CELEBRATION TIME An estimated one billion tourists will have travelled worldwide this year according to a report by the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer! The report says that by 13 December a record number of tourist arrivals in a single year will have occurred, breaking last year’s total of 990 million. Receipts from international tourism, including international passenger transport, will reach US$1.2 billion in 2012, equivalent to 6% of the world’s total exports of goods and services. The figures are encouraging, given the challenging global economic climate. Emerging economies are showing the fastest growth. The UNWTO report noted that growth was strongest in Asia, followed by the Pacific, Africa and Europe. In the post-Arab Spring era the Middle East is recording positive results: Tunisia grew by 10% and Egypt appears to be welcoming back more visitors, albeit in numbers below those recorded before the revolution. Worldwide, the countries earning the most from tourism were Hong Kong, the USA, Germany, France and the UK. Meanwhile, in consultancy Cushman & Wakefield’s Winning in Growth Cities 2012-13 report, Dubai was ranked as the 16th top destination for global hotel investment. The number one spot was bagged by London, reeling in the glory of the 2012 Olympics. As the only country in the Middle East to be included on the list, Dubai is said to be showing a growth of over 30% in investments in the hotel sector – reaching US$ 390 million during the period Q4 2011 to Q2 2012. The emirate also placed 15th in the list of Top Cities for Connectivity. This was mainly attributed to the encouraging growth and expansion of Dubai International Airport - the fourth busiest airport in the world in terms of international passenger and cargo traffic. With the opening of Concourse A, the world’s only dedicated A380 facility, early next year Dubai International’s capacity will increase to 75 million. World Parachuting Championships Closing ceremony with Katy Perry and Usher after an exciting week of sporting prowess, the Fai World Parachuting Championships will be brought to a close with an impressive double act at the award ceremony, to be held at Meydan Grandstand and Racecourse. First up is Grammy award winner usher, whose career spans 17 years, so fans will have a chance to hear all his hits, including those from his current album Looking 4 Myself. Expect to hear billboard chart toppers U Got It Bad, U Remind Me and My Boo. Meanwhile, Katy Perry will be performing in dubai for the first time. Video Games Live, Sheikh Rashid Hall, Dubai World Trade Centre, 14 December This is a multimedia concert experience featuring music from the most popular video games of all time. The show combines video footage, solo performers, top orchestras and choirs and unique interactive segments. MC Tommy Tallarico is well known as a legendary video game composer and will also be performing live on guitar. This is a unique experience for families and non-gamers alike. 16

He’s also a well-known bollywood playback singer. He will be performing songs from various films in a two-hour solo performance.

