The cooler weather means Dubai’s sports and outdoor recreation scene is in full swing.

World-class footballers from Real Madrid and AC Milan have just departed, making way for tennis superstars including Novak Djokovic,Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Serena Williams, Agnieszka Radwanska, Caroline Wozniacki to take centre stage at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which begin this month. (15-28 February) Meanwhile, Dubai’s super sporty Crown Prince and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, also 2014 FEI World Endurance Champion, recently rode to victory on home turf, winning the HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Endurance Cup CEI. Over 200 local and international riders competed in the 160-kilometre race held in Dubai recently.

Over Dhs208 million/ Dhs56 million has been raised by caring residents for the UAE Tarahamu – a compassionate initiative helping the refugees and people of the Levant endure a particularly harsh winter.

Spearheaded by the country’s government, philanthropists from all walks of life have donated money, clothes and food for the million Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Gaza and Palestine.

Generous donations came from Dubai Duty Free, Emirates Airlines and Dubai Cares, who each donated Dhs5 million. Emirates Islamic Bank donated Dhs3 million and Sheikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline & Group, donated Dhs3.6 million.

The Chinese community is gearing up for an exciting New Year – 4713, which begins on February 19.

Dressed in traditional red clothing, millions of Chinese all over the world will welcome in the ‘Year of the Sheep’ with lion and dragon dances, lantern festivals, dragon boat races, fireworks and, of course, the exchange of ‘lucky’ envelopes and gifts…

RECORD BREAKERS! Dubai and the rest of the UAE is keeping the world on its toes by winning numerous Guinness World Records. These winners keep us wondering: what records will Dubai break next?

The Guinness World record for winning LeD illumination was set by the burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, when it marked its fifth anniversary with the illumination on its façade.

Spanning a total area of 32,467 square metres, the LeD display had 70,000 LeD bulbs placed in position using over 100,000 brackets and linked seamlessly using 55,000 metres of cabling for the perfect visual display.

The Guinness World record for the largest football mosaic was set by Standard Chartered with a 280-square metre mosaic made out of 6,000 special footballs in the four colours of the uae flag. a Guinness World record was achieved at burj Park by the Stay Strong Campaign, which is leading the fight against diabetes, by lighting 11,022 bulbs. each bulb represented the number of Stay Strong app downloads in the uae.

The General Directorate of Civil Defence achieved a new Guinness World record by forming the world’s largest flag made of pencils by constructing a national flag that stretched across more than 1,000 square metres, using with one million pencils – 250,000 for each colour of the uae flag.

The Guinness World record for the longest graffiti scroll – at 2.2454km – was broken by The rehlatna, or Our Journey, an event bringing together the talents of national and international graffiti artists.

The Guinness World record for the most people carrying a flag banner included 2139 emirati students from the abu Dhabi Vocational education and Training Institute (aDVeTI) in cooperation with abu Dhabi equestrian Club.

Dubai set the Guinness World record for assembling the greatest number of cars of different makes in a parade at the

Meydan racetrack, with 58 brands of cars, including Peugeot, Kia, Cadillac and Porsche. emirates SkyCargo, Dubai airports and Dubai World Central (DWC), together with Dubai-based allied Transport, have created the longest moving convoy of uae flags with a 1.3-kilometre convoy of 43 allied cargo trucks.

Dubai set the Guinness World record for the world’s longest 22-carat hand-made gold chain, the ‘Dubai Celebration Chain’ measuring 5.522 kilometres.

Sponsored by the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group (DGJG) in collaboration with Dubai Festival and retail establishment (DFre), the milestone was achieved as part of the 20th annual Shopping Festival.

The Guinness World record for the largest tennis mosaic was created at Dubai’s Jumeirah beach Hotel after more tha 2,327 tennis balls were merged together.

emirates airline Jazz Festival 2015 is bringing the globe’s best performers and fans to Dubai. Set in a relaxed atmosphere, Jazz Fest has become an international destination for aficionados.

