IN MEMORIAM

Jocelyn Henderson 1921-2021 In writing an appreciation of a long-lived member of the community who has passed away, it is almost a convention to note that: “We will not see their like again.” In the case of Jocelyn Henderson, a prominent member of Abu Dhabi’s expatriate British community for 45 years, that is not just a fair judgement.

It is also a matter of great regret.

Jocelyn, who first came to live in Abu Dhabi in 1976 with her late husband, Edward Henderson, died on November 13, 2021, three months after reaching the venerable age of 100. Among those sending her birthday greetings was the ‘Mother of the Nation’, Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, a token of the respect in which she was held.

Born in Britain on August 21, 1921 to a Dutch father and an English mother, she packed a lot into life before she married in 1961. Training as a secretary, during the Second World War she worked first in a hospital, then a film company and a theatre company, before going to work with Sarah Churchill, daughter of Britain’s wartime Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. After the War, she moved to Germany to work with the British forces there, before returning to Britain in 1957, where she met her husband.

Life was then, perhaps, lived at a slower pace, and a four-year courtship followed before Jocelyn and Edward married, shortly before

he took up a post at the British ConsulateGeneral in Jerusalem. A posting in Bahrain followed, introducing Jocelyn to the Gulf, and then one in Qatar, where Edward was, in 1971, the last British Political Agent and the first British Ambassador. By 1976, he had retired from the Foreign Office and the Hendersons moved to Abu Dhabi, at the invitation of the late Sheikh Zayed. He had become a close friend of Edward’s during earlier postings, as an oil company representative and then as a diplomat, in the late 1940s and 1950s.

While Edward quietly continued to work with Sheikh Zayed, Jocelyn began to carve out her own place in Abu Dhabi’s growing expatriate community, playing an active role in the local Anglican Church, St. Andrew’s, and helping to create and run the Daly Community Library, which was for many years a central feature of expatriate community life.

In those early days in Abu Dhabi, so different from today, Jocelyn never wasted time on what perhaps she felt were trivial pursuits.

“I tended to shun woman who played golf or bridge,” she wrote in her memoir, Gulf Wife, published in 2014. These she said, were “expatriate pastimes that I had little or no time for”.

After Edward died in 1995, she decided to continue living in Abu Dhabi. In Gulf Wife, she wrote: “My home, even without

my husband, who first brought me here, is Abu Dhabi, thousands of miles away from my birthplace.”

A biographical summary, however, does little to explain the way in which Jocelyn Henderson emerged quietly as one of the most highly respected members of the capital’s British community. Until relatively recently, when she appeared at events such as the annual Remembrance Sunday services at St. Andrew’s, or receptions at the British Embassy, there was always a steady flow of people coming to pay court to her.

At home, in the company of her beloved dogs, Jocelyn shared with younger friends conversations that flowed from life in Abu Dhabi to comments on British politics, interspersed with shrewd, but never unkind, comments on prominent members of local expatriate society. Gently, over the years she lent a sympathetic ear, offering wise advice to many. The deep affection felt so widely for her was well-earned, well deserved.

“In the years to come,” she wrote in Gulf Wife, “I hope to be considered, like my husband before me, among those who made a difference to life here… I hope I left a small footprint on the sands of Abu Dhabi, of which I am so fond.”

That footprint is still fresh. We will, indeed, not see her like again.

Inside and out. The true magic of whind comes from the new kind of brand we want to build. A brand anchored in warmth, unapologetic beauty and kindness inspired by our Arab values and attitude to beauty. It is unapologetically different and yet so authentic to its roots with sensoriality and warmth infused in every detail from packaging to formula.

Tell us about the Moroccan heritage of whind and was this a key factor from the outset? Building whind was as much of a professional project as a personal journey into my identity and heritage. When I set out to build whind, I was obsessed with the idea of evocatively potent skin care, one that brings high performance products in a highly sensorial experience. This obsession was rooted on the overwhelming fact that the only skin care that works is the one you actually love to use every day.

Hyperformance products that once used every day become hyperperforming. My 20 years in the beauty industry taught me “the performance bit” or how to brief the best formulations and work with the best labs and chemists. But when it came to the sensoriality and overall vibe and aesthetic of the brand I found myself being increasingly inspired by my Moroccan heritage. I didn’t set up to build a brand inspired by Morocco but a brand that didn’t exist, one that exudes warmth, confidence and unapologetic sensorial beauty. Until one day, I realised that whind was imprinted by my vision of beauty, a vision inspired by my Moroccan upbringing.

