities, I took it. Every time I was putting for birdie, I made it. “I didn’t start the season good. I missed the cut in South Africa two times, and this is the third event and I’m leading, so I just want to enjoy the weekend.” As the reigning Challenge Tour No.1, it’s not as though Laporta hasn’t cracked the code to closing out tournaments. He won twice on the second tier tour last year, at the Hainan Open and the Challenge Tour Grand Final in Mallorca as recently as November to seal his
promotion back to the big time. But previous personal experience highlights how difficult it is to keep your card, much less win on the European Tour. Laporta’s best finish in the top flight was a T-22 at the Trophée Hassan II in 2016, his only full season on the European Tour where he eventually finished 189th in the Race to Dubai to tumble down to the Challenge Tour once more. Perhaps coincidently, Laporta led after the second round of the Trophée Hassan II four years ago like he does here. He’ll also be hoping for a better finish than the last time he shot a 63, a then course record at the 2013 Zimbabwe Open, a Sunshine Tour event where he eventually finished tied second. afa Cabrera Bello gleefully accepted a couple of gifts from the golfing gods while Matthew Fitzpatrick was pleased to take lady luck out of the equation with his “disciplined” play. Sprinkle in five birdies apiece, mix it all together and the Spaniard and Englishman find themselves joint owners of second place at the halfway stage of the 15th Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, a shot adrift of surprise Italian leader Francesco Laporta. Fitzpatrick’s second round 67 was a shot better than Cabrera Bello’s 68 and he’s gone bogey free thus far. There have been three dropped shots through 36 holes for Cabrera Bello but both will begin moving day at Abu Dhabi Golf Club at -9. In other words, with exactly the same chance to capture their first European Tour wins since 2018 (Fitzpatrick) and 2017 (Cabrera Bello) respectively.
“Yeah, for the first week of the year, to have no bogeys, couldn’t ask for a better start, really,” said Fitzpatrick who isn’t playing like a man fresh from seven weeks off. “Just played really disciplined golf and it’s worked out well so far.” Like 2012 Dubai Desert Classic champion Cabrera Bello, Fitzpatrick has pedigree in the desert, his win in the 2016 DP World Tour Championship the middle of his five European Tour wins thus far. Do you get up for the Rolex Series events more than other tournaments, Matthew? “No, to be honest. For me every event is the same. You’re here to win. Don’t matter what you’re playing for, really. Obviously it’s always a nice bonus, playing for more money and more points, Ryder Cup. But you’ve got to go in with the same attitude.” Cabrera Bello, searching for his first win since the 2017 Scottish Open, was pleased to back up his opening 67 and even more so with a second round card sporting five birdies after his dropped shot on the par-3 7th. You take momentum any way it comes in golf and for the 35-year-old world No.42 it came in the form of binned birdie putts from downtown on the 11th and 13th. “Those felt like those putts that go in once every year, and they both went in,” said Cabrera Bello who amassed five top10s last year without being able to add to his three European Tour wins. “I mean, golf takes away from you more often than it gives you back, but when the golfing gods want to give you a little extra, you’re just happy to take it. “I like how the round went from less to more, as in improving throughout the day and holing some really, really long putts that for sure gave me a lot of momentum. Also playing some very good golf particularly on the last holes.” – Kent Gray

The reigning Open champion took his frustration out on the trap with a couple more lusty blows. He immediately looked embarrassed by the crater he left and soon after crestfallen after his title defence ended prematurely as his par attempt from the apron cruelly lipped out. Former Masters champion Danny Willett (+2), Ian Poulter (+3) and 2014 Falcon trophy winner Pablo Larrazabal (+4) also have unwanted weekends off. ■

ound two at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA was another sublime day of golf and has left the tournament perfectly poised as we head into moving day. The Championship Village was a picture of glitz and glamour as women from across the UAE turned up to take part in the annual ‘best dressed competition’. Judged by a selection of high-class fashionistas, the victor won two business class flights to any Etihad destination, one nights stay for two at the Shangri La, Qarayat plus spa vouchers and the wonderland brunch. The first leg of the inaugural E-Tour competition also proved to be a phenomenal success. Eight competitors representing America, Germany, Spain, Brazil and Romania took part in an exhilarating battle with the eventual champion claiming the $10,000 first prize. As per the first two days, there are a multitude of activities taking place today in the Village. The HSBC Future Falcons, an initiative that aims to inspire and engage young children to be the next generation of golfing talent in the UAE, will get a once-in-a-lifetime chance to take part in a Pro-Am round with several

