THE Inland Waterways Association (IWA) is calling on national and local government to fund all waterways. This should be at a level that keeps them as major assets that can continue to contribute to the economy, enhance
people’s health and well-being and cope with the climate crisis, the IWA says in its new campaign. IWA chief executive David Pearce stated: “Our waterways benefit millions of people in the country and it is essential
that government continues to invest in them to ensure that these benefits can be maintained and increased.” IWA is deeply concerned about the threat posed by funding cuts, with Canal & River Trust and Scottish Canals’ financial
situations being especially critical. Although recognised in the Government’s Environmental Improvement Plan, IWA says waterways continue to deteriorate while government funding is decreasing. Continued on page 2

A POCKET of land beside the River Slea in Sleaford, Lincolnshire has been put on the market by the town’s civic trust for £12,500. The Cut is part of the original navigation system, with this small remaining stretch having been developed into a water garden in 1975. A slipway, mooring and lift bridge were installed by Lincolnshire Waterways Partnership acting with the Slea Navigation Trust which has been assured by the civic trust that all information regarding agreements will be passed on to any prospective purchaser.
DELAYS to the replacement of its boiler mean that historic steam narrowboat President has had to pull out of the Braunston Historic Boat Rally again this year. However the Friends of President report that they have been offered the use of Keith Ward’s steam tug Hasty for the weekend of June 24 and 25. The Friends plan to take the butty Kildare to Braunston, where the fore cabin will be painted. Hasty will then take President’s place towing Kildare. Steam enthusiast and music mogul Pete Waterman is due to open the event.
A MAJOR contributor during the Well Creek restoration in 1975, Ralph Woolner has died peacefully at his home in Outwell, Norfolk, aged 91 years. He was the last of the local contractors who generously contributed so much to the Well Creek/ Old Nene restoration as soon as heavy dredging machines were allowed to work on the project. Paying tribute, company secretary of the Well Creek Trust John Delaney stated that the contribution made by a few local contractors should never be underestimated.
