A vintage touch at an affordable price

It was a day in October 2021, while I was casually browsing through my Instagram feed that I came across a new release from Baltic, the MR01. I was so drawn into the visual that it took me a few long seconds to get to the name of the watch. I found it hard to look away from that beautiful face; watch face that is. The moment I laid eyes on the Baltic MR01, I knew it was something special. Founded in

2016, Baltic is a French watch brand with a mission to deliver quality, vintage-inspired timepieces at accessible prices. While many brands make similar claims, few achieve Baltic’s level of consistent quality, character, and identity. Explore their collection and see why they deserve your attention, and possibly your buck too. Launched in 2021, the MR01 took the watch enthusiast community by storm. It struck a perfect balance between size, design, and features, offering a vintage aesthetic with modern functionality. The watch is housed in a 36mm stainless steel case which for a person with slender wrists like mine was just music to the ears, although – and I’m happy to say this – these days smaller-sized cases appeal to a much wider audience. Applied Breguet numerals, a sub-dial, faceted leaf hands, and a grainy dial imbue the watch with undeniable character.

The domed plexiglass crystal adds a touch of vintage charm, its distortions offering an interesting visual experience at certain angles. The watch practically begs to be admired, not just for its captivating face but also for its exhibition case back.

Witnessing the micro-rotor winding mechanism decorated with blued screws, perlage, and circular graining is a mesmerising experience. With a 42-hour power reserve when fully wound, this timepiece does a good job keeping pace with your busy life.

Baltic offers a variety of dial and strap options including leather and stainless steel. While all of the options offered are undeniably attractive, the grey dial paired with a green leather strap creates a particularly striking combination, in my view. So, how much does this feature-packed watch cost? A mere Dhs2,000. Let that sink in.

The Baltic MR01 delivers an elegant and thoughtful design, and an interesting movement, all at an accessible price point. It’s no wonder the initial batch sold out so quickly. But fear not – the watch is now available for online orders through their website.

“…WHEN YOU THINK OF SOMETHING AND YOU MULTIPLY THAT BY EFFORT AND MAYBE PERSEVERANCE AND CONSISTENCY, SUDDENLY IT CREATES A COMPANY OR A SHOW. SO I DO BELIEVE IN IT, BUT NOT ALONE. YOU HAVE TO ACT, YOU HAVE TO MOVE”

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine – and are there non-negotiable practices? I’m a very routine guy. For the first 30 minutes as I wake up, I really try not to touch my phone, at least for a few minutes, so that I don’t wake up with problems and complaints. Just a few minutes, and then I check my phone. My WhatsApp doesn’t stop. Then I drink green juice, which is supposed to be healthy, and then I work out straight away. Either with my trainer or I do cardio or sauna and an ice bath. Then I have lunch usually around 12pm and go to the office and do physical meetings. I also train six times a week. When did you know you would build a platform to connect with others? #ABtalks? I think I wrote the concept on paper in 2014 and it came to real life in 2018.

It was everything I didn’t like in the media, and I chose to do the opposite. My experiences with different TV media were very short interviews, and so with #ABtalks, I wanted no limits on interview time. Guests have the freedom of expressing themselves whether crying, swearing, or just showing vulnerability. I didn’t like basic and superficial questions and I thought, let’s go real and raw, and more personal. I felt we didn’t have that in our region and that was so needed. That’s why the slogan is covering the human behind the title – who are you behind what you do for a living?

Are there specific topics that are generally doing well for you and your guests? The topics I like to talk about literally apply to any person. So if I say, “Camille, how was your childhood? What were your best and worst moments? What was the hardest decision in your life? What do you think about love? Who are you when nobody’s around?”, I can apply the same questions to any person

– and we can talk for hours because all of us go through all of this. So it has nothing to do with race, religion, culture, or nationality. You have an entrepreneurial spirit, what is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken? And did it pay off? I think I am a calculated risk person – I’m not too reckless but I’m also not too careful. Skydiving is a good example. If we think of skydiving, before you go and book, you check the reviews, you check how good the company is and their safety precautions are good. Then you go and jump but there’s still a risk. So is it still a risk? Yes. So I think the same with business and entrepreneurship.

I think leaving a corporate job after 12 years was a risk. It was a very promising corporate career. I was married at the time and had a child then so it’s not like I’m alone, and that if I don’t make it, I don’t make it. It’s just me. But no, I have a family. To leave all of that and reduce my salary to peanuts, but then get satisfied elsewhere, which is, you know, owning my time doing what I love, and then slowly, slowly, that becomes better than a corporate job. What brings clarity to your life, both professionally and personally? I think if you find or feel that you’re really doing what you were meant to do, it gives you clarity because you are in alignment. You do what you love, you don’t feel like it’s a job. You’re not only better benefiting yourself, but you’re benefiting humans and people around you.

I find it very thrilling to know that so many people work with me and I’m taking care of them and their families. Bukhash Brothers (influencer marketing agency) has 40 employees and Chalk (hair salon) has 35… It’s a beautiful responsibility to be able to produce an environment for people to be working together. I thrive on responsibility. What is the best tool for combating negativity and leading a life focused on positivity? I wish people had that answer, it would be so easy. That’s a huge question and I don’t think there’s a magical answer. But I do think when you have conviction within yourself, it’s kind of like confidence. If you’re not confident, and I made fun of your clothes or your look, you’ll feel suddenly insecure. The more you build your skills, you become more confident.

