Dachser is growing and investing in the future Kempten, Munich. April 4, 2017.

Dachser continued to grow in fiscal year 2016, generating consolidated gross revenue of around 5.71 billion euros—representing a consolidated revenue increase of 1.7 percent on the previous year. e number of shipments rose by 2.4 percent to 80.0 million, and tonnage by 2.4 percent to 38.2 million metric tons. is growth was driven by European overland transport as well as food logistics.

“Despite the volatility of the global economy, we were able to maintain our stable market position through organic growth at the previous years' levels, while simultaneously developing solutions for tomorrow's market,” says Dachser CEO Bernhard Simon.

Business development in specific sectors In the Road Logistics business field, which accounts for 75 percent of Dachser's total revenue, theEuropean Logistics (EL) business line profited from the company's consistent export strategy, which resulted in a 2.4percent increase in net revenue to 3.5 billion euros. Shipments and tonnage increased by 2.2 and 2.3 percent, respectively. “Our country organizations have benefited all around from the strong demand for crossborder transports in the European single market. As far as the exchange of goods is concerned, Europe is and will remain stable and closely interconnected,” comments Simon.

Dachser Food Logistics once again achieved the highest growth rate, with revenue increasing by 9.5 percent to 812 million euros. It has been buoyed primarily by strong domestic business in Germany's consumer goods sector. e second component in its success is the European Food Network for cross-border food transport.

With 13 partners, 10 associate members, and regular line haul services among 34 countries, the Food Network has the greatest geographic coverage in Europe. “Our market-leading level of quality and the positive e ects of the European Food Hub in Erlensee near Frankfurt contributed to this satisfying growth,” Simon explains.

In the Dachser Air & Sea Logistics business field, revenue decreased by 3 percent to 1.54 billion euros, while the number of shipments remained constant. is decrease in revenue was due to low international freight rates, especially in sea freight, and negative currency e ects. “We know how to deal with the volatile nature of international air and sea freight, and are consistently expanding this business field,” says Simon.

Dachser o ers its customers in this segment worldwide supply chains, routes that closely interlock with the overland transport network in Europe, and uniform IT systems. e company also aims to attract customers outside Europe by expanding intra-Asian transport operations and through the targeted organic growth of its network in the Americas.

Investments in networks and in research and development Dachser has increased the volume of its planned investments from 125 million euros in 2016 to 177 million euros in 2017. e main focus of these investments lies on expanding network locations, IT systems, and research and development. “We are intensively studying all aspects of the logistics solutions of the future and the extent to which they can be digitalized.

Dachser has launched group-wide innovation processes at numerous levels in order to maintain its pioneering role in the industry,” Simon emphasizes. e logistics provider has also been investing in the expansion of its contract logistics services, creating more than 350,000 square meters of additional warehouse space providing room for over 300,000 pallets in the past two years alone. Training on the move with Atlas Copco RCS Mobile Trailer Atlas Copco Mining and Rock Excavation Technique has invested in a RCS (Rig Control System) Mobile Trailer to make training more accessible, convenient and a ordable by taking it to the customer's doorstep.

RSC is all about faster fault detection, lower maintenance costs and enhanced rig availability, creating more productive conditions to improve drilling rates and drill steel economy. Since Atlas Copco first introduced computerised control systems for drilling rigs as early as 1998, there are more than 3000 RCS rigs currently in operation around the globe. Ongoing R&D and subsequent continuous improvements, developments and modification has resulted in even smarter systems and functions from Atlas Copco. e most recent development is the new, award winning fi h generation automation (RCS 5) which takes the control to an even higher level o ering even more refined functions for planning, conducting and analysing the drilling process, including wireless online data transmission between rig and site o ce. explains Atlas Copco South Africa's MRS Training Manager, Richard Lotheringen. “ e Mobile Trailer is in response to increasing customer requests for training on our Rig Control Systems and to meet customers' ever increasing need to continuously improve technical sta competencies on Atlas Copco mining equipment's industry-leading technological features. e Atlas Copco training ACademy at the Jet Park, Johannesburg head o ce provides a range of training programmes including RCS. But Richard points out that the cost of traditional training o ered by OEMs can sometimes present a barrier to competency development for customers who are not always in a position to fork out on expenses like transport and accommodation.

