The deTermined ones Mawaheb is a unique Dubai-based art studio that’s helping change perceptions while inspiring millions of passengers at DXB Words: Oliver Ephgrave Images: David Kirkland

ehind the doors of a beautiful, century-old villa in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is an art studio like no other in the region. Mawaheb, meaning ‘talent’ in Arabic, is a creative and nurturing haven for adults with special needs. Set up by Dutch national Wemmy De Maaker in 2010, Mawaheb’s current crop of 27 students range from 18 to 60 years old and originate from 14 different countries. On May 24, Dubai Airports celebrated the launch of artDXB, a platform for artists to showcase their work in Dubai International while inspiring and entertaining the millions of passengers 6

passing through the airport. Mawaheb partnered with Dubai Airports for the launch, providing a number of artworks by its students, including 24-year-old Emirati artist Abdullah Lutfi. At the time of visiting, Lutfi was putting the finishing touches to a special commission for artDXB – a huge cartoon-style drawing of life inside the airport (above). Armed with a thick black pen and a mischievous sense of humour, he draws at an incredible speed, purely from memory. “I always draw the head before the body,” says Lufti, before creating a kimono-clad Japanese woman in a matter of seconds. “Japan is one of my favourite countries to visit – the sushi is awesome.”

Brimming with pulsating energy, Lutfi’s drawing showcases plenty of raw fish – with a detailed depiction of the YO! Sushi conveyor belt in D-Gates – as well as DXB’s music stage, health club and swimming pool, all being enjoyed by travellers from around the globe. “Drawing this makes me want to travel,” adds the artist. “I love sitting in a plane and seeing the world outside.” Another of Mawaheb’s featured works for artDXB is a colourful series called Squiggly Wiggly, which has been printed onto boards and used as construction hoarding. De Maaker describes the collaborative creative process behind Mawaheb’s now signature concept. “Sometimes 20 people are working

on this artwork at the same time. It all starts with painting abstracts on the canvas, then we all move around the canvas. We’re singing, dancing and having fun. When the background is done, we bring out the ‘squiggly’ – a fabric paint that adds texture. You can feel the energy.” As well as delighting millions of passengers passing through DXB, the partnership between Dubai Airports and Mawaheb is also about spreading awareness about individuals with special needs. This builds on the recent announcement from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, that people with special needs should now be known as ‘the determined ones’. The change in terminology is a positive step, according to De Maaker. “I love the fact that it is a positive expression and I absolutely embrace the new terminology. I think we have to bring a lot of awareness about it while still explaining what we mean by ‘the determined ones’. “People usually think of Down syndrome and autism, but there are so many more syndromes and disabilities such as Kabuki syndrome and muscular dystrophy. No matter what terminology we use, we still have to improve awareness.” This lack of awareness – as well as support networks for adults – sparked De Maaker into action. “When I arrived in Dubai in 2002, I worked as a volunteer and learned we have beautiful schools for children with special needs. It was then that I knew we had to do something for adults. Every cell in my body knew what the idea was about. Art is a common language across all cultures.” She highlights there was a big gap between the idea and the opening of Mawaheb in 2010. “I did an awareness programme to find out if there was a need, and there was, but people were a sceptical of the concept as it is outside of the box. I reached out to HRH Princess Haya [Bint Al Hussein]. After a few meetings, her office called and said they have a villa to rent in Al Fahidi. It was like a dream. “We started with four students and went from strength to strength. After four years, the villa became too small – we wanted to

take on more students and it was really difficult to handle – we had to either close or grow. Luckily, this villa had been empty for some time and I managed to convince the management of the neighbourhood that we should take it on.” With its shaded palm tree-filled courtyard, historic architectural details and solid sandcoloured walls adorned with beautiful artwork, Mawaheb is a wonderful and inspiring location to visit. The palpably positive atmosphere is infectious, especially when greeted with a warm smile and handshake from the students. This is all part of the Mawaheb ethos, as De Maaker explains. “It’s not only about the art – we teach them so many other things such as social and communication skills. If the student is working, they have to approach the visitors and introduce themselves and Mawaheb. If

they are able to handle money, they can help out in the gift shop. When Abdullah [Lutfi] first came here, I did not know he was really good at maths as well as art. He now handles the cash machine on his own – he loves it. Whenever they pick up the paintbrush, they are shaping themselves.” Certainly the support network has helped Mawaheb student Nazeer Ali build up much needed confidence. Ali and Lutfi collaborated on the Falcon Sculpture, one of Mawaheb’s exhibits for the launch of artDXB. “Mawaheb has changed me,” says the 23-year-old Canadian national. “Before I wasn’t independent, but now I use the metro every day and take driving lessons. It’s given me a lot of courage, and I’m confident in travelling to other countries. “There’s so much happiness and love here that it makes you forget your stress.”

