Adventures in China Exploring a country spread over almost four million square miles may seem like a daunting task, but thanks to China’s rushing modernity, it’s not so difficult to get around. Here are three places fit for any 21st century explorer
XI’AN Go for: the Terracotta Army Nowhere is as historic, important and essentially Chinese as Xi’an – the ancient terminus of the Silk Road. Its predecessor, Chang’an, reached its renaissance around AD750, and was home to an estimated one million people, making it one of the world’s early metropolises. Its prominence waned but modern Xi’an, with a population of some eight million, is not only an unrivalled hotbed of Chinese history but a buzzing city in its own right. Most people, however, visit Xi’an for one major attraction: the Terracotta Army. Commissioned by Emperor Qin Shi Huang,
the first ruler of a unified China, they have stood watch over his mausoleum for almost two millennia, but they weren’t even discovered until 1974 when peasants drilling a well stumbled on one of the world’s greatest archaeological treasures. It still hasn’t fully been unearthed. But there’s far more to Xi’an than its army of ancient paladins. Its imposing city walls still stand, which is rare for Chinese cities, and its religious heritage has been preserved via its ornate Great Mosque – China’s most famous Islamic site. Meanwhile, the 7th century Big Goose Pagoda, built to house Buddhist sutras, or teachings, brought east from India, is still one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.
Other impressive sites at Xi’an include the second century Famen Temple, its extensive Imperial Tombs and the sprawling Shaanxi Museum, named for the city’s surrounding province and chock-full of invaluable ancient artefacts from China’s formative centuries. During modern times the city was overlooked in favour of more strategic hubs such as Shanghai and Beijing. But its tourist status has afforded Xi’an an envious range of bars and restaurants, most of which serve up spicy Sichuan food. HANGZHOU Go for: China’s natural beauty There is a Chinese phrase that goes: “Up there is heaven, down here is Suzhou and Hangzhou.” As late as the 14th century famed explorer Marco Polo exclaimed that Hangzhou, the capital of China’s eastern Zhejiang Province, was the “City Of Heaven, the most beautiful and magnificent in the world.” Unsurprisingly, the city lives up to its billing. Located at the end of the Grand Canal, a Unesco World Heritage Site that snakes over 1,100 miles from Beijing, its waterways are some of China’s most visited sites. The West Lake, lined with historic pagodas, temples and gardens, is its bestknown attraction. Created when a local governor dredged the nearby lagoon in the eighth century, the lake is often home to events and festivals. Make sure to pick up some West Lake fish in sweet and sour sauce on your way round. But West Lake is far from Hangzhou’s only source of historic beauty. Visitors can enjoy the vaulted splendour of the 60-metre-high Six Harmonies Pagoda, the rock-cut Buddhist Lingyin Temple complex, and Qinghefang Old Street, complete with wood-fronted ancient homes and rows of traditional food and artisanal wares. Shoppers can also revel in Hefang Street, where one can find silks, tea and other items in the city’s bustle. Hangzhou is no sleepy old town, either: in recent years it has struck a chord as an IT hub and business centre (Alibaba’s headquarters are in the city). As such its nightlife caters to an increasingly young crowd, and bars with panoramic views of the lake stay open all hours. BEIJING Go for: the mind-boggling best of China The metropolis formerly romanised as Peking is an essential part of any trip to China. And being within short distance of the Great Wall – possibly the country’s most iconic site – means there is more than enough for a long stop-off at the Celestial City. In the very heart of Beijing, of course, are three of its most famous places. The Forbidden Palace is the largest palace complex in the world. Indeed, so off-limits to ordinary Chinese were its perfectly kept buildings, that for centuries wandering past its walls was punishable by instant execution. Thankfully no such penalty affords modern travellers, and well-priced tour guides are on hand for a more in-depth look at the site. Beside the Forbidden City sits a location much more readily associated with China’s recent past–and it’s important to remember the current government’s delicate position on Tiananmen Square when visiting the infamous, Soviet-style plaza. If you’re there early you can enjoy the flag raising ceremony of the People’s Liberation Army, the world’s second-biggest employer behind the US federal government. Nearby is the embalmed figure of Chairman Mao, China’s communist forefather, which is one of Beijing’s odder tourist stops. Besides that, Beijing has emerged recently as a global hub for the arts, with locations like the 798 Arts District, built by communist East Germany, full of exciting contemporary works from China and beyond. Food, too, has moved upmarket. And while the capital may lack the cosmopolitan edge of its national rival Shanghai, joints like King’s Joy, Black Sesame and Lost Heaven offer traditional regional grub in top-quality settings. KERALA Go for: the full package It should go without saying that spending Valentine’s Day on a pearl-white beach by the Arabian Sea is a pretty romantic way to celebrate your love. But there’s so much more to Kerala than its spectacular coastline. of dozens of brightly decked houseboats. On higher land are Kerala’s many hill stations, located on the sides of mistcovered mountains or sweeping tea and coffee plantations. Some are connected by the state’s railways, which are a gentle and relaxing way to watch its myriad natural wonders sweep by. Kerala is also known for its Ayurveda heritage, and it’s not difficult to find a host of high-quality practitioners offering
