Located within a fortress-style building, ust five minutes drive away from JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort, the JA Shooting Club is a specialised activity centre built to strict international safety standards.

HEART OF THE SEA JA Resorts otel s aldives-based marine biologist Stacy allaby reports on the biggest issues facing the marine world and how she and her team at JA anafaru are working to generate awareness and restore life in the waters y far the biggest issue facing marine life and coral reefs is climate change. f course, you have the aspect of thermally induced bleaching that leads to coral mortality and loss on a massive scale.

Unfortunately, aldives is already under bleaching watch for 2017 and it s something m keeping a very close eye on through the US ational ceanic and Atmospheric Administration s Coral Reef Watch software, which utilises Google Earth and satellites to record sea surface temperatures and issue bleaching warnings all over the world. leaching has been reported on the Great arrier Reef since January and the problem has spread over the last few months throughout the ndo-Pacific region, ndian cean, and the Eastern and Southern Pacific.

This year s event is already being classed as a mass-bleaching event. Sadly, it is also the first time in history there has been two consecutive years of mass bleaching, something that wasn t predicted to happen until 2050, so it has arrived 30 years earlier than expected.

Apart from lobbying for greener power sources, government environmental legislation changes, and increased availability and affordability of renewable energy sources, there isn t too much we can do directly to stop this and decrease the temperatures of the ocean. What we are doing (and what m sure every reef-based marine biologist is doing) is trying to build up coral cover while maintaining diversity of species and individual colonies that have displayed resistance to thermal uctuations and increases.

At JA Manafaru we are constantly working to do something about these environmental issues. In February we opened Seatopia – an area within the resort where guests can come to learn more about the marine environment

For the aldives, this means targeting only certain species for gardening and restoration pro ects as some species that once thrived in shallow reefs here are now only found below depth of 12 metres.

Going hand-in-hand with increasing sea surface temperatures are increased instances of coral disease due to outbreaks of corallivorous reef animals such as Drupella snails and crown-of-thorns starfish (C TS), increasing strength and severity of storms due to elevated heat energy in weather systems and changes to natural reproductive cycles for plankton and fish, which has consequences throughout marine food webs and disrupts the ecological balance of the marine environment. You can easily see how one small change in the environment and climate can completely destroy an entire ecosystem.

The next biggest issue is probably pollution, and in particular, plastic pollution. n average eight tonnes of plastic enter the ocean on a yearly basis and this causes complete havoc in the environment. think everyone is familiar with scenes of larger pieces of plastics choking dolphins and turtles – sharks and whales are also getting caught in various fishing nets and plastics. owever, the ma or problem today is microplastics. n the natural environment, plastic never breaks down we have specifically designed and formulated it so that the material lasts an incredibly long time. When plastic finds its way into the ocean, it gets broken down into smaller and smaller pieces through wave action and

degradation due to UV light. Plankton and small uvenile fish then consume these microscopic particles and the toxic chemicals loaded into plastic enter the marine food chain.

As you move up the food chain, various plastic-borne toxins build up in the body tissues of the fish, causing issues with infertility, growth and hormone imbalances. umans are at the top of this food chain and these toxins have been shown to also have the same effect on our bodies. This will become a huge issue particularly in countries that rely on fish as their sole source of protein (usually due to traditional beliefs and customs) and for the world s fishing economy.

Currently, there are five ocean gyres dubbed garbage patches in the world s oceans ( orth Pacific, South Pacific, ndian cean, orth Atlantic and South Atlantic). The natural direction of ocean currents has gathered plastic debris and trash together and the garbage patch currently sitting in the orth Pacific has a surface area greater than the si e of Texas.

This is only the beginning of the problem as not all of the trash and plastic debris oats at the same level in the water column, so what we see from the surface is ust a drop in the ocean (pardon the pun).

Unfortunately now plastic compounds have even been found in the body tissues of animals living in the ariana Trench in the Pacific, long considered to be the last place where plastic had not reached. uch is being done around the world to try to combat and clean up the oceans and new innovations are constantly being mentioned in the news and getting funding. The issue is that while you can easily go out and pick up large pieces, the scale of the problem is far too great now and it would take eets of boats hundreds of years to clean.

