Finding My Purpose, One Paw at a Time

By Rissa Howland November is all about giving thanks, so I wanted to dedicate this article to someone who has made a huge impact in my life and career.

Not only do I love writing informational pieces about our furry, four-legged friends, but I also have the privilege of working alongside them every day. Since childhood, I’ve always been fascinated by animals — especially dogs. Over the years, I worked in retail, customer service, and even as an acid specialist in a laboratory, but I always found myself unfulfilled.

My work ethic was strong, but my heart longed for something meaningful — a career that aligned with my passion.

That’s when I took a step back and asked myself: What do I truly love? The answer was simple — animals. I applied at PetSmart, hoping to train dogs, but was instead hired as a pet care associate, caring for small animals, reptiles, and fish. It was a step in the right direction, but I quickly realized advancement wasn’t likely.

Determined to grow, I began

searching for a place that would truly invest in my potential.

Then came the moment that changed everything.

While job hunting one afternoon, I stumbled across an ad for a privately owned dog training facility called Citizen K9 Dog Training & Agility LLC. They were hiring kennel staff.

I visited their website — and was instantly captivated by the owner and head trainer, Brandy Eggeman.

Her story amazed me: raised among German Shepherds, with over 30 years of dog training experience, 19 years in search and rescue for the State of Virginia, and even two years in England with Dartmoor Rescue.

Brandy also worked with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children as a canine handler, collaborated with law enforcement, helped rehabilitate rescue dogs, authored an awardwinning training book, and served as an Army veteran.

I knew immediately: this was where I wanted to be.

Brandy noticed my determination and told me, “I don’t usually hire people without experience — but I wanted to give you a chance.”

Those words stuck with me. I promised I wouldn’t let her down.

I worked tirelessly — cleaning kennels, assisting with boarding dogs, and observing training sessions. Eventually, Brandy invited me to sit in on one of her obedience classes. I watched her teach with patience, precision, and passion. She became my mentor, my inspiration — my hero.

Brandy saw my potential and invested in me. She enrolled me in Dog Psychology and Body Behavior courses and helped me become First Aid and CPR certified for both animals and humans.

That invitation changed everything. I fell in love with agility work. After a few months, Brandy offered me her agility trainer position — a huge honor.

She warned that it would take time to build clientele, but I was ready for the challenge. Slowly but surely, people began to sign up, and I found my rhythm as a trainer.

Just when everything seemed perfect, life took an unexpected turn — Citizen K9 closed its local facility. It wasn’t just the loss of a job; it felt like losing my second home.

I owe everything I’ve learned to Brandy and her daughter, Brianna. They believed in me when I was still finding my way.

Brandy didn’t have to take a chance on me — but she did.

And because of that, I found my place in the dog world.

After a few follow-up calls, I was offered a working interview.

This honey-glazed acorn squash is a perfect dish to celebrate the season. It’s sweet, savory, and beautiful enough to be the star of your table — whether you serve it as a side or enjoy it as a meal on its own.

And because no fall feast is complete without something tart and festive, I’ve included my mother’s famous Cranberry Relish recipe. It’s bright, flavorful, and pairs perfectly with the creamy Brie and golden squash.

Now, before we start — let’s get happy! I truly believe that cooking with joy makes everything taste better. So turn on your favorite music, do a little kitchen dance, and maybe whisper a quick word of gratitude. That’s my secret ingredient every single time.

What you will need: • 1 acorn squash, halved and seeds removed • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 4 ounces Brie cheese, sliced • 2 tablespoons honey • Salt and pepper to taste • ½ cup cranberry relish (see recipe below) • ¼ teaspoon fresh thyme Directions: 1. Preheat your oven to 400°F. 2. Brush the cut sides of the squash with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.

Brie slices inside each squash half.

Let the cheese melt and get creamy.

7. Spoon ¼ cup cranberry relish into each half and sprinkle with fresh thyme.

8. Serve warm and enjoy the perfect bite of sweet, tart, and savory goodness!

Mom’s Infamous Cranberry Relish: This vibrant, zesty relish is a holiday classic in our home — and it couldn’t be easier to make!

What you will need: • • • • • •

1 (1 lb) package fresh cranberries 1 large orange (use half of the peel) 1½ cups sugar 1 family-size package Black Cherry Jell-O ½ cup boiling water ½ cup chopped pecans

3. Place the halves cut-side down on a baking sheet and roast for 30 minutes, until tender.

We become the planners, the organizers, the chefs, the shoppers, the emotional anchors for everyone else.

The holidays may sparkle on the surface, but behind the scenes, they can leave many of us running on fumes, overfunctioning, under-resting, and silently wondering why the season of gratitude feels so exhausting.

If you’ve ever ended a holiday gathering feeling depleted instead of fulfilled, you’re not alone. For women in perimenopause and menopause, this time of year can be especially draining. The combination of hormonal shifts and heightened expectations is a perfect storm for stress, fatigue, and emotional overload.