Beauty anchored in warmth and sensoriality. Morocco is a land of implicit beauty and it is implicitly and delicately weaved into the soul of whind.

How did you know it was the right time to launch whind and what was the catalyst for you to make the leap? I think whind was with me for a very long time. More than 20 years ago with many seeds along the way. It started with a fascination for beauty aged five. At age fifteen, I was obsessing on scribbling brand names and other logos for “my brand” on the back of my notebooks. At twenty-two, it all morphed into starting a career in the beauty industry. Theree years on, creativity kicked in when I asked my parents to scout the traditional markets and send me What do your first 30 mins of the day look like, your morning every beauty ingredient they could find. right touchpoints with of course the right structure to ensure a sustainable business. For the brand to grow and be here in 100 years from now.

For such a personal project, I obsessed on surrounding myself with the perfect team to complement me from day one and built it over time as the brand building required it. All of team whind have three things in common: they are at the top of their game in their area of expertise, completely “get” me and the vision I had for whind and of course they are amazing humans that share my values and view of the world. I am thankful to them and couldn’t have done it without them.

What has been the biggest hurdle since launching and how did you navigate it? The biggest hurdle was launching during a pandemic: unexpected delays, lack of visibility and limited ability to connect in real life (a crucial element of the whind experience). The plan was to launch 6 products in February. We could only launch 2 in April so I decided to soft launch the brand anyway so we could start with 2 products only so we can start interacting with our consumers, test and learn. I am so glad I did because the learning curve has been amazing and enabled us to strengthen our plans for when we have a fuller launch (which is now).

Do you have any mentors or guides and how does this help navigate the right path? My first instinct is to always answer this question by saying I was very lucky to have had many, many wonderful mentors – women and men – throughout my professional career. But I think this is not just about luck but an active focus on surrounding myself with people I admired, and I am so thankful I did as they have massively contributed to shaping the person that I am today. The list is too long to go through, but I have to start with my father who was my day one mentor and gave me the best advice I have ever got which is “not to look for external validation – emotional or not – but to my skills or talent and believe in my inner worth”. This is the advice I try to pass on to my son and everyone I have the privilege to mentor. Then comes a long list – too many wonderful people to name each one by name – from my very first marketing Director at Procter & Gamble – Sophie Blum – who took me under her wing and made me see my leadership potential when I couldn’t see it myself yet, to Stephanie Dumas-Pilhou who saw my beauty and marketing potential and supported a never done before career move at Procter & Gamble at the time to Zaid Alqassab, who taught me almost everything I know about Beauty, Annie Murphy whose leadership style inspired me and of course Michel Brousset, my partner and co-founder at Waldencast (company under which I developed whind ) who enabled me to finally unleash my inner entrepreneur and embark on this wonderful journey to build a global, best in-class conscious and purpose driven beauty and wellness brand.

How have your previous roles supported the success of whind? I couldn’t have built whind as it is today without 20 years of beauty experience behind me. My skin care roles, on iconic brands such as Olay and L’Oreal Paris, taught me everything about skin care products, formulations and the best technology. Fun fact: it was in my very first role at Olay where I learned an insight that stayed with me for almost 20 years and is the foundation of whind: that the only skin care that works is the one you actually use. And that people stop using skin care that “works” for them because they do not enjoy the texture or the scent.

My brand and general management roles taught me how to plan a successful business and ensure that beyond a great insight, a great product and a great brand there is a solid growth plan with sustainable financials to scale it globally. Lastly, my interaction with thousands of consumers over the years enabled me to hone the above-mentioned insights and get a deep understanding of what they are missing.

What has been the most successful product to date globally? Medina Dew Melting Rose water cream has been an instant hit.

How has social media affected the beauty industry and which platform has been most useful? Social media has reshaped the beauty industry in so many ways. Firstly, by democratizing connections between brands to consumers and paving the way for the rise of indie brands as the cost to

That being said, I do also think with the proliferation of platforms and players, in what is more a non-regulated media space, it has also come with more questions on 2 major topics: source of authority vs. click bait and self-esteem vs. unrealistic mood boards. There is a lot to do and build over the upcoming years to drive a more responsible and accountable space.

What advice would you give to your younger self starting out?