Upon quoting a key customer based in Middelburg to attend training at the ACademy, the customer stated numerous concerns. As a caring employer they wanted to avoid sta having to travel and be away from home leaving families vulnerable.

“When I advised that we were developing a mobile training unit which will be available in early 2016, our customer immediately indicated that they were prepared to wait for the training to come to them,” says Richard.

A collaborative approach to increasing the e ciency of customer operations is a key element of the Atlas Copco way of doing business and following some research on ways to bring high quality training to customers' doorsteps, the ACademy suggested a mobile training solution. A mobile trailer which was duly purchased in Q3 2015 and fitted out as a mobile training unit to meet a number of objectives; it can go virtually anywhere, it relates to any of Atlas Copco's machines equipped with RCS and it is be fitted with all the necessary components to satisfy customers to the highest levels. “With the RCS simulator, its own batteries and two fold-up camper sets, we can even o er training in the bush!” says Richard.

RCS Mobile Trailer_Rig Control System basic theoretical and practical training In late January 2016 the mobile training unit went on its maiden voyage to the Atlas Copco Middelburg o ces to conduct customer training. In addition to the RCS basic theoretical training, the course enabled participants to carry out practical training including identifying all components, physically building the circuits as per their machine, loading so ware / parameters, tests system functionality and troubleshooting faults using the RCS Test Kit. Richard reports that the results were excellent with a massive learning percentage increase per learner. e general feedback from participants was extremely positive. e participants stated that they had learnt a lot about the RCS systems and believe that the course will help improve their working skills. ey also said that they would recommend the course to all. e customer reported that in addition to sta not having to be away from home during training, using the mobile training unit has resulted in substantial savings on transport and accommodation costs. “But the biggest savings of all,” concludes Richard, “was in fuel costs and that our customer did not have to stop a machine from production.”

Atlas Copco has received requests for training locally as well as from Botswana and Namibia and eight additional courses are expected to take place in the near future. To date, they have completed over thirteen RCS courses using their mobile simulator with a good number scheduled for the rest of this year.

Compared to conventional designs, the OptiConcept M design requires up to 40 per cent less space. e approach also allows mills to optimise machinery investments according to their needs, providing increased flexibility to change the type and grade of material produced or to adjust capacity as demand changes.

Designing and building equipment that costs less and provides faster payback for customers is every bit as demanding as making the largest, fastest machines of the past, concludes Huttunen. “Valmet has asked us to bring ideas from our experience with a wide range of di erent industries, from car manufacturing to wind power. I'm sure that together we will be able to find many more innovative solutions.”

Using standard parts doesn't mean Valmet relies any less on SKF expertise, however. e bearing maker uses its deep knowledge of materials science and rotating equipment to help Valmet's engineers select precisely the right size and grade of bearing for each application.

“Our advanced bearing life calculation models mean we can recommend the right product to suit the end-customer's operating conditions and lifetime requirements,” says Huttunen. “Frequently, that means they can use a solution that is 50 per cent cheaper than they might have chosen if they'd relied on more traditional selection approaches.”

Other approaches focus on reducing operating costs for Valmet's customers.

Replacing oil-lubricated bearings with units that are sealed and lubricated for life means one less thing for customer maintenance teams to worry about, for example. SKF is also working with Valmet to capture the opportunities o ered by the industrial Internet. e acquisition will improve Konecranes' position as a focused global leader in the industrial li ing and port solutions market.

Nyanza's Richards Bay Plant Set to Provide African Market with Sustainable Titanium Dioxide Pigment Africa's titanium pigment market will soon have a new player following the conclusion of a technology partnership between Nyanza Light Metals Ltd (“Nyanza”) and Avertana Ltd of New Zealand that will culminate in the construction of a R4 billion titanium dioxide pigment (TiO2) production plant in the Richards Bay industrial development zone (IDZ). e plant will utilise waste steel slag that Evraz Highveld Steel and Vanadium has been stockpiling at its Witbank operations, 120km east of Johannesburg, since 1965. e Witbank slag of about 45 million tonnes equates to about 200 years of project life.

is achievement comes on the back of the strong foundation that SKF has established by embracing the transformation legislation from the very beginning. SKF South Africa HR & B-BBEE Manager, Corlé Grobler, explains that as the elements of the B-BBEE scorecard are aligned with the SKF Care model which encompasses business, environment, employees and community, it has always been treated as part of SKF's corporate strategy. “From day one we focused on socio-economic development, upli ing skills internally, implementing learnerships and driving preferential procurement, marking the start of our transformation journey.”

