United for charity As we enter into the final weeks of the intensive Expo 2020 bidding process, millions of people all over the Emirates are anxiously waiting to see if the UAE’s bid has been successful. The initiative has won the support of major global personalities, from Bill Gates to former US President Bill Clinton, and from Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron to French President François Hollande. Britain’s Prince Harry was recently in Dubai for a charity gala, which raised over US$1 million for the Sentebale Foundation, set up by the prince with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho to help HIV-infected children. HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Department of Civil Aviation, CEO and Chairman of The Emirates Group, accompanied the young prince to the fundraising event. During his whirlwind tour of Dubai, he too added his support to the country’s ambitious plan to be the first in the region to ever host a World Expo. A few days later a bevy of celebrities from the world of fashion, including Donatella Versace, Roberto Cavalli, Silvia Fendi, Naomi Campbell and many others, jetted in to take part in the inaugural edition of Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience, held at The Dubai Mall. Over 250 fashion brands participated in the event, which secured Dubai’s place as a regional fashion capital while also raising more than US$1,200 for Dubai Cares. The charity organisation seeks to promote primary school education for children in underprivileged communities across the globe. A number of exciting new real estate developments were revealed at the 12th edition of Cityscape Global, held in Dubai recently. The developments show how the Dubai of the future may look – a Dubai that hopes to welcome some 20 million visitors by the Expo year of 2020. As the city’s second airport – Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central – opens, the city is preparing for an exciting month ahead in the lead up to the height of the tourist season. Dubai Air Show The best things are in plane view. From 17 to 21 November 2013 the dubai air Show is hosting what organisers and F&E aerospace have predicted to be the largest event in 26 years, this 13th edition attracting 60,000 trade visitors and 1,000 exhibitors. From their new purpose-built home at dubai World Central (dWC) in Jebel ali, dubai, the show will welcome over 210 first-time exhibitors. up to 150 aircraft will be displayed at the new site, with up to 50 business aircraft including family fleets, feature fighter jets and uaV’s. Plus, there will be a debuts will include the Sudanese SaFaT 03 a basic fixed-wing trainer, and italian company Tecnam, bringing two new aircraft, the P2002JF and P2006T. Al Ghurair Centre Mall expansion it’s in the bag. al Ghurair Centre, the uaE's first mall, is a landmark. and this major part of the redevelopment of deira is getting a dhs 2 billion overhaul. The expansion will feature over 130 new stores, and nearly 80,000 square meters of retail, food and beverage and entertainment across 350 outlets. Their external sidewalks and tree-lined streets are a part of the al Ghurair Centre experience, just like the wonderful new interiors.

Abu Dhabi Art’s 5th edition it’s state of the art. This year’s abu dhabi art Fair has a new artist-led section with an expanded design programme focusing on architecture and uaE aesthetics, as well as a performing arts platform that coincides with the four-day event (20-23 November). The programme begins in Saadiyat Cultural district and expands into the city of abu dhabi with a special route connected by enactments and cultural happenings. dOWn With support from all corners of the globe, the uae waits with baited breath this month to find out whether its vision for the expo 2020 is a winning bid. dv takes as look at the uae's initiatives for a world-class event, encapsulated with the slogan of ‘Connecting minds, creating the future’. It’s the ultimate connection: Dubai. Outranking cities such as New York, Amsterdam, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai and Beijing in a recent survey by Mastercard Worldwide, it ranks in the top 10 cities for inbound international visitors—and is the home of over 200 nationalities. Dazzling global leaders—including former US President Bill Clinton and London Mayor Boris Johnson—with its promise of 'Connecting minds, creating the future', the city has sent its Expo attachés by land and by sea to international destinations on missions of international exchange, education and good will ambassadorship. If selected, Dubai anticipates that more than 25 million people will visit the event over six months, including 70 percent from outside the UAE. And the world is taking notice as international global leaders pledge their support for the city’s bid for World Expo 2020 (the Expo takes place every five years for a period of six months), securing the possibility of its place as the first city to host in the MENASA (Middle East, North Africa and South Asia) region. A leading official behind Dubai's bid to host the 2020 World Expo has said the emirate "clearly has the strongest bid." Ahead of a final vote by the Paris-based Bureau of International Expositions (BIE) in November, Helal Saeed Al Marri, a member of the Higher Committee of the Dubai bid, said: "In terms of the vote itself we are in a very, very strong position. We have a lot of support from international counterparts in various countries; many of you have heard the public support from places like France and the UK and many other places." Tim Clark, President of Emirates airline, points to the importance of Dubai winning the 2020 bid: “Last year alone, more than 51 million passengers travelled through Dubai International Airport, where 150 airlines serve 220 destinations on six continents….Dubai Airport is now poised to be the world’s busiest international airport by 2015. The logistical advantages of the site both for exhibitors – bringing in materials and constructing pavilions – and visitors are clear. Securing an architectural legacy from Expo 2020, after the event the Dubai Trade Center – Jebel Ali will be a lasting and working monument to the power of connectivity: a place for people to come together and make a difference.” 20

