VIRTUAL RELAXATION Virtual reality has arrived at DXB, and it means that you can now enjoy a vacation before your vacation

All of a sudden, a playful bottlenose dolphin glides past your left shoulder, and another one darts in from the right. In the space of 30 seconds, you’ve been joined by a pod of the playful mammals, as you turn your head left and right and attempt to follow them. The experience lasts several minutes, before everything turns black and you’re back to where you started in the middle of 14

For now, this means a 15-minute foot massage in a lounger, as you pop on the virtual reality headset to be transported to a new world. It’s all possible thanks to the Samsung virtual reality gear, which is all synced up to a Samsung smart phone. The wearer can turn their head from left to right, up and down, and follow all of the action unfolding in front of them.

There are currently four scenarios on rotation including dolphin swimming, an island holiday, and the desert. They’re also working on another video that will take you on an out-of-body tour of Dubai International. For the first month, customers can try on a headset at any of the Be Relax stores for free. After that, you won’t pay anything on top of your treatment to be transported to another world. It’s likely the most relaxing swim with marine life you’ll find anywhere in the GCC. ay the word Islay to a certain type of whisky drinker and you’ll likely get a fearful, winced expression in return. The southernmost island of Scotland’s Inner Hebrides has a legendary whiskymaking heritage, and much of that comes from its strong peaty aroma and taste that has divided single malt drinkers the world over. In recent years, however, there’s been a change; tentative steps to try something new, something edgy, something… peaty. But where do you start? If you’re used to a light and smooth Glenfiddich 12 but then jump straight in with a full-bodied and incredibly peaty, Laphroaigh 10, chances are you’ll never come back to the peaty side again. To ease into the market, Bowmore could well be the answer.

Finally the 18 has a rich finish using the rarely used Pedro Ximinez casks that add a final overlay of sublime sweetness on top of layers of sherry matured.” All of which means that, if you’re looking to push your tolerances and develop a taste for peaty whisky, then Bowmore’s GTR range could be the perfect entry point. “It’s superbly balanced,” adds Dundas. “It offers you touch of everything including puffs of peat smoke, sweetness, fruitiness and sometimes that sea salt tang. This mid-level smokiness stems from the peating of our barley in the first stages of production, and that smoky influence is retained into the whisky many years later, diminishing as time moves on.”

Tokyo and the droids Japan’s bustling capital has long been depicted as a futuristic metropolis that’s home to all things robotic. Here’s how to enjoy it in all its techie glory Word: Sean Williams

utside Japan, many people eye robots with a touch of suspicion. That’s no surprise. Popular culture has long fed citizens a diet of dim views on artificial intelligence – from The Terminator to I, Robot. Not so in Japan itself, where robots, AI and androids are a staple of everyday life. Karakuri puppets – brightly dressed mechanised automata – became popular in Japan as far back as the 17th century, while Gakutensoku was the country’s first full robot, created in Osaka in 1928. Japan continues to lead the robotics industry with models intended to look realistic, replace workers or even to cure loneliness. 26

Japan’s robotics industry is one of five worldwide representing 75 per cent of the global market, the others being China, South Korea, the US and Germany. In 2015 robotics sales in Japan increased by 20 per cent to around 35,000 units and in Tokyo you’ll find robots doing everything from throwing baseball pitches to pressing clothes. Japan’s vast capital city has long been robotics’ ground zero. Its 37.8 million inhabitants (the Tokyo-Yokohama metropolitan area is the world’s largest) rely on robots for everything from travel to choosing dinner. And beneath the city’s neon-soaked skyline, there are plenty of

ways to encounter robots in a single day. First, make a beeline for the Henn-na Hotel, near the Tokyo Disney Resort in Urayasu. Its name is a play on a Japanese word meaning ‘strange’. It’s a title it lives up to. The hotel is almost entirely staffed by robots: Porter and front desk duties, window cleaning, vacuuming and other tasks are carried out by machines shaped like, among other things, eggs, dinosaurs, cars and humans. It is parent company H.I.S.’ second such hotel, following a similar one in Sasebo, Nagasaki that, in 2015, was recognised by the Guinness World Records as the world’s first ‘robo-staffed’ resort.

From the Henn-na Hotel, take a ride across Tokyo Bay on the New Transit Yurikamome. It is a 1995-built autonomous railway system that has neither drivers nor human controllers. Since 2006 each station on the Yurikamome Line has used the voices of famous Japanese voice actors and actresses. Hop off at Telecom Center Station, on manmade Odaiba island. From there it’s a short walk to the Miraikan National Museum of Emerging Science, which has a wide variety of high-tech shows and activities. Its exhibitions include Robot World, featuring a range of androids such as ASIMO (‘Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility’), a 2000-built Honda robot that’s probably Japan’s most recognisable. Miraikan also showcases an exhibition entitled Android: What Is Human?, where visitors are urged to “ponder a future with androids and the meaning of human existence while interacting with the world’s most advanced androids”.