SKF continued to improve from its Level 8 status on the first B-BBEE scorecard to reach a Level 6 which was maintained for a period of time. “Level 6 accreditation gave our customers and authorised distributors 50% recognition on their procurement spend with us,” says Grobler. “But despite the B-BBEE successes, we never rested on our laurels, always setting our sights higher.”

SKF's accomplishments in the BBBEE arena prove that this approach has paid o . e advantages of Level 4 reach beyond SKF and Grobler says that the B-BBEE recognition level of a supplier has a domino e ect in the economy. “Companies want to buy from suppliers with a good B-BBEE recognition level due to the impact on their own scorecard, which impacts their ability to sell to their customers and so on.”

Authorised distributors and customers benefit not only from the recognition level of the new SKF scorecard but also from the Black Women Ownership of SKF South Africa (including Lincoln Lubrication SA). “ eir spend with our two companies results in 100% recognition in the preferential procurement target to spend 12% of procurement spend with 30% Black Women Owned businesses. So basically customers score twice on the preferential procurement element when purchasing from us.”

washing equipment on most of its sites across Ireland since 2002. e original multi-sand plant sold for the Classis site is now being upgraded a er 15 years of loyal services to Roadstone, having produced more than 3 million tonnes of sand for the construction industry. Due to increased demand for product and the improved production o ered by wet screening at the primary stage, Roadstone decided to upgrade their existing plant with an EvoWash 151 sand washing plant and an Infinity screen able to adapt to variations in feed contents.

450 tonnes per hour of raw sand and gravel material will be fed into the plant to produce 105 tonnes per hour of 0-4mm, 155 tonnes per hour of 4-20mm, 90 tonnes per hour of 20-50mm and 100 tonnes per hour of +50mm. e washed materials will be used in the production of ready-mixed concrete, concrete blocks and blacktop.

With a new and improved washing system, issues of downtime will be minimised.

Cost e cient grease solutions for sugar mills from Lincoln Lubrication Progressive lubrication systems consist of a pump connected to at least one primary metering device. e pump supplies lubricant which can be oil, fluid grease, grease or compound, to the metering device which splits the lubricant into even or predefined amounts.

Lincoln Lubrication, part of the SKF group, has supplied a number of progressive systems to the local sugar industry for bearing lubrication on sugar mill trains located at the mill front ends.

Lincoln Lubrication's Regional Manager for Kwazulu Natal and Swaziland, Kevin Mills, says that the local sugar industry is facing a number of challenges. “In addition to the prolonged drought which has a ected sugar cane quality and throughput, depressed sugar prices and sti competition from other producing countries is placing severe pressure on local sugar producers' revenues and profit margins with debilitating e ects on plans for investment in refurbishing or expansion projects. Consequently capital expenditure over the last few seasons has focused on only what is deemed necessary for safe and economical operation.”

Kevin further points out that in an attempt to counter the high cost of lubricant for mill bearings, many mills are experimenting with di erent types and brands which can a ect machinery reliability. “A seemingly inexpensive lubricant can, in the long run, cost the mill dearly in downtime to allow for repairs or replacement of damaged or failed machines.”

Most sugar mills do not have a single brand of lubrication system in use to cover all their lubrication requirements making it di cult to create a standard and maintain spares inventories. “With suitable repairs and maintenance back-up for the lubrication systems compromised, the resultant poor standards of lubrication

system maintenance and lubricant management can result in contamination of lubricants and lubrication systems leading to premature failures of machinery and components,” notes Kevin.

Kevin adds that data download capabilities are also available from such systems, allowing constant analysis and trending of any system problems as well as indicating exact quantities of lubricants dispensed to the mill bearings. e progressive system monitors mill bearing grease points for blockages/flow as well as grease levels in the lubrication pump reservoir. Analogue alarm signals are sent via a PLC to the mill control room for pro-active intervention by the maintenance team.

If low grease levels are detected in the filling station drum, the system sounds the alarm to avoid the ZPU-02 lubrication pump reservoirs from running low.

Monitoring of the filling pump functionality ensures that the mill bearings receive grease at all times. e health of the lubrication pump is also monitored; the alarm alerts maintenance in the event that the pump stops functioning so that repairs can be performed immediately with minimum disruption to uptime.