The arT oF CoFFee The man at DXB who can turn your cuppa into a work of art

hile Luciano Santiago has been working at Costa for a decade, his latte art hobby began just two years ago, when a manager challenged him to draw a portrait in coffee. He promptly did, and has been something of a Costa celebrity ever since, inscribing caricatures, animals, famous scenes and self-portraits into the foam at events. Now, as this is our Art Issue, we felt it only right to set down a challenge of our own for Santiago. Could he draw the most famous portrait of all-time in the foam, none other than Leonardo da Vinciâ€™s Mona Lisa?

As you can see from our pictures, he managed a version of the worldâ€™s most talked about painting in some style, completing it in around three minutes and using cold milk underneath the foam to ensure the portrait lasted longer. The only problem is that it feels almost sinful to drink such a work of art. We did the sensible thing, and mulled it over with the help of a fresh almond croissant, and nutritious bircher muesli. Venice Biennale boasts the most beautiful location along with a fair that runs until November

hile the granddaddy of the art world is, unsurprisingly, one of the oldest festivals on the circuit, it’s also one of the most rewarding to visit; whether you’re an art expert or just have a passing interest. Of course, being in Venice helps and although the city’s undoubtedly a tourist trap, away from the hubbub of San Marco Square lies the Giardini, a true oasis within La Serenissima the home to the Venice Biennale. These cool, clean public gardens also offer breathtaking views over to Lido – the 11km sandbar that’s home to 20,000 Venetians and the annual Venice Film Festival. But it’s not just the views and artwork that you have to see. The national pavilions that host each country’s work are stunning in their own right, with each country represented in a singular style. The concrete of the Venezuelan

pavilion contrasts with the tiles and topiary of the Hungarian, while the modern Australian pavilion and the older Russian one are thrilling counterparts. In recent years, the event has become so popular that it’s outgrown the Giardini location, meaning more locations around the city hosting art. Many now opt to show at the Arsenale venue. These former naval construction warehouses are some of the biggest buildings in Venice and are perfect homes for larger works of art, complete with that evocative post-industrial setting. However, even the Arsenale is now full, leaving some countries to find their own venues in other parts of town. It all makes for an exciting art hunt around the city. As for this year, the American Mark Bradford has received plaudits for his work, and so has New Zealand’s Lisa Reihana, while Geta Bratescu of Romania and the UAE pavilion’s Lantian Xie and Sara Al Haddad are also definitely worth a look. Having hosted exhibitions by Klimt, Picasso, Renoir, Braque, Rauschenberg and many other 20th and 21st Century giants, the Venice Biennale has always been viewed as a springboard to great things. So here, more than any other festival, keep your eyes peeled as you wander. Documenta lands in Kassel just once every five years, making it one of the most talked about on the circuit

residing gracefully over Friedrichsplatz, the main square in the pretty German spa town of Kassel, you’ll find one of the most talked about art works of 2017 – and it takes pride of place at one of the year’s most anticipated art festivals. The brainchild of Argentine artist Marta Minujin, The Parthenon of Books is a metal-framed copy of Athens’ most famous

structure that’s covered with thousands of books donated by the public. What was first produced in 1983 as a riposte to government censorship of literature, is a fitting tribute to this year’s Documenta, as 2017 features the debut of a sister event in Athens. Why the fuss? Well, unlike many other events on the art calendar, this one only comes around every five years – so if you miss this one you’ll have to wait until 2022 for the next opportunity. Documenta began in the turbulent times following the Second World War, and was formed in a deliberate attempt to break with the country’s wartime past while making up for the German government’s attempt to brand contemporary art as ‘debased’. Over the course of 52 years, the exhibition has become woven into the social fabric of the town found close to Hanover. Kassel is now affectionately known as ‘Documentastadt’ or Documenta City. It has even bought some of the artworks from previous years, which now sit dotted around the city’s parks and pavements as permanent reminders of the world’s best art coming to town. Its other claim to fame, incidentally, is as the home of children’s fairy tale merchants the Brothers Grimm, and there’s even a new museum in their honour. Curator Adam Szymczyk’s plan for 2017 is for as many of the artists as possible to exhibit in both Kassel and Athens, and that has largely been realised – along with a huge upswell in interest in contemporary art in the Greek capital. Miriam Cahn, Anna Halprin, the iQhiya Collective, Olu Oguibe and Zef Shoshi are some of the artists at Documenta’s 14th edition who have been generating the most interest, but really it’s about discovering things you’ve never seen before and learning about places, people, styles and subjects that are completely new to you. Art Basel is one of the biggest art fairs in the world, where the most amazing pieces meet the biggest collectors