Launched in 2003 as a three-day mainstream jazz festival where 1200 tickets were sold, the numbers have since doubled and tripled. In 2014, the festival attracted more than 60,000 attendees across the nine days. With superstar John Legend headlining this year’s festival, other show-stopping multiple award-winning entertainers include Sting, James blunt, esperanza Spalding, Christina Perri and Lindsay Stirling, among others. The special Jazz in the City event highlighting 18 jazz and blues acts throughout the city is free, as is urban Sessions, another multiple-artist event running as part of the festival.

Excitement is in the air this month as Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships celebrate a 23rd (men’s) and 15th (women’s) year.

Tennis professionals and fans from across the globe are gathering for this international tennis circuit favourite, which runs from 15 to 28 February 2015 at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium and offers total prize money of US$5 million.

Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of tournament owner and organiser Dubai Duty Free, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming the world’s best players back to Dubai. Matches will be held at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium in Garhoud, the games beginning on 15 February with the US$2.5 million WTA event (the global leader in women’s professional sport, with more than 2500 players representing 92 nations affiliated) event, followed on 23 February with the US$2.5 million ATP tournament (the governing body of the men’s Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships was awarded the aTP 500 Tournament of the Year award for 2013, for an unprecedented 10th time since 2003. 1000 Times The Charm World tennis champion, 33-year old Roger Federer is at the height of his game. The winner of last year’s dubai duty Free Tennis Championships continues to break records and take the tennis world by storm with his unprecedented wins. His latest: in a heartpounding two hour and 13 minute threeset final against Milos Raonic, the Swiss reached the 1000 aTP Tour wins milestone by clinching the coveted brisbane title – his 83rd title. This makes him the third person in modern history to reach 1000 win mark, the other two being ivan Lendl and Jimmy Connors.

Established as the Dubai Men’s Open in 1993, the tournament has grown immensely, boosting the local interest and zeal for tennis as well as an international interest in the region. The result: virtually every men’s and women’s professional tennis star has taken part in the event, including Goran Ivanisevic, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Martina Hingis, Amélie Mauresmo and Justine Henin.

As McLoughlin explains, Dubai’s hospitable spirit is a prime motivation for their return. “We strive to ensure the players experience great hospitality and a warm Dubai welcome every year. The fact that we have won the ATP World Tour 500 Tournament of the Year Award for the tenth time is testament to the efforts we make to ensure all players and spectators have a

This year’s WTA entry list features a thrilling line-up of eight of the top ten players and seventeen of the top 20 players in the world. The United Arab Emirates will be where the first solar-powered flight around the world starts in March and finishes in July. Solar Impulse 2 was delivered to the UAE late in 2014 and was showcased during the World Future Energy Summit in January, when testing and training also began.

“We have chosen this location as being the best and most suitable departure and return point for the round-the-world tour, due to its climate, infrastructure and commitment to clean technologies,” said André Borschberg, one of the pilots and co-founders of this extraordinary project.

The Solar Impulse round-the-world tour is expected to take 25 flying days over four or five months, with the steps from the UAE capital, and stops in Asia, the United States and in Southern Europe and North Africa set to be confirmed shortly. Borschberg and fellow Swiss pilot and project co-founder Dr Bertrand Piccard will take turns flying the aircraft. They will be supported by a multidisciplinary team of 80 specialists from different countries, assisted by about 100 outside advisers.

The story began in 1999, when Bertrand Piccard flew around the world in a balloon with crewmate Brian Jones. The success of the precarious voyage depended on a number of factors – not least the availability and limited consumption of fossil fuels. This hit home when, after almost 20 days above Earth, Breitling Orbiter 3 touched down – with only 4kg of its initial 3.7 tonnes of propane gas left.

It was then that Piccard made a resolution that his next flight around the world would be fuel and emissions-free, setting in motion the idea of a solar aeroplane.

Over the next few years, Piccard and Jones began to explore the possibilities of building such an aircraft, launching a feasibility study that was managed by engineer, entrepreneur and fighter pilot, André Borschberg. As soon as the study’s positive findings were known, Piccard and Borschberg publicly announced the Solar Impulse project, in November 2003.