Tokyo is full of other great technology museums. They include the Toshiba Science Museum, the Sony Explorascience Museum and the Panasonic Center, which features new technology and a hands-on Nintendo Game Front, where visitors can try out the game-maker’s latest creations. Right outside the museum, at the entrance to DiverCity Mall, stands a 59-foot, 1/1 scale model of Gundam, one of Japan’s most famous anime cartoon characters. Created in 1979 the giant, winged warrior has become an icon of Japanese futurism. It offers projection shows depicting famous battles each evening between 7.30 and 9.30pm – and is piloted by the show’s protagonist Amuro Ray. There has been recent talk of Gundam being removed from the site: so catch it while you can. From there it’s time to head into central Tokyo. Grab an underground train to Shimbashi Station – itself a warren of Blade Runner noir bars and yakitori (skewered chicken) shops – to ,

the Mitsukoshi department store in neighbouring Nihonbashi. There you’ll be greeted by ChihiraAico, an android built by Toshiba and modelled on a 32-year-old human woman. ChihiraAico moves, talks and expresses herself strikingly similarly to a real person – which is why, in nations where robots are viewed with scepticism, she has fallen foul of what scientists call the ‘Uncanny Valley’, a phenomenon coined in 1970 by professor Masahiro Mori to describe when a realistic robot elicits a negative reaction. If you’re peckish by now, stop at Sushiro, a popular sushi and ramen chain that has over a dozen locations in the city. Diners pick their meal from a conveyor belt using a special-made interactive screen rather than wait staff. But to see Japan’s robophilia played out in full, maniacal glory finish your day at the Shinjuku Robot Restaurant where, each night, women stage mock battles via massive robots in the image of pandas, dinosaurs and more. Fans of Gaspar Noé’s cult movie Enter The Void will recognise the restaurant’s migraine-inducing neon-and-mirrors experience. It’s not for everybody. But the Robot Restaurant is a great way to sample the best, worst and maddest of Tokyo’s high-tech obsession with robots at once. Huge prize fund for the Irish Open

The 2017 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open is set to be the biggest in the tournament’s history – with a prize fund of US$7 million, more than doubling the kitty of last year’s event. Patrick Morrow wins 24th Dubai Duty Free Golf Cup A strong field turned out to compete in the 24th Dubai Duty Free Golf Cup on June 10. Held at Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club, the popular annual event is an individual stableford format played from the white tees, with golfers competing for the illustrious trophy. Last year’s Dubai Creek Club Captain, Patrick Morrow, produced an exceptional round of golf in humid conditions to claim the title. A superb 44 stableford points saw Patrick win by four shots. In the men’s division, Paul Khoo claimed victory after a superb round culminating in 40 stableford points. Responding to the call from the United Nations Environment Programme, Dubai Duty Free joined the world in celebrating the World Environment Day on June 5, launching two significant environmental initiatives with a longterm focus. A new Kids Enviro Club (KEC) is open to children of Dubai Duty Free employees’ aged between 6 and 12 years old. It has a mission to increase eco-consciousness and develop a strong sense of leadership and social responsibility when it comes to taking care of the environment.

Various programmes and activities will also be organised for the children as part of the club. The second initiative was a call for entries for the Dubai Duty Free Environmental Tagline Competition, which aims to find the best catchphrase to articulate Dubai Duty Free’s approach to environmental protection. The winning entry will be announced at the Clean Up the World campaign in September, and will be used as the official Dubai Duty Free environmental tagline to further promote its commitment to the cause.

country as rooted in tradition as it is in the advancements of the future, Japan seems to balance the most symbiotic of relationships between past and present better than most. Whether it’s being at the forefront of pop culture, as a car manufacturing superpower, or simply in forward-thinking everyday tech, there seems no industry left untouched Japan’s thirst for progression. But while your head’s been turned by robot waiters, you might be susrprised to know that the country is making great strides in the beauty industry, too. Beauty has always been central to life in Japan. In the time of the geisha, natural

looks were shunned in favour of glowing white skin, lacquered wigs, and slivers of red-stained lips. There’s was a beauty regime that would last several hours in morning only to be repeated in reverse last thing at night. Generations did little to change the perception of beauty for Japanese women. A more Western look was yearned for, meaning whitening creams lined the shelves, photo sticker booths were designed to make eyes seem wider, and blonde hair became all the rage. It’s only in recent years that the pendulum swung the other way. Japan now boasts one of the highest per capita spending on skincare and beauty products, and some of the highest

sales figures in the world. Asia-led trends, like eye-firming snail cream (a product comprised of snail mucus), have paved the way for Japanese beauty powerhouses to stamp their mark not only in the East, but in the West as well. The most recent of these, is the much-lauded SK-II line, which was very much an Asia-held secret until several years ago when it exploded onto the international scene. The secret weapon in its arsenal, and the story of its discovery, seems to be what has endeared the brand to thousands the world over – though you’ve probably never heard of it. Pitera, SK-II’s much touted “miracle ingredient”, is a naturally occurring liquid

produced through yeast fermentation. It contains more than 50 micronutrients, including amino acids, minerals, vitamins and polysaccharides. But while its tech specs are interesting, the story of how it came to be is even more so. As the story goes, early SK-II scientists embarked on their quest to find the elixir of skin purification in the 1970s. From Chinese herbs to hot spring water, they searched in vain, as the ingredient they sought eluded them for years. Finally, scientists chanced upon a group of saké brewers and noticed their soft and youthful hands, which seemed to contradict their deeply lined and ageweathered faces. Racing back to their labs, the scientists set about conducting tests on the saké fermentation process, theorising the ingredient they’d been searching for must lie in the yeast that brewers’ hands were in constant contact with. Over 350 yeast strains and a decade worth of testing later, they finally managed to isolate a single yeast strain that seemed to hold the secret to clear, pure skin. And, thus, SK-II was born. Originally focused on the Japanese market, SK-II grew as word spread about its groundbreaking studies on yeast, along with claims that it could make skin appear younger, with visible improvements in just one month of use. Research has shown that Pitera increases the production of hyaluronic acid, which replenishes moisture in the skin and helps it maintain its suppleness, as well as producing proteins important in cell junctions and boosting the barrier function of the skin. The idea is that the serum mirrors the skin’s natural moisturising agents, an important factor in the restoration and enhancement of translucency, softness and smoothness. Today, the burgeoning skincare empire can be found in East Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. Actress Cate Blanchett is one of the brand ambassadors, and it’s stocked everywhere from Sephora to Nordstrom.
