HOW TO‌ PACK LESS
Start with the suitcase. Brands such as Samsonite and Tumi both offer lightweight luggage in a variety of sizes. If you really want to lighten your load, opt for a compact carry-on size with rolling wheels. If your suitcase is on the smaller side, there is no way to over pack. Make a list or set aside everything you want to take on your trip. Start with the essential clothing and shoes and arrange into categories or activities such as beachwear, sports gear and evening attire along with shoes for each. Next, remove at least one outfit from every pile!
Chances are you will re-wear certain clothing items. To avoid the extra bulk and maximise the usage of each article of clothing, pack versatile pieces such as smart shorts, capri pants and crisp shirts that you can wear for both day and night.

HATTA The JA Hatta Fort Hotel, one of the UAE’s bestloved destinations, is nestled in the majestic Hajar Mountains just an hour’s drive from Dubai. It opened in 1981 and nostalgic touches remain, complementing the modern updates, making for an ideal escape from city life. Around every three months, I get what my husband calls ‘the Dubai wobble’. It has nothing to do with my love of brunches, and everything to do with a sudden and overwhelming need to get out of the city and have a break. Even 24 hours away from normal life is enough to make me feel like a changed woman who doesn’t get stressed at the tiniest thing. Before having a baby these mini-breaks were easy – just throw some clothes in a bag, and off we’d go. But now we have a daughter, and finding somewhere that’s family friendly has proved difficult and often not worth the hassle, but the JA Hatta Fort Hotel seemed to offer the perfect solution. It’s a short drive from home, but far enough to feel like we’re getting away, and lots of activities to keep everyone happy.
The room We turned onto the hotel’s driveway and spotted peacocks immediately! Even though we arrived early, the room was ready and we were checked into a seriously cute chalet – all cosy and wood, plus a cot for Phoebe was waiting for us. With a private balcony boasting views over the lawns and onto the mountains, it was the perfect spot to enjoy a sundowner. There was also a modern bathroom with a giant tub (extra points for Elemis bubbles), sofa, desk and still enough space for a family – and all our luggage. Each chalet can accommodate two adults and two children up to the age of six, which offers great value.
Family friendly There are loads of activities at the hotel, from the lovely spa (thank you husband for treating me to a much-needed massage and some quiet time) to plenty of wildlife to see, as well as off-road driving and archery. Confession: I’m a massive mini-golf fan, so that was the first plan of action – we put Phoebe in the baby carrier and had a husband-wife tournament. To cool off we headed for a swim at The Rock Pool, which is dedicated to families, temperature controlled, and had plenty of loungers and umbrellas for extra shade. The hotel even offers a babysitting service! We booked that for the
evening, so we could have dinner a deux.
Eating and drinking Breakfast and lunch is served in the Café Gazebo restaurant, which overlooks the pool. It’s a really charming spot where you truly feel like you’re on holiday. For dinner we went to Jeema, which is a fine dining restaurant, complete with a pianist and fantastic menu. I enjoyed smoked salmon, then possibly the best curry I’ve had in Dubai, and the staff were lovely. If we were staying a second night I’d be tempted to cosy up in the chalet, put a film on and order room service.

Activities The next morning we went for a walk – the gardens are gorgeous, with so much space for Phoebe to explore on her unsteady feet. You’ll also find outdoor chess, a mini zoo with ducks and goats, camel rides, and a play area to help little ones tire themselves out. There is a lot to do in the surrounding area as well, should you be staying longer, including the heritage village and Hatta Dam, as well as the natural beauty of Fossil Rock.
Added extras I’m hesitant to admit it, especially on a break when you’re supposed to be switching off, but the free WiFi is a fantastic touch. Above all, though, it was the helpful JA staff that made it a weekend to remember, from the warm welcome to helping with our baby at every turn.
The verdict What a wonderful weekend. We returned to normal life a little more tanned and far more relaxed, with plans to return.