What do your first 30 mins of the day look like, your morning routine? Home – I check daily sales figures, get up & showered, feed my cat, make a juice and do yoga.

Work – Each week day has a routine – I make a cup of tea, check my emails then on Monday I run through item by item sales & stock levels, Tuesday we start with a design and marketing meeting and then Wednesday, Thursday & Friday – a cup of tea and straight into designing!

What is the DNA of the brand, its core values?

We are a garment focused luxury brand, offering seasonless, wearable clothes – curating monthly ‘stories’ delivered in weekly drops. Making social and environmentally responsible decisions is business as usual for us. We are moving away from virgin fibres and harmful growing and dyeing production techniques.

Do you have a favourite go-to piece from the collection you’ve designed? Our denim is now all organic cotton and I love the ‘Dad’ style, they are baggy and oversized. We want customers to worry less about what size the label says, and focus more on how different sizes and styles suit them and make them feel themselves.

What pieces consistently drive sales YOY? Our denim – all styles in denim are fantastic and customers come back for their favourites in all styles and colours. Our cashmere has always performed well, it is now in recycled

yarn and our lightweight styles are in ‘cashmere-touch’ responsibly sourced merino.

Was this the goal from the outset and do you see these appealing to every age range and demographic when you design? Yes! We love that our customers are all ages and all walks of life! I wanted to move away from fast fashion and have pieces that you love and wear again and again – our goal is to make clothes people want to wear. Clothes that you see someone in on the street and have to go and ask them where they got it from! We shoot our collections on lots of different women and we always make sure to only have them wear styles that we think they would really wear.

You have clients on a global scale. Do you see any buying patterns from the Middle East?

Our longer knit dresses have historically been really popular across all styles and colours in the region, these have now been refabricated into super soft to touch recycled cashmere

and we are looking forward to seeing the customer reaction. Our casual wear covering organic denim, recycled fibre track-suiting and oversized T-shirts have resonated too – during and beyond the pandemic! Clients in the Middle East also love our luxury separates and our heavy silk shorts have been our best seller – working well across all colours.

What have been the largest challenges in creating the brand to date and how did you overcome these? Our sizing – we have long sleeves, oversized relaxed fits on garments and this is something our customers love but obviously it is not for everyone. Responsible material sourcing – making the change continues to be a challenge, many suppliers are not ready with ‘eco’ alternatives to traditional fibres yet so this is a long journey, but one we are completely dedicated to. The whole RAEY team is passionate about doing our homework so that the customers can choose our brand knowing we have done our research.

This year we celebrate the UAE’s 50th Anniversary – what makes this region special in your opinion when it comes to clients, aesthetics and taste? We love our Middle Eastern customers as they are confident in their choices and not driven so hard by trend which gives them a real affinity to the RAEY brand ethos. We have seen this region welcome the sophisticated relaxation of RAEY, and it’s very special to see how Middle Eastern women dress it up.

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine? I begin the day with a nutritious breakfast. As I’m a morning person, I look forward to waking up. I then move on to answering my emails and prepare a to-do list before leaving the house.

Depending on the day, I will either be heading to my warehouse or to the office. Every single day imposes a sense of newness. Either I’m dealing directly with the customers, managing suppliers or being more hands on with the design process.

What inspired you to launch ELVIRÉ? My family business inspired me to start something of my own. My father has his own import and export company, that really showed me the power of entrepreneurship. I’ve always loved fashion, so, travelling to Paris and seeing all the latest collections made me want to start my own brand. I love the winter season, so launching my own label that caters to the cooler months was the perfect fit.

The brand has adopted sustainable practices. Was this the mission from the outset? As a brand we believe sustainability goes beyond caring for the environment.

Sustainability is fundamental for success.

Consumers are more aware of ethical brand practices, especially millennials. We have adopted a pre-order service, this way we are not wasting any material and customers can still secure an ELVIRÉ piece. Without any compromise on our packaging, we ensure that each material is both sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Could you describe the design process at ELVIRÉ Paris? All the designing is done by our small team in Paris, who are extremely creative. We take inspiration from everywhere.

How important was the perfect fabrication to you and how long did it take to refine this?

Fabrication is extremely important. Majority of our fabrics come from South Korea, China and France. We make sure all fabrics meet the correct standard and this process usually spans between one to two months before we see the final result.

