CHABAD NAPLES

From the Directors Dear Friends, It is wonderful to see you tonight as we celebrate together the 11th anniversary of the Chabad Jewish Center of Naples and the 4th anniversary of our pride and joy, the award-winning Preschool of the Arts. We offer our sincere congratulations and gratitude to this year’s honorees, Ovadia Roni and Moriah Elias; Ellen GoldmanSavage and Sam Savage; and Kathy Abraham and salute you for your much deserved recognition. We are truly fortunate to have you as part of our special community. In addition, we are grateful to all those who have chosen to ride the wave of success with us and continue to support this amazing, miraculous Chabad Center and Preschool. We are very honored to present Mr. Dan Alon as our speaker this evening. We are sure his words will remind us all of the importance of building and sustaining a Jewish community and inspire us to keep investing in making this a reality here in Naples. The proceeds of tonight’s fundraising effort will assist in funding a much needed children’s library and indoor recreation center, and help beautify our amazing shul. When people say they love Chabad of Naples and feel so welcome here, they are recognizing our one-of-a-kind center as a spiritual hub for all to enjoy. It is your support that allows us to grow and blossom and make Chabad of Naples the success it is today. As we celebrate our 11th anniversary, we look forward with great excitement to the continued growth of our preschool, Hebrew School, and adult educational programs. Thank you for joining us this evening. We appreciate your friendship that inspires us to continue working to create your special Chabad Jewish community center here in Naples. Rabbi Fishel & Ettie Zaklos 4

CHABAD NAPLES

Chabad Naples Jewish Center In 2004, Rabbi Fishel and Ettie Zaklos and their nine-month old son relocated (from Brooklyn, New York) to Naples Florida to establish Chabad of Naples. With little more in hand than their passion for helping others and their dream of building a vibrant Jewish community, the Zakloses began to offer programs and services to the community – first from their own home and then from a modest storefront on Seagate Drive… Even as Chabad of Naples continued to grow incrementally – step by step, participant by participant, program by program – there was always that “greater dream” lurking in the background: The dream of one day being able to offer schools and a summer camp, holiday events and outreach programs, synagogue services and adult education classes; of being able to provide crisis-counseling, emergency assistance and social service programs – from a more spacious, more conducive and more prominent multipurpose facility that would properly meet the needs of an everburgeoning and blossoming community… Almost four years ago, in March 2011, that long-awaited dream became a momentous – some would say “miraculous” – reality… In an effort spearheaded by ten visionary “founding families,” the local community joined together to enable Chabad of Naples to acquire its new premises on Mandarin Road… Shortly thereafter, another three “founding families” boldly stepped forward to provide further funding for the renovation of the new center…. On January 15, 2012, Florida’s Governor Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott joined with the crowd of more than 1,000 in celebrating the Grand Opening of the new Chabad of Naples Community Center. Not long at all after those doors were opened the organization began enjoying new levels of broad-based participation in all of its programs and services… No longer incremental, the growth of the new Chabad of Naples was suddenly exponential and almost unbelievable, as we find ourselves literally bursting at our 24000-square-foot spacious seams!

PRESCHOOL OF THE ARTS

Preschool of the Arts Preschool of the Arts opened in August 2011 in a brand new, state-of-the-art facility in the heart of Naples that has rapidly grown into a warm community with a young and active spirit. The diverse, inclusive school welcomes families from all religious backgrounds, as well as those who are non-affiliated. As a result of our incredible growth we now have six classrooms, one beautiful multipurpose room, and a five-star playground. But we can’t stop now! To accommodate all the children who return annually and admit some new students, we need more space in the form of a new wing to enable an expansion of the school. Please join with us in building a foundation for the future -- it begins with the children. The preschool provides a nurturing environment where children grow and develop physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. The carefully crafted program is designed to provide children with the early foundation and framework necessary for the transition to elementary school and beyond. Professional, dedicated and loving: these words speak volumes about the staff at Preschool of the Arts. Equipped with years of study and professional experience, the staff strives to respond to the individual needs of each child. Employing cutting-edge methodology and liberal doses of warm and loving care is the preschool’s successful formula for happy, learning children. At Preschool of the Arts, children learn science, math, social studies, literacy, the arts, Judaic studies and moral values through an integrated approach to education. In addition, the school offers music and movement, gymnastics, baking/food preparation, computer time and Shabbat celebrations. The educational approach is guided by the recognition and respect for the unique qualities of each child. School children are viewed as collaborators: competent, curious, unique and creative. Every child becomes a treasured member of the preschool family.