In that same year, the relationship between Masdar and Solar Impulse began, stemming from a shared perspective between the UAE leadership and the founders of the Solar Impulse project to promote greater technological innovation, and to help encourage other nations and organisations to embrace cleaner and more efficient technologies. His Excellency Dr Sultan Ahmad Al Jaber, UAE Minister of State and Chairman of Masdar said: “Masdar and Solar Impulse have in common a pioneering spirit, a long-term vision and a desire to explore new horizons. We share a commitment to foster the development of technological advances

In April 2010 Solar Impulse 1 made its first flight with test pilot Markus Scherdel, which lasted for 87 minutes. Just two months later André Borschberg embarked on an unprecedented adventure that resulted in a world record: a fully solar-powered day-and-night flight lasting 26 hours. In 2012 the Solar Impulse team concluded the world’s first round trip, fully solar-powered intercontinental flight by landing safely at its home base in Payerne, Switzerland. In total, HB-SIA holds eight world records, including for absolute height and height gain.

The lessons learned from the flights and tests of HB-SIA have been incorporated in Solar Impulse 2 (HB-SIB), the solar airplane in which the circumnavigation of the globe will be attempted this year. Made of carbon fibre, this revolutionary single-seater aircraft has a 72-metre wingspan, bigger than that of the latest Boeing 747 – yet weighs just 2300 kg, roughly as much as a family SUV. Integrated into the wing are 17,000 solar cells that supply energy to the four electric motors, which each develop 17.5hp. During the day, the solar cells recharge lithium batteries weighing 633kg, allowing the aircraft to fly at night. dv

THe TeCHNICaL CHaLLeNGe What is being attempted by Solar Impulse 2 has never been achieved before. This requires the optimization of new kinds of technology and a drastic reduction in energy consumption. This makes Solar Impulse 2 an airborne technology laboratory that has involved the invention of electrolytes that allow the energy density of the batteries to be increased, the development of new nanotechnologies the use of carbon fibre that is lighter in weight than any previously seen.

THe HuMaN CHaLLeNGe The long flights of this adventure, especially those of five consecutive days and nights to cross the Pacific and atlantic oceans, will pose great challenges to the pilot, who will occupy an extremely small, unheated and unpressurized cockpit. During their 500 hours of total flight time, bertrand Piccard and andré borschberg will experience temperatures of between -40°C and +40°C, accompanied by six oxygen bottles, one parachute, one life raft and enough food and water for a week.

The MaSTer of the K eYS arsha Kaviani, acclaimed young classical music virtuoso, speaks to dv about his love for music and his experience of growing up in Dubai as a pianist and composer. WOrDS laURa VolPi

D

ubai-born pianist and composer Arsha Kaviani made his debut with the Dubai Chamber Orchestra at the age of just only 14. After playing all over the world, from London’s Cadogan Hall to the Moscow Conservatory, he has earned the praise of worldwideacclaimed musicians, such as Krystian Zimerman, who said: “Arsha has a unique gift for music and a charismatic approach to it, which is very rare.”

Born in 1990 to Iranian parents, Kaviani trained in Dubai and Manchester, UK, where he studied with Murray McLachlan and Bryce Morrison, among others. He was selected as one of Orpheum Foundation’s Young Soloists, which resulted in him giving his debut with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich with Maestro Kristjan Järvi. During performances he regularly improvises on themes provided by the audience during concerts and performs his own compositions.

How did you become a pianist?

It was a very organic process of me falling in love with the instrument and music on my own terms, which I feel is the best possible way.

Do you have a favourite composer?

That’s impossible to say. Some music is written far more ‘pianistically’ than others so it’s more enjoyable in physical terms, but in musical terms – and that’s what matters – the list is endless.

How do you prepare before a concert?

I don’t really have a set routine, but taking a hot bath if possible is nice for clearing your mind.

Do audiences differ, in different parts of the world?