The 4.2 km fun run will begin at burj Khalifa, led by the famous Maya diab bank and Ranjit barot Fusion bank, who will perform at the burj Khalifa steps from 6pm – 9pm. as an added bonus, nearly 1200 girls will perform a traditional Hair dance in the hope of entering the Guinness book of World Records at burj Khalifa Park. Since its launch in 1992, the championship has become a worldwide event and the season sees races in Libreville, Gabon and Cernobbio, italy. KPL Dubai - Season 2 The first of its kind T20 Cricket event, the KPL (Kerala Premier League) dubai, is aimed at boosting the popularity of cricket in the uaE, following the huge success of Season 1. The event will consist of 16 teams, competing to win the coveted winner’s cup. Each team will include a minimum of three players, preferably from different districts of Kerala, with a maximum of two overseas players and the remainder local talent. he 9th edition of DIFF is set to take place between 9 and 16 December, and since its inception seven years ago has grown in impact and significance with each successive year. The weeklong festival brings together international directors, film-makers, writers and actors and serves as a platform for sharing ideas and achieving success in the region. As well as holding premieres of international films, it also showcases documentaries, shorts and cinematic talent from Africa and Asia, in the process tackling subjects rarely touched on in the rest of the world. Sheila Whitaker, Director of the Festival’s International Programme and former London Film Festival Director, is justly proud of this year’s line-up. “From the 65th Cannes film festival which saw Michael Haneke's widely acclaimed Amour scoop the Palme d'Or to Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away, a 3D fantasy film produced by Avatar director James Cameron, this is just a taste of the contemporary world that cinema audiences can celebrate at this year’s Dubai International Film Festival, ” she tells Dubai Voyager. Michael Haneke’s Amour sets the standard of this year’s programme. It’s the Best Foreign Film Oscar front-runner and was a favourite with Cannes viewers from the moment it debuted at the festival. It tells the moving story of Georges and Anne, an elderly married couple whose relationship undergoes the ultimate test of love. Another actor tipped for Oscar success is Marion Cotillard, and Dubai audiences will be able to see her in the powerful and moving drama Rust and Bone from director Jacques Audiard. It sees Cotillard as a whale trainer who loses her legs after an accident. Remarkable performances continue in Director Stéphane Brizé’s A Few Hours Of Spring, about a man just released from prison who discovers that his estranged mother is fatally ill. Meanwhile the Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away is the highly anticipated 3D adventure from film-maker James Cameron. The film guarantees to whisk audiences away on a journey to experience immersive 3D technology and the dreamlike world of Cirque du Soleil. As for local entries, competition is fierce for The IWC Schaffhausen Filmmaker Award, which was launched earlier this year with a cash prize of US$100,000. Cate Blanchett will join the jury to select the winner for the award. The four shortlisted projects are Nothing Doing in Baghdad by Maysoon Pachachi, The Sleeping Tree by Mohammed Rashed Buali, Girls in the Know by Abdullah Al Kaabi and From A to B by Ali F. Mostafa. These feature-length fiction film projects were selected from hundreds of established and upcoming directors from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain. Joining Cate Blanchett on the jury is Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen, Abdulhamid Juma, Chairman of DIFF, Masoud Amralla Al Ali, Artistic Director of DIFF and Olivier Père, General Director of Paris-based Arte France Cinema. Abdulhamid Juma, Chairman of DIFF has said of the award, "We have been overwhelmed with the quality of submissions from a dynamic group

of film-makers who have recognised this incredible opportunity made possible by IWC to help achieve them achieve the ultimate - bringing their script to screen. The GCC continues to be a region rich with film-making potential, and the talented film-makers we have selected this year embody it.” The winner will be announced at a star-studded gala at The One & Only Royal Mirage. Of course, a lot of the action is not just on the big screen but also off it. This year, DIFF will see invitation-only receptions hosted by glamorous gala sponsors including MAC Cosmetics, Moet & Chandon, Harvey Nichols, Layalina and Dubai Studio City. The starstudded Red Carpet Galas follow the festival's screenings. In addition to sponsorship of the Gala Events, MAC will also host the MAC Lounge, a fixture at festival headquarters every year, where female guests are refreshed by the cosmetics giant's expert makeup artists, ensuring film star looks. While the Red Carpet action is the main draw, DIFF has also launched a wide range of awards, such as the Muhr Awards and also the Dubai Film Market – a programme which facilitates cooperation between local film-makers in order to bring scripts to the screens, providing them with industry connections and financial support. The Investment Corporation of Dubai is the title sponsor of DIFF, which is held in association with Dubai Studio City. Dubai Duty Free, Emirates airline and Madinat Jumeirah, home to the Dubai International Film Festival, are other principal sponsors. The Festival is supported by the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority and the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award. Another essential component of the event is undoubtedly its charitable activities. DIFF Chairman Abdulhamid Juma says, “We are honoured to be involved in this prestigious event for another year, continuing our partnership with Dubai Cares and Oxfam. Part of the DIFF remit is ‘Bridging Cultures’ so as the Festival grows, it is wonderful to be able to shine a spotlight on these worthy causes and charities whilst making a measurable, tangible difference to our global community.” News that the Academy Award winning actor Colin Firth and his fashion entrepreneur wife Livia will attend the annual ‘One Night to Change Lives’ charity event under the patronage of UN Messenger of Peace HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, is certainly exciting! The couple, are Global Ambassadors for Oxfam along with Kristin Davis will be among the many international celebrity attendees including Rooney Mara, Amr Waked and Ali Mostafa. The annual black-tie charity evening on 14 December will take place at the Armani Hotel. All proceeds from the exclusive gala dinner and auction featuring one-of-a-kind prizes donated by celebrity Oxfam partners will go to the UAE-based philanthropic organisation Dubai Cares and global development and aid agency, Oxfam. Last year, the charitable event raised over US$1 million through ticket sales while the auction raised money to fund 14 schools in the region, in addition to the support of Varkey GEMS Foundation which funded 10 schools in Pakistan.