Which piece is your signature which drives sales season after season? Our faux fur range and our extra-long wool coat is definitely a must own. Our extra-long wool coat has been the most popular piece and continues to be so to date. The extra-long wool coat is a staple piece and its timeless appeal caters to a vast audience.

Do you feel more drawn to the creative or the business side of the brand and how have you grown the team to support this? I’m most certainly drawn to the business elements of the label. After pursuing a degree in business and economics, this side most definitely comes naturally to me. However, the creative side is great, along with the de-

How has social media affected the business and which platform has been most useful?

Social media has undoubtedly played a key role in shaping the business. With Instagram being our most powerful tool to spread the word, this has contributed to a major part in our success as we’ve managed to reach customers globally.

What do your first 30 mins of the day look like, your morning routine?

During the weekday, I go straight downstairs to wake up my kids and make breakfast. I make waffle or crepe batter every 3 days and keep it in the fridge, so mornings are fast but still delicious. Weekends I go straight to ‘my corner’ which is a comfy area of the couch surrounded by my journals, books and incense.

What is the DNA of the brand, its core values? Foundrae is rooted in humanity’s connection to universal symbols and the innate desire to find our purpose. Symbolism has always been my starting place; they are our tools of self-discovery and self-expression.

How did you know it was the right time to launch Foundrae and what was the catalyst for you to make the leap? I definitely didn’t know it was the right time and actually think that no time is ever perfect. To take a risk, to admit to the world what really makes your heart beat is really scary and made me feel very vulnerable.

I launched Foundrae anyway, even though I wasn’t sure if the timing was great and it was frightening. I felt I had to try because I didn’t feel whole, life is too short, and I wanted to do something more meaningful.

Do you feel more drawn to the creative or the business side of the brand and how have you grown the team to support this? I definitely feel more drawn to the creative side... luckily my husband is CEO, and we just hired a President, so that gives me plenty of freedom to be creative.

What has been the biggest hurdle since launching and how did you navigate it? It was definitely financial pressure. We had serious cash flow issues in the beginning of our business due to investing in production and staffing for example. Every spending decision was important because we just couldn’t do it all, so we had to prioritize.

Do you have any mentors or guides and how does this help navigate the right path? My parents and Murat (my husband) have the biggest influence on me. That’s where I get my encouragement.

How do you find working with your partner – do you divide and con-

quer across work scope? Murat and I have different job responsibilities – two halves make a whole.

What is the inspiration around the symbols you select and how do you ensure all pieces lead back to the DNA of the brand? I’m very careful to select symbols that have crossed cultural and religious boundaries and time. I think that it’s important that most people feel a sense of familiarity with them but also that they spark an interest in a new way.

You have clients the globe over – do you see any buying patterns based on regions or countries and have you seen any changes this year as a result of COVID-19? I haven’t really seen any dramatic geographic trends. I think that the popularity of social media has really blurred those lines.

How has social media affected the fine jewellery business and which platform has been most useful? Instagram helped us so much.

It’s really the primary way people are introduced to Foundrae, not just through our own feed, but when other people wear our pieces.

Which piece you personally own is most special to you and why? I’d say that the new symbol of Wholeness, Mind, Body, Soul, resonates in particular with me right now. I think a lot about the paths of ascension and the ancestors that came before me. I believe their souls reside inside me and that their experiences help to shape mine. I try to pay attention to that.

What is the most popular piece which consistently drive sales? Well, for the last year, I’d say Resilience definitely resonated with people.

What tips would you give anyone wanting to invest in a fine piece of jewellery? I think it should be a piece that you will wear every day.

What advice would you give to your younger self starting out? Do what is authentic to you, not what you think people want from you.

We’ve booked a trip to Dominica for the holidays where we will be sleeping in individual family tree houses. I’m pretty excited about escaping there.

What is the DNA of the brand, its core values?

EK: Totême is about curation and offering a sense of direction. We create modern takes on classic pieces that we make ours through our unique design DNA. It has a lot to do with shapes and silhouettes – elements that add distinction – but also how one puts it together. It’s an ongoing mission to define our woman’s life, needs and to in turn upgrade her wardrobe to match these requirements.

Our brand DNA is rooted in quality, distinct design cues, and a strong visual identity.

How did you know it was the right time to launch Totême and what was the catalyst for you to make the leap? EK: Starting a brand was something I had always dreamt of. In 2014 we had a clear idea of what we wanted to create and felt the timing was right. We envisioned a brand based on the wardrobe – with pieces that I was missing in my wardrobe. A brand with a strong point of view, a curated approach and a consistent expression.