Yes, absolutely. In the Middle East audiences hear a lot of what I am playing for the first time – which is fascinating, and has its own responsibilities. In Europe, audiences are already quite familiar with some of the music you play and so are listening to enhance or rebuff their interest in the work, or out of curiosity of what your interpretation of it is.

What about your work as a composer?

I compose music that I would love to hear and play in a concert. I have tried to internalise the music that I love the most, presenting it in a way and style that’s individual to me.

Has growing up in Dubai influenced your work?

The career route of becoming a solo instrumentalist/composer was unheard of, which meant I wasn’t aware of what wasn’t possible for me and never approached music with any limitations. I had fantastically inspiring teachers – Jackie Kieswetter

for piano, and Ronald Malanga to bounce musical ideas off.

What about the Dubai Opera plans?

It’s fantastic. Absolutely a step in the right direction. The necessary next step for Dubai is to set up its own symphony orchestra.

What are your favourite holiday destinations?

Kitzbühel, Austria, prettier than a postcard; Barcelona, with the most fantastic energy and buzz; Venice, so ridiculously beautiful; and the Châteaux D’Arnac, France, the most beautiful accommodation in the most picturesque setting.

What music do you relax to while flying?

Our emotions are heightened when flying, so something very light hearted like jazz/ lounge. I mostly play the inflight chess game, or watch TV shows!

What is your favourite music venue in Dubai?

DUCTAC [Dubai Community Theatre & Arts Centre], but it’s high time Dubai got its own purpose-built concert hall. I remember doing a recital at the Burj Al Arab for the opening of Steinway & Sons Middle East: so beautiful, but due to the sheer amount of gold, the acoustic was not easy to work with! dv February 2015

December 2014 witnessed the busiest weekend in the history of one of the world’s busiest international airports – Dubai International (DXB). Its three terminals welcomed a total of 638,317 passengers over three days from 18 to 20 December. The holiday travel hit its peak on 19 December when more than 133,000 passengers, 150,000 bags and over 540 flights from around the world landed at Dubai’s two airports, DXB and Al Maktoum International – Dubai World Central (DWC).

thanks to months of meticulous planning, preparations and close coordination between various government and airport agencies.

Additionally, Dubai Airports (DA), the company that owns and manages both of Dubai’s airports, initiated an awareness campaign comprising simple guidelines to help passengers travel more easily during the peak. These guidelines are not only simple common sense but also go a long way in ensuring that your travel is hassle-free every time – rush or no rush.

■ Aim to arrive early at the airport. It is best to leave a minimum of three hours ahead of check-in and passport control. Take into consideration daily rush hours and available routes in calculating your commuting time to the airport. Be sure to check which airport/terminal you are departing from before leaving home.

■ Take the Dubai Metro to the airport.

Trains run roughly every 10 minutes from DXB Terminals 1 and 3. Services start at

5:50am (5:30am on Thursdays), and stop at midnight (1am on Thursdays/Fridays).

Do note there are no morning services on Fridays, when services start at 1pm. Al Maktoum International is not linked to the metro – however, there are regular buses that link the airport to the Ibn Batutta metro station. You’re allowed up to two pieces of luggage (with one being hand luggage) on Dubai Metro.

■ It’s always difficult to say farewell to loved ones, irrespective of where you are. It’s best to say your goodbyes at home. It will save you time at the airport and prevent crowding at the terminal buildings.

■ Check with the airline in advance for information on your baggage allowance.

If your baggage is in excess of the limit set by your carrier, prepare to be charged for the excess weight. Transferring belongings from one bag to another or running to the ATM for cash prolongs the check-in process for yourself and others waiting in queue.

hoW To GeT yoUr eGaTe CarD? anyone who visits the uae is entitled to get an eGate card. you can apply for your eGate card at any of the DNrD offices, which can be found at DXb or in the Dnata offices on Sheikh Zayed road, Dubai Media City, Dubai International Financial Centre and Jebel ali Free Zone. The applicant has to be physically present at the DNrD office along with his/ her original passport (with at least six months’ validity). after submitting your documents, fingerprint ID will be carried out and your photograph will be taken. The smart gate card costs Dhs200 and is valid for two years.

al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC) is winning travellers’ votes of confidence thanks to its speedy procedures and convenient services. The compact nature of the passenger terminal building means that departing passengers are able to complete check-in and immigration processes in less than 10 minutes.

