The latest edition of Macallan Masters of Photography series whisky features one of Hollywood’s most renowned photographers – as well as a classic peaty finish He’s photographed Kate Moss and Rihanna, shot a music video for Kanye, collaborated with Madonna, and shot ads for Lady Gaga; and now Steven Klein has lent his expertise to the Macallan Masters of Photography franchise. ublin is a city of stories, of dreamers and poets, and despite the recent economic upheaval, it’s still got its sense of humour, something crucial to life in the Irish capital. For a relatively small city, Dublin has a lot to offer. Long the cultural and economic centre of Ireland, recent years have seen a whole host of independent cafes, boutiques and arts centres open their doors. This is a city that knows how to have a good time and the locals are almost always friendly and welcoming to visitors. Compared to other major cities, the prices are reasonable, and for a long weekend, there are few better destinations in Europe.

Start off in Temple Bar, a cobblestone district slap bang in the centre of the city, just south of the Liffey River, which divides Dublin in two. The area was once an eyesore, lined with derelict buildings and car parks, but now it’s the city’s cultural hub, with galleries, theatres, cinemas, event spaces and independent shops. This is a shopper’s paradise with everything from ‘pre-loved’ designer bags and clothes (Siopaella) to beautiful menswear (Indigo & Cloth) on sale. Culture lovers should check out one of the theatres, or the IFI, an independent cinema that features a range of cutting-edge films and documentaries. For kids, The Ark is a must-see, a purposebuilt cultural centre filled with exhibitions,
games and interactive displays. While many of the pubs in the area are overpriced tourist traps, one exception is the Victorian Cocktail Kitchen, a quirky three-floor venue with a rooftop bar. The cocktails here are top notch. For something more traditional, Dublin has a few pubs where the barmen are old, the Guinness is wonderful and the ambience is relaxed. Some of the best are Grogan’s on South William Street, Toner’s on Baggot Street and The Long Hall on South Great George’s Street. Bring a book and while away an hour or two, or drop by for a quick pint before a night out. Ten minutes walk south of Temple Bar is St Stephen’s Green, a 22-acre city park,

which is an oasis of ponds and greenery at the edge of the city’s Georgian district. Across the street from the park lies the Little Museum of Dublin, a charming threestorey converted townhouse that’s filled with memorabilia of Dublin history and a permanent U2 exhibition. This is a foodie paradise with some world-class restaurants, reasonable prices and lots of choice. If you fancy high-end dining, eat early – the pre-theatre menus are wonderful value, and you can eat a three-course meal at somewhere like The Winding Stair for under Dhs120. If you fancy something more casual, check out Bunsen, which does the best burgers in town. Their menu fits on a business card (they just do burgers), but they really are something else. One of the city’s highlights is its coastline. The DART train service is quick and reliable and brings you north and south of the city. Howth, 15km north of the city centre, offers spectacular cliff walks and some of the best fish restaurants in the country. The Bloody Stream pub, located right by the DART station, is perfect for a post-walk pint, and 28