a range of soul-soothing treatments. And just when your body thinks it can’t take any more pleasure, tuck into one of Kerala’s sumptuous local culinary specialities, which often include seafood, coconut sauces and plenty of spice. BUENOS AIRES Go for: the dancing The birthplace of Argentina’s national dance duly serves a fiery dish of love and romance each Valentine’s Day. To enjoy the tango in a more traditional setting, try the Plaza Dorrego or Tango Porteño, both of which are often packed to the rafters with revellers young and old, local and foreign. Younger, fleet-footed pairs may prefer to pair up at La Catedral, a rambunctious club set in a 19th century church. Food and drink is served up in copious amounts and the fiesta usually carries on till the early hours of the morning. But Buenos Aires isn’t just about highoctane nights out: its trendy Palermo district is one of the world’s most pleasing places to take a long and winding stroll, past independent bistros, bars and storefronts. There are also a variety of food and drinks tours that take in its long history with red meat and wine. Later on, if your feet still have it in them, the city has become home to some of South America’s most exciting speakeasies, serving up bespoke drinks in prohibition-redolent settings. VENICE Go for: the classic setting La Serenissima barely needs an introduction: its winding canals and timeless architecture have attracted lovebirds for centuries. But in February the city is even more awash with colour and excitement than usual, with the arrival of its 18-day carnival, which includes film, music and art shows; guided tours; and, of course, Venice’s customary masked shows. They include the traditional Festa delle Marie, which evokes the bedizened bridal dowries the city’s leader, or Doge, would give to 12 local girls. Events aside, there’s no shortage of
things for couples to do in Venice. A host of palaces and galleries recount its former position as one of the world’s richest ports, while high-calibre shops, cafes and restaurants are tucked around almost every corner. Some of particular note include the seafood-heavy Dalla Marisa and Michelin-starred Quadri, whose local, fresh produce is enjoyed within viewing distance of Venice’s greatest landmark, St Mark’s Square. What: Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships 2017 Where: Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium When: February 19 to March 4 The superstars of the ATP tennis circuit are expected in town this month, for the 25th anniversary of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships – a mainstay of the city’s sporting calendar. The stellar line-up includes men’s No 1 Andy Murray and women’s top seed Angelique Kerber, but they’re only part of a big-name turnout – a fitting celebration for the tournament’s big anniversary, which has a combined prize-pool of US$5.2 million up for grabs. Murray, the reigning Wimbledon, Olympic and World Tour Finals champion, will be hoping to improve on his recent appearance in the UAE, after a semi-final defeat to World No 11 David Goffin at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi on December 30. Global stars perform for #musicDXB Last month Dubai Airports continued to surprise and delight passengers with performances from the winner of X-Factor Arabia and the cast of iconic musical, Cats. On January 24, the musicDXB stage at B Gates was illuminated by performers from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s much loved musical, which opened in London’s West End in 1981. The performers were in town for the
grand production of Cats at Dubai Opera, and selected cast members were able to put on a stunning show for travellers at DXB. Unlimited Free Wi-Fi at Dubai’s airports Passengers can now enjoy unlimited free highspeed Wi-Fi at both Dubai International and Dubai World Central after Dubai Airports rolled out the upgraded service last month. The unlimited Wi-Fi only takes one click to connect thanks to a simplified landing page and offers speeds that set a benchmark in airports worldwide. In fact, Dubai Airports has invested in more than 6,000 new Wi-Fi access points as part of the upgrade and enhanced the internet links to over 5Gbps for the best bandwidth capacity – that’s enough the power a small city. “We are the heart of many journeys across
the world today [and] when our passengers arrive in Dubai after a long journey they now expect to keep in touch with friends and family all over the world,” said Michael Ibbitson, Dubai Airports Executive Vice President of Business Technology. “This is just one of many initiatives we have undertaken to serve and delight the 83 million passengers that will pass through our airports this year.” The upgrade follows extensive research in passenger expectations, which was capped off by the successful completion of a four-month pilot project launched at Concourse D in July last year.
Sichuan Airlines launches Chengdu-DXB A traditional water salute welcomed Sichuan Airlines’ first direct flight from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport to Dubai International (DXB) on December 17. The airline, which operates into DXB’s Concourse D, offers travellers two weekly