With social media, people love to criticise, so if you’re reading too much of the

comments and remarks, it might affect you even if you think it won’t. I try to filter that out and not get so exposed to negativity. Generally, just have a good balance and be with people who level you up and around family who love you. Exercise is also good for the mind and feeling good within yourself and feeling healthy – all of these things can contribute.

Do you believe in manifestation and the ability to create what you can visualise? If you sit on your sofa and visualise for 100 years without action, nothing would happen. Visualising is just one part of the formula. I can visualise all I want but action is way more important. But it does start with a thought, absolutely. Everything you see in the studio, the team came from a thought. It’s beautiful – when you think of something and you multiply that by effort and maybe perseverance and consistency, suddenly it creates a company or a show. So I do believe in it, but not alone. You have to act, you have to move.

Have you had any mentors on your journey? And if so, what knowledge did they impart? I never had a typical story where I say this person – celebrity, athlete, friend or family – is my role model or my mentor. I think I’ve learned and get inspired by different people and their values, but then you have to see what applies to your life.

Of course, I think my foundation is my mother. She brought up a lot of us and she instilled in us a lot of values. My father had his influence, but I think more than my mother. I have enough character and she built enough confidence in us to also make our own decisions on what we think. What advice would you give to your younger self? You’re in for a surprise.

The timepieces at Dubai Watch Week that made an impact

The sixth edition of Dubai Watch Week, founded by Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, took place in November 2023 with over 60 participating brands – ten of whom were present there for the very first time. Here are six timepieces that were launched at the event that made a big impression on the global watch community.

CHOPARD L.U.C STRIKE ONE

At the 2019 edition of the Dubai Watch Week, Chopard memorably undertook the global launch of its Alpine Eagle collection. Its presence at the 2023 edition of the Watch Week therefore sparked much anticipation as to what it would bring to the table, and it didn’t disappoint. As part of the 25th anniversary of the L.U.C collection, it unveiled this L.U.C Strike One which is limited to 25 pieces. This timepiece is a chronometer-certified watch and features the Poinçon de Genève hallmark too. The 40mm case is made from white gold, and the dial is also made from gold – hand guillochéd with a honeycomb design. The slim opening on the dial between 12 o’clock and 1 o’clock reveals the hammer that strikes the brand’s patented monobloc sapphire delivering pure tones.

ASTON MARTIN EDITION

Only two years after the Swiss watchmaker and the British auto manufacturer joined hands, the pair have unveiled the fifth timepiece to come out of that collaboration –this Neo Bridges Aston Martin Edition that works off the watchmaker’s Bridges collections and draws its inspiration from the carmaker’s DB12. Limited to 250 pieces, the 45mm watch has a case made from titanium and coated with black DLC. The dial, thanks to the automatic winding Calibre GP0840000-2164 whose baseplate

also serves as the dial, has been engineered such that many of the components that would otherwise be tucked away into the back of the watch have now been brought to the front. The joint creative team of the two entities worked on this timepiece, and that collaboration is prominently displayed here with the micro-rotor at 10 showing the ‘Designed by Aston Martin’ words while the drum of the mainspring barrel at 2 o’clock is covered with the words: ‘Powered by Girard-Perreguax’.

GIRARD-PERREGAUX NEO BRIDGES

ULYSSE NARDIN FREAK ONE OPS

This 44mm case features a titanium case and carbonium bezel, the latter is UN’s carbon-based composite material. Its carbon fibre is reportedly sourced from aircraft wings and fuselages in order to reduce its environmental impact by 40 per cent compared to other carbon composites. Adding to the aesthetics of the watch is the absence of a crown which therefore gives it a balanced and symmetrical appearance

(in case you were wondering, you can set the time by rotating the bezel). This is an automatic winding watch, although the watch can be manually wound too if the outer frame of the caseback is rotated. It comes with green and black khaki straps which comprise 30 per cent recycled rubber sourced from production waste. However, the highlight of this watch is the dial that showcases a truly freakish feat of avant-

garde watchmaking – the entire escapement and balance assembly is mounted on the minute bridge, and it completes a rotation around the watch every 60 minutes. That minute bridge effectively serves as an orbital flying carrousel tourbillon too.

VYNTAGE HOROLOGY MONOGRAPH INNER CIRCLE

Vyntage Horology is an all-new brand presented by the third generation of the Seddiqi family. It features two collections, Monograph and Purity, fitted with Swiss hand-finished movements. Both collections have Grand Feu enamel dial versions. The Monograph Inner Circle (pictured here) is a 40mm timepiece with hand-applied Breguet numerals. The dial colour is inspired by the sky at midnight. The Purity Inner Circle watch is slightly smaller at 39mm and has its crown placed at 4 o’clock. The white enamel dial on that timepiece also has hand-applied Breguet numerals. While both those pieces have now sold out, the good news is that coming soon are a Monograph edition with Arabic numerals and a Purity model with Roman numerals.