Removal of the smaller particles without harming marine life is the main issue. A Dutch teenager, oyan Slat, has developed the most promising method of cleaning the oceans and attempting to rid the marine environment of plastic. is innovation is basically a huge boom that oats on the surface of the water and pushes plastic and trash into a central collection point where it is compacted and can be removed.

At JA anafaru we are constantly working to do something about these environmental issues. n February we opened Seatopia – an area within the resort where guests can come to learn more about the marine environment. t s where m based primarily, when m not in the water of course, and

As for combatting bleaching, am directly trying to increase the coral cover and diversity on the house reef through gardening and transplantation.

Thankfully, we have a lot of established colonies on frames around JA anafaru that survived last year s bleaching so they are prime candidates for further fragmentation and transplantation onto the house reef. Currently, we are only using frames, but m hoping that within the next few weeks we will have a rope coral nursery also installed nearby Coral Jetty in front of akuni restaurant at the resort.

Coral fragments have shown to have greater survival and growth rates when grown on ropes and it will also eliminate the need for building new frames, although m still currently recycling those that were put into the water by Sea arc when they were based here.

This is a great opportunity for guest interaction where our visitors can adopt a coral frame for 0 (solely covers the cost of materials for construction, man hours and service charge), plant their own corals and directly assist us with reef restoration and conservation. The frames will then be tagged with their name and the date of planting, and will send them updates on how their corals are doing and when they have been transplanted.

Gardening activities will now only focus either on colonies that are currently in the nursery or corals of opportunity (colonies that have been damaged or broken off from the substrate) so as not to further stress existing colonies and for them to remain as healthy as possible, directly benefiting the overall health of the reef. m also currently in the middle of developing a longer-term coral restoration programme here using Reef alls as the basic concept. m hoping that will be able to make these all in house (because how hard can mixing concrete be). owever, there will be a testing period to determine if the mixture of the concrete is correct and the concrete is strong enough to withstand oceanic forces. m currently sourcing the various additives needed for the concrete with the assistance of engineering and purchasing. The Reef alls will provide a bare substrate on the house reef free from any fouling organisms that coral can readily settle on and they will be used for transplantation of mature colonies from the nursery.

P neutralised concrete is used in construction to give the corals the best chance of growth before any other fouling organisms take hold, and the shape of the structure itself offers a micro habitat on the reef for various creatures. At the moment m concentrating on the section of house reef between Coral Jetty and the 500 series water villas as phase one for this pro ect, but it has massive future scope.

Depending on future plans for airport development at oarafushi, if the government wants to reclaim land from the sea, resulting in the destruction of corals, the Reef alls could then be incorporated into the pro ect. This is a long way off yet but it would be a great way for JA anafaru to play an active part in reef conservation, which helps to maintain the biological and genetic diversity of aa Alif atoll.

Drupella snails are plucked by myself by hand and removed from the reef completely. owever, they are not so much of an issue apart from directly after bleaching events.

Unfortunately we have to do this from time to time (we are planning to go over the next few days) but it is necessary maintenance to prevent the corals from being consumed and the in ection method is the safest method for divers, almost completely eliminating the chances of being stung.

The fight against ocean pollution in terms of trash and plastic is something do on a constant basis and m always picking items up whenever see them in the water. know the dive team also do this, but recently they have been encountering a number of turtles entangled in nets and ghost fishing gear, which they have freed. The turtles are now diving correctly and have not needed any further medical attention.

For nternational Coastal Cleanup Day, we went to the local island of olhadhoo where guests volunteered time from their vacation to help the local community clean their beaches.

Earth our was in late arch and to celebrate we had an acoustic music set on the beach with candles and a bonfire. Candlelight dining was offered in the restaurants with all lighting being turned off for the hour.

AVOCADO WITH POACHED EGG, DEHYDRATED BEETROOT AND BABY SPINACH

INGREDIENTS ½

METHOD 1 Gently toss the avocado in a bowl with the beetroot, spinach, olive oil, ha elnuts and lemon uice. Season with ground black pepper and set aside.

2 To poach the eggs, heat a large pan of water until it bubbles gently. Crack an egg into a cup, then slide the egg into the water, lowering the cup as close to the water as possible. Using a dessertspoon, gently fold any stray strands of white around the yolk. Repeat with the remaining eggs. Cook each egg for two to three minutes, then remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper.