flights on Airbus A330. Sichuan Airlines joined DXB’s list of 90 international airlines in September 2015 when the carrier launched flights between Chengdu and Dubai via Yinchuan Hedong International Airport.
A direct connection to Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, which is a major international airport serving the capital of China’s Sichuan province, is a significant addition to DXB’s connectivity which spans 240 destinations across six continents.

Andy Murray to play Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships 25th anniversary Newly-crowned world number one Andy Murray will head a stellar line-up for one of the most iconic sporting events in Dubai, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. The tournament, which will take place from February 19 – March 4, marks its 25th anniversary, and the current Wimbledon, Olympic Games and World Tour Finals champion will be on the hunt to add the prestigious Dubai title to his ever increasing list of accolades. Along with Murray, organisers are delighted to welcome perennial crowd favourite and seven-time Dubai champion Roger Federer back to delight the fans. Dubai defending champion, winner of three grand slams and world number four Stan Wawrinka, two time Dubai finalist Tomas Berdych, and entertaining world number seven Gael Monfils round out the men’s lineup of top 10 players.
The women’s line-up is equally impressive, with eight of the top ten players heading to Dubai to contest the coveted title. Led by world number one and winner of two grand slams in 2016, Angelique Kerber, the line-up includes 2012 Dubai champion and world number three Agnieszka Radwanska and 2015 Dubai champion and world number four Simona Halep.

DDF annual sales reach US$1.85 billion in 2016 Dubai Duty Free ushered in the New Year by announcing annual sales of US$1.85 billion in 2016. In February 2016, DDF opened 7,000 square metres of retail as part of the phased opening of the newest concourse in Dubai International Airport, which brought the retail area to 36,000 square metres across both of Dubai’s airports. Perfumes continue to be the highest selling product with 2016 sales topping US$306.85 million, making up 16.55 per cent of total annual sales. This was followed by liquor, with sales of US$295.40m. Cigarettes and tobacco came in third place with sales of US$160.70m, followed by cosmetics with sales of US$148.80 Confectionery raked in US$143.75m. Over the year, Dubai Duty Free recorded 40

Dubai Duty Free inducted into Global Traveler US Hall of Fame
Dubai Duty Free has cemented its place as one of the world’s favourite airport shopping destinations, after winning the “Best Duty Free Shops” award for the tenth consecutive year and being inducted into the Global Traveler Hall of Fame. The honour was announced at the Global Traveler (GT) US Awards, held at The
Peninsula Beverly Hills in Los Angeles. Dubai Duty Free came out on top for the US-based magazine’s annual GT Tested Reader Survey, which asks frequent business travellers to name the best in a variety of travel-related categories, including duty free. The survey attracted more than 22,000 responses and was conducted between January to August this year. Dubai Duty Free is the only duty free in the Global Traveler Hall of Fame. “We are very honoured to win the ‘Best Duty Free Shops’ award for 10 consecutive years and to be inducted in the Global Traveler US Award Hall of Fame,” said Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of Dubai Duty Free. “We thank the readers of the Global Traveler magazine for once again voting for Dubai Duty Free for being the very best of the best.”

Valentine’s Day is upon us and whether you love it or hate it, if there’s a special someone in your life, you better embrace it Words: Ashleigh Stewart
F
or all those who write Valentine’s Day off as nothing other than an astronomically successful advertising campaign dreamed up in a Hallmark meeting room, prepare to be considerably impressed. While the commercial value of the least favourite day of the year for every single girl and every married man has skyrocketed since its humble beginnings, in reality, Valentine’s Day is a deep-seated cultural tradition. The solid facts of historical significance may have become a little muddied somewhere along the line, but Valentine’s Day (most likely) marks the martyrdom of an important Roman priest. Just who that priest was – and which version of the story is correct – is where things become a little unclear. 42 DUBAI VOYAGER
The most popular legend marks Saint Valentine’s roots in third century Rome, when Emperor Claudius II banned young men from marrying, deciding those with families made poorer soldiers. Outraged, a priest named Valentine continued marrying young couples in secret, until he was discovered and sentenced to death. Before his untimely end, Valentine supposedly healed the blind daughter of his jailer, and offered the newly healed young girl a handwritten card. Inscribed on it was: “From Your Valentine.” Another fun fact: Saint Valentine supposedly had an image of Cupid – the Roman figure associated with love – engraved on his customary purple amethyst ring . But, as with every good modern-day
tradition, competing legends mean nobody is actually quite sure where or how it all started. Another version states that Valentine invented the greeting after falling in love with a young woman before his death, writing the same note on a hand-written card. The Catholic Church actually recognises several different saints named Valentine – all of whom were martyred. Regardless, it makes our soppy Hallmark cards overflowing with John Legend lyrics and terrible puns seem all the more ridiculous. But not all cultures associate the day with chocolate, flowers and a cherub wielding a bow and arrow. In Norfolk, England, ‘Jack’ Valentine leaves presents and chocolates for kids at the back door of the house. Despite the obvious