But here’s the truth: gratitude and giving don’t have to come at the cost of your wellbeing.

The Season of Becoming: Why Your Next Chapter Doesn’t Need Permission November always feels like a month with layers. The air cools, the colors shift, and everything around us whispers, “Slow down.

Reflect. Become.” But if you’re anything like me, slowing down has never come naturally. I’m a builder, a doer, a person who wakes up with ten tabs open in my mind and about five plans in motion. My friends call it ambition; social media calls it being a boss babe, my grandma called it drive. Either way, I’ve learned that when life starts to get quiet, the noise inside me gets louder and that’s exactly where transformation hides.

The Pivot Point

There’s a moment subtle but seismic when you stop trying to fix your life and start becoming the person who no longer needs to. That’s the pivot. Mine came on a random Tuesday morning while putting on my makeup. I wasn’t in a boardroom or at a major event just me, my reflection, and the quiet truth that I’d been surviving on autopilot. I had every reason to feel accomplished: multiple businesses, a magazine I love, a family that lights up my heart.

But underneath it all, there was a whisper: “You’ve been building For years, I thought perseverance everything except yourself.” So I meant pushing harder. I believed started small. Legacy in Motion My daughter, Tateonna, is my greatest teacher in this. She reminds me daily that joy isn’t a reward; it’s a choice. That presence matters more than perfection. And that love, when rooted in authenticity, can heal

generations. She has taught me that legacy isn’t just what we leave behind it’s what we live right now. The laughter around dinner. The courage to dream out loud. The choice to be kind even when life isn’t and people aren’t. That’s what Stories of Perseverance has always been about: real people, real growth, and the courage to live fully.

Plant Adoption LV’s Story

The car was packed to the roof with plants. Leaves brushed against the windows; small pots stacked on every seat and slotted carefully between boxes and blankets. Angel sat beside her husband, Amsey, holding a tray of succulents on her lap, their car engine sputtering as they drove. The desert air was still warm from the day, the sun sliding low over the Las Vegas skyline. They were running late to the farmers market at an apartment complex, but neither seemed to care anymore. Their little car carried Thirty-three small plants rescued from being discarded. Each one clung to a second chance.

They had learned, almost by accident, that large numbers of healthy plants were being thrown away in Las Vegas and across the country. “We couldn’t unsee it once we knew,” Angel said. “They were alive, still beautiful, and just needed care.” That first day, they filled the car with everything it could hold. They had no idea what would happen next.

By the time they arrived at the market, the engine was steaming, the sun had dipped behind the buildings, and the crowd was already thinning. They unloaded anyway and arranged the plants wherever space allowed. It was a small, humble display compared to the vendor booths around them.

People stopped to look. They asked questions, smiled, and began taking the plants home. By night’s end, all thirty-three were gone.

Cleaning the car that had been filled with soil and now covered in leaves, Angel looked at her hands still dusty from potting soil. “I think we’re supposed to keep doing this,” she said.

Amsey nodded. “Then we will.”

What started as an impulsive rescue quickly turned into something bigger. When they got the call for the next opportunity, they expected another small batch. It was not thirty-three this time. Their goal was simple, rescue plants from becoming waste and rehome them through events that felt personal and joyful. Beneath that simplicity lay something deeper, a shared belief that kindness could be contagious.

Angel had always carried that instinct. Growing up in Zurich, she learned the rhythm of community early on. Her father owned a tennis academy, and she spent her childhood surrounded by families, friends, and the energy of people connecting. She worked at the club, helping where she could.

She made coffee, ran errands, gave lessons, and spent her days competing in matches herself. “It taught me that people remember how you make them feel,” she said. “That lesson never left me.”

Amsey’s foundation was built differently, but with the same purpose. Raised in Oceanside, California, he found direction at the Boys and Girls Club.

He eventually became a

Director guiding teens through mentorship programs. He spent over two decades helping build teen centers across military bases and the communities he lived in. Creating spaces where people could belong became part of who he was.

When they met, their paths were entirely different, yet their hearts aligned. Both believed life meant more when shared.

They believed real success came from helping others. They didn’t know then that years later, that belief would become something tangible, something green and growing.

At every event since, that belief is what people feel most. Visitors often describe the experience as calming and almost therapeutic.

There is laughter, curiosity, and an unspoken sense of togetherness. Many come back not only to adopt again but as part of a growing community of plant parents. “We’ve seen people come alone and leave with new friends,” Angel said.

“That’s when you know it’s more than plants.”

The couple still handles every detail themselves. They load the trucks, rehab each plant, set up displays, and greet every person who walks through. It is physically demanding work, yet neither sees it as sacrifice. “We don’t stop because it’s hard,” Amsey said. “We keep going because it means something.”

For them, every adoption represents a small act of hope.

Each rescued plant that finds a new home carries a story of

renewal and care. In that exchange, something larger takes root. It becomes a reminder that small actions can ripple outward, changing how people see the world around them.