he 2nd of December 1971 was the day on which the UK’s treaty expired and the individual sheikhdoms decided to form an independent union. The UAE was at that time a federation of six emirates – Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ajman. The Ras Al Khaimah emirate joined the union one year later. While 2 December is a public holiday it is also a chance to reflect on how far the UAE has come in such a relatively short space of time – evolving from a collection of nomadic tribes to become a hub for trade and travel and a resolutely stable country in the middle of an often turbulent region. The much-cited ‘Spirit of the Union’ was derived from the leadership of the late Sheikh Zayed and carried on by Sheikh Khalifa bin

Zayed Al Nahyan. During his lifetime, the late Sheikh Zayed believed in the generosity and kindness of the people of the UAE. The affection he bestowed on his nation emanated from his faith in humanity and his trust that through selflessness, the people of the UAE would act as one – hence the spirit of union. “The Union lives within me and it is the dearest thing in my whole existence,” he declared. Indeed, Sheikh Zayed’s vision and beliefs were progressive and innovative. He said, “The aim of the Union is not only to set up a constitutional structure under a certain name, an emblem and a national anthem, but also to build a nation with integrated forces and legislative and executive authorities. We seek to build a modern state providing decent living for

all citizens; a state that actually deserves to be a model for other Arab unions.” It’s worth reflecting on this and realising that his vision has become a reality. The Al Ain Airshow will also be part of the UAE National Day celebrations. Scheduled from 30 November – 2 December at Al Ain International Airport, the daily programme features aircraft acrobatics and an activitypacked spectator village which sees crowds of up to 35,000. As the city has just been given the status of an UNESCO Heritage Site because of its rich archaeological and historic treasures, it’s worth making a long weekend of it. ith temperatures nearing perfect and public holidays aplenty on the agenda this month, it’s officially time to hit the beach. And news that several beaches across the emirates have just been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag, an internationally recognized ‘eco label,’ designed to protect and develop beaches around the world, is even more reason to appreciate the natural surroundings. In total 12 beaches and marinas spanning Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Fujairah have been granted the international award by Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF and the Foundation for Environmental Education after meeting a number of strict criteria designed to raise environmental coastal standards. These beaches join a global list of 3,849 beaches and marinas across 46 different countries, from the tropical shores of the Caribbean islands to the rugged cliffs of New Zealand. All Blue Flag beaches are assessed for water quality, environmental management, safety, services and also environmental education and information. With this knowledge, and international guarantee, visitors can indulge and enjoy the pristine sand and clean waters. Taking a copy of Tony Woodward’s Beachcomber’s Guide to the Gulf or Sandy Fowler’s A Rough Sheller’s Guide may well provide further inspiration too.

Internationale – a vast complex comprising an exhibition centre, conference centre and Cineplex. Piano has left his trademarks in the form of red brick, double glass walls, a curved roof and straight lines. One of Le Corbusier’s last works is the Couvent de Tourette, near Arbresle outside Lyon, an entirely concrete Dominican convent. One of the best ways to appreciate the architecture is by cycling around the city. Long before Paris adopted the Velib, Lyon initiated this communal service with their Velo’v – a self-service facility now seen in most capitals around the world. There are 345 pick-up points for bicycles around the town. Once you have wheels, the Presqu’ile (peninsula) between the Rhone and Saone rivers is at your disposal.

