Dennis Postema: Tell us about your background.

How did you get to where you are today?

Teyo Johnson: I grew up in Washington. I played sports frequently, building up to playing on two teams in college. I left Stanford for the NFL drafts, played for the Raiders and a few other teams, and then transitioned out of professional football and into business ownership.

For the last fifteen years, I’ve been out in what we call “the wilderness,” making my own success, riding out failures and learning.

Dennis: What advice do you have for people transitioning from professional sports into a more “average” career?

Teyo: When you leave pro sports, you go from being a spoiled brat to an

They fall for seductive pitches. When your agent says, “I’m going to make sure all you have to worry about is your sport. I’ll take care of your mom’s house, your cars, everything.”

And then all the kids you went to class with continue learning and gaining new skills and experience. When you’re done playing ball, you’re dropped into the wilderness without any of that. Sports teaches you work ethic, time management and discipline, but most of your skills won’t translate into a business setting. You have to start over, carve out job skills and break into the business world or the trade world.

If you do that at thirty, the competition has ten years of experience on you. You’re in a deep hole. Thankfully, I was always curious, a serial entrepreneur even in the offseason. I caught up quickly, but not completely.

Sometimes new industries pop up, making your skills and experiences transferable. Luck plays a big role, but it’s imperative that you find something you’re passionate about and become a “star player” at that skill or job. I excel in business development because I put a great deal of time and effort into it.

But playing in one field doesn’t mean you’ll be great at playing in another field. Michael Jordan is an incredible basketball player, but that doesn’t mean he’s cut out for a professional baseball team.

Surround yourself with people who are amazing in their fields. You can’t be skilled at everything, so build a solid network.

Dennis: What was the biggest thing you learned after leaving professional football?

Teyo: Financial literacy.

I didn’t have any until I was done playing. Many professional athletes lack financial literacy. Even if you went to college, you lost it.

I spent my football money twice. You go from having $100 in your pocket in college to being a millionaire. You have no understanding that this money is going to be taxed and spent. No concept of how quickly it disappears. Treat $10 like it’s $100, treat $100 like it’s $1,000, and so on.

Many business managers are vampires. They’ll suck your bank accounts dry. You could ask most athletes who’ve lost a lot of money if they’d take another serious injury to get that money back, and they’d say yes. It’s devastating.

I wish professional sports leagues would put rookies’ money into municipal bonds or other investments. There should be safeguards in place for the money they earn. You have your agent in your ear telling you they’ll take care of everything and that your focus needs to be on the game. At the end of the year, you’re like, “Oh, that’s how much money I have?” You have no idea that your agent spent your earnings on properties and did who knows what else with it.

Teyo: Networking is vital for business owners.

When you connect the dots, it feels crazy, but it’s all about building up your social capital and then monetizing it. Teyo: It was difficult. I think we’re all still recovering and processing how weird life was. My business was shuttling people around, but no one was going to events at that time.

Luckily, we have a low enough burn rate that we were able to focus on our website and platform. We didn’t have the costs that many companies in our position would’ve buckled under.

Teyo: We are M Ride and we offer luxury shuttle rides to well-known stadiums and venues around Las Vegas and San Francisco for people going to sports games, concerts, and more. Our website is mride.com.

$40 and they’re roundtrip. We have an employee on the ground to greet you, scan your QR code, and give you a wristband, which lets us know that you paid for your ticket when you’re ready to leave the venue.

We’ve been connecting with resorts to offer deals for our customers, like two-for-one drinks and more.

With our service, you skip the exodus of people leaving the venue, you skip the long walk after a tiring night out, and you don’t have to wait an hour for a taxi.

Additionally, the buses we lease would otherwise be unused. The bus company loves us because their buses and drivers are leased out, and then we sell the seats individually.

Legally, if you own the buses, you can’t sell individual seats. You have to charter that vehicle to one entity. We work as the middleman, in a way.

Dennis: What are your plans for your business moving forward?

Teyo: Our biggest goal is to work with ticketing platforms like Ticketmaster.
