A PRESSURE group has called on the Government to give more cash to maintain the UK’s waterways – warning a lack of funds may force some rivers and canals to close. Fund Britain’s Waterways (FBW), which represents a wide range of river and canal businesses and users but not Canal & River Trust, a charity part-funded by the Government, has called on Labour to reverse what the
group says is underinvestment and urged it to stump up real funding to ensure infrastructure doesn’t fall into disrepair. SPECIAL celebrations will mark the 150th anniversary of the Anderton Boat Lift this year. The Canal & River Trust will be transporting visitors back in time to 1875 by hosting a spectacular Victorian Fair over the anniversary weekend of July 25-27 with boat trips and events throughout the rest of the summer season. The crystal prize celebrates the team with the most support hours and the canal trust’s members donated 10,124 hours through various activities. Chairman Howard Wilson praised the volunteers. Recent focus has been on the restored stretch near Lacock while major projects included completion of the waiting wall at Pewsham Locks and a new bridge.