By Sea Poised to welcome and connect the best of the world’s cultural, environmental, technological and economic leaders, Dubai’s bid committee launched its goodwill vessel, True North—a nuanced global circumnavigation project that has captured the hearts and minds of international environmental experts and humanitarians in around the world. Inspired by the region’s history of sailing, trade and cultural exchange, the 21-metre (70-foot) sailing boat metaphorically represents the right path and being guided by an inner compass. The name of the vessel most closely translates to Najmet al-Shamal – or North Star, in Arabic. Before GPS, the North Star was used to guide both ships at night and nomads across the desert. True to its mission as a beacon of a hopeful future, Dubai hopes to become a destination of the ‘True North’, a lighthouse guiding and welcoming the expected 25 million visitors. However, in addition to its philosophical gestures, it’s a hands-on attempt to foster a global conversation vital to Dubai’s vision as an international meeting place. Its multinational crew has been connecting with communities in each port, engaging in intergenerational exchanges rooted in their experiences of how the Dubai Expo themes of sustainability, mobility and opportunity impact their daily lives. True North’s journey has taken it to the Panama Canal where it met with Manuel Benitez, the canal’s Sub-Administrator. The 35-year veteran is an expert on of the importance of mobility in enabling economic growth for countries in Central America. Currently carrying four to five per cent of world trade, it’s now being expanded to

cater for larger ships with higher tonnage. This means that although the number of transits may go down, the amount of goods being transported will increase, using less fuel and so emitting less carbon. In Cuba, the True North team explored Organoponico Vivero Almar, the urban, sustainable farm that employs 162 people and has been in operation for 16 years. Maria Salcines Milla, the daughter of the farm’s founder, passionately believes in the philosophy of her work. She explained to the crew, “It is important to educate people on being sustainable and the importance of eating in a healthy way”. During their mission the crew learned that 70% of Cuban farms are organic, prompted by the economic crisis of 1989 when chemical imports were banned. The response: Cuban farmers adapted and co-operative organisations explored natural ways of sustainably growing produce, as well as creating workers’ communities. Costa Rica also offered key environmental insights for the crew. They met with the Mayor of the town of Jaco, Marvin Elizondo. He explained how the environment was the future of his country. “I hope that in time we can become an example for other countries; showing how it is possible to work together, form partnerships and protect and sustain what we have”, he said. He also offered advice about sustaining both tourism and environmental harmony: “Tourism is considered key to creating economic opportunities yet sustainability has not slipped from the agenda – initiatives include laws to protect the mountains and waterways, and guidelines to protect the environment in construction areas.” november 2013

By land This August six Emirati motorcyclists embarked on a massive European adventure to advance the mission and message of Dubai 2020. Established in 2008 to combat stereotypes about motorcyclists, the team advanced the Dubai Expo 2020 mission with the UAE flag and Dubai Expo 2020 logo decorating their bikes – concerned only with the prospect of mechanical snafus. These unofficial bid ambassadors prepared for their journey by visiting Italy (winner of Expo 2015) for three weeks, then riding through Greece, Italy, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden and Holland. “We were honoured to be chosen to represent Expo 2020. Just being allowed to have the Expo 2020 logo on our bikes is a great responsibility that we take pride in,” said team member Sami Hassan. Nasser Al Falasi, another rider, explained: “I think that it is a nice way of paying back my country which has given me so much. We hope that we will be able to show our country in a good light and we are optimistic that we will win. I think that winning is important because it will make Dubai more international than it already is.” 22

