Government funding cuts put future of nation's historic canals at risk

THE Canal & River Trust has issued a stark warning that government funding cuts mean the nation's muchloved canal network is at risk of closures. The warning comes as the growing impact of climate change is increasing the cost

of maintaining historic canals. CRT chief executive Richard Parry has urged the public to show support to keep canals alive and join the call in lobbying their MPs for the Government to change its decision as well as backing the trust's campaign to

keep canals alive at https:/ / c a n a l r i v e r t r u s t . o r g . uk/ keepcanalsalive He warned that, unless a more realistic funding settlement is secured, it will turn the clock back on one of the nation's greatest heritage regeneration stories and lead

Diamond Soundings

Sponsor a rivet

THE Residential Boat Owners' Association (RBOA) celebrated its 60th anniversary with a special glossy covered edition of its magazine Soundings. In his opening remarks, chairman Charles Foster referred to the move of the usual bi-monthly edition to an online emailed version. Thanks go to editor Beryl McDowell and the staff at Anchor Print for the production of the anniversary magazine - first of many annual editions. As well as the usual association news, it features members' accounts of their travels, making for very interesting reading.

THE Friends of President launched its Sponsor a Rivet appeal at the Braunston Historic Boat Rally. As the Friends now have the drawings for the boiler, they know exactly how many rivets there are - more than 200. If all the rivets were sponsored for £10 each, this would raise more than £2000 towards the appeal's £20,000 shortfall. Rivets can be sponsored via the Black Country Living Museum website (bclm.com). If you would like to sponsor a specific rivet email fopsecretaryl95@gmail. com and you will be sent a numbered certificate.

Bridge rebuild

• Continued on page 2

THE Canal & River Trust has completed the project to rebuild the Grade II listed Hazlehurst Bridge across the Caldon Canal near Endon in Staffordshire. The 12-month project, costing £2 million, was enabled by an award from the Postcode Earth Trust. The bridge has been rebuilt in its former location with the same form, scale and character as before, with many of the original stone copings reused. Described as an accommodation bridge, it provides access across the canal for farmers and residential boaters and to the trust for maintenance work.