2 eAt your wAy round the city. “I know of only one thing that you can do well in Lyon, and that’s eat,” said the novelist Stendhal. Arguably the gastronomic capital of France if not the world, the local delicacies include St Marcellin cheese, saucisson sec (salami) and quenelles – fish

or meat dumplings and boudin noir (black pudding). To eat like a local, head to a neighbourhood bistro or bouchon around 10am and enjoy a snack of sausage, wine, cheese and bread – termed a macon. The Association des Authentiques Bouchons Lyonnais will list the top 20 bouchons serving quality produce. Lunch is likely to be cold cuts, tripe salads and noodle and potato gratin dishes, all washed down with the local vintages. (Le Poelon d’Or is our recommendation.) For more experienced gourmets, reading Paul Bocuse’s ‘Regional French Cooking’ is a must do before visiting the city and the region. The celebrated chef comes from Lyon and the city hosts the world’s top chef competition every year –Le Bocuse D’Or. As for the octogenarian culinary genius himself – he’s recently opened his first design hotel, DockOeust (39 Rue des Docks) which is decked out with Ligne Roset furnishings and not surprisingly is only a few steps away from his Ouest Express restaurant. New chef on the block is Nicholas Le Bec and his sprawling restaurant, Rue le Bec, features a wine bar, bakery and fine food boutique.

1 Admire the Architecture

From the flying buttresses of old Lyon to the modernist covered market of the Halle Tony Garnier, there is much to appreciate for design lovers. Lyon is the gateway to the Alps and as such its history comprises Roman ruins, Renaissance architecture, renovated river fronts and a fast growing neighbourhood of futuristic architecture. The Opera de Lyon by Jean Nouvel is a talking point; he covered the old neoclassical building with a semi cylindrical arch which is now a much loved building with residents. Meanwhile, Renzo Piano is the name behind La Cite dEcEmbER 2012

3 Visit the old town

Le Vieux Lyon is a baffling warren of traboules (covered alleyways) and the former heart of the silk industry. La Croix-Rousse is the centre of the silk industry and the narrow alleyways were once used by the silk workers to transport their precious cargo down to the river barges. Meandering through the old town is hungry work so a stop off at Higgins café for brunch; La Maison Villemanzy is highly recommended. Don’t forget to buy a silk scarf either. The Cathedral of St Jean Baptiste dominates the old town and is decorated with 25 gargoyles, 36 prophets, 36 martyrs and saints and 72 angels! The clock inside is a further talking point and strikes at 12, 2, 3 and 4pm. Sunday is one of the best times to explore this area where you’ll find the secondhand book and magazine market along the Quai de la Pecherie, with works by Lyonnais authors such as Antoine de SaintExupery and Stendhal alongside vintage posters and post cards. Make time to savour the artisanal ice creams too at Terre Adelice. Antique lovers should also make a point of visiting the Cite des Antiquaires (boulevard de Stalingrad) which is home to 150 antique dealers stocking everything from paintings to crockery and glassware.

Hip, trendy and opened in 1999, the Passage Thiaffait on Rue Rene Leynaud is a creative collective or village, formerly a silk workshop, dedicated to Lyon’s up and coming fashion and interior designers. It’s reminiscent of the Montmartre district in Paris (with the same steep staircase streets!). Some 20 designers, amongst them Lionel Bandiera, Pierre Gros and Diane Diaz, all have studio showrooms and the Village des Createurs 34

regularly organize exhibitions, fashion shows and a vintage clothes market in June. For extra street cred, things to bring back from Passage Thiaffait include the eco design bags of Marron Rouge, colourful patterned tights by Marie Antoinette and black and white suits by Morgan Kirch.