The airport will soon undergo a uS$32 billion expansion, which will enable the airport to accommodate more than 220 million passengers a year. anticipated to make it the biggest airport project in the world, the expansion will be implemented in two phases over the next six to eight years.

Despite its massive size, the new airport will utilise a radically new design approach to ensure that latest technology and efficient processes will reduce walking distances and cut time spent completing travel formalities, enabling passengers to make fast and efficient connections between hundreds of destinations worldwide.

Remember, irrespective of the allowance, a single unit of baggage weighing more than 32kg will not be accepted at check-in.

■ It is always simpler to pack liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) in bags you are planning to check-in. However, if you have to carry LAGs in your hand luggage, make sure they are in a clear re-sealable plastic bag. Each item should not be more than 100ml and the total content of all items should not be more than one litre.

■ Remember to put anything metal – watch, jewellery, mobile phone, coins, belt – into your hand luggage well before you arrive at the security screening area. This will save time.

■ Beat the queues by checking-in online or using the self-service check-in kiosks in the departures hall. Customers with baggage can make use of the quick baggage drop counters, while those carrying only hand luggage can proceed directly to Immigration.

■ Use the e-Gate card to avoid queuing at passport control, both while arriving and on departure. An eGate card can be obtained from the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigner Affairs (Immigration) for a fee. GDRFA has eGate counters in the departure areas of all terminals.

DUbai DUTy Free shoWs CompassioN Dubai Duty Free (DDF) Foundation donated Dhs5 million to the uae Compassion initiative last month. The relief campaign raised funds to provide winter aid for one million refugees and people in the Levant countries affected by the snowstorm Huda – the worst seen in the Middle east in decades. The campaign was directed by uae President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan and supported by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin rashid al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the uae and ruler of Dubai. Colm McLoughlin, DDF’s executive Vice Chairman, presented the cheque to emirates red Crescent (Dubai Chapter) Manager Mohammed abdulla al-Zarooni during a ceremony.

Since its establishment in 2004, the DDF Foundation has made an immeasurable difference to people’s lives, contributing directly to hundreds of causes such as the rebuilding of Palliyawatta Village in Sri Lanka

following the tragedy of the 2004 tsunami, and the Hand in Hand for Haiti campaign.

DDF has also actively supported various ramadan campaigns launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed, including donations of Dhs3

million each to the ‘Dress 1 Million Needy Children’ campaign in 2013 and the uae Water aid Campaign in 2014. To date, Dubai Duty Free has supported 34 local and 51 overseas charities since its establishment.

1. American free climbers Kevin Jorgeson, 30, and Tommy Caldwell, 36, made history when they successfully reached the summit of the 914-metre-high El Capitan peak in the Yosemite National Park.

Over a period of two weeks the fearless duo scaled the famed Dawn Wall, considered to be on of the most challenging in the world, using their bare hands and aided only by safety harnesses and ropes. They slept in tents suspended from the mountain face.

2. NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope recently identified Kepler-438b, a new planet that could just be a twin to planet Earth!

This rocky planet, some 475 light years away, is said to be 12 times larger than Earth. It orbits its star every 35.2 days and is claimed to be the most ‘Earth-like alien world’ discovered so far.

Kepler-438b is one of eight so-called ‘Kepler’s Hall of Fame’ planets that orbit in their suns’ habitable zones – of these, six orbit stars that are believed to be similar in size and temperature to our Sun. Since 2009 the planet-hunting Kepler Telescope has identified some 15,000 stars beyond our solar system – and 4,000 of these exoplanets have been earmarked for further investigation.
