Guest speakers Paul Burrows and Jonathan Fen of the Middle Level Commissioners outlined the history of the commissioners and how they drain the land and move water out to the Great Ouse and eventually the Wash. The drainage system, first introduced by Dutch engineer Cornelius Vermuyden, is being reinforced and improved with the latest technology, such as the new St Germans pumping station near King’s Lynn.

Boat Safety Scheme THE Canal & River Trust, Environment Agency, Broads Authority and Association of Inland Navigation Authorities are announcing governance changes to the Boat Safety Scheme to become a not-for-profit company. It will take on the work of the existing scheme from April with income continuing to fund running costs and safety improvements. Customers won’t see any change to their BSS Certification or licence/registration processes; current certificates will remain valid until their renewal date.