PICASSO & MIRO EXHIBITION Over 267 pieces of artwork from two of history’s most renowned artistic figures and cultural icons, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro, is set to arrive in the UAE. Visitors will discover and explore the ways in which the two artists’ work and lives intertwined over their five-decade friendship. MUSIC The top musical gigs to mark in your diary now
nicki Minaj Singer and current queen of rap, Nicki Minaj, is returning to Dubai for a concert on 25 March. The gig will be hosted at a temporarily built venue aptly named The Venue, located at Dubai Outlet Mall. Discover how you can enjoy a breathtaking game of polo It’s widely believed that polo is reserved for the elite – after all, it really is the sport of choice for many a prince and princess, maharaja and maharani, sheikh and sheikha. The name means “head of the shop” in Arabic, and refers to a mixture of the best spices a seller has to offer. Typically they would include cardamom, clove, cinnamon, paprika, coriander, cumin, mace, nutmeg, peppercorn, and turmeric.
Lamb Shanks ServeS four PREPaRation tiME: 15 minutes
IngredIents • 1kg lamb shanks • 4 onions • 2tbs cumin powder • 1 pinch saffron threads • 2tbs saffron powder for colouring • 2tbs smen (preserved butter) • 2tbs salt • 50ml Moroccan olive oil • 5 cloves garlic (peeled) • 2tbs Ras El Hanout • 2tbs water • 2tbs preserved lemon • 100g rice, cooked

method Cut shanks into large pieces. Peel the onions and cut into very thin slices. 3 Place the meat in a large saucepan, cover with onions, and add saffron threads, saffron powder and smen. Cook for 15 minutes until the shanks are browned. stirring well from time to time. 4 Add cumin powder, moroccan olive oil, ras el hanout and garlic. Chermoula Sea Bream ServeS four PreParation time: 20 minutes

InGredIenTs • 15g coriander leaves • 8g mint leaves • 4g parsley leaves • 2g red chilli, chopped • Juice of 2 lemons • 2g coriander seeds • 2g cumin seeds • 50ml olive oil • ½ clove garlic • Salt and pepper to taste
• 120g zucchini • 120g carrot • 120g broccoli • 120g cauliflower • 720g sea bream • 10g butter • 10ml olive oil • 80g new potatoes
eQuIPMenT Pot, pan, grill, chopping board, knife, mortar and pestle, blender, scale, serving plate and utensils.
MeTHod 1 Place coriander, mint and parsley in boiling water for 15 seconds and then move straight into iced water. once cool, squeeze all water from the herbs using a cloth.

Garnish with some parsley and half a lemon.

what do You think can be expected fRoM poRtugal in fRance this suMMeR at the euRopean chaMpionships? Portugal has always had a very competitive team in the European Championships and World Cup. We have produced some amazing individual talent, but to win these tournaments you need a collective team effort and depth in every position. That is why teams such as Germany consistently produce strong results in these competitions. Football in the end is a team game and therefore you need a consistency in strength as a whole unit including the coach, support team and those players sitting on the bench. I will be supporting the Portuguese team and believe they have the ability to go a long way in the upcoming European Championships.

A greater separation is developing between the leading clubs in their leagues due to the financial power they have over the other clubs. It is becoming more difficult for the less financially charged clubs to be competitive in their league with only three to four teams able to challenge for the League Title.

As head of JA’s Tennis Academy, the tennis ace is no stranger to meeting the most famous faces in sport, including Thomas Enqvist and Roger Federer. Read on below as the professional tennis coach shares his photos and memories on meeting these top players.
THOmaS EnqviST In addition to being a great champion of the highest level, Thomas is also heavily involved in charity events and tennis promotion, especially for children around the world. I was fortunate enough to work with him on three separate occasions for JA events. It was very helpful on a personal front as he gave me a lot of very practical advice and useful insight into working with children. He is a regular hotel guest and will soon return for more JA events.