Poor timing T
he way Brooks Koepka started off his second round on Friday like he left off the first one on Thursday, it looked like the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship might be a foregone conclusion. But golf doesn’t work like that, not even for the world No.1. After his care and bogey free 66 to open 2020, Koepka squandered a fast, second-round start on The National to sign for an uncharacteristically messy 75. The three-over loop, including two double bogeys, saw the 29-year-old American plummet from third to a share of 35th at -3 for the championship. He’s not out of it seven strokes behind Italian pacesetter Francesco Laporta but dangerously close to being so if he can’t get his new TaylorMade SiM driver to start cooperating quickly. It all looked so easy after Koepka birdied the 1st from some deep, right-hand rough before very nearly holing his second shot on the 2nd. After eventually two putting for a birdie to get to -8, the Ryder Cupper was just one off the lead at the time. But there is evidently some ring rust after all following Koepka’s three months on the sidelines recuperating from surgery to his pivotal left knee. Not that he seems overly fazed by his wayward big stick. “Just my timing was a bit off. Didn’t hit that many good shots the last 15 holes. Good on the first two but other than that, it was a bit of a disaster. Going to go to the range and just figure it out,” he said.
Apparently it will be an easy fix too, the help of coach Claude Harmon III who is in town this week not necessarily required. “I know what I’m doing. It’s just timing. It will take 15 balls. Yeah, it’s a lot different on the golf course trying to do it because there are consequences,” Koepka said. “You just try to find your go-to shot and try to hit that go-to shot [when struggling with the driver]. I hit a few of them, and then tried go back to hitting a normal shot and found a couple of fairway
bunkers and couldn’t even find the fairways, so it was difficult.” Did your surgically repaired knee play any role in the mostly left, but also sometimes right, misses? “No, no. I don’t know, everybody likes to make an excuse. It’s just me.” So we can expect the real Koepka to show up again on moving day, then? “Yeah, obviously be off a little earlier, so probably no wind, shoot a low one and then we’ll see. We’ll see where Sunday ends up.” - Kent Gray

osh Hill might have missed the cut in his bittersweet European Tour debut but there will be no weekend off for the teen. Another uncooperative day with his driver stymied any chance the 15-year-old Dubai amateur had of recovering from an opening 74, a Friday score two worse sending him home +6 for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in a share on 117th place in the 132-strong field. Hill missed the cut by seven strokes but that only served to send him back to Dubai doubly determined to show what he is made of at next week’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic. Asked what he had learned from his second round 76, Hill retorted: “I learned that Mattias [Austrian playing partner Mattias Schwab who is -4] is a good putter. He holed everything. So I’m going to go away and hit a lot of drives and hit a lot of putts and hopefully that will improve for next week. “You can’t really miss fairways around here. As soon as you miss a fairway you’re out of position and you’re struggling to make pars and that’s what happened today and yesterday. But that’s been the story for the past 18 months so I need to start working really hard on my driving.” Hill will still take much from the week, the highlight of which was a partial practice round with Brooks Koepka where the teen beat the world No.1. “It’s been really fun, it’s been a great experience playing with Charl [former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel] and Mattias. Disappointing the way I’ve played but I’ve learnt a lot from it and hopefully I can take that into next week. “I feel I handled the pressure or the expectation quite well, feeling nervous on the first tee and just getting out there and having fun. So I’m pretty happy in some places but overall I’m a bit disappointed. “I’m really looking forward to next week because I feel like I can compete with these guys when I hit fairways. I keep saying…hit fairways and hole putts.” – Kent Gray
Love-Li to make the weekend
W
ith his broken English, transcribes from Haotong Li interviews promise two things: the answers will be short and sweet and, more often than not, leave you wanting more from one of the most interesting characters on the European Tour. It‘s not hard to decipher what the Chinese star is trying to say but you’d love a bit more meat on the bone to do his best rounds justice, a deeper personal insight to give added colour to all the red on his scorecard. A bit of statistical research helps to fill in the gaps where quotes from other players articulate the day’s proceedings but be careful, there can be holes in first-hand facts from Li too. Like how the 24-year-old said on Friday he thought he’d missed the cut at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship the past three years. Turns out it’s not as bad as Li thought – he’s only missed the weekend the previous two years. The good news is there will be no repeat in 2020 with Li right in the mix for a third European Tour title at the 15th Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship after rounds of 67-69. The ever-smiling Chinese pro has a particular liking for desert golf, if not Abu Dhabi Golf Club until this week. He won the Dubai Desert Classic in 2018 and was runner-up to Dustin Johnson at the inaugural Saudi International last Feb. Li’s year nosedived after he finished fourth at the China Open (the event he won for his maiden European Tour title at in 2016) with just one other top 15 following since May last year. But plenty of grind on the range with his coach seems to have the world No. 69 back on track. “Yes, I did a lot up-and-down, and short game has been improved a lot. I think that’s how I get this result,” Li said after his second round 69 and just two bogeys in his opening 36 holes left him at -8, just two shots off Francesco Laporta’s halfway lead. “I’ve been work very, very hard, and especially with my coach and whole team, and change management company, as well. It’s a lot of change this year, but glad to see everything works.” The goal now is to kick on, hopefully this week but definitely this year as he looks to return to the top-50 of the world rankings to get himself back into all the majors and World Golf Championship events. “Yes, for sure. This is my biggest goal for sure and just want to play solid like this, and I think I will be back soon.” – Kent Gray

