Welcome Golf has always rewarded those who look beyond the familiar. The courses that stay with you longest are rarely the ones you expected to play – they are the ones that surprised you, that asked something different of your game, and that sat inside a place worth travelling to for reasons that had nothing to do with a scorecard. This guide covers five destinations that earn their place on that list. Spain needs no introduction, but it still has things to show you. Croatia and Georgia are making a case that the rest of the golfing world is only beginning to hear. Scotland’s Aberdeenshire coast now has 36 holes that belong in any conversation about the world’s best links golf. And Shura Links in Saudi Arabia is something else entirely – a course that didn’t exist two years ago and already has no real equivalent. Five destinations. Every round worth the flight. Enjoy the travel guide.

400 courses. 320 days of sunshine. Spain has been the default European golf destination for decades, and it hasn’t coasted on reputation alone – the Costa del Sol, nicknamed the Costa del Golf, keeps building, keeps improving, and keeps drawing the best players and the most discerning travellers on the continent. From the Ryder Cup legacy of Valderrama to the Atlantic links of Galicia, you can play a different style of golf every day of a two-week trip and never feel like you’ve exhausted it. Best time to visit: March to June and September to November. Nearest airport: Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP), gateway to the Costa del Sol. Madrid Barajas (MAD) and Barcelona El Prat (BCN) for other regions. Flight time from Dubai: Approx. 7 hours direct. 6

GOLF IN ALMERIA (ANDALUCIA)

GOLF COURSES

GOLF IN GRAN CANARIA (CANARY ISLANDS)

1. Costa del Sol – Andalusia • 70+ courses, 18 holes, Par 72 • This is where Spain’s golfing reputation was made and where it continues to be earned. Valderrama – host of the 1997 Ryder Cup and still the benchmark by which every Andalusian course is measured – anchors a stretch of coastline that also takes in world-class venues across Marbella, Sotogrande and Estepona. The sheer concentration of championship layouts within driving distance of each other is unmatched anywhere in Europe, all set against Mediterranean views and the particular pleasure of Andalusian light in the late afternoon. 2. Northern Spain & Galicia – Atlantic Links • Multiple 18-hole layouts across the region • Serious golfers who think they know Spain often haven’t played the north. The Atlantic coast offers a contrasting linksstyle experience – lush, green, dramatic, and increasingly on the radar of players looking for something beyond the familiarity of Andalusia. It’s a different country in every sense, and a compelling reason to book a second trip. GOLF TRAVEL GUIDE 2026

WHERE TO STAY

1. Golf Resort Hotels – Costa del Sol • Rating: ★★★★/ ★★★★ ★ • Why is stands out: The Costa del Sol’s accommodation has kept pace with its courses. From Marbella to Sotogrande, golf resort hotels range from four-star functional to genuinely luxurious, many with on-site courses, pools, spas and direct access to multiple championship layouts – all within minutes of each other. SO/ Sotogrande, Fairmont La Hacienda Costa del Sol, the Marbella Club Hotel and The Westin La Quinta Golf Resort & Spa in Benahavís represent the upper tier of the region’s offer. MARBELLA CLUB HOTEL

Over 400 courses, 320 days of sunshine, and the legacy of Valderrama. Spain is not a golf destination. It is the golf destination. 10

RESTAURANTE DON QUIJOTE

ALHAMBRA PALACE

CÓRDOBA’S MEZQUITA

Must-try restaurants & cuisine • Traditional tapas bars and seafood restaurants in Marbella’s old town remain the most honest introduction to the region – jamón ibérico, fresh fish, paella. This is not a destination where you need a restaurant recommendation as much as a willingness to walk down a side street and sit down. 12

Cultural highlights

• The Alhambra palace in

Granada is one of the most visited monuments in the world, and it earns every visitor. • Seville’s historic centre, Córdoba’s Mezquita and the whitewashed villages of the Pueblos Blancos complete an Andalusian cultural itinerary that would justify the flight on its own, even without the golf.