RESSENCE TYPE 1° DX3

A six-year partnership between Ressence and Ahmed Seddiqi and Sons resulted in two previous releases in 2019 and 2021. In 2019, the Type 1DXB Dubai Edition was an open-worked version of the Type 1 Squared, while the Type 1 Slim DX2 was introduced two years later to mark the UAE’s 50th founding anniversary and featured geometric patterns on the dial. Now, that collaboration has culminated with this TYPE 1° DX3 timepiece released at Dubai Watch Week. The pebble-shaped case is made from grade 5 titanium and frames a dial with an Arab geometric art pattern on it that is further covered with Super-LumiNova and coated with rose gold too. That dial takes on a new twist when you consider that the main disc and the sub-dials denoting the hours, minutes, seconds and day of the week are constantly in motion.

HUBLOT CLASSIC FUSION BLACK MAGIC DIAMONDS DUBAI WATCH WEEK

Wissam Shawkat, whose roots trace back to Basra, is a well-known calligraphy artist within the region. Changing Times

We discuss craftsmanship and changing the game in the watchmaking industry with Mateo Rossi, co-founder of Rose Auctions

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine – and how non-negotiable are these practices? I usually wake up around 7am and walk the dog –followed by catching up on some emails, taking some calls, and then heading to the gym around 10. If I’m honest, the gym often gets put on the backburner – I should probably do gym then emails!

When did you decide to launch Rose Auctions and what are the core pillars of the brand? The project has been in our minds for a little over two years now, it took us some time to put everything together due

to French bureaucracy, but we managed. What we’re looking to do is make auctions fun and accessible to everyone with transparent fees, and an easy-to-understand consignment and buying process.

How did you know it was the right time to take the leap and with whom did you establish the business? The company was built by three friends, Damien Juliat, Romain Combe and myself. To be honest, I think we launched at the worst possible time – we would’ve loved to launch earlier but due to paperwork we were quite delayed. This resulted in us launching in October 2023 – a

very slow period for the watch market after the big boom the watch industry experienced during Covid. We still managed and are only looking forward now.

How has Rose Auctions approached changing the watch industry? Two of the founders, Damien Juliat and myself have been in the industry and buying at auction for quite some time now, we therefore applied all the issues we saw with traditional auction houses and tried to address them directly. One of the key issues for us was the speed of transaction. With traditional auction houses, from dropping off your watch and getting paid, the timeframe can take up to six months – with Rose Auctions, we try our best to keep that under two months at most. Authenticity and persistence are gamechangers. How have these attributes shown up in your life? I’ve always tried to stick to my taste when collecting, buying and selling watches, whether the watch matches the current trends or doesn’t – the bottom line is whether I like it and would see myself own and wear it – this authenticity has transpired to my clients who they too have their own taste and opinions on pieces. Persistence is something we’re living with Rose Auctions, it’s a long journey to build an auction house but it’s going well so far, and we’re excited to keep pushing things for a bigger and better 2024.

Have you had any mentors on your journey and if so, what knowledge did they impart? I wouldn’t say mentors, but I have people I’ve worked with and am now partnered with. We all learn from each other, the older from the younger and the younger from the older.

What was the first watch you owned and why? The first watch I owned was a Rip Curl watch I bought in an outlet in Queensland, the first watch I owned was a Patek Philippe ref. 5065a Aquanaut – both were do-everything watches, the Patek just exhumes a little more class elegance!

Which watch is on the grail list? I’m very much into Grand Complication Patek Philippe watches and dressing them down with a tee-shirt and jeans. I’d love a nice 2499 or 1518, but also a 2497 – the seconds hand just brings a little extra life to the dial of the watch.

For anyone starting to collect watches or wanting to invest in a special piece, what would you suggest? In everything I’ve started I’ve tried to go all in and give it my all, whether when I played rugby, used to skateboard or now with watches, I like to focus on quality over quantity – buying the best piece in terms of condition, set and provenance my money can buy.

What would you look for when buying a vintage watch? Really focus on quality of the watch, making sure all parts, are original and have been properly cared for in its past ownership. Every watch has a price, even one without papers, changed parts etc. – this is also what’s great with our auction platform, you know you’re bidding against someone so whatever price you pay, someone else was willing to pay the price under that.

How the multifaceted home of Ahmad Almuhassin, Villa Aumèdan, has become a part villa, part concept store, floral boutique and the secret neighbourhood coffee shop