RogeR FeDeReR I was lucky enough to meet Roger during the IPTL tournament that took place here in Dubai. I was also able to have dinner with him one evening, which was a wonderful experience. He is a very humble and friendly person who willingly shares advice on how to approach the game of tennis at the mental level. He also revealed that his strength and fitness were the elements that have allowed him to have such a long career.
Denis istomin I met Dennis at the JA Tennis Academy in December last year while he was preparing for the Australian Open. He was visiting the Emirates to play in the World Championships and stopped by the JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort to train with his national team. He was incredibly approachable and took the time to sign autographs for fans and guests. Denis also told me that his number one trick to improving his backhand is to work hard on the position of his feet (side ways) approaching the ball. This technique ensures the body does not loose balance during the movement of the arms which helps the direction of the ball.

If I were to give a player advice, it would be to follow a pattern of behaviour similar to champions such as Jonas. In fact, Andy Murray chose him as a coach which ultimately saw him grow and improve throughout 2015.

1. Alignment Trying to aim at a target that is 150 or 200 yards away can be really difficult. To help better align myself to my target, I always pick an old divot or darker patch of grass that is just in front of my ball and in line with my intended target. You will find that it’s much easier to aim at an interim target as opposed to a flag that is a few hundred meters away. Do this the next time you play and you will find that you hit more fairways and
hit your approach shots much closer to the hole.
2. Towel Drill Lots of golfers really struggle to get their arms and body working together during their swing. A great exercise to help this is to place a towel under your armpits and practice swings while keeping the towel in place. Your golf swing will become a lot more connected as the arms and body start to work as a team. Once you have made
a few practice swings try hitting a few shots away using a tee peg. It will feel strange at first, but with a little practice and perseverance you will soon start to see the benefit of this drill.
3. Head movement A common problem amongst amateur golfers is to move their head while putting – this usually happens before they have finished their stroke. This will cause a player to miss their putts and also a deceleration
through the hitting area, meaning they tend to leave the majority of their putts short of the hole. A really simple drill to combat this is to place a coin under your ball and focus on seeing the coin after you have struck the putt. As a result, you will stay still during your stroke, which will lead to better contact as well as helping you to complete your action as opposed to decelerating through the hitting area. The two wins in the European tour have been the most important to me. The first shot 11-underpar final round of 60 was an extraordinary achievement and the lowest recorded round on a European Tour. My big win at the Dubai Desert Classic also helped catapulted my success and has allowed me to play against the best players in the world.

HOW DO YOU STAY GREEN IN THE UAE? In the past it has been difficult but things are improving notably. For instance organic food, which used to be extremely hard to obtain, is now being grown here and recycling, which didn’t exist here until recently, is now common place.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST PRESSING ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES FACING THE UAE? Air pollution is the most obvious – an unfortunate mix of sand dust, construction, traffic and searing heat all conspiring to create a blanket of dust covering the country, particularly in summer.
In winter it is notably better. But the biggest issue facing the UAE, and indeed the region, is water shortages. Yes, the UAE desalinates much of its drinking water but desalination is the most expensive way to produce water. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TO A UAE RESIDENT LOOKING TO PLAY AN ACTIVE ROLE IN IMPROVING THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT? I think it’s a matter of slowly trying to change attitudes and living by example, such as actively buying local produce, conserving water, reducing the monumental waste produced and slowly curtailing consumerism.

How long Have you been working at Ja resorts & Hotels? I joined the company back in 2006. How did you initially get tHe Job? JA Resorts & Hotels actually approached me while I was studying at The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management in Dubai. How would you describe your role witHin tHe Hotel? I help the needs of guests and ensure they have a memorable stay in the hotel and make the most out of their time in Dubai. At JA Resorts & Hotels, we work together as a team and it really feels like a big family. can you tell us a few of your favourite areas witHin tHe Hotel? My favourite part of the hotel would have to be the lobby, as I think it’s the heart of the hotel and the first area guests see when they walk through the door.

I would highly suggest that guests take time to witness the Heritage Village, a beautiful spot offering a different perspective on how people in Dubai used to live.
