A PLANNING application has been submitted to extend Cromford Canal north from the existing terminus at Langley Mill. The Friends of the Cromford Canal (FCC) group said it was “excited” to announce that a cross-border planning
application had been submitted to Broxtowe (BBC) and Amber Valley (AVBC) borough councils. The application is currently available to view on the AVBC website, reference AVA/2019/0179, and will also shortly be available to view on the Broxtowe
council website, when it is validated. Named after a historic loading wharf on the site, the Beggarlee Extension will include the construction of 1km of new canal channel, a two-rise staircase pair of locks and utilisation of a disused bridge to pass underneath the A610 bypass.
It will also provide a vital missing link to the footpaths in the area and allow visitors to link from the existing Erewash Valley trail to the nature reserves north of the site without a road diversion. • Continued on page 2

Moorings price review
A BUSY road into Nuneaton has reopened earlier than planned after the Canal & River Trust completed important restoration works to the bridge over the Ashby Canal ahead of schedule. The trust had been working on the 200-year-old Bramcote Road Bridge since early January as part of its programme of repairs and restoration. The project has seen more than £200,000 invested in repairs to the bridge, which carries the B4114 over the Ashby Canal.
A PROJECT to revamp north Leicester’s canal towpaths will make it easier for people to spend some time by the water. The scheme has seen engineering works around Holden Street and up to Belgrave Lock. The widened and resurfaced path will provide a green, traffic-free route into the heart of the city for walkers, cyclists and people with buggies. New mooring rings have been installed by Wolsey Island to encourage more visiting boaters to stop and see the attractions.
WATERSIDE Moorings, a division of the Canal & River Trust, has written to customers in central London advising them of the outcome of the price review to bring prices in-line with the market rate for these sites. Apart from 16% of London customers who will see prices increase between inflation and 1% above inflation and 8% whose prices will remain the same, the remainder will see prices rise more significantly. Annual increases will be capped to a maximum of 10% for a transition period of up to five years.