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine? I wake up early every day, my day doesn’t start without praying, having my cup of coffee and my lactose intolerance pills. I am an early riser, I wake up at 6 and aim to be quite fast in my morning routine. I always make sure, I avoid checking my phone directly when I am in bed and mostly begin to do that when I get into my car. My mornings define my whole day, so it’s those 30 minutes in the morning that matter to me. I also have a quick catch-up with my loved ones in the morning and make sure they are in good health. Talk us through your background? I grew up regionally between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. My childhood was mostly around my family, travelling around the world with my father, all the way to Australia, London, Thailand, France, Costa Rica, Italy and more. This is what shaped me within my formative years, as I was getting exposed to different cultures at a young age. I also studied Mass Communications and PR, while minoring in photography. Yet, I have always been passionate about lifestyle, food, flowers and specific brands and the creative directors behind them. My creative process depends on the city I am in, the surroundings and especially my friends who are around me. I would say that this plays a huge role in my life and it does affects the final outcome of the product design that I would be working on, whether it’s a campaign, or a new brand that I am launching at Villa Aumèdan or even a new flavour of coffee that we will be introducing in the secret “If you know, you know Cafe” at Villa Aumèdan. What inspired you to launch Villa Aumèdan? My inspiration behind Villa Aumèdan comes from many different aspects honestly. My first drive when I got Villa Aumèdan was to live in it, and guess what, I actually did. I was always amazed by the houses in the south of France when my family and I used to travel in summer and spend our time in those simple villas in Côte d’Azur yet they have always inspired me to have something similar in Dubai, such as a one story villa with a private pool and a small garden – this is heaven for me. But a few months later, I thought of opening the flower studio which my sister Noura AlMuhassin who is the Managing director at Villa Aumèdan right now, is the brainchild behind. I surprised her by building up a whole studio complemented by a big fridge in the transformed Garage. She never expected that surprise and I handed it over to her right away. Yet I was still living in the villa and always wanted to have my own coffee bar and always wanted to call it “If you know, you know Cafe” and that is the whole point why it is hidden in the villa. This concept has several components including a concept store, coffee shop and floral boutique – how do you balance all the elements? Every section in the villa complements the other, and I believe that is the magic that the place holds. If you like to be surrounded with beautiful art pieces and nature, this is the zen place that you want to be in.

It’s a 33-year-old one-story space – talk us through the interiors. I am not sure if you can imagine what a 33-year-old villa would look like, but I am sure you can tell how beautiful the architecture is of it. The design of Villa Aumèdan and it's structure is exceptional, but it was not painted, not elevated, and it needed so much work and I would say I have done some things from scratch and all by my own. I have kept the old elements but I have uplifted and added some architectural elements. I had to keep the DNA of the villa its so beautiful and the texture of the walls that the villa holds is so special that no one does nowadays. It’s like getting a classic Rolls-Royce and taking care of it all over again, not just that but also driving it around in Jumeirah!

It makes me so happy and proud to say that I have attracted the right people at the right place.

Villa Aumèdan has been converted into a space of prominent brands along with bouquets being provided for names such as Level Shoes, Christian Louboutin and Dolce & Gabbana – tell us more. We aim to set high standards in all types of arrangements whether it’s flower bouquets or vase arrangements, or customised orders. We have achieved a prominent name in the market, as designers continue to approach us, and we are always more than happy to be part of the fashion world. As a Creative Director, we get inspired on a daily basis from designer pieces that we come across during our day while running errands, and we cannot neglect the fact that some pieces get stuck in our minds for some time. Our cre-

ative process starts from here. We get the brand requests, we study the brand and its latest collections and the mood of the season, and based on it we create our florals. Overall, you always have to trust the process. Trust me, it might not work the first time, but you have to keep your eye on the goal to always be able to achieve it.

The cosy coffee shop playfully called ‘If you know, you know’, is also attached to the home –what are some of the key dishes offered? We offer all types of specialty coffee, soft serve that we are super famous for, cookies and fortune cookies.

“If you know, you know” cafes have expanded in the last year and we have opened branches in Abu Dhabi and one branch in Fujairah and will soon do so in other emirates as well. What piece of advice would you give to your younger self? Ideally, I would say to be patient, but no – if I was patient, I would not have achieved what I have achieved in the past three years. So, chase you dreams and keep learning throughout the process. What ahead lies for the future of Villa Aumèdan? Villa Aumèdan will always remain in the heart of Jumeirah as a hidden gem that is based in Dubai but the plan is to definitely elevate and bring the experience to the whole world through e-commerce and expanding globally in the Gulf region and of courses internationally where we have already managed to do that in the UK in collaboration with Harrods department store as we took over the penthouse during summer where we had all the khaleejis and audience from the UK and Europe who came to visit.

How would you best describe your style? I am the person who would get two pairs of Adidas Sambas in different colours and mix the two pairs together. I love collecting watches, on my wishlist right now is the Patek Philippe Ellipse. Yayoi Kusama is one of my favourite artists and I always buy pieces of her collaborations with other brands. I usually dress up in a smart casual look but I always like to add a twist to the outfit.My recent favourite brands are, le 17 September, Nanushka,N.peal (my favourite cashmeres) and my travel leather goods only include Hermès, as I think it just reflects my personality. I am an extrovert but at the same time I also like to have my own quality time with myself and get into my Derek Rose pajamas and stay home for the whole day. Travelling is my remedy and whenever I feel something hasn’t gone the way I wanted or as planned I always take a step back, book my Emirates airlines ticket , pack up my Rimowa trunks and fly. London is my second home, Dubai is where the heart is, “IYKYK”.

Ultrarunner William Goodge discusses completing the 3,076-mile journey from Huntington Beach, Los Angeles to Central Park, New York and what kind of mindset it takes to achieve the extraordinary

AT A TIME

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine? I like to wake up and replenish my electrolytes and get ahead on hydration straight away by using a couple of Humantra sachets with water. I wake up before sunrise so have to leave any exposure to later, but wherever I am I’ll put on my favourite songs of the moment and get ready to go and do my first training session of the day. The gym or out for a run. Talk us through your background. I am from a small town in the UK called Ampthill, about an hour north of London. I grew up playing every sport I could, ironically one of the only ones I didn’t like too much was running long distance! I had an amazing but somewhat normal upbringing, when school was over I decided to go travelling to Thailand and

Australia instead of going to University. When I got back, my sport was rugby and I ended up playing semi-professionally. This was my life until I found running.