Do you feel more drawn to the creative or the business side of the brand and how have you grown the team to support this? EK: When starting Totême, Karl and I didn’t quite understand the complexity of running a fashion brand, especially not the production side of things. But this also made us more willing to take risks and we have learnt so

much along the way. Today we’re lucky to have an amazing team by our side so that we can focus on the creative vision.

KL: From day one we placed a lot of trust in the individual and we continue to do so to this day. We believe in building an agile organisation that can easily be adjusted to meet new challenges and a work environment that is inclusive and benefits everyone who is willing to put in the work and commit to our journey forward. We are humbled by the fact that we get to work with so many talented individuals on a daily basis.

What has been the biggest hurdle since launching and how did you navigate this? As for most companies, there are always challenges and areas to improve. For us, it has been challenging to grow the organisation at the speed necessary to fulfil customer demand.

What is the inspiration for your designs and how do you ensure all pieces lead back to the

DNA of the brand? EK: The collections are built on what I feel like I’m missing in my wardrobe at the time. In that sense, it’s very much about the piece itself: its purpose and relevance, and how it fits in with the Totême wardrobe. The ongoing mission is to define our woman’s life and needs, and upgrade her wardrobe to match.

How did this partnership come about and how did you approach the curation of pieces?

The starting point was the question: “What does the Totême woman want to wear in the evening?”. The capsule showcases Totême’s occasion-centred approach to the wardrobe and covers complete looks for weekday dinners to special occasions.

Which piece in the collection do you feel is the hero piece and why? EK: At Totême we are obsessed with transitional pieces that take you from one situation to the next. This could be a desk to dinner solution that is easy to throw on when it’s Thursday and someone says “Dinner?”. In this capsule, that piece would be the Evening satin scarf, a snood-like satin layer to drape over your top or blazer.

What advice would you give to your younger self starting out? KL: Be prepared to make tough decisions along the way. Perhaps most importantly, follow your gut feeling and enjoy the process.

You founded the brand in France. What inspired you to expand Djula further afield?

Travelling the world and feeling the pulse of every city is super important for me. The starting point of every collection is a balance between observation and art. In fact, year after year, collection after collection, I like to make sure that Djula is always keeping up with the trends in the market, echoing pop culture and considering our clients’ tastes.

Djula is a mirror of today’s world and the relationship that people have with jewellery.

Art is also a key factor in the creative process as I am a very big fan of Art Nouveau. I enjoy

spending a lot of time in galleries that are in Paris, New York or LA. This is where I feel the most inspired when it comes to creating.

It is often my starting point when it comes to creating new collections, as each detail, colour and feel are a source of inspiration that I use to translate with diamonds and stones.

Why did you decide to expand to the Middle East? When Djula first launched, I noticed customers who were from the Middle East visiting our Paris and Los Angeles boutiques.

They were always interested in discovering the brand and learning about the new collections. Also, a few of the Djula launches were inspired by them. This showed me that the Middle East region is an important part of the brand’s success. Having the Djula pieces physically available in the region now has allowed the brand to be closer to our customers and reinforce the relationship.

How do you feel the jewellery space in this region differs from other parts of the world? It is fast-moving, and I love it. There is a genuine interest and enthusiasm around jewellery. There is a thirst for unique creations, designs, and trends.

You recently opened your Dubai Mall store – the flagship Djula store in the Middle East.

How long has this been in the works? We are very proud to have opened our flagship store in Dubai Mall as it was very important for Djula to be here and to get closer to our customers. It has been quite a journey to establish the Dubai Mall boutique as it is a new store concept which encapsulates one of the most vital pillars of the brand; the Djula Atelier Piercing.

Where do you get your motivation from on a daily basis? We started from the bottom and grew into a global brand – which is amazing.

Seeing Djula worn by women all around the world, having celebrities and influential profiles enter Djula boutiques and collections selling out is more than motivating for me.

The energy and drive that I have is inspired by our customers and my talented team.

What advice do you wish you had received at the beginning of your journey to success?

Believe in your dream, everything is possible when you follow your intuition.

What are your top three milestones from your career, so far? 1. The first time I saw my creations being worn on the red carpet; 2. The opening of the First Djula boutique in the US; 3. In 2020 when Djula joined the Chinese conglomerate Fosun. A strategic and important move that opened a new chapter for the brand.