The area between Place Bellecour and Cordeliers in the Carre D’Or district is filled with stylish boutiques and there is a wealth of home grown design talent. Charles Guillaud and Lise Tarraud’s boutiques lead the way for epic style ballgowns, wedding dresses and red carpet essentials, but a must-visit for all things silk is Cedric Brochier’s L’atelier de Soierie. Not quite your thing? There are also excellent open air markets on Croix Rousse hill and Quai St Antoine, ideal for seeking out local delicacies. The crowded Marche St Antoine is best for cheeses, bread, fish and oysters. You might be surprised to find out that Lyon also boasts France’s third largest Chinatown (after the two in Paris) which is found in the Guillotiere district. The Supermarche Asie stocks the whole range of Asian and Chinese products and includes an abundant array of exotic fruit and vegetables. Keeping with this theme, you could try Frapanese food as prepared by chef Tsuyoshi Arai, who was awarded a Michelin star for his restaurant Au 14 Fevrier, which he describes as “la cuisine Francaise Made in Japan.”

6 enjoy the lights

Many cities pride themselves on their Christmas lights, but the real luminary in this field is Lyon with its Fete des Lumieres. Held in December, from 8th to New Year, the historic buildings are given a 21st century makeover in one of the world’s greatest

displays of light, art and music. This is the highlight of the city’s cultural agenda, but other must attend annual events include a Festival des Nuits Sonores in May, a Vintage clothes market in June, a theatre festival from June – August and a Biennale of Dance and Contemporary Art held every other September. An added incentive to visiting the tourist attractions of Lyon is by making use of the Lyon City Card which provides free entry to the 21 museums as well as guided visits of all the attractions and access to transport facilities, as well as other reductions over a one/two or three day visit. The card can be acquired at the Tourist Office in Place Bellecour and makes sense for first time visitors.

7 Visit the gAlleries

Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to absorb a lot of visual stimulation on a visit to Lyon. The city is full of galleries, concentrated in the area of Rue Burdeau, where you’ll find everything from painting to illustration and sculpture. You’ll find Galerie Le Reverbere is one of the best and represents photographers such as William Klein and Rip Hopkins. In other areas the Olivier Houg Galerie and Georges Verney-Carron galleries are not to be missed. Meanwhile the Musee D’Art Contemporain presents contemporary art in all its forms – conceptual, video and installation and hosts a Biennale of Contemporary Art every two years. However you can’t leave Lyon without a trip to the Musee des Beaux-Arts; set in a former convent it is quite simply the second most important museum after the Louvre. Aim to spend a few hours here or take a couple of trips to appreciate the Monets, Manets, Cezannes, Bacons and sculpture. The museum also has a luxury restaurant which is in keeping with its impressive ambiance.

8 cinemAtic insPirAtion

The Art Deco mansion which is the Institut Lumiere is a living museum for cinema and photography and is housed in the former home of the Lumiere brothers (who invented motion pictures). In March 1895 Louis Lumiere activated the Cinematographie that he had designed with his brother Auguste and recorded a 50 second film of employees leaving their family’s photo plate factory. You can view this film as well as early film making devices. Next door there is a film theatre which shows international and classic films too.

The traditional idea of the café in France where people met to discuss ideas, the so-called café philosophe, is being kept alive at the Café de la Cloche in Bellecourt. It has old fashioned décor and was opened by a retired professor of philosophy at Lyon university. He regularly hosts literary evenings which are very popular. The Grand Café des Negociants has a strong history too, dating back to 1864. Its neo Louis XV décor with Art Deco additions and Venini wall lights have all served as the backdrop to television shows and broadcasts. After dark, it becomes a jazz club – perfect for night owls.

