CRT sees income rise to £237 million in record year for waterway projects THE Canal & River Trust has seen its overall income increase by £12 million to £237 million in the last year, raising more from commercial operations as its reliance on government funding decreases. In what the charity says was a record year for charitable work (£208 million), it also spent £70 million on engineering
works, £27 million on upgrading reservoirs and a further £9 million in emergency repairs, according to its recently released 2023/24 annual report. Commercial income of £97 million, which includes mooring and other fees, now represents 41% of the trust’s total income. The importance of this is highlighted by the fixed government
funding of £52.6 million, which the trust says would have been £63.7 million if it had kept pace with inflation. The charity is braced for more cuts from 2027 as the new Labour Government tries to balance the books. Richard Parry, chief executive of the Canal & River Trust, said: “A key part of the Canal & River Trust’s long-term plan
is to continue to reduce dependency on government funding by further developing and growing alternative sources of income. During the year ended March 31, 2024, our commercial income was £97.1m, 12.2% higher than in the prior year.” • Continued on page 2
RCR summer rescue spike
Boat builder Gail shortlisted
Call for Children’s Charter
RIVER Canal Rescue says its teams responded to an unprecedented number of callouts between June 1 and August 31. Fifty major incidents involved submerged, partially sunken or grounded craft and there were 1200 general callouts, typically for electrical, fuel and engine issues, flat batteries, overheating and gearbox failures. This equates to nearly half of the 121 major incidents RCR attended last year, and around a third of the whole of 2023’s general callouts, which totalled 3335 and were evenly spread across the UK.
BOAT builder Gail McGarva is among finalists of this year’s Heritage Crafts Awards. The awards, hosted by national charity Heritage Crafts, showcase heritage skills talent in a wide range of disciplines. Gail builds and restores traditional wooden boats and uses her background in the theatre through The Story Boat, with which she travels to schools and events. She’s a finalist in the President’s Award for Endangered Crafts category. Winners will be announced during November.
CALLS are being made for the creation of a charter to protect the rights of the children of constant cruisers to a reasonable journey time to school. It comes as a mass survey of water users revealed hundreds of boaters are missing out on access to vital services. Now, appeals are being made for the Canal & River Trust to introduce a Children’s Charter protecting the rights of a child to have access to their school within a reasonable journey time.