METHOD 1 Using a medium si ed soup pot, heat a dri and cook the onion and garlic until soft.

SALMON FILLET

INGREDIENTS

METHOD 1 Preheat the pan and season well with salt and pepper, heat the oil making sure your oil is hot before placing the fillet in the pan. Let it cook until you see a golden brown crust forming at the edges.

2 Flip the fillet and cook for ust two minutes more, rest for two to four minutes before serving with the pea pur e.

3 n a medium saut pan start the shallot in a small amount of olive oil until tender and sweet, add garlic and cook about a minute or until aromatic.

4 Transfer shallots and garlic to a food processor with the peas, Parmesan and Âź cup of stock, process until smooth while dri ling in olive oil.

OLIVIA COWAN We sit down for a one-on-one with golf s rising star At ust 21, when many of her peers are still studying or preparing to graduate, livia Cowan is already well into a career as a key player on the golf scene, raking in wins and travelling around the world to take part in some of the sporting world s top tournaments.

The German-born player first found her footing on the greens aged ust three with a bag of ickey ouse clubs in tow. Since turning pro in July 2015, livia has gone on to qualify for the US pen, in addition to ranking within the top ten in both China and Spain.

The JA Resorts otels-sponsored player was recently in Dubai where she stayed at JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort. Ahead of a busy day spent practising on the resort s newly renovated course, we spent the morning with livia to find out about her ourney to the greens, her great success along the way and ambitious goals for the future.

Where were you born and raised? omberg in Germany, but we moved to England for a year when was two years old. y accent is very ritish and always speak English at home, but ve lived in Germany for nearly my whole life.

A lot of people always ask me if consider myself German or English, so like to say m both. never comment when asked which football team support, especially when the two countries are playing against each other.

How often do you get to come to Dubai? try to come as often as can – it s incredible here and it s a great place to practise. We have a tournament in December and then we have another tournament in Abu Dhabi. Last year came three times, so need to try and come more often this year.

When were you named a JA Resorts & Hotelssponsored player, and what did it mean to join forces with the company? t was at the start of last year. know JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort is an ama ing resort and they are great sponsors. first met the team in Dubai when got invited to the mega Dubai Ladies asters

– had ust turned pro in July that year and then got an invite for the asters tournament. stayed here at the hotel and met the team at the opening ceremony and they were all so nice. guess they liked how played and wanted to support me, so m very grateful for that.

How often do you visit the greens at JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort and what makes it a great course to play on? haven t actually played on the newly revamped greens yet, so m excited t looks really good. The course is quite tight so you have to be straight it s a challenging course and a beautiful layout.

What triggered your interest in golf. We heard that your father was a pro golfer?

Yes, my dad was a pro, so he kind of made me play started very early at the age of three with my ickey ouse clubs. was really into it, my parents couldn t get me off the course – ust wanted to hit more and more balls. started playing tournaments at around the age of eight then went into the national team at 15. think knew from the age of 14 that this was what wanted to do, become a pro and start my career in golf.

Did you only play golf growing up or were you also keen on other sports? also used to play tennis as my uncle arry Cowan was a tennis pro. e played professionally and he is now a commentator on S Y. loved riding as well and wish could still do that but my parents say need to be careful in case fall down and hurt myself. know you can ride here at the JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort and every time come here want to try it – ve also seen camel riding on the beach a few times. need to do that.

What have you always loved most about golf? love that the sport is outdoors as you never really know what s going to happen. The weather could change in a few hours. You could play in totally different conditions, which is sometimes unfair. also get to see different places all the time and y everywhere – have travelled to so many different countries and m only 21. You get to make a lot of friends, unlike in tennis where you re directly against one another.

During your travels have you become good friends with any of the other golfers?

Yes, have, you re generally friends with the people from your country, but have become friendly with other rookies from all countries on the tour.

As a young golfer what piece of advice has affected you? used to always get so emotional about every shot and if made a bad shot would think, h no, this hole is gone and it s going to ruin my score. y mum always said, You can t change it and hit every shot perfectly, you re going to have a bad shot on the round so forget it and try to save it. ove on, try not to think about

it and instead think shot to shot, and don t think ahead. So that has always stayed with me.