Day two was awash with style and elegance as women from across the UAE flocked to the 2020 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA to take part in the annual ‘Best Dressed’ and ‘Best Handbag’ competition. A group of elected fashionistas had the enviable task of choosing the winner from such a varied selection and in the end opted for Dominique Bedford who works for the House of Devereaux. Dominique wore a simply sensational champagne pink blazer and shoes, complemented by a stylish set of denim jeans and chic sunglasses. ith the action underway here at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, the world’s best players are once again demonstrating their incredible talent in front of the UAE’s fantastic golf fans. The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA always brings together a strong field of talented golfers from all over the world, and this year is no different. This is reflected in a field that features nine major winners including Brooks Koepka, Shane Lowry and Padraig Harrington, a returning Sergio Garcia, twotime champion Tommy Fleetwood, Ryder Cup stars Ian Poulter and Bryson DeChambeau, the 2019 European Tour Rookie of the Season Robert Macintyre. We’re also delighted that in the field are Haotong Li and Yuxin Lin two graduates of the CGA-HSBC Junior Golf program. One of our global grassroots initiatives, the program has been instrumental in building a sustainable long-term structure and framework for the future of Chinese golf. It is hugely gratifying to see these two graduates compete on the world stage here in Abu Dhabi Here in the Middle East the coming together for discussions and sharing of knowledge is a central part of our culture. City. Pictured in front of the Knowledge Centre at Masdar City, our golfers all discussed how we could help to cement the future of golf in a sustainable and innovative way. Joining them at Masdar City were members of the HSBC Future Falcons Junior Golf programme. The programme, established to develop golf at the grassroots level in the UAE by providing fun and exciting ways for kids to take part in the sport, has helped to introduce around 80,000 children to this fantastic sport. HSBC Future Falcons is an investment in the future of the UAE and the health and well-being of the next generation. As a result of this investment, the programme has had a huge impact in getting young people involved in golf. Through the provision of hundreds of hours of coaching, children between 4
and 16 years of age have been given the opportunity to learn the basic golfing fundamentals of swing, chip and putt through activities such as HSBC Hours, school visits, clinics and activities at some of the top sporting events taking place in the region. Through the HSBC Future Falcons, the first ever schools golf league has been established in Abu Dhabi through the ‘Skills 4 Schools’ initiative. This is now an active programme in some 39 schools in Abu Dhabi, with 18,385 participants including 7,565 Emirati students. It was brilliant to see the next generation of this sport we all love to watch and play standing sideby-side with some of their sporting heroes. They even joined in on the discussions about the future of the game. Topics of conversation between the players and HSBC Future Falcons ranged from the importance of strength and conditioning in today’s game, to eradicating slow play and the popularity to the Ryder Cup. The HSBC Future Falcon members were particularly vocal around the changes they would like to see to the sport. Tell us about your round today, Ahmad. I found the course quite tough and the conditions were particularly difficult. The fairways are very narrow so if you don’t hit the fairways it can be very tricky. On the first nine, I felt like I started really well, I felt strong and had a feeling like it was going to be a good day for me. However, towards the back nine, I felt my energy drop and that is where I felt I could’ve done much better. How did you find the experience? It was a very enjoyable experience for me. Unfortunately, I was sick before the tournament with a fever and only could practice for nine holes which made it difficult. Saying that, I still had a great time out on the course and will learn a lot from this going forwards I’m sure. What is it like playing in front of a home crowd? It is very special. Seeing my family, friends and team members coming out yesterday to support me in my home city is something I will always remember and look back on with great fondness. Playing in front of a big crowd is very exciting and something that will motivate me to practice and improve my game. What are your ambitions and goals next in golf? Get stronger. One of my main goals is to get stronger and hit longer off the tee. When you have to hit five and four irons into most of the greens, it takes a lot of energy out of you and is an area of my game that I will definitely look to improve.