Keynote Address Dan Alon: Dan Alon, a member of the 1972 Israeli Olympic Fencing Team. Alon’s fencing career began at age 12, continued through his teen years, and reached its peak at age 27 when he joined the Israeli fencing team at the Olympic Games. “The Olympics are a symbol of freedom and peace between nations,” says Alon. He recalls marching into the Olympic stadium in Munich under the Israeli flag. “I was in heaven. It was the most beautiful day of my life.” On September 5th of that year, during the Olympic Games, Alon’s world was changed forever when Black September terrorists invaded the building where he and his 15 fellow athletes and coaches were living. Fortunately , Alon survived the devastating Munich Massacre that occurred during the Games. Eleven were murdered in cold blood; only five, one of whom was Alon, managed to escape. In honest, often emotional terms, Alon shares with audiences his journey: the security concerns prior to the Games. In subsequent years, Alon began a career in business and became a managerdirector at a plastics company. He met his wife, Adele — a native of Cape town, South Africa — while she was hitchhiking in Israel. They live in Tel Aviv, Israel and have three children: Meir, Pazit, and Arik. Mr. Alon, has shared his inspiring story with thousands of audiences throughout the world. Chabad of Naples will be sponsoring his first appearance in Naples

Benefactor Award Ovadia Roni and Maria (Moriah) Elias Ovadia Roni Elias was born and raised in Tirat Carmel, Israel. He served in the Israeli army. In 1988, after his service was complete, Roni came to the United States. Roni spent some time in New York and then traveled to Florida where, in early 1989, he met Maria. Maria was born in Oakland, California, but only lived there for three years. Maria likes to call herself a native Floridian since she has lived in Florida for the majority of her life. Roni and Maria were married in July, 1989 in Jacksonville, Florida. Nine years went by before they had their first child, Logan Joseph, now sixteen. A year later, another son was born, Tauren Avidan who is now fifteen. In 2005, their youngest son, Tomeir Rahlem , was born. Both Roni and Maria share a strong passion for providing a strong Jewish identity and connection to Hashem for their children. Roni, Maria and their children have been fortunate to have traveled to Israel on many occasions. With each visit to Israel, their love of Am Israel Chai has been further etched in their hearts. Together, Roni and Maria are the founding pioneers of The Elias Brothers Group, a painting and contracting company that has been serving Southwest Florida since 1990. Maria serves as the licensed General Contractor for the company. Roni and Maria started the company with just a box of business cards and an old van. From there, they recruited Roni’s family from Israel to come and work together to help grow the company. The Alex & Carol Glassman Chabad Jewish Center of Naples has provided Roni and Maria the opportunity to involve their children at an early age with Jewish learning and Jewish activities. Just one example is Chabad’s annual summer 10

