Waterways campaigners take message to Westminster

and captured the attention of many MPs who had just attended Prime Minister’s questions on Wednesday, May 8. Fund Britain’s Waterways chairman Les Etheridge said: “It has been fantastic to have boats travel from across the country to gather outside the Palace

of Westminster. Supporting inland waterways is vital in continuing to enable people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy and connect with their local stretch of water.” The flotilla included a mix of commercial freight vessels, several

Slipway funding

GROUNDWORK has started on the restoration of the next section of the Chesterfield Canal. This follows three years of preparation made possible thanks to £5.8 million awarded to the Chesterfield Canal Trust by the Staveley Town Deal and 160,000 cubic metres of roof clay donated by Suon Ltd. The Trans-Pennine Trail bridge will cross the canal at Hartington and the towpath will be built through to Renishaw. A groundbreaking ceremony was due to take place on Friday, May 17.

GRANTHAM Canal Society is seeking funding for information boards between Nottingham and Hickling. It is calling on photographers, historians, ornithologists, wildlife enthusiasts, designers and anyone else with an interest to come up with ideas. The society is keen to include canal details, history, photographs, bird and wildlife information as well as things to look out for, a treasure hunt and family activities. Contact Peter at peter.gs@icloud.com to get involved.

AN APPLICATION by Louth Navigation Trust to the UK Shared Prosperity Fund has resulted in a £54,650 grant offer requiring match funding. The project is to build a slipway at Austen Fen to enable small craft and paddlers access to the ‘seven mile level’ between Austen Fen and Tetney Lock. New owners of AF warehouse, Andy Singleton and Chau Ngoh Lee of sustainable planning and design firm Ecovril, are on board to help restoration plans by donating design drawings and concepts for ‘in kind’ contributions.