even has a roaring fire during the colder months. Further south lies Killiney, Dublin’s most salubrious suburb (Bono lives here), and it also offers some wonderful walks with amazing views of Dublin Bay. Killiney village is charming with an array of cafes and restaurants. Get off at the Killiney station and walk north up Vico Road towards Dalkey. Hawk Cliff is a great spot for photo opportunities, and you can also see the baths down towards the sea where hardy swimmers take a dip. Back in town, the centre of the city is dominated by Trinity College, Ireland’s answer to Cambridge. It plays host to the Book of Kells, an art gallery and the fascinating Trinity College Zoological Museum, filled with curios from centuries past. A few minutes’ walk east and you’ll reach Merrion Square, which is surrounded by beautiful Georgian townhouses and is home to a suitably laconic Oscar Wilde statue. A two-minute walk south to Fitzwilliam Street is the Georgian House Museum, which provides a snapshot into life in Georgian Dublin. Across the Liffey, the north side of the
city has historically been a bit neglected, but recent years have seen a resurgence in certain neighbourhoods. Stoneybatter is one such place, filled with cafes and pubs, and a vibrant local community. It’s easily reachable on the LUAS, a tram service that serves the north side of the Liffey before veering south towards Tallaght. Just beside Stoneybatter is the National Museum of Ireland, a fascinating look at the country’s fashion, design and military history. Set in a former military barracks, it’s a good place to spend an afternoon. Once the sun sets (early at this time of year), the revellers come out in force – the centre of the city is packed, particularly at the weekend, and you can’t walk a few seconds without passing a pub. South Great George’s Street has plenty of food and drink options, as does Temple Bar and Baggot Street. What: Art Dubai Where: Madinat Jumeirah When: March 15 to 18 The Middle East and South Asia’s biggest contemporary art gathering may have saved its strongest line-up yet for 2017. Art Dubai will feature more than 90 galleries from 44 countries, and an endless number of reasons to embrace the art world. The biggest and most exciting part of the exhibition is the contemporary halls, where you’ll find the most recent works. This year will feature 93 art galleries over two halls, from as far afield as the US, the UK and South America. London’s Victoria Miro gallery will be there, as will Marianne Boesky Gallery from New York and Carlier | Gebauer from Berlin. There’s also a strong selection of homegrown talent from the Middle East, with 12 galleries participating from the UAE and a strong representation from Alserkal Avenue. Only in its fourth year, the Modern section is a smaller collection, featuring 15 galleries from 12 countries, and showcasing art from the mid-20th century. Most of the pieces here are from leading modernists from the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. Art Dubai isn’t just about eyeing-up the works on display, however. You can get involved, too, thanks to curators’ residences, workshops and the Global Art Forum. The latter is recognised as the largest talks programme in the Middle East and Asia and is a fair-long programme of talks and panel discussions. This year’s theme is ‘Trading Places’. As usual, the programme also features the unveiling of the US$100,000 Abraaj Group Art Prize, awarded to Bangladesh artist Rana Begum, and three shortlisted artists from Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Iran. China is a fast-growing market for Dubai Airports, with 2.86 million passengers making their way through the region. Six airlines (Air China, Cathay Pacific, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Sichuan Airlines
and Emirates) serve 10 destinations (Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Kunming, Shanghai, Urumqi, Wuhan, Yinchuan) with 14 daily flights. In 2016, four new services were launched from DXB including Air China’s service to Chongqing, China Southern Airlines’ flight to Wuhan, Emirates’ flight to Yinchuan and Sichuan Airlines’ service to Chengdu. Strong
trade and commerce ties, along with Dubai’s attractiveness as a tourism destination, are anticipated to contribute to continued robust growth between the two markets. “Our goal is to engage and delight our customers with culture and entertainment that reflects and celebrates that diversity,” Helen Mellor-Mitchell, Vice President of Media and Brand Engagement, said.
#musicDXB continues to surprise passengers
Whether they were passing by en route to another destination, or heading straight out of Dubai, passengers in DXB on February 8 got a unique welcome to the UAE, thanks to live blues and classic rock from locally-based five-piece, Code Blue. Formed in 2016 in Dubai, Code Blue perform guitar-based covers inspired by the
classic rock of the 1960s and ’70s, as well as Chicago-style blues. The show was the latest in Dubai Airports’ #musicDXB concert series. Since November 2015, it has created the world’s largest stage, in which millions of global travellers are entertained through the universal language of music. Last month, it was X Factor Arabia
winner Hamza Hawsawi and the cast of Cats serenading crowds. The project offers a platform to regional and international stars, as well as emerging artists, both physically, via live performances in the airport, and virtually, via Dubai International’s social media channels, with a reach of nearly two million people. Airport seating of the future With the amount of time we sit beside a boarding gate, awaiting our next adventure, it’s pretty important we’re comfortable. But Dubai Airport wants to make a seat that’s more than just comfortable. DXB has teamed up with Dubai-based design agency Ochre, and Emirati designer Aljoud Lootah, to design and test new airport seating. If successful the furniture would be rolled out at Dubai International (DXB), as well as in the airport of the future at Dubai World Central (DWC), which is destined to become the world’s biggest and best airport. “We’re always looking for ways to innovate and improve the passenger experience,” said Gideon Ruig, Dubai Airports Head of Customer Experience. The public had also been invited to have their say on the seating changes, with a demonstration area set up in Terminal 3, where passengers can have a seat and let staff know what they think. Common seating necessities like
resting, leaning and working, as well as arrangements that can cater to groups or families who want to sit comfortably together, will all be taken into account when it comes to the process. But it’s not just about the seats either. “As part of these experiential experiments we are also striving to weave a better ‘sense of place’ within the airport to showcase Dubai’s culture to passengers. As such our design was inspired by authentic Emirati design influences,” Ruig said. This is where Aljoud Lootah comes in. In 2015 Lootah created her iconic installations, featuring octagonal frames and arabesque patterns that depict the shape of Yaroof fishing nets. The installations were accompanied by short stories and vignettes, and showcased at Dubai Design Week. Customer feedback will be monitored in the weeks ahead, which will then be taken into consideration when final designs are developed.
Man proposes in DXB on Valentine’s Day As Love Actually taught us in its iconic opening and closing scenes, the airport can occasionally be a romantic place. Whether you’re reuniting with your other half, wishing them safe travels, or accidentally caught in the middle of someone else’s embrace, love is often the order of the day across the terminals. But one couple took it to a whole new level on Valentine’s Day. Dubai resident Luke Kettlewell wanted

