FROM THE DIRECTORS Dear Friends, Thank you for joining us tonight as we celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Chabad Jewish Center of Naples and the third anniversary of the Preschool of the Arts. We want to congratulate and thank this year’s honorees: Carol Glassman, Benefactor Award recipient; and Liddy and Daniel Sexton, Preschool Tribute recipients, for their commitment and generosity. At the same time, we want to express our appreciation to all the donors who made it possible for us to acquire our own building three years ago. The phenomenal growth of all of our programs during the past three years is due in part to our new facility. A building is bricks and mortar, but people bring it to life and fulfillment. Tonight’s theme is “An Historic Evening”, and it is truly historic. This is the first time we have had the opportunity and pleasure to welcome a guest like Mrs. Eva Schloss, stepsister of Anne Frank, here in Naples, FL to tell her story; it is a great honor for the Chabad of Naples to be sponsoring her appearance and talk. We are also celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Chabad of Naples. When we arrived in Naples in 2004, we did not know a single person. Very soon, we were embraced and mentored by many wonderful individuals who nurtured us, encouraged us, and became our Naples family. We look back on the past ten years and are overwhelmed with the kindness, generosity and love that you have showered on us and on our children. As we celebrate our tenth anniversary, we also look forward with great excitement to the continuing growth of our Preschool, Hebrew School, and adult programs. We hope that you will visit us shortly at Chabad to join us for coffee and conversation, and to sample some real Chabad hospitality. Thank you for your devotion, friendship, love and support. You inspire us to continue working to create a special Jewish community center here in Naples. With love and appreciation, Fishel & Ettie Zaklos 6

FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends: Welcome to the historic 10th Anniversary gala event of the Chabad of Naples. We are honored to have Mrs. Eva Schloss as our guest speaker. There are many reasons why we have enjoyed such amazing growth and success over the decade. First and foremost, our Chabad welcomes everyone regardless of their past experience and level of observance. We have an especially warm and supportive congregation that embraces each and every participant. Seasonal residents know that they are “home when they arrive- sometimes from far away. Then there is the food! Each Shabbos, we share a wonderful Kiddush lunch together, and our Community Shabbos dinners and festival dinners are also widely acclaimed. Many special events like the annual Chanukah festival have become highly anticipated events for the entire Naples community. Most importantly, the unrelenting commitment and energy of Rabbi Fishel and Rebbetzin Ettie have been responsible for our past success and ensure our continued future growth together with you. Thank you for attending and supporting the Chabad of Naples. Arthur M. Seigel, M.D. President

CHABAD NAPLES JEWISH CENTER In 2004, Rabbi Fishel and Ettie Zaklos and their nine-month old son relocated (from Brooklyn, New York) to Naples Florida to establish Chabad of Naples. With little more in hand than their passion for helping others and their dream of building a vibrant Jewish community, the Zakloses began to offer programs and services to the community – first from their own home and then from a modest storefront on Seagate Drive… Even as Chabad of Naples continued to grow incrementally – step by step, participant by participant, program by program – there was always that “greater dream” lurking in the background: The dream of one day being able to offer schools and a summer camp, holiday events and outreach programs, synagogue services and adult education classes; of being able to provide crisis-counseling, emergency assistance and social service programs – from a more spacious, more conducive and more prominent multipurpose facility that would properly meet the needs of an ever-burgeoning and blossoming community… Almost three years ago, on Sunday, March 2011, that long-awaited dream became a momentous – some would say “miraculous” – reality… In an effort spearheaded by ten visionary “founding families,” the local community joined together to enable Chabad of Naples to acquire its new premises on Mandarin Road… Shortly thereafter, another two “founding families” boldly stepped forward to provide further funding for the renovation of the new center…. On January 15, 2012, Florida’s Governor Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott joined with the crowd of more than 1,000 in celebrating the Grand Opening of the new Chabad of Naples Community Center. Not long at all after those doors were opened the organization began enjoying new levels of broad-based participation in all of its programs and services… No longer incremental, the growth of the new Chabad of Naples was suddenly exponential and almost unbelievable, as we find ourselves literally bursting at our 24000-square-foot spacious seams! 8

P R E S C HO OL OF T H E A RT S Preschool of the Arts opened two years ago in a brand new, state-of-the-art facility in the heart of Naples that has rapidly grown into a warm community with a young and active spirit. The diverse, inclusive school welcomes families from all religious backgrounds, as well as those who are non-affiliated. As a result of our incredible growth we now have five classrooms, one beautiful multipurpose room, and a five-star playground. But we can’t stop now! To accommodate all the children who return annually and admit some new students, we need more space in the form of a new wing to enable an expansion of the school. Please join with us in building a foundation for the future -- it begins with the children. The preschool provides a nurturing environment where children grow and develop physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. The carefully crafted program is designed to provide children with the early foundation and framework necessary for the transition to elementary school and beyond. Professional, dedicated and loving: these words speak volumes about the staff at Preschool of the Arts. Equipped with years of study and professional experience, the staff strives to respond to the individual needs of each child. Employing cutting-edge methodology and liberal doses of warm and loving care is the preschool’s successful formula for happy, learning children. At Preschool of the Arts, children learn science, math, social studies, literacy, the arts, Judaic studies and moral values through an integrated approach to education. In addition, the school offers music and movement, gymnastics, baking/food preparation, computer time and Shabbat celebrations. The educational approach is guided by the recognition and respect for the unique qualities of each child. School children are viewed as collaborators: competent, curious, unique and creative. Every child becomes a treasured member of the preschool family. PRESCHOOL