ay what you like about Art Basel, it certainly has the swagger to match its success. High-profile events, hedonistic parties and, at the centre of it all, some of the best art in the world. In terms of big money in 2017, keep an eye out for Tornabuoni Gallery exhibiting the Argentinian-Italian artist Lucio Fontana’s giant egg works. It’s been a huge hit with collectors around the world, and the four pieces on display at Basel will be going for around US$30 million each. And there’ll be plenty of punters around willing to shell out those prices, too. Because Basel isn’t just about displaying art, it’s about selling it as well. In 47 years, this event has made its Swiss hometown not only synonymous with the art world, but also the art of partying. As surprising as it may sound, the parties here are often as anticipated as the works on display, meaning the four-day event attracts celebrities, millionaire art collectors and lots of column inches. off events in Hong Kong (March 29 to 31) and Miami Beach (December 7 to 10) only add to the glamour. In 2017, there’ll be 291 galleries from 34 countries – which translates to a whopping 4,000 artists having work on show. With so much to see, where do you even start? We’d recommend avoiding the ‘art supermarket’ aspect and head to the Unlimited section instead, with 16,000 square metres of exhibition space allocated to some of the biggest artworks. Curated by Gianni Jetzer – from the acclaimed Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC – Unlimited packs a real punch. Some artists to look for in its cavernous halls include Subodh Gupta, whose new work Cooking

The World I features food being cooked inside a giant shelter, and Sue Williamson’s Messages From The Atlantic Passage, which sees fishing nets suspended from the ceiling filled with glass bottles that explore the history of slavery. While four days will undoubtedly prove insufficient to view everything on show here, this one is all about the experience. This collection of works on Egyptian modern art examines topics from activism to traditions and multiculturalism between the 1950s and ’70s in Egypt. The collection reiterates what female Egyptian artists witnessed and lived through, offering a glimpse into the “golden period” of the century.

In March, New York-based Samia Halaby presented two of her latest projects side-by-side, one of which, Documentary Drawings of the Kafr Qasem Massacre, took 10 years of research and interviews to produce. The other, Illuminated Space, is a colourful collection of abstract experiments examining the “space of light”. The works took two years to collate, and reflect her interest in shapes inspired by living organisms.

AlMost HoMe Iranian-American immigrant Amir H Fallah knows what it’s like to be uprooted from a homeland and to try and make a new home elsewhere, and his new body of work delves deep into his own history. Dubai World Central welcomes first Himalaya Airlines flight Dubai World Central (DWC) welcomed Himalaya Airlines’ inaugural flight from the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu in late April. The airline will operate three weekly flights from Tribhuvan International Airport to DWC, offering eight business class and 150 economy class seats on its Airbus A320-214 aircraft. Himalaya Airlines’ arrival at DWC increases the number of passenger carriers serving the airport to 19, and the average number of weekly flights to 106.

New tech reduces wait times at DXB Passenger wait times at Dubai International (DXB) have dropped by as much as 10 per cent during the first quarter of 2017, thanks to a host of new technologies. Recent results show that in the first three months of 2017, 84 per cent of transfer passengers were processed within five minutes, 68 per cent of arrival passengers were processed within 15 minutes, and 87 per cent of departing passengers within 10 minutes. The first technology driving down transaction times and queues at immigration is Smart Gates, a new service allowing passengers to use Emirates ID cards to pass through automated immigration gates at DXB. Launched last year by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigner Affairs, Emirates Identity Authority and Dubai Airports, the system can quickly, accurately and efficiently confirm the identity, travel plans and eligibility of UAE residents to enter and depart the country. Since its introduction, more than 1.3 million UAE residents have taken advantage of the service. Another piece of tech behind shorter wait times is a sophisticated motion sensor system 34

that allows the airport to track queues in real time. A series of 530 sensors have been installed at crucial passenger processing areas in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. The sensors track the movement of people, collecting and computing valuable data such as passenger wait times and queue lengths, and based on those factors, calculates the level of service. Data is shared via a simple mobile application used by more than 5,000 operational staff across Dubai Airports, airlines and control authorities working at the airport. The mobile application alerts all teams in real time and allows Dubai Airports operational staff to quickly identify bottlenecks and deploy resources to address them. It will be implemented in Terminal 2 this year.