to pop the question to his partner, Sarah, to signify a new journey they were embarking on in their lives. And what better place to do it than Dubai International Airport? Sarah was instructed to meet Luke at the airport in a hidden letter, where the couple checked in for an Air France flight. Just before boarding, staff from Marhaba Services popped out to surround the unwitting Sarah, and her future fiancé,
arranged in a makeshift love heart. As he uttered those four ultimate words, “Will you marry me?” they were showered in rose petals and cheered by a happy crowd. The giddy Sarah was then handed a huge bouquet of roses, before the newly-engaged couple headed for the Sky Lounge and were treated with Business Class tickets to Paris. Dubai Duty Free launches cycling group on Car Free Day Dubai Duty Free, along with more than 1,500 other private and public entities, took part in Dubai’s annual ‘Car Free Day’ last month. The programme, held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, aims to reduce carbon emissions and environmental pollution while raising awareness of sustainable practices. Marking its eighth year under the theme ‘Not A Day… Every Day’, all of Dubai Duty Free’s management and staff were encouraged to leave their cars at home for the day. Some staff used the company bus, while some used public transportation, and others carpooled. Keeping up his tradition of leading by

Irish Village opens its doors at Riverland Anybody looking to enjoy the unique atmosphere of The Irish village in Dubai now has twice the opportunity, thanks to the opening of a new home at Riverland Dubai, at Dubai Parks and Resorts. The latest incarnation is filled with memorabilia and bric-a-brac that transports you back to the heart of Ireland, while the menu stays faithful to the traditional Irish fare of the flagship restaurant. A mainstay in Dubai since 1996, The Irish Village has always been seen as a small piece of Ireland in the heart of the city. Designed in the form of a typical Irish village street, the Garhoud pub’s authenticity comes from the use of Irish materials, such as Liscannor stone, and Irish craftsmanship, all of 40

The Garhoud pub always throws a celebration fit for an Irishman, complete with Irish musicians straight from the homeland, and over 100 dancers from five to 18 years old to entertain the crowds.

Dubai Duty Free and WTA extend global partnership Dubai Duty Free, the world’s leading airport retailer, has extended its longstanding global sponsorship of women’s tennis. Under the agreement, Dubai Duty Free continues as one of the World Tennis Association’s (WTA) premier sponsors. The Dubai Duty Free Player Ambassador Program will be supported by WTA players Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and Zhang Shuai of China. Wozniacki continues her role as a valued ambassador for the sixth year and Zhang Shuai is newly introduced into the programme, representing Dubai Duty Free’s focus on China. The agreement also continues Dubai Duty Free’s sponsorship of the WTA Year-End World No 1 singles and doubles awards, most recently presented to Angelique Kerber and Sania Mirza at the