The HSBC Future Falcons, an initiative that aims to inspire and engage children to become the next generation of golfing talent in the UAE, went head-to-head yesterday, as they challenged each other to see who has the best putt and chip in their annual skills competition. Before the action unfolded, we managed to catch up with 11-year-old defending champion and future golfing superstar, Zurich Kankopornvasin… How did you get into golf? It all started with ice skating. I skated for around two years and went to a lot of competitions but then I started getting bored of it and decided to stop. My dad gave me two options between tennis or golf – I picked golf because it seemed more fun. I stopped ice skating and started golf when I was nine. What do you like most about golf? I like the technical aspect because it takes skill to do a simple thing like hitting a ball into a hole. Who is your favourite player? Kiradech Aphibarnrat because he’s just so good in general – he’s also Thai like me and a very nice person. I’ve met him in real life and would say he is one of my role models, even though I’m a girl. I’d say I always try and play like Kiradech, particularly his bunker shots. I try and copy those as well as I can. Who are you looking forward to watching the most? Maybe Shane Lowry, because he won the tournament last year. He’s a very exciting player. I’m really looking forward to watching Brooks Koepka as well but you never know with golf, it is very unpredictable, and anything can happen. Who do you think will the tournament? I really don’t know, I’m not sure. If I had to pick one, I think it will be Brooks Koepka because he is world No.1.

SAFETY Golf can be a dangerous game – even with the best players in the world the ball doesn’t always go where it is intended! Be aware of your location on the course and pay attention to any instructions given to you by the course marshals; their role is to ensure the smooth running of the tournament and to ensure the players are not distracted by any untoward noise or movement. It’s best to stay quiet and still while the players are about to hit the ball – but feel free to clap or cheer at any other time when you’re impressed by the standard of play!
STAY BEHIND THE ROPES There are rope lines along both sides of most holes. These ropes are put there to ensure the hole is clearly defined for the players and the TV audience, but importantly they also mark where it is considered safe for spectators to stand and watch the action. It is, therefore, in your own interest to stay behind the ropes and only cross fairways at the designated crossing points – there’s usually at least one on every hole. If a ball lands on the spectator side of the ropes, please do not touch or move the ball. A course marshal will then move the ropes and instruct you where it will be safe to stand.
PHONES Please ensure your mobile phone is switched to ‘silent’ mode and the ‘flash’ function is switched off. If you have to make or take a call, please talk quietly and avoid disturbing the players and/or other spectators.
AUTOGRAPHS The players will not sign autographs on the course during play, but are quite happy to do so once they have finished their rounds or at designated autograph sessions in the Championship Village.
CAMERAS While cameras may only be used on the golf course by officially accredited photographers you may use your mobile phone camera so long as the flash is not activated.
RESPECT THE PLAYERS You may have a favourite player competing for this year’s title, but we ask that you do not applaud or cheer a mistake made by one of their opponents.

T
he Championship Village continues to wow spectators in incredible fashion at the 2020 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA. As we enter the business end of the tournament with an array of activities designed to encourage well-being and family fun, day three will undoubtedly continue to be even more impressive! As with yesterday, the early risers can access the course at 6:45am where you will be greeted by a fleet of sumptuous food trucks, opening at 7am, to help you kick start the day with a variety of food choices, ranging from authentic Middle Eastern to spicy Mexican staples at Tacos Arabes. After breakfast, the field, which has been halved due to the cut, will see all competitors tee off from the first tee. Starting their day at 8:10am, players will set off every 9 minutes on the penultimate day of golf – be sure to catch them on their way to what promises to be an incredible finale. The HSBC Future Falcons, an initiative that aims to inspire and engage young children to be the next generation of golfing talent in the UAE, will get a once-in-a-lifetime chance in a Pro-Am round with players including the likes of European Tour winner Oliver Wilson and threetime Challenge Tour winner Richard McEvoy. This follows on from an incredible week so far for the HSBC Future Falcons as they have already teed-off with the likes of world No.1 Brooks Koepka and competed in challenges with European Tour winner, Eddie Pepperell. After the Pro Am, the HSBC Future Falcons will join up with their parents and relatives to compete in the inaugural family golf competition. The kids will aim to acquire bragging rights against their moms and dads to see who the kings and queens of the golf course really are as they take on the Garden Course in the Village. The Trick Shot Boys are back for another year as they continue to show off their mind-blowing skills, starting at 11am. If want to see the boys tee off from a unicycle, then the Championship Village is the place to be. The guys will continue to dazzle the audience every two hours until 5pm. To round off a remarkable day of activity in the Championship Village, the Mini Village Vibes stage comes to life at 5pm. Adjacent to the first tee, different bands throughout the week will perform a number of party them to ensure the penultimate day closes of in fine fashion and tee us up for an all-enthralling final day. ■ abudhabichampionship.com