camp. All three boys have attended the summer camp throughout the years. Both Logan and Tauren have volunteered to be counselors at the summer camp, a way of giving back to the very same camp that they attended when they were young. Tomeir is currently enrolled in the Chabad Hebrew school and is thriving as he learns through the Aleph Champs program, a very special program that Chabad offers to its Hebrew students. The entire Elias family had an amazing experience in August 2012, where Rabbi Fishel officiated at the Bar Mitzvah of their son, Tauren Avidan. After discussing the preliminary plans that Rabbi Fishel, Rebbetzin Ettie and Sally Aaron had for a proposed mikvah, Roni and Maria did not hesitate to step forward to donate the construction work for the mikvah through the construction arm of their company, Elias Brothers Group. It was a proud moment for the whole Elias family, both in Naples and in Israel, to attend the grand opening of the Chabad of Naples Mikvah. The Elias’s are proud that now, in accordance with the halachic authority which states that “In a new Jewish community, a mikvah must be constructed first,” that they played a small role in helping the Naples community achieve that most sacred and important goal. The generosity of the Elias family continues. The Elias Family and the Yitzhak Family have graciously extended a helping hand in orchestrating the remodeling of the Aron Kodesh to face east. When asked about this, Maria & Roni state that “We are very grateful to Rabbi Fishel and Rebbitzen Ettie to allow us the opportunity to work with them again towards the completion of this important renovation.” The Elias family is proud of what the Chabad of Naples community has to offer to both Naples residents and visitors from all over the world. They are very happy that their children participate in Shabbat services and hope that with the help of this community, Chabad of Naples will be around for their children’s children, L’dor vador, and many generations to come.

Leadership Award Ellen Goldman-Savage & Sam Savage After nineteen years of practicing law in Miami and Fort Lauderdale with the law firm English, McCaughan & O’Bryan, where she was a partner in the firm’s real estate department, Ellen came to Naples in 2001 to become a partner with the law firm Porter Wright Morris & Arthur, LLP. On October 28, 2001, two months after arriving in Naples, Ellen met Sam Savage at a Federation party. Just one month prior to the party Sam had returned to Naples after having lived in Charlotte, North Carolina for two years. At that point Sam had been single for eighteen years and Ellen had been single her whole life, however, it did not take long at all for the couple to know that each had found his and her beshert. They were married on May 30, 2004 at The Tiburon Golf Club, with Rabbi Fishel one of the officiants. Raised in Bayside, New York by her father who was born in Kanzuga, Galicia, Poland and her mother who was born in Brooklyn, New York, Ellen, her older brother, Martin and older sister, Susan were taught the importance of living a Jewish life. Their parents, Arthur Goldman, an attorney with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission and law professor at St. John’s University School of Law and Bertha Stettner Goldman, a homemaker, made sure that the Goldman home was a place where the values of honestly and integrity were not just taught, but lived each day. Ellen sometimes refers to her marriage to Sam as a “mixed marriage” as Ellen is from New York and Sam is from the Midwest: Mansfield, Ohio to be exact. As members of the small Jewish community of Mansfield, Ohio in the fifties and sixties, the Savage family knew how important it was to maintain their Jewish identity, and Leonard and Evelyn Cheplowitz Savage made sure that 12

their children, Sam, and his younger sister Gayle, were instilled with a love of Judaism. Sam has been in the jewelry business his whole life, having been taught the business by his father, who was the owner of “Jay’s”, a pawn shop located in downtown Mansfield, Ohio, where jewelry was a specialty. Sam’s mother as well as Sam and Gayle helped out in the family business. After graduation from The Ohio State University in 1971, Sam spent over forty years managing jewelry stores, including Congress Jewelers in Southwest Florida. We first met Ellen and Sam eleven years ago and since then there has not been a project at Chabad where Ellen’s and Sam’s foot print have not been on it. In their very humble way they have guided, held hands and cared for every detail of Chabad’s activates. We can honestly say that Ellen and Sam have been strong pillars for us and have helped to create the solid foundation for the bourgeoning and incredible Chabad. Nothing was to small and nothing was too big…they were there. When asked how they feel about being honored, Ellen and Sam both say that they are humbled by this very special honor, and that their involvement with Chabad has enhanced their lives immeasurably. They also say that they both have been thrilled to watch what started as a tiny storefront become the imposing Jewish presence in Naples that it is today. Ellen says that serving as General Counsel for Chabad Jewish Center of Naples, Inc., on a pro bono basis for the past ten years has been the most rewarding part of her thirtytwo year legal career. Ellen would like to thank Porter Wright Morris & Arthur, LLP for allowing her to pursue this labor of love. She also would like to sincerely thank Jeff Cecil, Managing Partner of the Naples office of Porter Wright, as well as attorneys Javier Pacheco, Patrick White, Ted Walters and Linda Minck for the excellent pro bono legal work they have contributed. Both now happily semi-retired, Ellen and Sam are looking forward to having more time to devote to participating in all of the activities both Chabad and Naples have to offer. EVENING & GALA