GOING GREEN It’s one of the most celebrated days around the world but, be honest, do you really know what St Patrick’s Day is all about? Words: Ashleigh Stewart
S
t Patrick’s Day could well be the only day of the year when it’s socially acceptable to drink Guinness before breakfast. OK, perhaps not entirely true, but it’s undeniable that celebrations the world over wouldn’t be the same without a few pints of the black stuff – 13 million were sold worldwide on St Patrick’s Day last year – so much so that it’s easy to forget that the celebration had such pious beginnings. The roots of celebrating St Patrick’s Day – or the Feast Of St Patrick – can be traced back to the early 17th century, but he was actually a fifth century RomanoBritish Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. While the details of his early life are unclear, it’s believed he was born in Roman 42 DUBAI VOYAGER
Britain (so he wasn’t actually even Irish) in the fourth century and into a fairly wealthy family. With a deacon for a father, and a priest for a grandfather, he seemed destined for the church, but like all good legends, that’s when things went slightly off course. At the age of 16 he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Gaelic Ireland. It was during his six years there, working as a shepherd, that he was said to have had a spiritual awakening. A divine command came down from the heavens for him to make his way to the coast, where a ship would be waiting to take him home. He eventually became a priest and asked to be sent back to Ireland as a missionary. Once there he excelled at bringing the old pagan traditions harmoniously together
with Christianity. Patrick died on March 17 and was buried at Downpatrick, near Belfast in Northern Ireland. He was declared a saint, but as the process didn’t exist at the time, he wasn’t canonised. That means that, technically, he’s a saint in name only. St Patrick’s Day became an official public holiday in Ireland in 1903 when it was introduced by Irish MP James O’Mara – the same man who later introduced a law to close public houses on March 17 because drinking had got so out of hand. The rule didn’t go down too well, and was repealed in 1961. The celebration is laden with symbolism, firstly, through colour. Although St Patrick’s Day is now unashamedly green, blue was actually the first colour associated with the

holiday. This changed to green as it became the colour of Irish nationalism. It also found a place in the Irish tricolour – green for the older Gaelic tradition, orange for the supporters of William of Orange, and white for the truce between the two. People began wearing it in parades as a sign of their commitment to Ireland. The shamrock didn’t really become a national emblem until the 19th century, but it was said to be used by St Patrick to help illustrate the doctrine of the trinity. It has been worn on March 17 since the 17th century. By the time you get around to leprechauns, it’s all starting to get a bit unusual. The flame-haired faerie is, by legend, an angry shoemaker with hidden gold. As the story goes, they pinch anyone who isn’t wearing green. If you are, you’re invisible to them – naturally. This soon snowballed into everyone’s least-favourite St Patrick’s Day tradition, but at least now you know how to avoid it. It doesn’t take too great an observation to realise that, whatever your heritage, everybody becomes honorary Irish on St Patrick’s Day. This is a global phenomenon, with some countries recognising it as a public holiday. You’ll get the day off in the Canadian provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the British Overseas Territory of Montserrat. Throw in the hordes of diaspora around the world that effectively treat the day like it’s a public holiday anyway, and you’ve got a pretty significant day on the

month, you’ll find a series of cultural events fired at you one after the other. Art Dubai, Design Days Dubai, the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, Puccini at Dubai Opera – five big hitters in just 31 days. Now in its 11th year, Art Dubai has a serious reputation on the international art calendar, something that’s reinforced by the famous name galleries and artists on the 2017 roster. Not just for the experienced art aficionado, it’s a perfect entry point event, too, and you can talk directly to artists, gallery owners and curators. If you’d rather something a little more practical, attached to Art Dubai is Design Days Dubai. Three days of limited edition and collectible furniture and design, it’s perfect for starting a collection or just improving your living room. Just down the road, the Emirates Airline
Festival of Literature includes talks, workshops and more, with a host of high profile authors in town – look out for Jon Ronson, Jeffrey Archer and Al Hammadi, Mohammed, this year. Finally, if you’d rather sit back and be entertained, then Dubai Opera hosts two of Puccini’s most renowned works, this month, in La bohème and Madama Butterfly. If you’d rather a little more pomp and ceremony, try four days of the BBC Proms. All things considered, that’s quite a schedule, but if you really do want the sun, sea, sand and shopping, then you’re in luck as, yes, Dubai does that pretty well, too.