You completed the 3,076-mile journey in 55 days, what mindset practice helped you through this?

I would always ask myself when things got tough “can I take another step?”. A very simple question and a very simple act to say yes and do it. There is rarely a moment in life, no matter how tough it is, that you can’t make forward progress.

During the journey you powerwalked for 12 hours straight after running for two weeks – tell us more. This was a day in Oklahoma, the weather had changed quite drastically to gale force winds and rain blowing directly in my face. It was a conscious decision for me that trying to run through that would take a lot more effort. I worked it out mathematically that if I power walked at 4mph I would get to 50 miles in just over 12 hours. This meant my usual stops every 6 miles would become walk throughs. My crew would have everything ready, as they always did, and would walk with me to change my bottles and give me food. I skipped my usual midday nap and just powered through. There was some beauty in the misery and I did it for three days total.

Your radical change of mindset got you through the experience – what was the challenge and how did you overcome it? It’s very hard to look at the whole of America, or 3000 plus miles and understand what that is going to take. The biggest challenge for me was pushing so hard every day and knowing I was only a fraction of the way there. It was too big to think about so I had to pull back from the bigger picture and concentrate on the day at hand, or the next 6 miles. We got into a great routine so things were running like clockwork, this gives you confidence. I was also always ahead of my initial goal to finish in 64 days, so there was an element of competitiveness with myself of just how much quicker I could finish. You have a lot of time out there on your own to think, so creating reasons to go harder were always creeping up on me. The motivation to embark on this expedition came from a deeply personal place – tell us more. My reason for getting into extreme running was through the untimely death of my mum, Amanda. Seeing someone fight for their life and show much strength gives me a perception of ignorance to my own suffering which could be much worse. I realised very early

on after her death, that as a 23-year-old I had every excuse to wave the white flag and give up on life for some time. I could have thrown some of my life away and everyone would have allowed me freedom because they knew what I was going through. But I simply couldn’t. I had to show the world just how strong my mum was by doing something to make it mean something more than a sad story. I’m a big believer now that emotions equals energy. Heightened emotion like anger, pain, even incredible joy can be channeled into a physical output. Through this we have raised over £250,000 for charities, which I am incredibly proud of and I know my mum would be too. It all came from her.

During this journey, elaborate on what a day in the life of William Goodge looked like? Wake up: before sunrise, this changed across the country as we crossed four time zones. I would have a bowl of cereal and a coffee, I liked starting the day light and fuelling across the day. My crew would take off and go approximately 6 miles ahead for each stop. The first two stops I would consume a high kcal smoothie with things like protein powder, nut butters and frozen fruit and vegetables alongside pastries. Stop 3 was my favourite stop because Chef Pete would have made me a breakfast sandwich, some meat and egg in some kind of bread. After that it would change a bit to fruit, high salt items like crisps and pretzels, anything I fancied. The further east we got the more built up the areas got so I would also add in a coffee stop. This would usually be a gas station. Not the best coffee but I really enjoyed having a moment to go inside and do something ‘normal’ for a second before leaving to walk with my coffee. At mile 30 it would usually be a big lunch and nap time for 40 minutes in my bed inside a crew vehicle. I used an app on my phone called NuCalm that au-

tomatically puts you into a nap-like state through music in headphones and wearing a sleep mask. I would also put on compression boots so I could increase bloodflow to my legs and move around any inflammation. When I woke up Pete or Robbie would bring me a big lunch. Usually something from dinner the day before like a bean and meat chilli or a sandwich, avocado on the side, some rice. Then, it’s back out the door. 30 to 55 miles – this was when the crew members would usually join me. Pete and Robbie are amazing runners themselves, so they would help break up the boredom by coming out with me, these were my favourite moments. Plenty of laughs and most of our talks were about what we would do when we finished! The same stop plan, every six miles for refuelling. Once the running was finished I would clock my watch and get back to the main camper van to shower, change and eat a big Chef Pete dinner. We tried to make this process quick so I could sleep as much as possible, but it was never rushed. I really loved the moments of eating dinner with the crew. It was a normal moment in an otherwise chaotic time. I might sacrifice 20 minutes of sleep, but for my happiness it was essential.

What’s your fitness mantra? What is the limit? It is an ever moving target as once you think you have found it, it’s moved again. It’s good to have something to chase, remain unsatisfied.

What advice would you give to your younger self? Everything is going to be okay. Enjoy the moments now, show appreciation to the ones you love. You’re in for a hell of a ride, but you have the strength to see it all through. It’s going to be exciting! This is The Emirates Man Spring/Summer Issue – how would you best describe your style? I live in the fashion and running world, which isn’t usual. I use both to express myself equally, whilst running I’ll be in 247 Represent or Vuori. Outside of that my style is diverse, I couldn’t describe it in a sentence as it takes many forms. I have a particular passion for sunglasses and will be releasing my own brand later this spring / early summer. It occupies both worlds, glasses you can wear to a fashion event or dinner or the running track. Function plus Fashion. It’s called RIZK.