Teacher of Excellence Award Kathy Abraham In the summer of 2012, Preschool of the Arts welcomed Kathy Abraham as their new teacher for the three and four-year-old children resident in the “Little van Gogh” room. Born in Michigan, Kathy relocated to Florida with her husband, Bret, and daughter, Leslie, in 2002. The Abrahams followed their extended family who were already living in Florida, enjoying the sunny climate and escaping Michigan’s frigid winters. Kathy had been an elementary school teacher in Michigan, and knew that she wanted to continue working with children while being able to be home with her young daughter every afternoon. She looked for a teaching position that could fulfill both goals. She answered Preschool of the Arts’ advertisement for a preschool teacher and soon discovered that she’d found “her thing”. Kathy likes to say “Who wouldn’t love a job where every day you are paid in hugs, ‘I love you’s’ and refrigerator art?” Kathy remembers her first time on campus, being immediately drawn to the beautiful and inviting classrooms. She remembers discovering that the carefully thought out environment was just one part of what makes Preschool of the Arts so special. In the days and weeks that followed, Kathy got to know her fellow teachers and found them to be warm, welcoming, and true team players. Kathy recalls that the preschool teachers were always happy to answer any questions that she had and made her feel like part of the family from the start. Kathy immediately fell in love with her teaching position and two and a half years passed very quickly! When asked about her philosophy of teaching, Kathy says: “I believe that the best teachers never stop learning. Each and every child I meet challenges me to grow as a teacher and a person. Every day I come to school wanting to be better than the day before. A better listener. A better friend. A better teacher. A better person. At Preschool of the Arts, the teachers feel comfortable learning from one another and from the children we teach. In the true spirit of Reggio Emilia, we are encouraged to listen and to learn. We work together with the children, their parents, and the entire community as we seek the best ways to enrich and nurture the children that are in our care each day.” When asked how she feels about being honored, Kathy says: “I am humbled to be receiving this award for teaching excellence. I realize that I am just one part of the incredible team of loving and creative people that make Preschool of the Arts so special. Ettie and Rabbi Fishel have created an environment that allows children to grow at their own pace and allow teachers to grow in their profession. I feel blessed to be a part of this community of learners.” 14

EVENING AND AWARDS

IN LOVING MEMORY, ALEX GLASSMAN NOVEMBER 15, 1921 - JUNE 7, 2010

We have a name ... and it’s the

Alex & Carol Glassman Chabad Naples Jewish Community Center Last year was a major milestone for us: while celebrating our 10th Anniversary in the community we decided to honor a generous donation and the memory of one of our avid supporters by naming our campus the Alex & Carol Glassman Chabad Naples Jewish Community Center. Although Alex passed away in 2010, we will always remember the joy with which he acknowledged our successes and the excitement he expressed at our plans for educating our youth. Alex, or “Eliyahu” (as he was always so fond of his Hebrew name), Glassman was such a warm and passionate soul… His cheerful demeanor would lift the spirits of all those around him… He was a proud Jew and a generous humanitarian .. There is no doubt that, at this very moment, Alex is looking on proudly from the heavens, sharing in the blessings of this great moment. Yes, there are also angels in our midst who are not invisible at all; physical angels who touch our lives with virtue and blessing… Carol Glassman is such an angel. Carol continues to support our worthy endeavors and carries that torch on behalf of the both of them – even more so than ever before!