And their generosity is quantitative—as well as qualitative. All expenses (which are very great) for this trip and all other previous trips were personally funded by the team members. The cyclists, no strangers to community awareness events, have been active in breast cancer campaigns, thalassaemia support initiatives, the National Day and many more. To win the Blue Flag accreditation sites must comply with up to 32 criteria for beaches and 24 criteria for marinas covering four key areas: environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management, and safety services. The UAE’s newly accredited sites join a list of more than 4000 beaches and marinas across 46 different countries. Tokyo has appointed British-Iraqi star architect Zaha Hadid to design a futuristic 80,000-seat stadium as the centrepiece of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The main Olympic stadium will have a retractable roof and will also be the venue for the 2019 Rugby World Cup. The 2020 games will give Japan an opportunity to showcase its recovery from the devastating 2011 tsunami and earthquake. This will include the rebuilding and revitalisation of the Tokyo waterfront, which will be the site of the Olympic Village. Hadid, however, may find herself jetting between Dubai and Tokyo, as she is also behind the new Melía Hotel in Dubai – the first hotel to be 100% designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect. Meanwhile, on the shores of the scenic Lake Maggiore in Italy, part of the waterfront has been named ‘Fazza’, the pseudonym of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Dubai’s Crown Prince and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council. The announcement was made prior to the opening of the first UIM Skydive Dubai XCAT World Series – said to be the most challenging of all global powerboat races – to be held outside the UAE. The naming of part of the historic waterfront is in recognition of the contribution that Sheikh Hamdan has made to powerboat racing. A plaque explaining the meaning of the word Fazza, which in Arabic means chivalrous, compassionate, caring and generous, was mounted on the waterfront by the local authorities. Venice’s famous gondolas are to be fitted with high-tech GPS navigation systems in a bid to reduce accidents on the city’s canals. The move to have the iconic vessels fitted with registration plates and GPS systems follows the tragic death of a German tourist on the Grand Canal earlier this year. As well as aiding navigation, the equipment will regulate the speed at which the gondolas move through the canals, which have become increasingly congested in recent years. In addition to this, a number of CCTV security cameras are to be installed along the historic Grand Canal as part of authorities’ attempts to use modern technology to make the city safer and more pleasant. Dubai taxis are to be fitted with new sensors that will automatically start the meter running when a passenger gets on board. The move is expected to reduce squabbles between drivers and passengers – and will make sure that nobody gets a free ride! The sensors will also monitor speeds as part of the Road Transport Authority’s bid to increase passenger and road safety. dv

DXB and its 100-plus dining outlets recognise the value of serving exemplary meals before take-off; not only does the world’s second busiest airport serve some of the most innovative menu options globally but it also makes sure that it has a plate for every palate. ready to take off Over 1,200 people, including men, women, children, senior citizens and individuals with special needs played the role of passengers arriving and departing through al Maktoum international airport, at dubai World Central, to thoroughly test every aspect of the passenger experience across the new terminal building, ahead of its official opening. This test followed a comprehensive series of preliminary exercises that were carried out at the facility in previous weeks, with the participation of staff working at the airport and with partner companies. This major trial concentrated on the passenger experience, testing the clarity of way-finding signage, the readiness of staff, systems and processes, and the flow of passenger traffic within the new building. Paul Griffiths, CEO of dubai airports, said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The trial has yielded some very valuable feedback which we will be acting on to ensure we have a seamless opening in two weeks. i would like to thank all the volunteers who took time during their weekend to support the trial.â&#x20AC;? 36