KEYNOTE ADDRESS M R S . E VA S C H L O S S Eva Schloss was born Eva Geiringer inVienna in May 1929, the second child, after her brother Heinz, of Erich and Fritzi Geiringer. Shortly after the annexation of Austria by Germany in 1938, the Geiringer family emigrated to Belgium and finally to Amsterdam where Eva Geiringer shared a remarkably similar history with Anne Frank. The Geiringers lived on the opposite side of Merwedeplein, the square where the Frank’s apartment was located, and Eva and Anne were almost exactly the same age and shared a common friend. Anne had introduced Eva to her father when the Geiringers first came to Amsterdam “so you can speak German with someone” as Anne had said, and Eva never forgot Otto’s kindness to her. Eva’s brother Heinz was called up for deportation to a labor camp on the same day as Anne’s older sister Margot, and the Geiringers went into hiding at the same time that the Franks did, though the Geiringer family split into two groups to do so - Eva and her mother, and Heinz and his father. Though hiding in two separate locations, all four of the Geiringers were betrayed on the same day, about three months before the Frank family. Eva survived Auschwitz, and when the Russians liberated Birkenau, the women’s sector of the camp, she walked the mile-and-a-half distance to the men’s camp to look for her father and brother, finding out much later that they had not survived the prisoner march out of Auschwitz. But when she entered the sick barracks of the men’s camp, she recognized Otto Frank, and had a warm reunion with him. Eight years later, Otto married Eva’s widowed mother Fritzi, thereby making Eva a stepsister of Anne. Forty years after the end of World War II, Eva began to share her story. Today she joins many courageous individuals who work tirelessly to end the violence and bigotry that continue to plague our world. She has since written 2 books and spoken to more than one thousand audiences about her experiences. For her dedication to this work, Northumbria University in England awarded Mrs. Schloss an honorary doctorate in 2001. Mrs. Schloss is a co-founder of the Anne Frank Trust UK. Mrs. Schloss has three daughters and lives in London with her husband Zvi. PRESCHOOL

CHABAD HONOREE B E N E FA C T O R AWA R D : C A R O L G L A S S M A N Both Alex and Carol Glassman were born in Canada. Alex was born in Montreal, where his parents arrived after escaping from the Ukraine (Kamianets-Podilski) just before it was ceded to Soviet Russia (1921). He was the eldest of six boys. His father, who headed north to discover gold in Val d’Or, (one of the few places where it never was found) became a peddler to support his growing family and eventually opened a successful men’s wear store in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec. Alex worked in the family business and with the aid of a scholarship and several part time jobs, was eventually able to graduate from McGill University in Chemical Engineering. He later attended the University of Chicago where he graduated with an Executive MBA. Carol is a third generation Torontonian on her mother’s side, while her father emigrated from an area in Galicia that was part of the Austrian Empire to Canada. Alex and Carol met and married in Toronto, where Carol’s main profession was teaching -- Art, English, and Special Education. Always interested and active in Canadian politics, she often wrote professionally for various politicians and worked on their campaigns. Alex was a consultant to the pulp, paper, and printing industry for many years, although his constant entrepreneurial nature led him into various other fields. In the late 70s he formed a conglomerate that repatriated Bakelite Thermosets Canada from Union Carbide and he also purchased a printing company in Ontario. His consulting took him around the world where he assisted several major paper manufacturers and end-users with research and development, and helped to establish a paper mill in Hadera, Israel. He assisted friends in establishing their paper companies in the US, sat on their Boards, and from 1986 until 2009 was part of the founding Board of Directors of Zeton International, in Burlington, Ontario 16

and Hengelo and Enschede, the Netherlands -- it’s a unique company that builds and installs pilot plants worldwide. Investments and vacations brought Alex and Carol to Florida and Marco Island’s Hideaway Beach, where they decided to build their home; Alex was a partner/investor in developing Royal Marco Point. One of Alex’s specialties was developing paper coatings, and while working with National Geographic Magazine, his expertise allowed them to expand from black and white into printing color photos that did not ‘bleed’ into the next page. He also wrote a text, Printing Fundamentals for the Papermaker, which is used as reference by TAPPI - the Technical Association of the Printing and Paper Industry. He was one of few, recognized by his peers, to be awarded a TAPPI Fellowship. Alex was a very intense scholar whose personal interests were history, geography, finance, and politics. He collected stamps from the time he was IN LOVING MEMORY, a child and wrote a stamp column in a ALEX GLASSMAN newspaper as a teenager, sharing his NOVEMBER 15, 1921 - JUNE 7, 2010 passion with the sailors who docked in his home town of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec. As a youngster he was a King’s Scout, and lived by those principles all his life. He had the unique ability of being able to discuss politics from a very factual point of view, and although his opinions may have been diametrically opposed to another’s, he never humiliated or put down anyone’s ideas. He would laughingly say that he “tried to retire several times, but it just never seemed to stick”. Even in his 80s, he was called upon to serve as an expert witness for a paper company in Brazil. He would read a newspaper or a company’s quarterly report from beginning to end; financial analysts would say that a discussion with Alex was like “getting insider information”. He was an avid bridge player (known as Mr. Three-No Trump) and enjoyed the Naples Council of World Affairs Great Decisions discussion groups. In addition to several technical and educational associations, he was a staunch supporter of Technion. Alex was a very warm and humble man with a big generous heart and a huge PRESCHOOL