What’s next for Djula? We will never stop creating new collections and developing new projects such as the opening of a new flagship store in Paris with a strong concept, as well as opening more boutiques in the Middle East and Asia.

What’s the story behind Djula? A few decades ago, I was very interested in finding a way to highlight the beauty of the everyday woman through jewellery pieces. Ever since I was a child, diamonds were a key element in all the stories I used to read and hear. I became increasingly fascinated by them as they were always portrayed as a sign of beauty and told their own story. This is what inspired me to create and design jewellery, thus Djula was born. I also wanted to make sure I was doing it my own way, doing it differently by breaking the traditional boundaries of jewellery design to highlight the uniqueness of each woman.

You first launched the brand in 1994. How has the brand evolved over the last 27 years? Since the launch of Djula, our brand mantra is to ensure we are mirroring today’s world when it comes to trends in jewellery. Years ago, it

Rami Al Ali has paved the way for designers throughout the GCC for the last 20 years. We discuss how the fashion space has changed in the region over the last two decades and the exciting journey that still lies ahead Can you talk us through your career? I graduated in 1995 from the Art College of Damascus University where I specialized in Visual Communications. In 1997, I moved to Dubai after working for two years at the Attasi Art Gallery in Damascus where I gained experience in the world of art, a true passion of mine. Upon arriving in Dubai, I worked at a few locallybased fashion houses where I learnt about techniques appreciated in the Gulf Region. In 2001, I was ready to start my very own brand, with modest steps and assigning my label’s true aesthetic and DNA. As starting any business, it wasn’t the easiest start yet my timing and the demand for my brand was on point. It was the beginning of the fashion scene in the region where many international brands settled themselves here and international media titles launched their regional editions.

What was the inspiration behind starting your own label in the UAE? I came to Dubai in 1997, where I came to assess the gap in the market in terms of taste, style, technique and customer service which I was accustomed to at a high level in both Syria and Lebanon. I also took the time to learn how to build a brand, form a team, connect with clients, and touch on the country’s marketing and PR style and in 2001, the time was right to start on my own fashion house. I didn’t feel I had my full freedom when working for others in making my vision a reality so I wanted to be independent and the huge demand for young designers was only growing.

It was the beginning of forming the new Dubai and I wanted to capitalize on being an active member in the region’s new fashion hub.

I was always mesmerized by the power of fashion as a communication tool throughout history and how fashion affects us as individuals and those around us. It is the fastest method of completely changing your mood and perception of others. A very powerful tool that I wanted to be part of and master.

This year marks 20 years of Rami Al Ali. How has the brand evolved? The beginning was difficult in terms of logistics but quite easy in terms of achievements and success. The competition was scarce and demand and possibilities of evolvement were endless. I started at the same time as Dubai’s hype had started and my brand quickly became associated with it.

Being able to achieve and reach our goals with such success keeps us looking forward to no limitations upon each completed milestone.

What advice do you wish you had received at the beginning of your journey to success? As cliché as it sounds, it’s learning from our own mistakes. Our mistakes have made us who we are today. I believe if I had received advice to avoid certain obstacles and had taken such advice, I would not be where I am today. I would repeat exactly what I have done and wouldn’t change a thing. Live and learn.

Which have been the biggest challenges to date since launching?

Typically, in the mornings I start with the Lancer Cleanser for Sensitive/Dehydrated Skin, followed by Dr. Barbara Sturm Balancing Toner to restore my skin’s pH level. After applying eye cream, I move on to Dr. Barbara Sturm Super Anti-Aging Serum and layer with a Vitamin C serum. I absolutely love doing this in the morning as the cold, rolling action really wakes me up and gets me going. Finally, I apply a moisturizer and always end with SPF 50.

How does your evening routine differ? During the evenings, I cleanse with a cleansing balm to effectively remove makeup and bacteria in a single go. I then follow with a toner as always to rebalance my skin’s pH before laying on the serums. In the evening, I use my NuFace device and about three times a week I do red and infra-red LED. I end my routine with a repairing moisturizer for the night, such as Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair, and when at home I believe it is much more beneficial for your skin to sleep on a silk pillowcase. Sleeping on

silk makes a massive difference in your skin’s ability to absorb your skincare products and reduces friction, thus reducing breakouts and stretching of your skin while you sleep.

