IN A bid to beat the winter blues on ‘Blue Monday’ – known as the most depressing day of the year – the Canal & River Trust organised a Great Winter Canal Get Together on the Grand Union Canal at Southall, West London. One of hundreds of events happening across the country in memory of the murdered MP Jo Cox, it was held on Monday, January 16 with the aim of helping tackle loneliness, isolation and poor mental and physical health – which can become even more common
during the short, dark days of winter. The Labour politician was stabbed in 2016 in her Batley & Spen constituency where she was due to hold a routine surgery. Her London home was on a houseboat on the Thames in Wapping. CRT communications and campaigns manager Alex Paterson said: “Jo Cox said in her maiden speech to Parliament ‘we have more in common than that which divides us’. It was lovely to see so many local people from different
backgrounds come together with the canal as the focal point. “Even in the dark and cold it’s clear the difference that being by or on the water can make to people’s well-being and we certainly blew away the January blues – for a day at least.” More than 40 people took narrowboat trips throughout the day, while having a cup of tea and a cosy chat by the wood-burning stove. Participants, including Ealing Southall MP Virendra Sharma, also enjoyed specially designed cupcakes promoting
the trust’s £1million Southall Wellbeing Way project which will transform a 6km stretch of the local canal network with upgraded towpath, green spaces and opportunities for exercise and community activities. Alex added: “We have been working with the community and partners to develop exciting plans for the Southall Wellbeing Way and hope that more and more people locally will be able to visit and enjoy this fantastic asset on their doorstep.”

Doddie Aid
Bude dredging
Blue spaces
SCOTTISH Canals are supporting Doddie Aid 2023 by offering those taking part in the exercise event a free cuppa at either The Falkirk Wheel café or the Caledonian Canal Centre, Fort Augustus. Participants just have to show their Doddie Aid snood or verify with the Doddie Aid app during the event which runs until February 12. The event raises money for My Name’5 Doddie Foundation for research into Motor Neurone Disease in memory of rugby legend Doddie Weir who died last year.
A MAJOR dredging programme is getting under way on the Bude Canal to reinstate a safe navigable depth for watercraft along the canal and restore the role of the canal in carrying flood waters as part of the flood defence strategy for Bude. Works were set to begin from January 23, depending on weather conditions, and are due to be completed before the summer. The canal will be closed during the dredging operation with restricted on sections of the towpath and cycleway.
CHARITY Bluetonic and Rachel Andrews, Everyday Athlete, have created a challenge called ‘Awaken your blue mind’ to encourage people to go to blue spaces. Activities to do by a waterway including walking, fishing, cycling and even writing a poem. The resources are all free, but the challenge itself is £5 to enter and you get a sew-on badge at the end. According to Bluetonic research shows being near water can lower stress and increase overall well-being – the ‘blue mind’. Visit www.bluetonic.org.uk