Happy anniversary! On the eve of dubai duty Free's 29th anniversary, dv catches up with Colm McLoughlin as he reflects on their impressive achievements, sponsorship campaigns and charity initiatives as well as their ambitious future plans. The 29th Anniversary on 20 December is an impressive milestone for Dubai Duty Free. What have you got in store for customers on the day? We started celebrating our anniversary in earnest back in 2003 when we marked 20 years and on that day we offered a 20% discount on a wide range of products. That tradition has continued and we have now settled on a 25% discount offer. The result has been extraordinary and we know that people fly specifically on that day so that they can avail of the offer. Ensuring that the anniversary coincides with the holiday season also ensures that people are ready to shop and to buy gifts. There is usually a highly festive atmosphere in dubai duty Free on the anniversary day: our customers are happy and our staff are caught up in the fun. We have a series of activities on the shop floor on that day, making our customers part of the celebrations, and we usually conduct a draw for a couple of cars in the Finest Surprise promotion and have a Millennium Millionaire draw. We also have a draw for our staff. Have you got a sales target in mind which you’d like to meet on the 29th anniversary? Last year on our 28th anniversary we reached sales of uS$24 million, which was a new daily record and meant that our sales were uS$1 million every hour. That was fantastic and it would be good to think that we can do even more this year, possibly a 10% increase on last year. As a team, what are some of your favourite memories from the past anniversary celebrations? One of my favourite memories revolves around the first year that we marked our anniversary in this way, which was in 2003. That year we 46

celebrated 20 years by offering a 20% discount and had also made a decision that we would donate the entire day’s sales to charity, which we did. We had sales of uS$1.9 million. The reason why this remains in my memory is that, although we did not realise it at the time, this was the start of the dubai duty Free Foundation, which we went on to establish in 2004 under the auspices of H.H. Sheikh ahmed bin Saeed al Maktoum, President of dubai Civil aviation authority and Chairman of dubai duty Free. Since then, the Foundation has done some great work and has helped changed the lives of many children and their families. How do you see the future of Dubai Duty Free developing in future years? in the immediate future, one of the major developments is the opening of Concourse a in the first quarter of 2013 which is hugely significant to the airport and all of its stakeholders. dedicated to Emirates’ a380 fleet, the new Concourse will provide the retail operation with an additional 8,000 square metres of retail space, bringing dubai duty Free’s footprint to over 26,000 square metres across all Terminals. From a retail point of view, the new Concourse will be fantastic and and will enable us to expand current product lines and to introduce some new brands, which will be in the line with our passenger mix. From a staffing point of view, our operation will grow to over 5,000 by the beginning of 2013. Our long term plans are linked to the expansion plans at dubai international airport and at al Maktoum international airport. The capacity of dubai international will reach 95 million with the opening of a fourth concourse and by that time our sales are expected to reach around uS$3 billion.

How have the expansion projects of Dubai Duty Free gone this year – at Hatta Border and in the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel? The Jumeirah Creekside Hotel is the first hotel owned by dubai duty Free and sits very well within our Leisure divison which includes The irish Village, Century Village and dubai Tennis Stadium. The 292 bedroom hotel is absolutely stunning; really unique with unusual characteristics, such as housing the largest collection of original Middle Eastern art in a public setting. The hotel is managed by Jumeirah group who have done a great job in establishing the Jumeirah brand and in delivering excellent customer service and a unique experience. This philosophy is in line with dubai duty Free’s brand philosophy and we are pleased with that fit. Our new shop at the Hatta-Oman border is our first foray into border shops and it is doing well. We are hoping to expand the retail offer in line with the plans for new offices, which should be finalised in the coming year. How has the role of sponsorship accentuated the success of Dubai Duty Free? Sponsorship has been an integral part of dubai duty Free’s marketing strategy since 1983, and it has proved to be a highly successful platform for us to promote dubai as a world-class sporting, leisure and business centre. as well as the dubai duty Free Tennis Championships which attract a massive global audience, generating over uS$350 million worth of television exposure, we also sponsor more than two dozen sporting, cultural and conference events in dubai and overseas and we actively support sponsorships which involve the wider community.