“This automated system provides us with more timely and accurate data far quickly than the manual system that was used previously,” said Frank McCrorie, Dubai Airports’ senior vice president of operations at DXB. The access to historical, day-to-day, month-on-month data also means Dubai Airports’ planning teams can identify trends and predict problems before they occur. The analysis has enhanced collaborative decision making between stakeholders and boosted service levels. Both technologies support Dubai Airports’ DXB Plus programme, designed to improve service while increasing capacity to 118 million passengers at DXB by 2018.

Best airlines celebrated at inaugural award ceremony

Dubai Airports has held its first Airline Excellence Awards to recognise outstanding customer service, on-time performance and partnership at both Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC). Airlines were nominated in categories around on-time performance, partnership, engagement and customer service, centred around achievements throughout 2016.

Qatar Airways won three awards for engagement, on-time performance (more than 2,000 flights per year category) and on-time performance (DWC). Air France also won an on-time performance award (in the 200 to 1,999 flights per year category). The customer service award went to Emirates, while Air France-KLM won the award for

partnership. Finally, Yonas Gebre of Ethiopian Airlines won the Airline Employee of the Year award. The ceremony, held on May 3 at the InterContinental Hotel in Dubai Festival City, was attended by Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths and CEO of the Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, Issam Kazim.

One of Europe’s biggest races – offering €1.5 million in prize money – returns to the famed Curragh Racecourse in Ireland. f you’re travelling somewhere beachworthy this month, then chances are that you’ve packed a kaftan (well, the women at least). But while it’s a perennial favourite for summer holidays and festivals, it’s also an item that had recently lost some of its sparkle in the style stakes. At least until now. Part of a resurgence centred on modest fashion, the humble kaftan is an example of how less isn’t always more – a mantra championed by millions of style savvy women around the world. It’s a feeling that’s finally being reflected on the catwalks, on the high street, and online, too. In March 2017, Dubai and London based luxury e-commerce website themodist. com made a real signal of intent when it launched, providing perhaps the first genuinely stylish online retail destination for modest fashion. Soon after, online retail site Net-a-Porter launched a collaboration with Kuwaiti blogger Ascia Al Faraj on modest dressing, sharing her top looks for Ramadan with her with two million Instagram followers. Of course, dressing stylishly during Ramadan has been on designers’ radars for a number of years now. In 2014, DKNY paved the way for high-end modest fashion when they launched their first Ramadan collection, full of summer staples with a conservative (but still fashion forward) twist – think bright maxi dresses, lots of long sleeves, prints and ankle-length hems. Unsurprisingly, other fashion powerhouses followed suit; recent years have seen Mango, Marks & Spencer, Tommy Hilfiger, and Monsoon all launch collections for Ramadan. It’s not surprising when you consider that the Arabic market is worth an estimated US$230 billion per year (according to the 2015/ 2016 Global Islamic Economy Report) and is one that is expected to grow to US$327 billion by 2020. But it’s not all floor-sweeping skirts and figure-swallowing tunics. Modest fashion has also borne witness to the rebirth of the kaftan. OK, so maybe we can’t quite credit the movement with the return of the most comfortable piece of clothing ever worn, but it’s certainly an item worth highlighting.

Sultans of the Ottoman Empire once wore silk kaftans, and the garment’s grandiose existence actually dates back to 600 BC Persia. It was introduced to the West in the late 1800s in Russia when Alix of Hesse wore one during her coronation, and it slowly gained in popularity – due in part to how much it contradicted the form fitting, corseted fashion of the time. Fast-forward through inclusions by French fashion houses, an affinity with the idea of exoticism of the Middle East, and a move towards loose-fitting drop-waisted dresses in the 1920s, and the kaftan found its foothold. In the 1950s, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent and Balenciaga put the garment on every fashionista’s radar as a loose evening gown or robe, and pop culture solidified it when the likes of Twiggy and Elizabeth Taylor made them a wardrobe staple. Vogue described it as “the one item every woman should own”, but even men were getting in on the act, and in 1967 The Beatles returned from India swathed in fabric. These days, the most popular place for the floaty dress is around a beach or music festival, but you’ll now find them in many a wardrobe, after they featured prominently on the SS/17 catwalks. Capturing the brand’s relaxed glamour, the collection includes four kaftans in different styles, including leaf-prints and embellished floral designs.