What are your go-to skincare products? My go-to skincare products depend on what I feel my skin needs, the time of year, and especially the country I am in. Are you a fan of masks? I am a massive fan of masks! I love to keep them in the fridge so that they are nice and cooling when applied on my skin. What is the most unusual item in your makeup bag? Perhaps the most unusual item in my bag would be my SPF spray. During the day, I carry around SPF in the form of a mist or spray to top up throughout the day. As I have olive skin tone, I am prone to pigmentation and simply do what I can to avoid it.

Congratulations on the launch of Chapter Two of the Jannah collection designed with Her Highness Sheikha Fatima Bint Hazza Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

How do you think this collection will resonate with the women of this region? I think that is something that women here can wear very easily and they’ll be able to play with this kind of collection for any occasion. It’s easy to wear for every day, morning time, evening time and especially if you play with different layers [of the pieces] you can wear it any time. The colour palette is also quite neutral, not using too many colours, using mainly mother pearls – it’s very easy, very feminine and very elegant. At its core, the collection portrays love and peace, two key values from Sheikha Fatima’s grandfather, Sheikh Zayed.

Going back to the start of your journey with Bvlgari.

You began your career with them at the age of 18.

What's it been like to see Bvlgari grow through the years since you've been there? When I started with the company it was truly a family brand, they only had five stores. Can you imagine? Five stores, three brothers [Gianni, Nicola and Paolo Bulgari]. They are my mentors, my teachers and I learned everything from them. I had the opportunity to follow them on their trips around the world where I was able to see the best gems across the globe from the very beginning of my career. I then began to channel my creativity in this job and from following my mentors. I remember one of my key lessons from them was don’t buy a stone if you don’t know how to use it. So, I started to think in a creative way about being selective with gems and knowing how exactly I would use them.

My journey with the brand has been very special.

How did the Bulgari brothers instil the creative values that you have held onto through your career? I hope that I can bring with me the legacy that they shared with me. My goal is to share the legacy with my teams and to be Bvlgari forever.

So, even in a new collection, whether it has crazy creativity or something more classic, you can see the legacy of Bvlgari.

What are the key roles you have had with Bvlgari throughout the years? I started with Bvlgari at the grassroots of the business, selecting small stones, small gems. Then when we began to grow and to have more and more stores I could start to see difficulties in finding the best quality gems. When it was five stores, it was easy, but when we started to have 30, 40, 50 stores, it became more difficult.

It was a big challenge when I had to start buying more stones than in the beginning, but of the same quality. This involved more travel to be able to source more stones and gems. This eventually led to a bigger team being created and I created a team of buyers that could help me during these trips. In 2013, I became creative director [for Bvlgari Jewellery] this was a magical moment for me. It was a peak moment in my career, for me, because I was behind the high jewellery and the jewellery from the beginning, but it wasn’t in an official capacity, so that was an incredible milestone for me.

You’ve been with the brand for a long time and it’s got a very rich history. What do you think Bvlgari really represents to you at its core?

Tradition and values. Values of quality – in terms of gems, craftsmanship and creativity. This has been instilled in my mind every day from day one from Mr Bulgari. I’m still in touch with him even now and he always says don’t forget the quality. I hope to bring quality and this kind of value with me always.

Now to the Jannah collection which you first launched at the beginning of 2020. What was it like working with Her Highness Sheikha Fatima on this collection? Working with Her Highness was amazing because we felt immediately a great connection. She started to talk about her family, her traditions, culture, her grandfather [the late Sheikh Zayed, Father of the Nation] and the mosque that the grandfather created. So the first thing that I did, I went to the mosque, and I saw how beautiful it was. It was very clean, white, marble, simple with incredible geometry. In fact, it reminded me of the geometrical nature of our jewellery. So then we started to think about something feminine, but not too romantic, but contemporary [for the collection]. We mixed the idea of the flower [for the Jannah collection] with geometry and I could find that in the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. With Her Highness, we worked together step-bystep, she was very was involved in the whole process. It was a great opportunity. It was an honour to work with Sheikha Fatima and it was incredible to enter this region with a Bvlgari touch. It was a challenge, but a beautiful challenge.

We’re celebrating 50 years of the UAE – what does this region represent to you? We share a lot of core values together [Italy and the UAE] with our culture and we have so many clients from this region right from the start. I remember when Mr Bulgari told me stories about his trips here many years ago. We’ve had a great relationship with this region from the beginning and we look forward to continuing it.