We plan to honor and thank you with a special Partnership Appreciation Event, to be held on Thursday, May 14 at 7:00 PM. This special gathering is where we can express our deepest and most sincere thanks to each and everyone of you for believing in us, and for your incredible and hopefully continued partnership in making the expanded dream a reality. If this is what the Partnership Project has been able to achieve in just two years, imagine the possibilities! Our wish for you today and each day of the year, is for continued blessings and Nachas for your outstanding generosity. Ms. Kathy is a wonderful teacher! She greets every child with a smile and a warm hello every morning. Her caring nature and positive attitude is apparent in everything she does in the classroom. She has a calm presence and special ability to engage each child in fun and educational activities throughout the day. We are very grateful that our son has had the opportunity to be her student and have no doubt she is a major reason he is having such a terrific year at school. Ms. Kelly is very cheerful, patient, and takes the time to get to know each child. The children enjoy spending time with her and are very lucky to have her guidance in the classroom. We truly appreciated all she does every day! - Julie & David Lazarus

And her affection for the children is extremely evident. - Stacie & Brian Carroll

Passionate, nurturing, patient, and caring just a few words to describe Ms. Kathy. We continue to feel extremely blessed Ms. Kathy is in Thatcher’s life. She has masterfully supported and guided him through his first year at the Preschool of the Arts. Thatcher arrives at school excited about what the day will hold and returns home eager to share. His educational journey has been more meaningful and profound because of Ms. Kathy. We will be forever grateful.

Ms. Kelly is the perfect complement to Ms. Kathy. She helps to provide an environment of fun and excitement that is contagious. Her smile and calming demeanor reassures Thatcher he is welcomed and loved. We hope Ms. Kelly will always remain a part of our extended family. - Kerri & Ray Hair

My favorite thing about Ms. Kathy is her positive demeanor and her true gift for getting inside a child's mind to see what motivates them! We love the vast variety of exciting planned play activities that are actually working on the child's development. Ms. Kathy is an early childhood genius! My favorite thing about Ms. Kelly is her smile and calm demeanor. She makes it easy for the children to feel comfortable with her. Jordan loves Ms. Kelly and loves to share his many thoughts with her. Although we just met this year, I know Ms. Kelly will go on to be successful in all her future endeavors. - Julie & Dan Wasserman

We feel so blessed to have Ms. Kathy in our family's life over the past year. We genuinely appreciate her close attention and care for our son; her classroom is truly a positive and nurturing environment. We love to see our son, Logan, come home from school excited to tell us about his wonderful day at school. - Erin & Conrad Williams

CHABAD NAPLES

Cute Cassatt

Once upon a time there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself to think of someone who would dance to the day. So he began to walk faster to catch up. As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasn't dancing, but instead he was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and very gently throwing it into the ocean. As he got closer he called out, "Good morning! What are you doing?" The young man paused, looked up and replied, "Throwing starfish in the ocean." "I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?" "The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don't throw them in they'l die." "But, young man, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it. You can't possibly make a difference!" The young man listened politely. Then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the ocean, past the breaking waves and said - "It made a difference for that one."

Thank you for taking care of our precious little starfish ! With Love, Joel, Charlie, Jillian, Autumn, Dewey, Stephania, Alexa, Isla, Michael, Jackson, Hunter, Nicole, Cole, Zane, Miller, Leo, and Edison

CHABAD NAPLES

Artist rendering Your $1,000 Donation is worth $2,000!

Dear Friends and Family, We are on the threshold of yet another exciting project that will literally change the face of the sanctuary. After almost a year of meetings with the most reputable company in Israel, that works with shuls all around the world, the Aron Kodesh Committee now has finalized our plans for the Ark renovations. How thrilling it would be if we could celebrate Rosh Hashanah in a fresh, new, comfortable environment! This is the place where we meet as a community and as a family, and we need your help to bring this to completion. We begin our campaign with thanks to the generosity of the Elias and Yitzchak families for their $100,000 matching gift contribution: they will match every dollar donated up to $100,000! This is a beautiful start, but in order to continue and complete the project, we need your assistance and support. Here is your chance to get involved, and your turn to be counted. Well into the future you and your family will know how your thoughtful efforts helped to create the beautiful Chabad of Naples where we worship together. Only you can help make this dream, your dream and our dream, a reality. We would be happy to meet with you any time at your convenience to discuss the project and how you may participate. Rabbi Fishel & Ettie Zaklos Arthur M. Seigel, M.D. On behalf of the Sanctuary renovation committee