JAMÓN IBÉRICO

Activities & experiences • Day trip to Granada’s Alhambra palace. • Explore the whitewashed villages of the Pueblos Blancos. • Marina and beach life at Puerto Banús. • Ferry to Tangier from Tarifa for a short North Africa excursion. climate means warm summers and pleasant spring and autumn conditions – April to October is the window, and any part of it is worth using. Best time to visit: April to October. Zagreb doesn’t have the profile of the big European golf destinations and makes no attempt to compete with them on volume. What it offers instead is a well-designed championship course in a genuinely charming city, green fees at EUR 60-85 that make the Costa del Sol look aspirational, and a cultural scene that most visitors leave wishing they’d given more time to. GOLF COURSES

1. Riverside Golf Zagreb – Competition Playground • 18 holes, Par 72 • Designed by golf architect Howard Swan and built to PGA standards, the Competition Playground is the course that put Zagreb on the international map. Eleven lakes add strategic weight to virtually every decision on the back nine, and the course has the credentials to match – it regularly hosts national and international tournaments, including the Croatian Open and the European Team Shield Championship. 16

GOLF TRAVEL GUIDE 2026

The setting along the Sava River, with Medvednica Mountain rising behind the city, gives it a backdrop that few urban courses anywhere in Europe can claim. 2. Riverside Golf Zagreb – City Playground • 9 holes, Par 35 • The shorter sibling to the championship layout, the City Playground runs through the same natural setting along the Sava River with bunkers, lateral water hazards and a more relaxed pace. It works equally well as a warm-up, a wind-down, or a round for players who want the atmosphere without the full commitment.

GOLF COURSES

1. Tbilisi Hills Golf • 18 holes, Par 72 • Tbilisi Hills is Georgia’s flagship course and has earned recognition well beyond its region – it sits in the Top 100 courses in Continental Europe and has been nominated for Europe’s Best Golf Course. The design combines championship-standard architecture with Caucasian scenery that simply doesn’t exist at the courses golfers habitually return to. The mountain backdrop is not a selling point, it is the hole-by-hole context for every shot you play. 2. Nine holes, boutique scale, panoramic views over Tbilisi – it works as a warm-up or a standalone round for players who want something more contemplative than competitive. 3. Ambassadori Golf • 9 holes, Par 36 • Located in Georgia’s Kakheti wine region, Ambassadori was the country’s first international-standard golf course. It sits within the Ambassadori Kachreti Golf Resort, combining premium facilities and refined playing conditions with the particular warmth of Kakhetian hospitality. Both courses occupy the same vast Aberdeenshire coastal estate. You play them from the same tee sheet. There is no other 36-hole facility in Scotland that comes close. Best time to visit: April to October (open year-round). Nearest airport: Aberdeen International Airport (ABZ), 20 minutes from the Menie Estate. It became a DP World Tour host in 2025 and boasts the largest practice facilities in Scotland. The routing through the Great Dunes of Scotland along the North Sea shoreline produces a links experience that is both classically framed and visually unlike anywhere else in the country. 2. Saudi Arabia / The Red Sea Shura Links, Shura Island

Saudi Arabia’s first island golf course is routed through native mangroves and Red Sea dunes, with an 18th hole that finishes below a Foster + Partners clubhouse and holes 14 through 18 playing along open sea. It was built on regenerative tourism principles – only 20 percent of the course is maintained turf, which is not a constraint but a design

philosophy, and one that produces a landscape unlike any other golf course operating today. Two hours from Dubai. Nothing else like it on earth. Best time to visit: October to April. Nearest airport: Red Sea International Airport (RSI), 25 minutes from Shura Island. Flight time from Dubai: Approx. 2 hours direct.

FEATURED COURSE

Shura Links • 18 holes, Par 72 • Designed by Brian Curley, Shura Links is Saudi Arabia’s first island golf course – a routing that moves through native mangroves and Red Sea dunes before opening out along the shoreline for the closing five holes. The signature 18th finishes directly below the Foster + Partners clubhouse, one of the most architecturally distinctive golf buildings in the world. With just 20 percent maintained turf, the course blurs the line between golf course and coastal landscape in a way that is genuinely new.