laugh; he referred to himself as “a simple country boy”, and lived to that end. Carol’s interests are quite different. She has always been involved in the arts and has had many interests from water colors to wood carving, pottery and ceramics, cooking, knitting and sewing, Japanese flower arranging, gemology, beading, reading and writing. She has taught writing to adults and facilitated book groups for many years. Although Alex was always her biggest fan and supporter, he would tease her that her hobbies were interfering with her social life. She belonged to the National Council of Jewish Women and is a lifelong member of Hadassah WIZO. She has been a photo-journalist since moving to Florida and is one of the founders of Marco Island’s Coastal Breeze News - she still contributes to the newspaper. Alex and Carol shared a lifelong interest in Judaism, Israel, and education. They became acquainted with Rabbi Fishel and Ettie, upon their arrival in Naples ten years ago, and as they watched their accomplishments and success in the Naples/Marco Island communities they were in awe, especially over Chabad’s inclusive open-door policy which attracted Jewish people of all beliefs. They appreciated how meaningful they made Judaism as a way of life that the children could appreciate and understand. Acquiring the building seemed monumental, and with the opening of the Preschool, Chabad of Naples seemed to be a place where miracles were taking place daily. While arranging their future planned giving, they put Chabad on the top of their list. Unfortunately, Alex passed away in 2010 before all the details were finalized, but Carol carried on with his wishes and their intentions. When a very real need for an additional classroom arose in 2013, she did not hesitate. In fact, she has since decided that she would rather see an ‘investment’ in Chabad in action and intends to help them realize their goals “sooner rather than later”. Although she has stated that she would prefer “anonymous giving” she agreed to ‘go public’, hoping it would encourage others in the community to do the same. “Our idea of sharing has always been to make someone else’s life easier,” Carol has said. “Rabbi Fishel and Ettie work tirelessly to give us a wonderful spiritual home and to meet our needs. I can think of no people whose lives I would want to simplify more, or no more worthy recipients than Chabad of Naples.”

PRESCHOOL TRIBUTE L I D DY A N D D A N I E L S E X T O N We first met Ettie and Rabbi Fishel when we were merely entertaining the idea of sending our “baby” to preschool, as we were expecting baby number two. After walking through the doors of Preschool of the Arts, we immediately knew that this was the best idea. It was so evident that Ettie and Rabbi Fishel had put so much love and care into this incredible preschool environment, from the playground to the classrooms, and the amazing teachers and staff. We were blown away. The choice was the easiest choice we have ever had to make, and the inaugural school year had yet to even begin! Over the past two and a half years, we have fallen in love with Preschool of the Arts. Our second “baby” is now also a confident and happy student. We have always felt nurtured, rewarded, and, most importantly, loved. It has been incredible not only to watch our children thrive, but to watch the school become such a well-acclaimed addition to Naples. What Ettie and Rabbi Fishel have built will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Our babies are happy, so our hearts are full. This has been so apparent to our family, too. After a very impressive first Grandparents’ Day performance, David and Patty Sexton knew the perfect way to fulfill the desires for their long- time friends of over 30 years, Charles and Virginia Jacobsen. Charles and Virginia Jacobsen were long-time winter residents of Naples, a place they loved. Summers were spent in Syracuse, N.Y., where they owned a successful oriental rug business. Mr. Jacobsen served as Colonel in both World War I and World War II. He also authored a book in 1962, Oriental Rugs. A Complete Guide. They both lived happily into their 90s. Although the Jacobsens had no children of their own, they both shared an immense love for the children of this community. They strongly believed in the value of education, and wanted to give back to this town in which they were thrilled to live. Among the many gifts they have given to the children of Naples is a child-friendly dragon sculpture, appropriately named Jake, in Cambier Park. PRESCHOOL

Estelle and I are pleased to be Partners in the World Famous Chabad Naples. Although we recently moved to Aventura on the East Coast, it does not lessen our desire to support the efforts of Chabad Naples in its wonderful work educating and molding the character of the young children in their formative years … It feels good to write a check to Chabad Naples!” David & Estelle Silver
Joining the partner Partnership Project is s a very special honor, whereby I feel I am personally participating in a wonderful adventure, in a manner that I choose, to contribute towards Chabad Naples’ fine community works. And as Rabbi Fishel reminds us: No pressure!”
As an educator, I compliment Chabad Naples on its many programs that enhance our community.
