THE second stage of the Canal & River Trust’s licensing consultation has been completed with workshops taking place across the country. More than 900 licence holders had expressed an interest in attending these events which will help the CRT formulate its charging structure for the future. But although it was planned that

there would be 15 attendees at each one, only eight were present at a workshop held in London on June 20, according to the Inland Waterways Association. The IWA is urging as many boaters as possible to take part in the third part of this exercise, which looks set to be launched in mid-August, so a larger range of views are gathered and
THE Shrewsbury and Newport Canals Trust (SNCT) has had to put its Thomas Telford @ Wappenshall Wharf project on hold while it regroups and decides how to proceed following the failure of its Round 2 bid for a £1.3 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. SNCT has had a subsequent meeting with the HLF to explore future options, including a new bid with a radically strengthened business plan. At its next trustees’ meeting these issues will be fully debated and the future direction of the trust will be decided.

Canal walls rebuilt
THE Canal & River Trust has completed £1 million of improvement works to the Rochdale Canal between Sowerby Bridge and Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire. Canal walls have been rebuilt along a five-mile stretch between locks 3 and 7 after they were badly damaged during the heavy rainfall in winter 2015. The work to stabilise the canal wall was completed ahead of scheduled improvements to the towpath this summer. Small, localised sections between Locks 7 and 8 are scheduled for completion in November this year.
made by boaters is spread fairly across the boating community – both now and for the future. “I would encourage all our boating customers to respond to the consultation when it goes live in August so that we have a full view of boaters’ thoughts and feelings to help us shape the future of boat licensing.”
HS2 blight lifted
MORE than four years of campaigning by the Chesterfield Canal Trust has paid off with the Government announcement of the eastern (M1) route for Phase 2b of HS2. This means that the blight on the restoration route of the canal through Renishaw, Spinkhill and Killamarsh since January 2013 has officially been lifted. The trust will now be redoubling fundraising efforts and chairman Robin Stonebridge outlined tasks ahead including negotiations with HS2 Ltd to ensure that the line linking the new route with the depot in Staveley enables, rather than hinders, further canal restoration.