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine? The first 30 minutes of my day are easily the most important as they predictably put me in a peak state to serve. I like to break it up into three components spending 10 minutes on each: soul/spirit, body and mind. The sequence is highly essential.

SPIRIT/SOUL (10 MINUTES)

∙ The first 10 minutes is priming.

∙ Three minutes of going over all the things I’m grateful for.

∙ Three minutes of pure breath work in order to bring me into the present moment.

∙ Three minutes of letting my imagination create what could happen if I was my best self.

BODY (10 MINUTES)

This 10 minutes is dedicated to giving my body the nutrients it needs to thrive. I actually eat a big breakfast, smaller lunch and less or nothing in the evening as I feel this honours my circadian rhythm the best.

∙ Protein and fats (keeps my energy and dopamine stores high)

∙ Bone broth for gut health

∙ Sauerkraut for gut health

∙ Supplements – Zinc, Multi, Omega-3, curcumin, and PQQ for overall health

MIND (10 MINUTES)

Then I go over all the technical side of my day such as clients’ programmes, my training, education, recovery, and general matters to take care of. I generally prioritise the most critical tasks first and then work backwards. When energy is the highest, it makes sense to undertake the tasks that carry the most relevance.

What is at the core of your approach to transformations? I like to take my opinion out of it and use a client centred approach. This means understanding the client and then

authoring the regime, rather than the other way round. From here I break it up into two components. Logic – what is the goal? and Math – what is the most efficient path there?

The logic: First and foremost the client’s goal in detail is the most important. I’ve broken down most clients goals into four domains and I encourage them to explore the depth of their intended outcome.

The four domains:

∙ Deep health – how you feel

∙ State of mind/mindset – how you think

∙ Body composition – how you look

∙ Strength and performance – how you move

Once we have clarity on the goal we can then use solid science to apply a framework that will produce the best possible outcome. The math: The details that will get us there. What kind of workouts ie cardio vs strength, which exercises are the most relevant, what framework best applies ie sets, reps, tempo etc, most relevant recovery strategies to ensure constant progression, most effective nutrition and nutraceutical protocols. In a perfect world this should yield the most efficient path for the client to see the exact result they are after. Motivation is great, however what trumps that is seeing and getting what you want with the highest relevance. How important are other factors such as nutrition and sleep to achieving optimal results?

Very. The way I like to think about it is, let’s say we wanted to create something with our body ie. lose weight, build muscle, get stronger. We will need two things to happen. Firstly, we need to send the body a specific message to change and secondly the body must be in a state to receive this message. Essentially, nutrition and sleep prepare the body to receive the message and then training sends the message in the form of a request i.e. build muscle, get stronger, speed up weight loss. We must send and receive successfully. There are obviously many variables to that

equation, however I believe that’s a good way to think about how it works in principle. What common mistakes do you see in clients who think they are eating healthily? This one for me is quite simply when they obsess over the quantity of food and neglect the quality of food. I would love to see clients form an understanding of what food does in their body once they ingest it. Essentially food is information and every time we eat, we send our bodies mini commands to behave, function and look a certain way.

There is the total energy of food and there is the intelligence of food. Our bodies need a wide variety of amino acids, fatty acids, complex carbs, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals in order to support its peak function. This for me is what I would consider the intelligence of food, the actual effect anything we eat has on hormones, brain function, detoxification abilities, sleep quality, weight loss, energy. If we get this right by eating whole foods from a good origin, almost always the total amount of food will self regulate.

How much sleep do we need to obtain enough restorative downtime to achieve our body goals? I would say no less than 6.5 hours at an absolute minimum and of course eight hours is the sweet spot. It’s also important to focus on the quality of sleep, deep sleep, rem, light sleep. This is called a delta wave cycle and we want to get as many of those as we can in an evening. Can you tell us more about the first 14 day reset of your programme and how it supports the process of transformation? The 14 day reset was designed to form an immaculate foundation in order to build great habits and create significant initial results. It attempts to empower the client to understand their body and form a blueprint on what works for them. Again, each 14 day reset is always customised to meet the individual’s goals and aspirations. These are predominantly growth hormones, androgens, estrogens, thyroid and in some cases insulin. They each have their role in things like increasing metabolism, balancing blood sugar, helping build lean muscle, increasing performance output, and assisting recovery speed so you can train more. A body that is in hormonal harmony is very responsive and will likely produce effective results over a good timeline. With that said, diet, lifestyle modifications, training methods and natural supplements should be considered first before venturing into that space. How important is consistency and should we be having rest days? Consistency is king when it comes to getting results in general. In over 15 years of health coaching, I’ve begun to see how certain trends and patterns predictably produce results. Let’s say we design a certain programme for a client ie. nutrition, strength training, cardio and lifestyle strategies. As coaches we can generally predict the rate of change based off the chosen strategy.

