THE Canal & River Trust’s chief executive Richard Parry has given a stark warning about the potential future for the waterways due to funding concerns.

In a briefing to the waterways press, he said that the long-awaited financial statement, which is expected at Easter, will not include any provision for inflation. As a result the value of the grant, fixed at £52.6 million from 2021,

will be subject to a reduction of around 29% by 2027. Mr Parry said that even more worrying was the Government’s indication that the grant is likely to reduce after 2027, something that will only exacerbate the

already difficult situation. He highlighted the fact that demands on the trust have never been greater, with planned and emergency work continuing and increasing numbers using the waterways. Continued on page 2

IWA has joined a campaign led by the National Bargee Travellers Association to ensure boaters who live off-grid or without a home mooring are able to access the Government’s Energy Bill Support Scheme. It has worked with NBTA on a paper which was submitted to the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS). So far, the Government has offered a complicated way of applying for the energy grant with the expectation of being denied, which then allows people to apply for another grant. See story on page 70.

NATIONAL Lottery players are being invited to visit the renovated Victorian workshop at Diglis Lock Island and the new Diglis fish pass in Worcester from Tuesday, March 21 until Saturday, March 25.