The collection celebrates the world’s greatest rivers and includes works from several uaE students. Opened in October by dubai airports CEO, Paul Griffiths, together with senior executives from key stakeholders, Rivers of the World is a Thames Festival project led by the Thames Festival Trust in England, and realised by HSbC bank Middle East. dubai airports and dubai duty Free in partnership with the british Council. The project aims to link 30,000 young people around the world each year by focusing on a common theme, the river, and promoting a greater understanding and appreciation of nature and waterways across the participating countries. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on the two-day event that saw Dubai Duty Free extend it support for racing at one of the legendary names in racing. On the weekend of the Dubai Duty Free Cup, a Listed pattern race for three year-olds and upward, Dubai Duty Free renewed its support for racing at Newbury and celebrated the signing in front of a host of personalities from the horse racing industry and travel retail business. Amongst the many guests were Sir Maurice and Lady Audrey Flanagan, Simon Crisford, Frankie Dettori, the Hon. Sir Harry Herbert, the Hon Sir David Sieff and Lady Sieff, and Nicholas Jones. The close relationship between Dubai Duty Free and the Berkshire venue has been renewed for a further three years in light of their successful partnership for the past 18 years. The dubai duty Free Golf World Cup is a two days tournament, by invitation only and for amateur players with a maximum handicap of 28 for men, and 36 for women, that attracts top executives from the duty-free industry from around the region and the world: more than 100 participants are expected to take part in this year’s edition of what started as a friendly competition and then turned into one of the most successful golfing events on the duty free calendar. Colm McLoughlin, dubai duty Free’s Executive Vice Chairman, was recently presented with two prestigious awards recognizing his vision, his great contribution to the duty Free industry and his excellent leadership at the helm of dubai duty Free for the past 30 years during which the business grew from an annual turnover of uS$20 million to an expected uS$1.8 billion this year. at the 3rd asian Leadership awards, held in dubai, McLoughlin was named ‘CEO of the Year’. This is the second year in a row that dubai duty Free is celebrated at the asian Leadership awards, after last year winning for ‘Operational Excellence’ and Colm McLoughlin’s award for ‘Lifetime achievement’. at the 25th annual american Celtic ball, held in New York, he received the Sir Michael Smurfit business achievement award, which recognizes the business and humanitarian achievements made by irish nationals living both in ireland and overseas. “i have looked at the former recipients of this award” he said “and i am deeply honored to join such an illustrious line up. i am very proud of all that has been achieved by dubai duty Free for the past 30 years and i thank our Chairman His Highness Sheikh ahmed bin Saeed al Maktoum and our team of staff for their support.” He also said to be very proud of his irish heritage and recalled his time as a Chairman of the dubai irish Society and President of the dubai Celts. 30 years sTronG dubai duty Free has more than one reason to be jubilant ahead of the celebrations for its 30th anniversary in december: the first nine month of sales reached dhs 4.65 billion (uS$ 1.27 billion) representing a 12% increase over the same period last year and projecting a year-end sales of dhs 6.6 billion (uS$ 1.8 billion). all the three terminals enjoyed strong growth, with sales in Terminal 3 rising by 17% year to date to dhs 2.94 billion (uS$ 805 million) and accounting for 63% of total ddF turnover. Terminal 2, which is responsible for 7.6% of turnover, saw sales rise by 22% to dhs 352 million (uS $96.5 million) year to date. Terminal 1, which generates 28% of total turnover, recorded nine month sales of dhs 1.3 billion (uS$ 358.5 million). arrivals also saw sales rising by 14% across all three terminals, reaching dhs 457 million (uS$ 125 million), now accounting for 10% of ddF sales. Commenting on the nine months sales figures, Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of dubai duty Free said: “We are having a terrific year in terms of sales and we are looking forward to ending this 30th anniversary on a high note. Concourse a, which opened in January 2013, has been a great and much needed addition to Terminal 3, and the expansion program in Terminal 2 is coming to a conclusion shortly. theatrical version of Dubai. It had a lovely sense of old-fashioned gentlemen’s club to it. In the new terminal, the lounges have more of a hotel feel which is a great thing. I love Dubai Airport; I’ll be very relaxed if I know I have an hour or so wait there.

Where was your last holiday? I literally just got back from Cyprus, from a lovely resort called Aphrodite Hills. We just had a quick week with my brother and his boys as a family before filming starts for the Apartment show next week.

How do you explore a new city? I tend to be working so I will always have a really good guide. I read up on where I’m going to be and what I could look forward to seeing. Of course it’s always a bit of a problem with Dubai as it changes every month!

Do you travel light?

How do you cope with jet lag? Why did you choose Dubai for the preliminary launch?

I’ve liked them all, but I very much enjoyed the Holiday programme for the BBC, as they were very quick to let me go to some unusual places, from Abu Dhabi to Blackpool and Havana to Llandudno.

I’m wanting to provide a very opulent keyhole for people to be able to take their pick from the real highlights of British design, particularly that glamorous and seductive take on style that you get in British upper class decorating. I’ve always been a huge fan of Dubai; it has such a fabulous energy to it. I think that now Dubai has become the style hub of the Middle East, and once you’ve launched something in Dubai, you’ve launched it in the rest of the Middle East. Dubai does the same for the Middle East as Milan does for Europe.

What is your favourite show you have hosted?

Which is the best interiors element of Dubai airport? I actually preferred the Emirates lounge in the original terminal, where it was a strange

Change your watch to the time of your final destination as soon as you’re on the plane so that your mind readjusts, and don’t go straight to bed when you land; go to bed at a normal time.

What do you never leave home without? I would never leave home without a really good book. I very much like to enjoy travel, and part of that is being able to read. Planes are very comfortable now, particularly Emirates, so my family will be amused to find me bolt upright in my seat reading a book.

Where is your favourite place to socialise in Dubai? Jumeirah Zabeel Saray - I love the vodka bar there even though I don’t like to drink vodka, so I’ll have a glass of white wine there and feel more than looked after. It has a very contemporary Ibiza lounge feel there. dv

Yes I’m very good at travelling; I don’t take things I don’t need. I’ll turn up to the airport and be met by the people I’ll be working with, with a fleet of vehicles for my luggage when in fact I’ll just have one bag. People are often quite surprised by that.