So the higher the adherence is from the client, the more likely it is that the programme will work. And since we programme most things to match their expectations, it basically means that consistency is the currency to getting what you want. As for the rest days, absolutely. The body should always be worked out to a point where it reaches its peak performance but never experiences being overwhelmed. This way we work and recover at a ratio that allows the body to see progress but not at the cost of disfunction. What have been the most challenging or rewarding aspects to date and why? I would say time, I wish I could work with more people in a day. After 15 years of coaching,

I’m just as passionate as when I first started. Going through transformations with clients add a significant amount of joy in my life, so I guess finding more opportunities and ways to work with people has always been the challenge. With that said, the reward is witnessing what happens when clients transform into the human they had always wished to become. Having a role in that is simply priceless

Have you had any mentors and if so, what advice did they impart? I have had the privilege of studying with many great health educators, however there is one that stands out the most: Charles Poliquin. The advice he gave me was life changing on both a personal and career level. Professionally he taught me the technical details on how to master the art of a transformation. On the personal side, he taught me to focus on education, mastery, walking the walk and service to others. These things proved to be extremely valuable and still are to this day.

What advice would you give your younger self? The two biggest questions you should always have on the top of your mind are: What to do next? And with who? And for the answers, spend time in meditation/prayer and form a deep rooted relationship with yourself. This space will always produce the best answers for life’s hardest questions

How do you approach scaling in business without compromising on quality – what is next? This quite simply comes down to building solid systems and a framework that consistently produces results. Again, this should always be one that’s a client centred approach which considers: where the client is now, where they would like to go and what is the best strategy to take us there.

The systems’ core principles should make specific change happen, work with every or most clients and always be testing and changing things as we see progress. At the end of the day, it’s all about building something that works on a consistent basis whilst providing a constant core experience. If we could all repeat one affirmation to ourselves daily – what should that be? Ask: What would the height of possibility look like in my life if I allowed it? Be silent and let the answer come.

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine – and how non-negotiable are these practices?

The first 30 minutes of my day are typically silent. I immediately brush my teeth and wash my face upon waking, drink a tall glass of water, put on my slippers, and take in a deep breath of fresh air and rays of sunshine outdoors – in a garden or on a balcony, depending on what’s available that day. I then make myself a café americano which I drink while I sit in silence, or sometimes read the FT.

Can you define three things that a modern gentleman should uphold in terms of manners? 1. Gratitude, to be practiced personally but also to be expressed excessively. 2. Respect of others’ personal space. Stand at arm’s length, with your hands by your side or behind your back. 3. Do not over spray. Smell good, not strong. Let people smell you when they hug or embrace you, not when they walk 10 meters away from you. You have an entrepreneurial spirit – what is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken, and did it pay off? Starting my own beverage business, Palais Constance. So far so good.

How do you scale without compromising on quality? Focus on excellence, and the word of mouth will do the scaling for you. You’ve partnered with LPM in the region – what do you look for in a business partnership? Alignment of values.

LPM promotes togetherness, positivity, and a wholesome family spirit – all through an exceptional attention to detail and excellence in all categories of their business. That’s what I love.

What is at the core of your brand, the DNA it’s built on? Excellence, connoisseurship, and the beauty of understatement. The desire to be known by the few that share my values, rather than the desire to be known by all.

What brings clarity to your life both professionally and personally? Gratitude. Reflecting on all the things I’m blessed with brings me clarity and peace. What have been your biggest challenges to date and how did you overcome them? Surrounding myself with likeminded and value-aligned people. Don’t be afraid to throw those who aren’t à la poubelle.

What is the DNA of the brand based on? The DNA of our platform is based on driving superior outcomes for our members. We measure ourselves not by what we do (i.e. an array of clinical services, drugs prescribed, or testing done) but rather the outcome we ultimately deliver.

We launched GluCare.Health back in 2019, which together with Zone.Health, ultimately became the pillars of meta[bolic] with a very specific thesis – demonstrating that hybrid healthcare would be superior in every way when compared either to traditional care or digital health/virtual care on their own. This thesis gelled into a vision to build a continuous model of care that delivered superior outcomes by giving agency back to our patients – where we define agency as the ability to turn data into knowledge, into insight, into action, into measurable outcomes. What that meant in a practical sense was harnessing the full potential of all the continuous forms of data we’re already capable of producing, from wearables and connected devices, with a hyper-personalised physical footprint that served to translate data correlations into actionable insights for our patients. An engagement platform if you will, around best-inclass clinical care, powered by data driven insights.

At the time, there were innovative first-generation digital health companies already tackling metabolic health, but none were meaningfully managing the care provision to the patient or tackling inefficiencies and misaligned incentives at the grassroots level. We felt that was an important gap and set out to build a platform that would take the best of both worlds and deliver a care model that was both comprehensive and continuous. We were self-funded, and willing to take the risk on our bet that hybrid healthcare would ultimately earn the right to win. We deconstructed every aspect of the patient journey, both physical and virtual, and re-assembled it into something that was both seamless and magical for our patients, but also something that within the first year was delivering among the best outcomes in the world. The best published results over a 10-year period for ICLDC were a 0.9 per cent reduction in HbA1c, whereas GluCare delivered 2.1 per cent reduction in just three months – onefortieth the time – a hugely unprecedented improvement.