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine? The very first thing I do is drink coffee, then I move on to reading my emails, before starting with my daily fitness routine.

What makes Le Bristol superlative in terms of stay?

Le Bristol Paris is an icon of French elegance and art de vivre, boasting 190 completely renovated rooms and suites in the heart of Paris. It is an exceptional setting best known for its outstanding dining tradition. There are two Michelin-star restaurants onboard, one being Epicure (which has three Michelin stars) and the other 114 Faubourg (which has one Michelin star) – both are exceptional. The other facilities include a lush courtyard garden and an iconic rooftop swimming pool.

What is the Hero Dish at Le Bristol Paris? The most iconic dish is called ‘Candele’ – a stuffed macaroni with black truffle, artichoke and duck foie gras, gratinated with mature Parmesan cheese and black truffle juice. This is served at Epicure, at Le Bristol Paris and is a truly signature dish.

What is luxury in the industry today? Each person has a different and very personal vision and interpretation of luxury. For my part, if I had to have an image, it would be the possibility of dining in a Michelin starred restaurant such as Epicure to name one. This three-star Michelin restaurant situated in the heart of Le Bristol Paris, allows diners to have time, to take advantage of every moment, to have space, to feel almost alone in the world and to witness the beautiful ballet.

Broadly speaking, the art of living in the moment undoubtedly represents luxury in my eyes.

I am really attached to Mahatma Gandhi’s quote: “A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him. He is not an interruption in our work. He is the purpose of it. He is not an outsider in our business. He is part of it. We are not doing him a favour by serving him. He is doing us a favour by giving us an opportunity to do so.”

What has been your approach to client retention and scaling the business to date post COVID? We closed the doors of Le Bristol Paris for six months from March to September 2020 during the pandemic, giving us the opportunity to renovate our rooms and suites and to reimagine our 1,200m² garden. Since reopening in September 2020, we are grateful to have been able to continue our activity, and to welcome guests from all around the world.

I am sure that you can feel our happiness in the air throughout the hotel. Every detail counts, even if we haven’t seen our guests for a few months. When they come back, they will still feel at home. The team anticipates our guests’ every wish and truly cares about the details for them to feel the same.

What unique features set Le Bristol Paris apart from the other hotels? I think Le Bristol Paris strikes the harmonious balance between preserving traditional values, service, and elegance with a truly modern outlook. An insect hotel has been built in it, along with six rooftop beehives which recently produced 198kg of delicious honey in a year.

Another project we are very proud of is the launch of our Living Bread. In 2018, Chef Eric Frechon brought a flour mill to the hotel to bring 100 per cent natural ‘Living Bread’ back onto the gastronomic table. We give our guests the option of not changing their bed and bath linen daily, in order to enable significant savings in water and energy. We also collaborate with the cosmetic brand, Tata Harper in order to offer highend, natural and clean green products.

Being Australian, I have never really associated the festive season with winter. Instead, we celebrate outdoors by the beach and have barbeques in the hot summer sun. Eucalyptus and beautiful Christmas bush foliage always reminds me of the festive season. I love having “Christmas lilies” in the house as this is a tradition me and my husband have taken on from his family in New Zealand. The scent is amazing and very nostalgic to him.

Which signature bouquet would you suggest for a host during the festive season? I would suggest anything that has a scent as it always will bring you back to this special time in the year. Everyone celebrates this festive season differently, so I don’t think there’s any right or wrong way to go.

I personally love to add unique elements during the winter season that aren’t available throughout the year such as pine cones and different dry elements that last for a longer timeframe. Think adding eucalyptus, painting the pine cones with gold and adding red flowers, for example, this gives a beautiful combination to the floral bouquet and adds a charming contrast that is reflected resulting in a classic look of green, gold, and red. As for the lovers of silver, your winter bouquet can include silver elements mixed with white roses for a gorgeous frosty look.

Which signature bouquet would you suggest for a host during the festive season? Personally, my signature festive bouquet includes more hues of white and silver mixed with sparkling elements and pinecones. Just like we have at the Forever Rose Cafe, I love to spray my bouquet with white and frost giving an indoor winter wonderland feeling.

There is no question that our ‘One Fine Night Centrepiece’ is the ultimate gift for a host, festive yet stylish and a total show stopper.