Any new sponsorships ahead which you would like to share with readers? Yes, we are supporting the first World Parachuting Championship Mondial 2012, to be held in dubai from 28 November - 9 december. The event will be held under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Chairman of World Parachuting Championship. We’re sure that the event will receive a huge response from the crowds and i am sure it will be a great spectacle. Can you give us a brief overview of the growth of Dubai Duty Free sales over the past three decades? in our first full year of business our turnover reached uS$20 million. it is incredible to think that this figure was surpassed on our anniversary day last year when sales topped uS$24 million. Terminal 2 opened in 1998 and dubai duty Free opened a retail operation there. Major changes came in april 2000 with the opening of Sheikh Rashid Terminal. This provided the airport and ourselves with much needed scope to grow. Our retail operation, now called Concourse C, covered 5,400 square metres and enabled us to increase our product range and to showcase new and stylish retail design features. all of this was reflected in our sales, which in 2000 reached uS$222 million. in October 2008, the next major development came with the opening of Terminal 3, dedicated to Emirates airline. dubai duty Free now operates a total of 18,000 square metres retail space at dubai international airport and our sales in 2012 will reach close to uS$1.6 billion. Dubai Duty Free scooped the top prize at the Frontier Awards held in the Hotel Martinez in Cannes, where they were announced as the ‘Best Airport Retailer of the Year’ for an unprecedented sixth time. Hailed as the ‘Oscars of the industry’, the Frontier Awards are held to coincide with the annual Tax Free World Association (TFWA) exhibition in Cannes, with this year’s awards ceremony attracting over 500 guests from the global duty free industry. Launched in 1985, the Frontier Awards recognize excellence in the industry with trophies going to winners in 11 different categories following a review of submissions by a panel of international judges. Commenting on Dubai Duty Free’s success on the awards night, H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Dubai Duty Free said: “I would like to extend my congratulations to the management and staff at Dubai Duty Free for winning the Frontier ‘Best Airport Retailer of the Year’ award. “Dubai Duty Free’s repeated success at the Frontier Awards – which remain the industry’s foremost celebration of excellence in travel-retailing – highlights the extent to which it continues to innovate and renew itself as a business,” said David Davies, Editor of Frontier magazine. “Nearly 30 years after it was established, DDF is still wowing our judges with its achievements, so congratulations to Colm McLoughlin and the team!” Dubai Duty Free won its first ‘Best Airport Retailer of the Year’ award in 1985 – at the first Frontier Awards ceremony- and again in 2000, 2001, 2004 and 2007. Dubai Duty Free’s teN moNth sales up by 11% Dubai Duty Free is looking to achieve double digit sales growth for the year as sales up to the end of October reached an impressive Dhs4.71 billion (US$1.29 billion), representing an 11% increase over the same period last year. The latest sales figures put the operation on track for year-end sales of an estimated Dhs6 billion (US$1.6 billion). Commenting on the year to date sales, Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of Dubai Duty Free said: “2012 is shaping up to be a fantastic year and I am pleased that our sale per head, which is around US$49, and our penetration level of close to 50%, continues to be so strong. We are looking forward to a busy couple of months and closing the year with record sales.” The Perfumes category, retained the No. 1 spot as sales rose to Dhs727 million (US$199 million) in the ten-month period. Notable increases were seen in Confectionery which rose by 18% to Dhs377 million (US$103 million) while Electronics showed an 11% increase to Dhs367 million (US$100 million). The Watch category was up by 11% and registered sales of Dhs311 million (US$85 million) and Cosmetics rose by 17% with sales of Dhs299 million (US$82 million). Impressive sales figures have been recorded across all three Terminals for both departing and arriving passengers: Terminal 1 has recorded a 9% increase, while Terminal 2 has shown an impressive 16% increase. Terminal 3, which is dedicated to Emirates Airline, has seen sales grow by 12% while Arrival sales across all Terminals is up by 15%.