Why is accurate data so important when it comes to evaluating health? Accurate data is crucial for evaluating health because it provides a reliable foundation for understanding a patient’s health status and for making informed decisions. In the context of metabolic health, accurate data allows clinicians to monitor vital health metrics, understand individual patient patterns, and tailor care plans effectively. That said, people who have worn different wearables would have seen that there’s always variability around the readings, largely because the insights that wearables produce are not “hard truth” but rather an interpretation of an underlying optical signal. Wearables are ultimately translating an optical signal, based on the physics of light absorption in the body, into a “reading” of some kind – whether that reading is your blood oxygen level, your heart rate variability, or your core body temperature. There will always be a margin of error. What is as important as accuracy is precision, in other words that the readings are reliable and consistent, and that they can be correlated to other sources of data to generate more valuable insights for members. It enables the identification of correlations between lifestyle behaviors and health outcomes, which is essential for preventive health strategies and managing conditions such as diabetes and obesity. Our model is centered around insight evaluation and delivery of that insight into an action around behaviour. Precise data is crucial if we are to successfully deliver those actionable insights and ultimately change behaviour.

How does meta[bolic] utilise this data? meta[bolic] utilises data by integrating it into its clinical portal, where it aggregates clinical, subclinical, and behavioural data – including sleep, diet, daytime stress and activity metrics from wearables like the Oura Ring, continuous glucose monitors, and lab tests. This comprehensive view allows clinicians and patients to understand how behaviours impact health metrics. The insights derived from this data are used to create personalised care plans, drive patient engagement, and improve overall health outcomes.

What are the benefits to an Oura Ring wearer? The benefits to an Oura Ring wearer include the ability to track sleep, stress, and activity data continuously and in high fidelity. This data contributes to a deeper understanding of their health patterns and trends and is especially important in improving

metabolic health outcomes. Oura Ring’s advanced sleep and stress tracking technology enhances patient engagement and aids in behavioural change, which is instrumental in managing metabolic health. The wearer can also experience better clinical outcomes due to the personalised insights and care plans derived from the data collected by the ring. What three things should we be doing to improve our health and wellness at home? 1. How do you scale without compromising on quality? We think about brand and scale differently than other healthcare providers. Scale to us is not just about building another clinic or increasing access to our service to a wider population of people. Scale to us is the authentic replication of the outcome itself. If we are unable to stay true to our mission to deliver the world’s best outcomes, then we’re not scaling the right way. So a minimum standard of quality and authenticity is built into the growth plan from the outset. Any growth opportunity that puts the core outcome engine at risk is simply not considered.

This is one of the reasons we have built a fully vertically integrated offering for our patients. It allows us not only to control all the incentives and behaviours within our walls, but it also allows us to quickly identify pain points and iterate solutions and improvements. Our heavy use of data analytics allows us to monitor and manage health outcomes efficiently, maintaining a high level of patient engagement,

and ensure that the care team can provide personalised care. As we expand, we simply adapt the core outcome-oriented model to other regulatory and reimbursement environments across different markets.

What boundaries should we have around using technology at home so we can optimise our wellness? Boundaries around using technology at home for wellness should include mindful usage that supports health goals without causing stress or addiction. Technology should be used as a tool to enhance health, such as tracking wellness metrics and facilitating healthy habits, rather than distracting from them. It’s also important to have tech-free times to disconnect and engage in non-digital activities, ensuring a balanced lifestyle. Boundaries also should be considered around data privacy, especially in the context of health and wellness. Today, the data we’re producing with our myriad of devices all sit in different siloed clouds, disconnected from each other and each susceptible to breach and unauthorized use. As a regulated healthcare provider, a subtle service that we, by default, deliver to our members is the consolidation of this disparate data into a single secure repository of data governed by the stricter regulatory oversight that comes with patient medical data.

Which apps and tech can we implement at home that are game changers? Apps and tech that can be game changers at home include wearable devices like the Oura Ring for sleep and activity tracking, continuous glucose monitors for real-time blood sugar monitoring, and health management apps like GluCare.Health and Zone.Health that offer integrated care platforms and continuous connectivity to a multidisciplinary care team. These technologies provide actionable insights and support in managing metabolic health and wellness at home.

Can you define how the partnership between meta[bolic]’s parent companies of GluCare and Zone.Health and OURA, creators of the Oura Ring started? The genesis of the partnership between meta[bolic] and OURA was somewhat serendipitous. Our founders had met OURA’s chief scientist through a friend and colleague at Harvard Medical School about a year back and started a dialogue on the clinical research potential of teaming up scientifically. In parallel, one of the early investors in OURA connected us with Tom Hale, OURA’s CEO to discuss a more strategic partnership to help OURA enter the healthcare space. There was immediate alignment on mission and vision, and the partnership was cemented. The partnership began with the shared goal of enhancing patient engagement and improving clinical outcomes in metabolic health by leveraging the advanced sleep and stress tracking technology of Oura Ring. meta[bolic] was attracted to OURA due to the depth of integration offered by the OURA APIs, long battery life, the quality of its continuous data collection, and the high patient adherence facilitated by the ring form factor. The partnership aims to incorporate Oura Ring data into meta[bolic]’s care delivery model and conduct research on sleep and metabolic health, as well as the impact of patient engagement on clinical outcomes.