Who are some of the players or athletes who have affected your career? don t have a favourite golf player as every single player has their own thing. They are all so good – it s hard to pick ust one. ut do admire Seve allesteros, he has the same birthday as me so that must mean something. e is one of the best golfers to have ever lived. e knows how to play the game and so many different shots.

How do you prep physically and mentally ahead of an important game? entally, m a pretty relaxed person. don t want to set the bar too high so try to chill and not think about the game too much.

And then when m actually on the course start thinking more about what m going to do.

Physically, never used to do much fitness for golf. t only really started when went into the national team. was still one of those players who thought, hate fitness, don t like doing it, but definitely started to do more in the last year as it does help, especially with concentration.

What are some of your favourite ways to stay in shape or keep fit? try to go ogging a lot it helps me with concentration when m walking for five hours on the golf course, but it s not my favourite thing in the world. At the moment m doing a lot of exercises for tummy and back to get more in shape. m not as strong in those areas so m trying to get those up so can hit the ball farther. also use a weighted medicine ball, doing throws back and forth in a golf swing to get faster.

Generally, I want to get the most out of my career and always have fun playing the game and never lose that

What have been some of the highlights of your career thus far? n my amateur career won Luxembourg at 14, which was my first win. From there won the Ladies and Girls German Championships, followed by the Spanish and Portuguese Championships, which was in the same year that turned pro. came fifth in the ritish Ladies and third in the ritish Girls, so those were the highlights from my amateur career.

The pro tournaments won were the three Access games on the Access Series tour, two of which while was still an amateur, and also qualified for the US pen last year – that was an ama ing time.

You have already achieved so much. What are you looking forward to in 2017 and can you tell us some of your aims for the season ahead? y goals are to get a lot of top tens and to win a tournament – was close last year when came fifth in China and seventh in Spain. know can do it it s ust one more step. opefully, if play well enough and get enough points, the Solheim Cup could be my biggest goal.

Overall, what do you hope to achieve in your career? definitely want to get onto the LPGA. t s the biggest tour for women s golf. Generally, want to get the most out of my career and always have fun playing the game and never lose that.

ED JONES Dubai-born Ed Jones won the 201 ndy Lights championship before making the move to the ndyCar Series this year.

We meet the talented driver to discuss his career and find out what lies ahead You were born and raised in Dubai. How often do you visit now?

Yes, being born and raised in Dubai makes it very much my home, so it s always nice to be back as much as can. ve been based in iami for the last two years during my season, but then m usually in Dubai for the off-season.

Did growing up in Dubai impact your career choice at all? loved karting growing up and it was initially ust for fun, it never got really serious until my mid-teens. owever, do believe the whole attitude in Dubai, with respect to striving for the best, has encouraged me to take on racing and inspired me to be in the position m in today.

When did you start racing? started with karting at the age of four, actually, at the Jebel Ali art Track, which makes my relationship with JA Resorts otels so close to home and gives special relevance to my racing.

Who was your sporting hero as a young racing enthusiast?

Growing up watched a lot of Formula 1 and ichael Schumacher was the man dominating the sport, so he was always an idol. also respect and love to watch a lot of boxers as find their mentality and attitude similar to ours in many ways.

What racing advice has always stuck with you? feel the most critical advice had as a young driver was to listen and take in every piece of advice and help that was given. was lucky to have a great mentor who brought me a long way. think it s very easy when you get frustrated in sport to keep listening and remain calm. owever, you must constantly remind yourself that everyone in your circle is there to help and also make you succeed.

How do you prepare ahead of a big race?

There s a huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes from the physical side to mental. A lot of gym work is required to keep fit and be strong enough for the long races and not lose concentration. ost of the races are around two hours with forces up to 5g in the corner, making it critical to be strong enough in order to not only keep your performance up, but also to reduce mistakes. n the mental side we work a lot on visualisation, as track time is so limited these days. Dealing with pressure, especially under qualifying situations makes a huge difference. Even the smallest implications of being too tense or loss of concentration, while racing at speeds of up to 240mph, are magnified massively.