allure of free treats, children grew to fear the mythical creature frequenting their back doorstep. In the Philippines, Valentine’s Day mass wedding ceremonies have swept the country, meaning people gather in their hundreds to tie the knot. In Slovenia, Saint Valentine (or Zdravko as he’s known) is a saint of spring and good health. Valentine’s Day is known as the day plants and flowers begin to grow, and is the day work in the vineyards and fields can start. It’s also known as the day birds propose to each other – although exactly who and how people are keeping track of their marital status is unclear. One of our favourite customs originates in Japan, where only women are expected to give chocolates on February 14. But fret not ladies, come March 14 on ‘White Day’, men are expected to return the favour – giving gifts two or three times the value of what they received. All we can say is, hats off to the confectionary company who dreamed up that advertising campaign-cum-national tradition. However, these perhaps pale in comparison to what is believed to be the Romans’ early celebrations of Valentine’s Day – which was loosely associated with Lupercalia, the fertility festival. During this festival, priests would take to the streets to (gently) slap women and crop fields with blood-soaked goat and dog hide. Far from being duly disgusted, women embraced the ritual because they believed it would make them fertile. It wasn’t until the Middle Ages that the
day became more commonly associated with romance. In France and England, February 14 was known as the beginning of birds’ mating season (perhaps birds do get engaged…), which added weight to the idea that Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance. English poet Geoffrey Chaucer was perhaps the first to link the day with romance in 1382, with a poem to honour the first anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II to Anne of Bohemia. Flowers became a symbol of Valentine’s in the 17th Century, and roses in particular as they were Venus the Goddess of Love’s flower of choice. Handmade Valentine’s cards were the norm until 1847, before that gave way to mass production. Enter Hallmark. Before long, chocolate manufacturers got onboard the commercial train, and Valentine’s Day as we know it was born. As for here in the UAE, all we can say to the panicking husbands of the land is to keep it simple. With the big day falling on a Tuesday this year, it’s going to be a bit hard to spend the day wining and dining your other half, but a dinner for two in a swanky restaurant is always a winner. Most of the city’s best-known restaurants will be offering up special Valentine’s set menus and experiences. And look at it this way: Valentine’s Day 2017 will not involve the performing of miracles, being slapped with blood-soaked goat hide or writing revolutionary poems of days of old. A card, some flowers and a box of chocolates will do.

Anyone for tennis? T h e b e au t y o f t h e D u b a i D u t y Fre e Te n n i s C h a m p i o n s h i p s There are certain times of year when it’s simply great to be in Dubai. February, you’ll be pleased to read, is one of them. The weather’s perfect, the beaches are pleasantly packed, and the events seem to come thick and fast. This month alone you can look forward to the Emirates Airline Dubai Jazz Festival – starring Tom Jones, Mariah Carey and Enrique Iglesias; the Dubai Food Festival – starring a whole load of hunger-inducing 66 DUBAI VOYAGER
options throughout the city, and the Omega Dubai Desert Classic – starring some bloke called Tiger Woods. In terms of the history of the city, however, no event really strikes a chord more so than the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, and this month it celebrates its 25th anniversary. The landscape of Dubai has changed somewhat since the Czech, Karel Novacek, lifted the first trophy back in 1993 – a time when the tournament was known simply as the Dubai Men’s Open. In fact the venue was almost unrecognisable at the time, with no Irish or Century Village attached to the stadium in Garhoud. The big name talent has come thick and fast since then, with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic forming an unofficial timeshare ownership of the trophy, winning

11 of the last 14 men’s tournaments between them (Federer seven, Djokovic four). Women weren’t added to the bill until 2001, but since then we’ve seen legends of the game arrive in town, with Martina Hingis, Venus Williams and Justine Henin all taking home the title. There’s been lots of other milestones in-between, with Dubai even winning World Tour 500 Tournament of the Year a staggering 11 times since 2003. As for this year, fans will find both 2016 winners are back to defend their titles. But whether Stan Wawrinka and Sara Errani will be able to hold off a challenge from men and women’s world number ones, Andy Murray and Angelique Kerber, remains to be seen.