t only 29 Nancy Ajram has achieved more than many of us in a lifetime. As a multiple platinum recording artist who began her career at the age of 15,in her native Lebanon, she has released seven studio albums and has been described by Arabian Business, Newsweek and The Oprah Winfrey Show no less, as being one of the most influential personalities in the Middle East. Ajram has put her fame to good use and is a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF as well as the first celebrity ambassador for Anlene, an osteoporosis charity, while she set up her own charity- Jam’iyet Nancy Ajram Al-Khayria that works on collecting and distributing money for the poor in Beirut. Ajram is also the only female sponsor and spokesperson for CocaCola. Dubai Voyager catches up with her to talk about music, health and her love for her family.

How did it all begin? Can you talk us through your rise to fame… As a child I loved to sing – anywhere and everywhere! With the support of my father I released my first studio album by the time I was 15. My real breakthrough happened when I started collaborating with well-known producer Jiji Lamara and I released ‘Akhasmak Ah’ followed by my third studio album, ‘Ya Salam’.

You are often described as one of the most influential personalities of the Middle East. Do you agree? Why? That’s very kind of you! My choice of career has meant I am in recognisable in public but at the same time, I have a husband and a family just like so many women in the region. I want to use my position to help women from a personal and professional point of view.

You music video for Fi Hagat has had more than 27 million hits on youtube. How does this make you feel? Amazing! I’m so lucky that my music has been so well received and I am truly blessed – I never take it for granted that I’m only in this fortunate position thanks to the support of my wonderful fans.

You have such a work intensive schedule, how do you juggle motherhood and your career? I spend as much time as I can with them and 82

fortunately my career means that they can be with me a lot of the time.

You travel a lot, how do you combat the stress of this? I try and remember to set aside time for me as well. I like to incorporate exercise into my everyday life. I sometimes forget that exercising doesn’t only mean pounding out the miles on a treadmill at dawn. I have taken up walking, yoga and dancing. And all of these are social activities, which are so much more enjoyable in my opinion.

Do you ever have any free time? If so, what you do like to do in your ‘spare time’? Spending time with my husband, Mila and Ella or catching up with friends.

The music video for your latest song ‘Super Nancy’ features your girls Mila and Ella. How aware are they of your celebrity status? Would you encourage them to follow your footsteps into the music industry? They are too young to understand the celebrity world so when they are older I will explain that it’s a tough industry but I want my girls to follow their hearts and be happy in whatever career they choose.

Could you tell us more about your role as Middle East Ambassador for Anlene. Why did you decide to take on this role and what does it entail from your side? Osteoporosis is a disease that is severely under-acknowledged in the Gulf. Thirty percent of women aged 25 to 40 in this region are at risk of developing the disease later in life. It’s a painful and debilitating bone disease and as the first celebrity Anlene Ambassador for the Middle East, I’m hoping I can help raise the profile of osteoporosis so women will start to take the disease more seriously. By endorsing Anlene, I hope to increase bone health awareness amongst women in the Gulf and emphasise the importance of looking after your bone health from an early age. I hope to lead by example and show young women (as young as 30) that they can maintain their mobility and quality of life throughout their lifetime, by consuming the right amount of calcium daily, doing weight

bearing exercises and eating a balanced diet. I have two young daughters and when I found out they could be affected if I don’t encourage them to eat a healthy, balanced diet and stay active, it really hit home.

How often do you visit Dubai? My role as an Anlene Ambassador sees me promoting bone health throughout the Gulf. I was in Dubai in October for a flying visit! But I’m very excited that I’ll be back in Dubai early next year for Anlene’s second Move for Bones event – watch out for more details coming soon on Bonehealtharabia.com

Among all the causes you support, which one is especially close to your heart? That’s a really difficult question! They are all important to me; I couldn’t choose. Since I have become a mother of two girls they are my priority in life – I do everything for them. dv