We also spend a lot of time on simulators as their relevance has increased considerably. They are very accurate and help the drivers prepare for a race weekend as well as helping engineers decide on setups to use.

What have been some of your biggest wins to date? would say the ndy Lights Championship in 201 , which has led me to ndyCar for this coming season.

Race wins such as the Long each Grand Prix in 2015 are very memorable. also won the European Formula 3 pen Championship in 2013 before my move to America.

Do you think racing is still as exciting as it once was with the increased regulations?

enhance the sport in many ways. f course, they are always striving to increase safety, which can have some adverse affects on the racing. owever, in the US, and specifically ndyCar, the tracks and rules are a lot more old-school and create exciting racing with there being much smaller margins for error than the likes of Formula 1.

Who are some of the other up-and-coming British drivers on your radar?

There are many ritish drivers on the rise as there has been for a long time. At the moment a close friend and old teammate of mine named liver Rowland races in GP2 and looks to be on the brink of F1. opefully he can have a good year.

Landon orris is another younger driver who m sure will be up there very soon heading into Formula 3 this season.

Where would you place Dubai on the racing landscape, and do you consider it a leading destination for the sport?

Dubai has grown massively with motorsport since started. t has some of the best facilities for racing but it will still take time to grow into one of the leading motorsport destinations.

What do you think is the best track in the world?

For me the ndianapolis 500 is the best race in the world. t has so much history and with the 100th running of the race in 201 it had the largest attendance of any sports event in history. The atmosphere is like nothing else and can t wait to be racing there in ay.

What are your plans for the coming season?

After coming off a winning season it s always easy to push expectations too high for the next one. oving into the pinnacle of motorsport in the US with ndyCar is a dream come true. will try my hardest to learn as much as can early on in the season to achieve some podiums. think if we can do that it will be a very successful debut year.

What was running through your head when you were first offered the role?

Pride mainly and fulfilling a lifetime dream to captain my country. t is such a great honour and one that will always stay with me.

Can you share some of the challenges you’ve faced along the way and perhaps what the role has taught you most? had been vice captain to Andrew Strauss but not really ever captained a team before, so to learn on

Some of the English players refused to tour Bangladesh over security fears. Why was that and in your opinion was it reasonable? n fairness it was only two players out of a squad of 1 , so the ma ority were prepared to tour.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and some have experienced incidents in Asia before, so perhaps they were nervous in case anything similar happened again. ost would go anywhere to play for their country so it was not really an issue.

Why has England struggled in Bangladesh and India against spin bowling?

We are ust not used to those conditions. n England it s green and pitches are bouncy and quick, whereas over there they are slow and low and spinners play a vital role – naturally as they learn their cricket on such surfaces they have excellent players who bowl spin well and know how to bat best on those pitches.

I have batted for hours on end and so every ball requires full concentration, otherwise one mistake and it is all over

You recently stayed at the JA Palm Tree Court (JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort) in Dubai. What was the reason for your trip and what did you enjoy most about your time in the resort?

had a wonderful stay recently with my family. y wife and our two young kids ew over from the U and oined them from ndia when there was a break in the recent Test series. t was so lovely to get away from cricket and be able to relax with my family in the fantastic surroundings of the hotel and grounds. Wonderful service and superb facilities meant for a great stay, so thank you to everyone

Do you think England can win the next World Cup? Absolutely, especially as it s in England so we will be used to the conditions and will have had more time to perfect this new style of play that the oneday team is playing.

What advice has helped you most when it comes to improving your game? t sounds a bit boring and obvious but really focus on one main thing to help improve or sustain my game – concentration. As you will know ve batted for hours on end and so every ball requires full concentration, otherwise one mistake and it is all over.

Who are some of the players you most admired growing up and also in the current game?

Graham Gooch is my mentor and have always respected him. ike Atherton for his concentration levels. Currently, you have to be impressed with Virat ohli and David Warner, who seem to be scoring hundreds for fun

What has been the most memorable match of your sporting career?

Winning any of the Ashes series has to be the top one as part of the team. Personally, scoring all those runs in Australia to help us win the 2010 11 Ashes.

What are your future goals?

To score loads of runs and help England win every match.
