Cash for cuckoo boat dig

CHESTERFIELD Canal Trust has secured £10,000 from the Aviva Community Fund for its Last Cuckoo Project, which will pay for an archaeological dig at Staveley, where the site to be excavated is the original Bellhouse Basin on the canal. It is believed at least one cuckoo boat, unique to this canal and so named because boat people thought they looked out of place, could be there. Brick Lock repair work

A £500,000 project is under way to repair Brick Lock on the River Stort near Roydon. The work is being carried out by the Canal & River Trust in order to reconstruct the lock wall to prevent it from subsiding and is expected to be completed in April. Brick Lock is one of 15 locks along the 14-mile River Stort navigation. Constructed in 1769, it would have been used primarily to support trade to and from local waterside mills, while today it is used primarily by boaters visiting and living on the Stort.
